I think all the games from Group G are very hot due to political/geographical reasons. So, a very good appointment for Halil Umut Meler.
ReplyDeleteWe see the first very big name appointed in Montenegro - Serbia "derby", and this was a mandatory choice. Impossible to see a different referee, one could have maybe guessed either Vincic or Dias, both getting a game, but committee wanted a very safe referee.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the Slovenian and the Portuguese, given their assignments, are clearly still a step below the other Elite, less for the Slovenian who is very close, not the same for the Portuguese, who lost definitely some credits in recent times. Without Turpin's appointment I would still have said "no very big names", with the highest ranked Elite in Poland and Ireland. Nevertheless, let's wait for the last set, tomorrow, and we will have the full view.
The game in Montenegro was the only one so far treated differently from the others by committee.
Four referees for Monday, who worked in CL R16 after only two in total on the previous four days. But all their games are relatively big, so nothing too disappointing there.
ReplyDeleteGroup B
ReplyDeleteArtur Soares Dias gets the game between FRA and the only team in the group that can fight for the second place with NED and FRA. Morten Krogh gets the one-sided NEDGIB.
Group E
Slavko Vinčič assigned to the game between one of the two favourites (POL) against the only team that can fight for the second place (ALB). Daniel Schlager gets the MDACZE, his first game between senior national teams (not counting the LUXNIR friendly).
Group F
No big games this matchday in this interesting group with BEL, AUT and SWE all fighting for two spots. SWEAZE goes to Stéphanie Frappart (quite hot game given her last ultra-lenient outing in Lech - Djurgården) and AUTEST will be refereed by Enea Jorgji.
Group G
Good choices to appoint elite officials to this group involving Hungary and former Yugoslavia teams. Halil Umut Meler appointed to HUNBUL while Clément Turpin will face potentially explosive MNESRB.
So, Soares Dias and Vinčič with most important games while Turpin sent to Podgorica to handle potentially (very) problematic MNESRB. The rest are normal choices.
I know that most of you have been against Stéphanie Frappart lately so I think this game will be really good test to see where she is at the moment.
ReplyDeleteAgree even here with Euro Soccer that she was very bad in last Euro game Lech-Djurgarden, as he said very very lenient style with 4,5 missed mandatory yellow cards.
I watched this game and in studio was former Elite referee Jonas Eriksson(who also was a bit lenient) he was not happy at all with Stéphanie Frappart and siad it was very strange to see referee miss 3 mandatory yellow cards in row, all in first half. I don't know if some posted links but this fouls was really reckless.
Lately she seem to changed her style and try to be like Turpin and do not give any cards in first half but it does not suit her at all and she lose control and respect doing this. You can see in her last 7 games only 4 yellow cards in first half, around 0,5 card per game.
This game sound like easy one but Sweden lost fist game and took 4 yellow cards and Azerbaijan takes always a lot cards, yesterday against Austria they had 5 yellow cards.
Big test for Stéphanie Frappart

Will be interesting to see how Daniel Schlager handle his first game between senior national teams. Mostly because of scandal last few days when former referee Manuel Grafe gave open criticism to Lutz Michael Frohlich and "his" FIFA referees.
ReplyDeleteFrohlich have been very happy with progress of Osmers,Schlager and Stegemann with they new modern style where they control games very well with great body language and not being afraid of showing yellow cards.
But first game always tricky and we all know how problematic Moldova can be for referees with their reckless style . Easy to lose games like this if you are not focused enough and let them play their roughly tactic .
I think Schlager is really great so far and future Elite referee, both him and Osmers.
i saw an almost perfect display of modern refereeing in moldova tonight! isnt manuel grafe the "expert" who thought that danny makkelie was an international inexperienced referee? i count two world-cups, a euro-cup opening match and a europa league final into dannys pocket...i only count 9 national team matches and 6 champions league matches for grafe...and when i saw his last couple of years everybody could see why uefa ended this rather earlier than late...grafe was fifa referee until 2019...according to worldfootball he didnt get uefa/fifa matches after 2017...everybody who watched bundesliga and german refereeing knows why...
DeleteWhy ?
Deleteto schlager: excellent technical accuracy and great foul detection paired with a strong and clear body language but still a "human" approach to the players...big acceptance of the decisions and well communicated calls...so not a "robo-ref" who you cannot approach, but a great personality and leadership of the players together with reasonable calls that everybody understands...thats in my eyes, what football wants...and as scandinavian wrote, the moldovan team tries to interrupt often with little fouls...
Deleteto grafe: i guess he didnt get games because he didnt pass the fitness test...why else would uefa and fifa not appoint him to any more games in 3 years 2017-2019? from 2017 he only refereed friendly matches...if you watch his athetic performance in his last years i wonder wether he even passed any fitness test in germany...
I agree. Osmer, Schlager and Badstübner are possible future Elites in my opinion. Probably Stegemann as well.
ReplyDelete16': Clear tripping penalty for Austria - nearly no protests by Estonia
ReplyDeleteNot a convincing start from Turpin. Several fouls missed in first 20 minutes, one against GK in a very dangerous situation. Don't like hia approach at all.
ReplyDeleteSome minutes later, crystal clear yc given to Krstovic...
DeleteVery, very lenient Vinčič in POLALB...
ReplyDeleteIs anyone watching HUNBUL?
ReplyDeleteYes. Apart from leading the teams out Mr Meler has been barely noticeable. Both teams playing some nice football, without any silliness and as such Mr Meler has happily melted into the background. Has stepped in when really needed which has not been often. Played a couple of beautiful advantages for both teams.
DeleteStraight red card by Krogh for SFP. Very well done with a perfect positioning.
ReplyDeleteCorrect straight RC by Krogh
ReplyDeleteTwo possible fouls before Serbia goal, one by each side: at first against Montenegro and then against Serbia, when they gained possession of the ball. Very long analysis by VAR before confirming the goal, my feeling is that Turpin should have whistled something.
ReplyDeleteIt was reported that VAR was due to possible offside. And it was close. About possible foul, first Turpin didn't whistle foul for Serbia, then the same Serbian player was pulled from Montenegrin, half a second later Serbian pulled Montenegrin. Turpin decided not to whistle anything. As Serbian I am satisfied (even though Montenegrins are our brothers, same blood), but Turpin was during the whole game under his reputation in one very easy game, without tension.
DeleteAdmittedly i am biased because i am Montenegrin, but even if i watched a game between completely different teams, i would say that situation before Serbia goal is clear attacking foul. Pulling was obvious. Crucial mistake IMO, although understandable no VAR intervention
Delete"It was reported that VAR was due to possible offside. And it was close"
DeleteNo, it wasn't even close. In the moment of the pass, Mladenović is the only player whose position is important... i don't know why they even showed us offside line.
Does anybody have a clip of 18’ in NED-GIB? I think a possible penalty for the home team was missed by Krogh (and VAR?) after a tripping offence.
ReplyDeleteRewatched and though it was a very deliberate (and risky) action by defender, the (minimal) amount of contact justifies a play on I think.
Deletehttps://streamin.me/v/31d4c3e1
DeleteThere is absolutely no argument for play-on, imo. The attacker does nothing 'special' to win a penalty kick. He is simply carelessly tripped.
Penalty. But very very difficult to spot by anyone on the pitch.
Delete@Florian: assistent with clear and open view on the incident?!?!
Delete@grumpy-ref
DeleteWith all the respect but you are speaking nonsence.
Your comment clearly shows that you have never refereed top football as AR:
1) The assistant referee is at least 5 meters to the right of the spot of the foul and is focused on the offside line: he observes 4 defenders and 2 attackers. (Nederlands is attacking)
2) The place of the offense itself is a step inside the penalty area and it is the zone where the assistant referee CAN help the referee, it is impossible to say that he MUST help.
3) If you, as an assistant referee, look at the place where the foul happened, and you don't follow the offside line, you are in trouble my friend, because by the time you look back from the ball to the offside line, the attacker has already run away a few meters... And? what are you going to do then, make a decision by heart?
Here we are talking about matches where fast football is played, about national teams, this is not a Sunday league, so you can see almost everything on the field because everyone is slowed down.
And finally, if as an AR you manage to help the referee with a penalty in this situation, then it is difference between a good and a top assistant.
@DrMr, first of all i think we agree it is a clear foul (tripping) by the defender, right?
Delete1) i agree on the position of the assistant, however this is to me only a poor excuse. we are seeing here a 1-2-pass or give-and-go-pass and the assistant must have a look on the ball and the passing process too. the problem here is exactly what you describe: the assistant is too much focused on the offside line. no player is in dangerous offside position. the only relevant player to set into focus is the fouled one...and that he clearly missed.
2) agreed! this is a place on the field where an assistant CAN help. and where i think we can distinguish good from excellent assistants. however, i have a problem with the referee...he way to early makes his decision, waving away the protest before having the possibility to talk to his assistant? clear and strong body language of the refere make it very tough for the assitant to communicate his perception, if he even has one...
3) we are talking about fast football, but we are also talking about europes best refs ;-) that we must never forget. and i think this is an incident that could easily have been solved on the pitch. a clear tripping foul away from the ball with clear possible sight to the assistant. offside line is totaly uninteresting here as you must be able to anticipate the easy give-and-go pass here. also a wide ball there is nobody near offside...in my eyes, the assistant had wrong anticipation and lack of focus on the things in his vicinity...
and yes, here we agree: assistants who save the refs a...make the difference between good and top assistants...with var and saot the job profile of the assistant has changed dramatically, my friend...the "offside-assistants" will be gone hopefully...in the "fast-game" as you call it, it is the more necessary to be a "referee"-assistant and not only "offside-line"-assistant...to not disqualify yourself with your old-fashioned comments ;-) you dug your own grave with the nonse you wrote...
Mr Dias was excelent. He did a very good job much better than usualy.
ReplyDeleteReckless-SFP incident from POLALB
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/f67539e8
In my opinion, YC is a correct decision. Even though VAR would probably support both colors.
DeleteFrappart and her team did good job yesterday in Stockholm.
ReplyDeleteWas not that easy first half but she managed it very well.
Only big mistake was in minute 35 when she missed mandatory yellow card for reckless clear elbow in the face with high intensity from Swedish player number18 Gustafson on Azerbaijan player number 9 .
She was in good position just few meters from it and clear way but no card showed , we saw this season in Italy or Spain many red cards for same elbows . But all in all very good game.
Schlager had no problem yesterday in his debut, very friendly game so was not hard.
