  1. A name like Orsato's was expected in Munich, I think. Irrati 4O and not VAR?

  2. Interesting to see a Spanish VAR with Turpin, this can be related to Rosetti statements about GLT incident in Fiorentina - Braga, involving Millot. Nevertheless, another French VAR could have been appointed but maybe they will be busy elsewhere on Thursday.
Both today are expected appointment, Orsato with a big game and Turpin for a very open tie in London.

  4. Re the Dale Johnson PK tweet. Does that document from 2017 still hold any weight? This was from when the actual LOTG had nothing about VAR. Now it has an entire protocol section including what is a very clear statement on PK retakes.

"encroachment by an attacker or defender who becomes directly involved in play if the penalty kick rebounds from the goalpost, crossbar or goalkeeper"

    1. German head of referring Lutz Wagner confirmed today, that VAR may only initiate a retake, if the defender prevents the attacker from a shot on goal

So looks to me like it's still valid...

    2. This threshold makes sense as well, otherwise a lot of penalties would need a retake...

  5. To be honest this story that games start with delay due to late arrival of teams at stadium seems to be too frequent now. I don't remember this happening in past. Like Chelsea - Dortmund yesterday, now Tottenham - Milan.

    1. The two you have just mentioned are in London, so perhaps teams should travel there by the tube not bus.

  6. Orsatos confidence, body language and acceptance is something else...

  7. Orsato is in one of his good days. World class. I think this "more human - less robot" attitude, with hand gestures (classic Italian stereotype one might say :)) and emotions - body language in general - is what fans from TV prefer to see from a referee. Not extravagant like Lahoz but not stoned like Turpin. Orsato has the perfect mix.
I expect thhings to go smoothly also in the second half.

  8. Danilo on Orsato is "pure class"... Disgusting

    1. Yep, was really strange that Orsato didnt want to use his cards... That behaviour by Danilo clearly deserved a card!

  9. Orsato is horrible with is new style called "I am not gonna call a single foul".

How is it possible that he didnt call the foul on Verratti? And much bigger question, that how Irrati didnt call out Orsato to check that foul!? Well actually I know that Irrati save's Orsato's azz no matter what.... (Irrati also got this new style btw in Serie A)

    1. Not a foul, definitely not a clear and obvious error for VAR

    2. Not a foul??? :o
Wow, even Orsato called a foul for exactly the same "push+kick from behind" movement by Goretzka just a few minutes later in the middle... Believe me, I am absolutely not a PSG fan, but don"t tell me that it was no foul over Verratti before the first goal, please!

    4. He didn't whistle small fouls all game (e.g. also the situation in the penalty area with Choupo-Mouting in 50'), so why call it in this situation? This approach helped the game a lot and player accepted it as well. The only one who complained after Bayerns first goal was Veratti, because he knew he messed up...

  10. Not a lot od comments suggets that refs dud great job tonight.

Orsato did typical Orsato performanse tonight, it was much easier for him csuse of the result and Psg player were not being problematic, there was no Neymar and the game was lot easier to handle.

As for Turpin, all bookings and RC were correct, plenty cards for his match but all were correct and good performance from him.

I think we can mention only a few assistant referee able to make such a call in cooperation with referee, without needing VAR.
Here Orsato was asked about the possible header by attacker and then offside flag. Excellent teamwork, but this is a top level, mostly in such scenario an assistant referee doesn't raise the flag, waiting for VAR. I can remember such masterpieces only from Kuipers assistant referees...

    1. Why is this offside? He doesn't play the ball. He doesn't interfere with any of the opponents:
      - clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent - which player is impacted by his action? Goalkeeper surely not. Defenders surely not.
      - making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball - which player cannot play the ball because of his action? Goalkeeper surely not. Defenders surely not.
Do you really think the goal would not be scored if the attacker didn't make his action? For sure it would be a goal anyway.

    2. It 100% impacts the goalkeeper, you can even see him not making a decision to jump to the left until the ball is almost Ed passed Müller

    3. What part of a player stretching to reach a ball in the goal area doesn't impact the goalkeeper?

It would be a goal anyway is not what the law says, it meets that first criteria, correctly disallowed.

  12. The possible foul before 1-0, of course never VAR stuff, in case only Orsato should have whistled it, but it would have been very soft.

  14. A rare case in which Orsato didn't win. He had to book player following his behavior, but I think he didn't want to insist for some reasons, very strange.
