  1. Interesting appointment for Dario Bel in (freezing cold) Norway. Also one interesting fact: on thursday 11 Croatian referees will be appointed, that might be an absolute record. Other than Bel and his team and VAR (6), Croatian VAR works with Bosnian teams (3) and a team from MNE (2)

    1. Very busy week for polish referees too
CL: Frankowski - Boniek, Winkler - Gryckiewicz and Marciniak - Listkiewicz, Kupsik - Raczkowski (Kwiatkowski)
UEL: Stefański - Golis, Obukowicz - Myć (Lasyk/Pskit)
ECEL: Sylwestrzak - Heinig, Karasewicz - Malec (Frankowski (!!) - Jakubik)

  2. Most important / significant games:

    Klaksvík - Slovan (Tohver)
    Astana - Dinamo Zagreb (Beaton)
    Bodø/Glimt - Lugano (Bel)
    Beşiktaş - Club Brugge (Šmajc)
Aston Villa - Legia (Di Bello)
    Alkmaar - Zrinjski (Derevinsʹkyy)
    Fiorentina - Genk (Kooij)
Eintracht - PAOK (Sylwestrzak with Dallas; big teams but both qualified already)
    Nordsjælland - Fenerbahçe (Pignard)

    1. Eintracht - PAOK its very important game - first team in the table doesn't have to play in the playoffs. A very important match for Sylwestrzak, watched by Dallas. Maybe polish referee will be promoted to category 1 in December?

  3. It is a debut for Dario Bel, Luka Bilbija and Jérémie Pignard at group stage. It is acceptable for Bosnian as group is decided, however Lugano's last chance for qualification in the group, this might be challenging for the Croatian. For Pignard, it is a tough match, which will effect the qualification, leading team of the group etc... We all know he wouldn't be appointed if he was not French. To be honest, I would prefer a first group ref or a promotion candidate second group ref for this match. Good luck to all referees having matches this week.

  6. Two incidents in the last minutes of Breiðablik - Maccabi Tel Aviv, Bosnian referee at his UECL debut:
    https://streamff.co/v/BErJViXGbq
I think the first one is a disallowed goal for a previous foul, after having allowed play to continue for VAR purposes, then a few later second YC.

    1. IMO the first one is offside for interfering with the opponent and if onside than no foul by the attacker.
Second one straight RC for violent conduct.
What was decision in the first one, any VAR intervention?

      Delete
    2. No VAR intervention in the first incident, UEFA reports that referee whistled a foul in favor of defender, no offside:
      90' + 3
Turgeman (Maccabi Tel Aviv) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Muminović (Breidablik).
Then for the other incident, it is reported as second YC.

  14. Very bad intervention from Pairetto to call a penalty for handball in AZ-Zrinjski. The young Ukrainian referee correctly and bravely did not change his decision.

  15. Good performance by Bel in a great game in Norway. Correct YC and good positioning in an extremely fast game through 95 minutes. Also a very clear body language.

There were 2 penalty appeals rejected in the 2nd half. First imo supportable, and 3 seconds after the 2nd situation the attacking home team scored so noone will talk about it.

  16. At moment I really don't understand how VAR can work in Helsinki without knowing where penalty areas are...

  17. Here the OFR rejected by referee in Alkmaar:
    https://streamff.co/v/-4ptfJrgjB
Still the old story about arm used as support and nobody agrees. Here you have also a previous touch, deflection... to be honest impossible to consider this as clear and obvious mistake.
I simply think that Pairetto was afraid to make a mistake and he invited referee to rewatch to be more relaxed about the incident.. can't find other explanations, of course the fact that in Italy handballs are strongly highlighted was noticeable once again. But definitely, committee should do something because this is very embarrassing, you can be sure that among all referees there are many and many different views about a incident, that's not acceptable if you ask me.

  19. Mohammed Al-Emara what a disaster performance! Added time was 7 minute, absolutely clear foul for Cukaricki didn't whistle and from that action almost in 99' Cukaricki received a goal. Enormous protests, fairly deserved and he defended himself by the cards. I believe he already finished his European career. Very weak ref.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's not really the full picture, he had a pretty good game and in the last minutes he lost a bit the control, but the home team's behaviour was just a disgrace. Honestly the only thing I didn't like that he didn't give straight RC to the coach and the home player after full time whistle, only 2 YC and then RC.
The goal was in 98th minute after 7 mins of extra time and there were stoppages during extra time, so it was sensible to let the game go a bit longer.
I think he can have a great potential, even though lots of room for improvement and I am sure he will receive further appointment in the upcoming years.

  20. Fiorentina - Genk
Interesting OFR incident in additional time of second half: Kooij was invited to the screen for a potential red card (elbow on face). After review he decided to show a yellow card assessing it as reckless. In the following minutes of the game (+10) he nearly lost it.
If you ask me I agree with VAR call: at least SFP, if not even VC.

    3. Well, from a management/control perspective, a straight RC to the Belgian team would add even more fuel to the fire. Embarrassing behaviour by players of both teams.

To add some context, Fiorentina scored a late 2-1 penalty goal (do you have a clip Chefren?). I appreciate Kooij’s calm and mature attitude here.

    4. https://streamff.co/v/STc9CPVCAv
This was definitely the best moment of his game indeed, very good with the crucial decision for the outcome, but the control and disciplinary management were a real problem. Yes, the players acted in a very embarrassing manner as you wrote, but the game appeared to be too big for him. Good to make experience, but last minutes, you can see how many cards, were definitely out of control. Fo me definitely not enough only yellow card after OFR. Still, I think, I look at the referee and his experience and I say that I can't be more harsh than that. He was extremely and did what he could.

      Delete
    5. "Too big for him..." Hmm. The difficulty will depend on the scoreline. If La Viola score 2-0 within the first 15 min, a game will be much easier. The Refcom can't know that. Conference League games are great to develop Category 2 referees imo.

I see a lot of potential in Kooij (more than Lindhout tbh) and it is a good signal that he's already appointed to Italian teams. Not tricked by the threater, he looks calm, confident and very mature for a 32 y.o. referee. Just compare his appearance with (to give a random example) Sylwestrzak; I watched him yesterday. He is young and also looks very young. But yes, Kooij definitely has to gain more experience. More opportunities will follow.

      Delete
    6. Did not watch the game so cannot comment on game management, but a very clear RC for me and surprised he didn’t issue it after OFR. On another note, great PK decision to close the game out, expected and correct decision for me.

    1. Excellent AR1 in first half.
In 88', I tried to understand whether referee followed the ball or he had a certain view on the tackle as well, I think he just followed the ball, he moved the head quite early after the pass, so I think he didn't perceive the late reckless action. Clearly more unnoticed on the field because goal scored, but it is indeed reckless and it would have been fantastic to see YC given after the goal scored. Nevertheless, not a very significant mistake, if you ask me, maybe not even observer and committee care about that when the focus is about a goal scored. Different in case of end of action without target.

About the management of dissenting, in 57' maybe a better reaction by referee was possible, but still excessive actions by the players involved. Despite of the frustration fouls, it seems to me that player from both teams didn't act very badly, so still a regular performance by Swiss referee for what I can see.

    1. Terrible pitch conditions!
55' A big surprise when VAR assessment of the offside was shown, I must admit, I had missed this one as well, and I thought, like broadcaster, it was for the late pass. Nevertheless, I think there could be that second offside as well, but the left leg of defender can keep the ONSIDE (camera is not exactly in line). Very well by German VAR, but of course they are expert about that, to analyze every single moment.

90'4 I needed more replays to see this step on foot, absolutely unlucky action by player without any intention, but stil...! Totally different from the classic step on foot we know, I think that punishing this one by YC would have been harsh, but correct. Even very difficult to spot, but since referee whistled foul, you can expect that. I wouldn't blame too much German referee, to be honest.

64', always unclear situations when there is a back pass by defender, my question is always the same and I didn't find an answer so far: is it enough to see a player deliberately kicking ball backwards, but without thinking to keeper (because very far from the position or not expected)? or, easier, assessing that a ball is back passed without any other argument, is enough for saying that it must be punished? Here you can hear the reaction by fans, and this could be sufficient to think for most people it was punishable, but still we don't have guidelines / clear instructions about that. For me this is not a deliberate backpass TO KEEPER, so he is allowed to use hands.
About the frustration fouls in a row by home players, I think that the game never went out of control, so this management by referee seems sufficient, but looking just at the fouls without further elements, more severe punishments could have followed.. especially when dangerous challenges.
60' is indeed excellent teamwork, very good by AR2.

45+1' - PAI handball; hand stuck to the body

    84' - YC 4KLA for SPA tackle; possible 2YC 33SLB for simulation?

    86' - Possible YC 20SLB for off-the-ball holding
90+4' - YC 88SLB for DtR by kicking the ball away

    1. 27' YC is accepted in modern football (mostly due to intensity), but in reality it can (must?) be assessed as violent conduct because only intention of player is to stop opponent, ball away. Nevertheless, we saw even worse incidents than this one.

45'+1 Not a penalty, not punishable position for both arms.

77' All correct decisions, both penalty if no offside and then the offside by AR2. But more cooperation is needed, I think referee to be more responsible in this case, because, even without considering offside argument, he whistled penalty when attack was still in penalty area and something like a goal could have happened. Too hurry from Tohver, maybe he didn't even give time to AR2 to react.

84' This is a very interesting incident, I think that live it is impossible for referee to go for simulation, all you can expect is foul and YC for SPA, but watching in detail you see that Slovakian player used the tackle to fall. Still, not VAR stuff because red card not possible, but if penalty area incident, one could have maybe expected an intervention. Wouldn't blame too much referee, but what I dislike is the behavior by the player who could have continued his action instead of doing that.

90'4 Impossible to say, but without further elements, I think we don't have reasons to say that it was evident red card, so let's agree with VAR.

About the other incidents, 67' and 68' are evident cards, not given because missed fouls (indeed play on by referee, wrong decision); 67' is a step on foot, 68' is indeed another quite clear missed YC. Evident reckless action, not deliberate but the elbow with that movement caused a quite relevant hit on opponent's face. What we can add is that very often such challenges are hard to understand whether only careless or reckless, this one is definitely reckless.
