  1. Nyberg is back, good for him and he gets a game in Conference League (original appointment was in EL: Salzburg - Roma).

    1. But still a bit disappointing, that he doesn't get a EL KO match after 2 CL GS games.

  3. No French VAR for Turpin and Frappart this week and a new name (Wattelier) for Letexier. So there seems to be some problem.
I assumed, that Brisard would work as a referee himself this week, but apparently not the explanation for missing in Turpin's team.

  4. It seems as Rosetti has been very angry with all French VAR after Fiorentina - Braga, now we have Frappart with a Portuguese VAR and Millot AVAR. Nevertheless, Wattellier confirmed as VAR in another game, but he was never seen before in such context.
It looks like some games for committee are more important than others in the same competition, but this is only a speculation.
Agayev: let's remember he made CL debut so a KO game was expected, but surely he could have got by far more than this game in ECL. Also, Frappart's progress even after having attended WC seems to be the same.
Difficult to find the best game on paper in this set, but if you ask me which referee got the best appointment for his expectations, the answer in my opinion could be Obrenovic in Basel.
To follow, maybe a quite similar level, Jorgji in Florence

    1. Based on the teams, I would have said, that Nyberg, Obrenovic and Tohver have the best games.
And in general it's the bigger achievement for the referees without CL debut, i.e. Jorgji, Obrenovic and Tohver.

    2. Was it really necessary to punish Brisard for Millot's mistake? He seems (very) reliable to me. Is it true that he worked almost exclusivley with Turpin in European competition, but I don't remember any majour controversy with him involved.

  5. Not a really consistent foul selection by Nyberg so far. Whistling many small contacts on the one hand, allowing clear late tackles on the other hand. Talking and warning a lot, but he really has to work to gain acceptance tonight. Very calm and composed appearance though.

  6. HL of Glenn Nyberg in Lazio - AZ

I rarely praise referees to such an extent but, let me say, absolutely top class performance. Dutch teams are always very difficult to manage (rough way of playing, questioning almost every FK). The game could have easily exploded if not the brilliant management skills of the Swede. Even delaying the first YC as much as possible, he controlled everything by his presence, not ignoring / missing any hot moment. Full focus. While he looked very serious and professional throughout, he arouse respect by many talks and warnings. Natural authority. His English has to be very fluent. Looking at skills, he should be a top elite!

I see @Unknown disagrees with me but, hey, it's all about opinions :)

    1. I watched the game yesterday and I can only agree, especially in terms of self presentation he is absolutely excellent, by far better than Ekberg. Let's see how he will develop... but I think committee found a very good name.

Clearly suggested by Fourth Official (you can see the replay with his good view on the incident).

    1. This is why Makkelie has the cards together. Gives you time to discuss with your team

    2. Yes, or a wallet so you can pull that out in 50/50 situations. Orsato I have noticed does that.

  11. Highlights of Stéphanie Frappart's performance in KKS Lech Poznań (POL) - Djurgårdens IF (SWE):

    https://we.tl/t-OqPLqAzOKR

It was a very physical game what could've been expected from a Polish-Scandinavian duel. Frappart chose a very lenient line, not reacting adequately to several too-blatant-to-be-ignored challenges and delaying the restart by kicking the ball away after whistle. If not yellow cards, some strong public warnings were missed. DIF players were upset by the threshold she set for this game. And, what is even more important, you shouldn't be a sooo isolated figure on the field when adapting such a lenient line - connecting with players is very important in such cases and Frappart wasn't able to do that in this game.

  12. Highlights of Bartosz Frankowski's performance in RSC Anderlecht (BEL) - Villarreal CF (ESP):

    https://we.tl/t-GmEuT05OXE

Well, quite dirty game as well. Frankowski didn't have a clear line what irritated players throughout - some hard challenges let go, some soft defensive FKs awarded.

He started well with three public warnings. YC to 14VIL for well-detected SPA followed in 37'. One minute later, the same player committed another SPA offence and everyone expected Frankowski to issue a second YC but it didn't happen. It was the moment when he lost the plot a little bit. Another possible YC for SPA not given in 42', YC to coach AND for dissent in 44', two possible YCs for illegal use of arm and late challenge not given in 45+1'.

There were less such duels in the second half but the foul detection/selection was shaky. Another YC possible in 66' for reckless tackle, good management of time wasting in 69'/70' and acceptable no FK/PK in 73'.

Both assistants had important and correct offside (5', Boniek) and onside (28', Winkler) calls.
