  1. Are referees who appear in the youth leagues more likely to be fast tracked?

    1. In this set of assignment, it is interesting to point out that Henrik Nalbandyan ARM has been appointed "only" for Youth League game, after a very long focus on him by committee this summer, with members observing him. He also attended Under 17 EURO, so a debut in Conference League group stage, the minimum was expected. I think he didn't convince otherwise he would have got a game. Armenia remains as federation without a referee in group stage so far, Rosetti has managed to give this honor to other associations, but still working for Armenia...

    1. It is interesting to see Manzano appointed in the CL after the Ukraine-Italy match. But we can expect such an appointment as the UEFA referee committee does not make appointments based on performance.

  3. Off-topic. I’ve once read a comment on this blog (I think by Mikael?) that the best and strongest referees can officiate a game without cards. Prime Cakir and Clattenburg are good examples of that, whereas I think that Kuipers and Brych were more dependent on cards and teamwork (and shouting :D).

Who do we think would fit in that category of the current generation?
In my opinion, Marciniak would be able to officiate EVERY game without cards, by just using his strong body language, personality and management skills. And he will probably never lose control or look extremely ‘bad’. It may not be everybody’s cup of tea (not mine as well), but he’s able to do it.

Orsato is a name that comes to mind, he is a big authority, but Orsato not using his cards can look a bit unnatural and can put him in survive modus (remember Real - City 2022?), lots of talking and slowing down the game. Therefore, Marciniak is better in this regard imo.

Turpin is a very lenient referee, just punishing ultra clear offenses. In football focused games, I think he can survive without cards by just using his personality and experience. If he’s ultra lenient in more heated games, it can boil over. But he is certainly the master of quiet refereeing :)

Kovacs is a good example of a referee dependent on cards. Tried to apply UEFA guidelines, but it doesn’t work for him. Lack of authority or experience?

On the other hand Makkelie, I think he could be more lenient with regard to his card management. Often I see him punishing quite “soft” offences, whereas he should trust more on his personality and experience. If he follows the ‘Turpin-line’, it will also help him to avoid controversial incidents (eg. a soft 2YC). Makkelie’s strongest quality is to keep the pace and flow in his games. Player’s don’t get the time to complain.

The English referees can likely survive in their domestic league without cards, however I’m not sure about games abroad.

The ‘modern’ Vinčić is also a very lenient referee, but honestly I don’t like modern Vinčić. In top games, he always seems in survive modus, to stay in the background at all costs. Looks toothless.

Nyberg, you already see that he has a lot authority and respect from the players on the pitch. Loads of potential! And that is probably why he is already more trusted in top games than eg. Peljto.

Feel free to agree or disagree. :)

    1. I agree with your analysis (I noticed Marciniak is very lenient after the WC final, exactly as he thought he can handle games using his management only) but, anyway, referee who deliberately chooses to not card players even when mandatory or beneficial for the game simply encourages players to behave in an unfair manner. And it often leads to intense but dirty games. Best referees should be able to assess when cautioning a player is mandatory/beneficial or when it's OK to let it go (for example a minor SPA in the first half of a fair game).

    2. Yes agree, I also prefer the approach you mentioned. Feeling the game and know when to step in. Although Marciniak is probably the only referee of this generation being able to referee without cards (without looking toothless) and that is what makes him the best atm

    3. True. The level of control in his games is from another world, indeed. It was the same in SVNKAZ where he allowed KAZ to play in a very physical play. I would've prefered cautions, at least for two reckless charging offences, but Marciniak decided to let it go, not even specially warning the offenders. Despite that, SVN players didn't have anything to say while with someone other in charge it would've been different I think. So, I don't like it but the level of control can't be questioned.

    4. Alberola Rojas is also one ref that comes to mind who prefers games with no cards.
      😀

There are some who are under the radar or should I say ,not enough quality.

Doveri is also one of them.

      Turpin and Watellier in France.

If we look outside Europe, you'll see refs like Claus,Daronco,Goncalves in Brasil.

They would rather let men be injured than show cards.😀

Speaking of that style,I dont like it.

I much prefer refs who are strict, who are keeping the game clean.

Of course, not every foul is a card, but some authority must be established as well as punishing players deservedly.

Makkelie's style when he is on top if his game is one of the best, the way he adapts to game is unique.
Kovacs is also the ref I like, the one you mentioned.

Also,I like what PL and England has done with their refs(not with VAR obviously).
But ,they are punishing clear fouls, timewasting and protests with YC's.

Some will say that it is strict, but we all know that some players you need to control with cards and that's why we're seeing record number of cards in England.

We saw same ref with 2 different styles-Sanchez Martinez and how well received was his style when he was strict.

After all, that is personal taste, but for me the ref who can adapt well to a game is the one who will have good performance.

  5. Hi! I am a new follower of this blog. I am a big sports fan and I love to read about officiating (also in Tennis and other sports). Since I am quite new to following football refereeing I'd be interested if there are any articles/analysis on the general topic of officiating. Not necessarily about the rules but I'd want to read stories about good/popular referees. Probably something like the "Man in the middle" documentary by the UEFA but as an article. Not sure if something like this even exists? Thanks!

    1. Turpin, Marciniak and Orsato are the easy names for the finals.

BIH-UKR and GRE-KAZ are not to be underestimated. I expect bigger names there.

    2. Personally, I would not appoint Marciniak for the final in Path B with the Ukraine as a possible team for geographical reasons.

      Delete
    3. It seems on paper difficulty scales are the contrary of the paths, we can see that path C involving 2 country known with full house stadium (GRE/GEO) combined with problematic teams like Kazakhstan as we can see them in Ljubljana with Marciniak so I don’t think we can expect Letexier even Zwayer in path C (I don’t think he’s fully trusted by the committee regardless of his appointment in Italy). I will swap Letexier and Zwayer with Jesus Gil and Kovacs from path A or Artur Dias that very experienced with manager style.

    4. It would be very interesting if Kazakhstan make surprise and on the final will meet Marciniak again as their referee

  7. Someone wrote that Galatasaray sent a letter to UEFA after the game against Bayern. Man United wasn’t happy with some referee decisions as well. For next week, a top referee expected in Galatasaray-Man United?

Something I considered with regard to GROUP F is, given the limited options, to swap the Week 2 appointments. In other words, Marciniak to PSG-Newcastle, Kovacs to Milan-BVB, as they would not repeat the same teams again.
Was Milan unhappy with Kovacs after the QF UCL last season? I don’t remember.

  8. I guess most of you already watched this famous situation from Turkish Women's Top Division Fenerbahçe - Besiktas, clearly irregular goal.
I wanted to ask some Turkish readers for knowing whether the referee was looking or not at the incident, and this is the only necessary thing to know. If she wasn't looking, as I can guess, still a very poor mistake, but you have clear explanation (in this case missed help by even both assistant referees and fourth official if present, I would say). But if she watched and assessed it as regular, well. Still, something that shouldn't happen, referee must always follow play very carefully and in case of missed incident, rely on team-members.

    1. If 4 referees all didn't see the incident, I have no words to say. That is a fundamental mistake. The referee should start from basics again.

    2. Much worse mistake if the referee saw it in my opinion, should never happen at this level and judging from the clip it looks like the referee is watching the incident and allowing the goal, very strange indeed.

    3. I used to post controversial positions in the Turkish league every week on this blog, but the positions were not "mistakes" but "intentions". That's why I don't share them anymore.

To summarize the situation in Turkey briefly: The president of the Football Federation (TFF) is a member of a terrorist organization (FETÖ). The president of Fenerbahçe is the biggest (Platinum) sponsor of this terrorist organization. In addition, the president of Fenerbahçe is one of the richest businessmen in Turkey and is the overt or covert sponsor of many clubs (including Beşiktaş). This financial situation and their organizational ties with the TFF make Fenerbahçe very powerful. So much so that even if a refereeing error is made against them in a Fenerbahçe match, most clubs cannot even make a statement out of fear. The president of Fenerbahçe has even had many media members fired from TV and newspapers for criticizing him. In a recent statement he named some referees and some TFF officials and asked fans to harass these people wherever they see them.

In Turkey, the referee committee (MHK) is directly appointed by the TFF. Therefore, the MHK is at the command of the TFF. Last month, the dirty dealings of the former president of MHK (Lale Orta) came to light. According to this, the president of MHK was taking the videos from the VAR room on her cell phone and sending them to the president of Fenerbahçe. She was also helping some referees to get "fake" medical reports from the past to make them FIFA referees.

There are dozens of other bad issues that I have not written here. In short, as a football fan, I no longer follow the Turkish league and I canceled my subscription to the broadcaster. When we look at all these things, it is very normal for such mistakes to happen in the Women's League. Because the referee lists are not created by the "independent" MHK but by clubs, sponsors and some criminals. We should not forget that many of the referees in the lower leagues run betting shops.

What I have been trying to explain so far can be easily understood from the following position in tonight's Fenerbahçe - Karagümrük match.

      Ref: Arda KARDEŞLER (FIFA Ref)
VAR: Hüseyin GÖÇEK (Ex FIFA Ref)

    4. For years there have been strict age limits in many countries, in modern refereeing everything seems to have changed, and I find this new era based on the right of the people who work as referees, while before, also because football was more "pure football" and there wasn't this particular attention to career's laws, this was not so much discussed, and all regulations were quite accepted. In Italy we have had incredible situations in this regard, with appeals after appeals in recent years.
