  4. Higler being (A)VAR this week in three different matches.

Tuesday: VAR at Atletico - Celtic. Strange appointment with a dutch club in the same group. Could've been avoided by uefa.

Wednesday: VAR at RB Salzburg - Internazionale

Thursday: AVAR at Sporting Portugal - Raków Częstochowa.

Is this something you want as UEFA? Looks to me as a not planned set of appointments. I trust Higler in this, but pressure on him could be massive in the matches on the other day's if and when he is involved in a crucial situation.

  7. Seems like Ekberg has completely fallen out in the Com preferences. He is on 0 so far. The only European game this season was in 3rd Qualifying Round in UCL, a NK Olimpija - Galatasaray on 8 Aug. No more after that. No games in the group stage, no Euro Qualifiers, no nothing.

Obviously Nyberg has great prospects and deserve to be the favourite. He delivered good performances. Al-Hakim also with a decent start, two fairly good UEL games. While Ekberg in on 0. Remember he was chosed for Euro 2020 and had a game in MD1 and not a dead rubber.

    2. Thanks, I remember reading the article at that time but I forgot about it in the meantime. Seeing now Nyberg and Al-Hakim appointed made me think about the refereeing situation in Sweden. I hope Ekberg will come back sometime in future. Thanks for the reminder.

    3. A pity. Most likely he felt hard done by the committee and I could agree. In my opinion, he deserved a promotion together with Nyberg at the last recategorization.

  12. Given the current guidelines it’s remarkable the amount of dissent Dabanovic allows by the Amsterdam side. Already three IMHO ultraclear examples of strong dissent went unpunished…

  13. Kabakov very lenient in France. He has missed at least 2 clear yellow cards

    2. For me 100% foul and good whistle delay, pushing in the back with intention, how you could accept such offence!

OK penalty, according to commentator he waited a moment before whistling.

    2. For me this is Simulation.... The leg of the defender is fully on the ground and then comes the Theater....

      Delete
    3. I also think this is a wrong penalty kick decision and I would expect an intervention to be honest. It’s only the attacker organizing his own fall.

    5. I always try to understand different views and of course I do accept the opinion of those who see this as a penalty but to give a penalty for this is so sad for me. There is no or only very minimal contact which at this low speed never ever causes the attacker to fall. We should not reward such (to me obvious) cheating with a penalty.

      Delete
    6. I agree with previous statements that this is not only a soft penalty, but also a wrong penalty that could have been given as a simulation. The foot of the defender will never affect the attacker in such a way.

  18. Like in Bayern yesterday, in Toulouse today, point for a goal after VAR, then decide to go back and look with an OFR. Really, really bad procedure that you would not expect from Uefa officials. When it comes to the handball, I think it's one of them given in Uefa, not in England, but who knows anymore (deflection from body, but arm slightly away from body, possibly instead the delibrate criteria)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think this is not a problem of Referees, but some issues with technologies, probably VAR was in Nyon

      Delete
    2. Deflection from the body isn't a criteria and not in the laws of the game anymore either. If it's unnatural it's always handball.

      Delete
    3. If any referee thinks that was a deliberate handball, then they simply shouldn't be anywhere near domestic top flight football let alone European football

      Delete
    4. In yesterday's match (Bayern - Galatasaray), VAR changed the referee's decision but did not provide any evidence. It was really weird.

    2. But still good intervention and decision by Kabakov, for everybody this is handball offence, just a question about to take a decision by himself , will be better

      Delete
    3. I think UEFA will view it as a correct handball, but what do you think about the time from when it happened to when the ball ended up in the back of the net? Toulouse's defenders even headed away the ball twice during this time, which should make it a different phase. At least that's my opinion

      Delete
    4. No controlled possession by the defense. Very clearly still the same APP in my opinion.

      Delete
    5. Well it still shouldn't come back, would you go back for a foul there, no. Its accidental and is 30 seconds before a goal, absolutely ludicrous to disallow that

      Delete
    6. 6:43 to 6:56 is 13 seconds, not 30...

      Delete
  20. I think that Kabakov in this case just wanted to invite players to be ready for the kick off and the gesture of pointing to the midfield was made for stopping the protests, still waiting for VAR. Can be a different situation that the poor management yesterday in Bayern - Galatasaray, because in that case there was already the evidence of a changed decision, while today it wasn't the same in Toulouse.
Still, a gesture that should be avoided indeed, referees should try to keep players calm in other ways.
About handballs, we can easily draw conclusion that UEFA VARs are instructed (if instructed!) to call everything, as already observered yesterday in Champions League.
This one can be indeed debatable in the international scene, but of course clear decision in Italy, as you can easily guess :)
Last but not least, I would dare to say committee didn't think about a so challenging one in Toulouse. Particular choice with the domestic VARs for Kabakov. I say that because very often with such referes, you know, we see VAR from other countries. But the decision about handball, especially if Italian VARs, would have been the same.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Isn't it completely ludicrous that the outcome you get depends on where your referee is from. If they are Italian chop your arms off, if they are English feel free to kick them and forearm smash them in the head.

  22. Very controversial (imo, wrong) OFR in Sporting CP vs Raków Częstochowa. After initial play-on call, Jorgji took the advice of Martínez Munuera, awarded a penalty against Raków and issued a RC for DOGSO/no-attempt (clear DOGSO in case of foul).

    1. Wrong call by Spanish VAR.. here you can even say play on is OK without whistling foul! In addition, you have referee making assessment. So where is the clear and obvious mistake?
Motivations: attacker puts hands on opponent as well, OK maybe not mutual foul but... the alleged holding by defender was not so evident in terms of effects.
Martinez Munuera again with debatable decisions after Greece - Netherlands! Luckily nothing happened in Milan - PSG, but definitely not convinced by him!

    2. I think that's the third wrong intervention from Martinez Munuera only since the summer in an international competition...

    3. Don't forget Panama-Jamaica in the WWC, wrong intervention to overturn a penalty for handball for Jamaica in the last minutes of the game. Unfortunately it was followed by Monzul, but fortunately Jamaica won the game anyway

      Delete
    4. Such intervention bad luck for referee, such VAR enemy of referee.

    5. The Albanian referee had already refused an OFR during his Champions League debut. Doing that again today maybe would have been "too much" under the eyes of committee, regarding the use of VAR, but he was fully entitled today to make such a choice! Don't know whether he didn't want to do that again exactly for the reason I mentioned, would be understandable in case. Sometimes VAR with wrong calls can indeed put a referee in trouble.

      Delete
    6. We could imagine what was today in the head of referee from Albania after UCL OFR refused and REFCOM were very dissapointed of this and now again OFR, as I said sometimes VAR enemy of referees.

  27. I thinks this was the end of Kabakov. Extremey poor again. Very doubtful desicion to disallow the 2nd goal for Toulouse for a slight touch. What about the last minute desicion? Disaster. Never VAR intervanton for this. And again panic desicion from Kabakov to accept VAR intervantion. Never a handball. I can not believe really that Kabakov is still 1st category referee. Such a shame for UEFA referee committee.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rubbish from minute one to 100 from Kabakov, looked like he hadn't refereed a game before. The VAR intervention is up there with the worst I have seen. 1. Doesn't hit his hand 2. It isn't deliberate 3. Its so far before the goal and clearly a different phase 4. UEFA has serious issues with differences in interpretations between different VAR's and different countries. It needs sorting asap, because its creating an unfair playing field

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1) It hits his hand.

      2) The ball is fully expected, he tries to control it with his body but the ball deflects and the arm is there to help. I believe it's handball everywhere nowadays.

      3) That it's far from goal doesn't matter. And it surely is not a different APP. You need to have a controlled deliberate play (pass, running with the ball, etc.) by defending team to assess it a different APP. There were two plays by defenders but neither of them could be assessed as initiating another APP. The referees were told about it at the very beginning of VAR implementation. Also, when you watch it, do you have the impression of the footage being two attacks instead of one? ;)

      4) Yes, because it's almost impossible to have all referees with same interpretation of often difficult incidents. However, in this case, I think it would have been the same outcome everywhere, also in the Premier League (however, I'm not 100% sure as it seems British officials live in a different world ;))

    2. I agree with Euro Soccer Ref here

  29. Two debated incidents from Häcken-Molde yesterday (unfortunately I don't know where to find good videos)

24' - Possible handball in APP (no VAR intervention) - The classical where VARs from different nationalities will view it differently. Some will view it as just a natural position while others will see at as a big advantage for the attacker and therefore intervene. Not surprising to not see an intervention here with Scottish VAR. No handball and no intervention is my personal preference, but with UEFA you never know. :)

52' - Possible RC for SFP (OFR recommended, rejected by referee) - Wrong intervention in my opinion, correct by the referee to stick with his decision. Amane Romeo (the Häcken player) comes in with his studs showing, yes, but the knee isn't streched and I also don't see a large amount of force here. RC should be supported in case given by referee but never VAR stuff.

      https://streamff.co/v/d8Ppb02ygj
And we have definitely a problem, UEFA... the position of the arm is absolutely natural for the movement he made, I fully agree, but then why most of VAR call this while others don't? I think that something must change soon in this regard, we can't have different VAR and different outcome of crucial situations, then in national leagues all can do as they want because there aren't conflicts, but in international stage big chaos. Of course Scottish VARs with very different idea than Italian, Spanish and so on. The reason for disallowing such goal is the one you mentioned, the player gains ad advantage by controlling ball, and the natural position is not "enough" to say that foul shouldn't be whistled. Different in the midfield without any potential promising attack in course, such situation is not foul.

      52'
Unluckily no replay, only live scene
      https://streamff.co/v/xhIMEW8IbN
What I can say is that the tackle looked to be always to ground, then there is a movement of opponent's leg that can cause a higher point of contact, but without the detail difficult to assess. Overall, the perception of excessive force in the live sequence is not at its full..

He will get some more matches maybe even in the knock-out phase IMO

  31. About the next appointment, if we want to give credit to committee, we should watch carefully the assignments of both Jesús Gil Manzano and Slavko Vinčić, among others. I mentioned them because top referees, they didn't carry out the guidelines by committee about dissent, in a quite blatant way. So now simply said if they get again CL, even if "minor game", we could say that all the care by committee about this new era can be considered again over and nobody is interested, because in some cases there are big interests by clubs. One must report the reality as it is. Despite of the rest of their performances, it is clear such incidents shouldn't be tolerated. So we will see again how this story will end, to clarify, nothing against the involved referees, could have been different names, but the discussion must be about the principle and how much committee wants to respect it...

Thanks God we have Australian example to follow, without lobbies and connections in the congederation, with so many world known and respected referees like...

    3. I doubt it will have any consequences for multiple reasons:
-They both have a compatriot in the Refcom
-UEFA needs all top refs for decisive games in week 5-6

More and more we see referees that are torn between i) applying the guidelines and LOTG correctly; and ii) at the same time keep the big club happy, cause it can hurt their career…

      Delete
    4. I agree that both will get Champions League, so better to stay silent by committee if then it is not possible to apply sono guidelines. We saw something at the beginning of group stage, then everything returned as it was. This is a classic path in the years when potential important changes are introduced.
Nevertheless, I must agree when you say that it is a very difficult condition for a referee, not only because there is the danger he can't meet again certain teams, but he himself can feel to be too different from the others, if nobody takes action.
For a radical change, there should be only a revolution in refereeing, I think that nowadays it is impossible.

      Delete
    5. I still don't understand why Antonio Nobre was assigned to such an important match. Nobre is one of the poor referees of his country. Therefore, he has not officiated any big matches or derbies in his country so far. Nobre became a FIFA referee in 2019. During his entire career (4 years), he has a total of 2 Conference League matches and 1 UEFA Europa League match. It is NOT NORMAL for him to be assigned to such an important match in the Champions League by officiating a total of 3 matches.
