  1. Interesting appointment for the Germany-Peru friendly:
Maria Caputi, Ciro Carbone, Alessandro Giallatini, Davide Massa - Paolo Mazzoleni, Luigi Nasca (all ITA)
So a female referee, who is only in UEFA's women first group, but going to the WC. Together with some male countrymen, who regularly work in CL.

GEO-MNG: Hovhannisyan, Ghazarayan, Sevgulayn (all ARM), Aptsiauri (GEO)

    1. Clearly they are accelerating her process to develop as she is only, at least on paper, a UEFA Category 1 official and she should officiate at WC. After a quick promotion and after having skipped the abolished Category 3, time is still short so here you have a big appointment in Men's friendly. Orsato's assistant referees are at moment the best in Italy, so you can easily understand the reason for this specific choice. I don't think this is a new start of a process involving some other women, but I think this is made on purpose for her.

  3. Disappointments (isn't that a great word for appointments below expectations...?) for Kruzliak and Kehlet, I think, while Simovic gets a rather good match for his category.
The rest appears more or less normal to me.

Very important and big ENGUKR goes to Serdar Gözübüyük. With ITA in this group, all games between these three teams are extremely important. It seems the Dutchman has become a trusted referee for UEFA whether one agrees or not. Not so big MLTITA has been assigned to Georgi Kabakov but with Milorad Mažić observing. Another big test for the Bulgarian but the committee rather didn't want to give him a bigger game.

    Group H
No really big games this matchday. Novak Simović got KAZDEN with Levan Paniashvili. The committee clearly see the Serb as promising referee. Let's remember that almost every game involving KAZ is challenging for the referee. NIRFIN, quite interesting game if NIR is going to show a good form, goes to Ivan Kružliak and Nathan Verboomen to handle the less significant SVNSMR.

    Group J
Besides POR, everything is open in this group with BIH, ISL, maybe also LUX and SVK fighting for the second place. Marco Di Bello with SVKBIH seems the most important this matchday but of course not soooo big on the paper. LUXPOR goes to Radu Petrescu (surely more interesting game than PORLIE given to Eskås in MD1), and LIEISL will be handled by Jakob Kehlet.

So, Gözübüyük with a big and important ENGUKR. Kabakov under special observation of Mažić in 'only' MLTITA though. Committee continue their focus on Simović. Kružliak, Di Bello and Petrescu with 'semi-important' duels. Verboomen and Kehlet with least significant games.

  5. Off Topic,
I would like to share my thoughts about next quarter final club matches. I guess that the appointments should be planned in the perspective of semifinals and final to avoid potential lack of candidates. For CL final match, I guess that nobody disagree that the real candidates are Makkelie, Marciniak and Taylor. I would rule out Marciniak just because he already got WC final and a CL match could freeze his motivations of the future as well because it could be a little respectless to the other to class. In Rosetti’s shoes I would wait for quarte final: If City and Chelsea will be out I would go straight to Taylor, otherwise I would go straight to Makkelie. Europe League final could also depend by teams: if Italian ones will be out, it could be a deserved good farewell match for Orsato, otherwise I would go straight to Marciniak, who only officiated super cup final so far (except WC of course).
It arises that CL semifinal could see:
City/BM – Chelsea/Real: Orsato (if Marciniak will official EL fial) and Turpin or Marciniak (if Orsato engaged in EL final) and Turpin
Milan/Naples – Inter/ Benfica: Taylor (if Makkelie engaged in CL final) and Mateu or Makkelie (if Taylor engaged in CL final) and Mateu
    Mateu and Turpin already booked
According to such toughts I would go:
    CITY-B.M.: VINCIC-MARCINIAK
    BENFICA-INTER: DEL CERRO GRANDE-OLIVER
    MILAN-NAPLES: TAYLOR-ZWAYER
    CHELSEA-REAL M.: JOVANOVIC-KOVACS

    FEYENORD-ROME: SHARER-GIL MANZANO
    JUVENTUS-SPORTING:GRINFEELD-KRUZLIAK
    M. UTD-SEVILLA: ORSATO-MAKKELIE
    LEVERKUSEN-UNION SG: MASSA-SOARES DIAS

Probably Conference league can follow a dedicated path
    GENT-WEST HAM: PINHEIRO-BASTIEN
    FIORENTINA-LECH: STAVREV(just for farewell match)-NYBERG
    ANDERLECHT-AZ:LETEXIER-EKBERG
    BASEL-NICE:SANCHEZ MARTINEZ-STIELER
As you see Guzubuyuk is out because to me is overrated but I see that uefa comettee trusts a lot on him, so probably he will not miss any match

Does it sound good for you such appointments ?

    1. I don't think, that referees will repeat teams from previous rounds, therefore I don't believe in your predictions for Vincic, Kovacs, Schärer, Gil Manzano, Massa, Soares Dias and Bastien.

  6. Strange penalty for Kazahstan, I didn't see any handball

    1. Me neither, my impression is that Wind cleared the ball with his shoulder. Is it possible that he touched it with the elbow first?

Looks like it was called after AR1 input, quite delayed.

    2. The penalty was called by assistant referee for sure, no chance to see for referee and I think VAR didn't intervene because no clear evidence that it wasn't arm.
This should be the moment of the handball:

    3. Still not convinced it was a handball and can't undestand how assistant ref could have seen it clearly

  7. Watched a couple of replays and still I am shocked, how is it possible to give such penalty with VAR???

    2. Thats bullsh*t, nothing to do with his nationality. Yesterday I commented about poor performance of Bastien

  8. 2nd YC for reckless elbow for KAZ17: https://streamin.me/v/61ea2121

Crazy & unexpected Kazakhstan comeback from 0-2 to 3-2, that controversial handball PK was for sure a turning point.

    1. Looking at the way of raising and showing both cards, including the body language, I must say he looks like a very famous referee from his country!

  9. Good first half by Gözübüyük. Could have given a penalty on Kane but probably would have been too soft, certainly not a mistake in my view

    1. Agreed, generally a decent performance, but IMO a missed yellow card in 21. after a reckless stamp on foot. I was bothered more though by the hesitant and not so convincing body language (reaching for the pocket twice, delaying a decision) in that situation. Apart from that not sure much to report.

    2. Best decision to play on because the contact was more than minimal and Kane tried to use it.
Missed YC in 21', very clear.
He should be less hesitating and more convinced in his decisions, better to have a decision sold with the best body language than appearing always afraid of making a mistake.

  10. Nathan Verboomen with a quiet match.
He gave 3 yellow cards in the match (all 3 to San Marino)
There were also 2 VAR checks in minutes 56 and 90 for a possible penalty, but the VAR (Lawrence Visser) did not intervene.

  11. Kružliak with a very lenient approach, could have been several yellow cards already with another referee.

  12. Minute 55 circa. Ronaldo with a shameful simulation and correctly given a yellow card. Then sarcastically gave thumbs up and applauded the referee after his expalnation. No card for that. Just wish he would get another one, especially since the decision was 100% correct.

    1. Video:
      https://streamff.co/v/WO3NmYSB6X
At first let me say excellent call by Petrescu, full simulation, last replay is clear. Then, coming into Cristiano Ronaldo's behavior after that, he was very clever in doing that gesture in a rather "friendly" (with referee) context, at first arguing with him and then having this reaction. If it had been an isolated act, and maybe from a certain distance, it would have looked different. I think that you can't talk about a very mandatory card in this case, but of course in case of second yellow nobody could have blamed referee. I just liked the fact that he was not influenced by the famous Portuguese star and he issued a YC for simulation with firmness, reaching already a level that is not common for other referees, even when they SAW WELL what has happened...

  13. Two very interesting situations from Liechtenstein - Iceland, referee Kehlet (DEN).

14' Offensive foul whistled with the worst timing
    https://streamff.co/v/MBBG0ymqiw
I stopped the video at the beginning of the whistle, it was exactly when ball was entering the net. Not clear which foul wanted to punish referee, UEFA site reports foul by nr. 11 ISL, the player scoring the goal. Phantom call by referee that in an important game would have "disallowed" VAR intervention...

40' Disallowed goal after OFR for a previous foul
    https://streamff.co/v/1m_XY_AwO2
I think that the Polish VAR assessed a step on foot. While the intensity seems very soft, one can agree with the call since the scoring player i took advantage on defender, scoring immediately after that, but if I look at this situation as standard one, I'm in doubt whether clear enough for an intervention or not. Nevertheless, we definitely saw less clear calls for alleged steps on foot, so I think it is OK.

    1. @14': I don't think, VAR would have intervened, if he could, because there is a small push in the back by the goalscorer.
But yes, he should have waited a bit longer.

  14. A penalty appeal from Malta - Italy, I think supportable to play on. Correct by VAR to stay silent, should have been whistled only by Kabakov.
