2022 FIFA World Cup - Referee predictions - Round of 16 (II)

Send us your predictions for the "second half" of Round of 16 Games!

You have to guess the exact referee for each game by filling in a form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname (it must be always the same for all your future predictions) and then for each game just select the referee

Send your predictions here:

In order to give you more time to send predictions, we have decided to split some KO stage rounds, this is the second part of Round of 16, with games to be played on 5 and 6 December.
Appointments are expected on 3 December, or later. When published, the predictions will be officially closed. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted.

Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:

10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
5 points if a guessed referee for a game will be appointed as fourth official
3 points if the appointed referee is from the same confederation as the guessed referee
2 points if the guessed referee is in charge of the paired match for the next round*
1 point if a referee is appointed for the same stage

* =
R16: Al Bayt (4th Dec) paired with Al Thumama (4th Dec) -> Winners facing each other in QF
R16: Khalifa International (3rd Dec) paired with Ahmed Bin Ali (3rd Dec) -> Winners facing each other in QF
R16: Lusail (6th Dec) paired with Education City (6th Dec) -> Winners facing each other in QF

    1. My predictions:

      JPN-CRO: Ghorbal
      BRA-KOR: Oliver
      POR-SUI: Vincic/Turpin (I'm not sure)
      MAR-ENG: Hassan

I leave Lahoz, Ramos and Orsato straight to the quarterfinals

  2. And If we will analyzes bracket, SF should be: Argentina, Brasil and two Europeans teams, so probably we will have final CONMEBOL-UEFA.

    1. If Collina has the courage to leave Faghani out for his POR-URU match, Ramos jumps to his favorite depending on his performance.
And if not, he will have to break the rule with Orsato / Mateu

    2. If not Faghani, I don't see another option than Orsato. Two very good performances, but I don't know that his nationality is his advantage or not...

Ramos seems to be a option, but imo not a final material, but he should be saved for QF.

Marciniak with smaller games than expected, so we can think that he will be a referee in big QF or directly for SF.

Turpin and Englishmans depends from score FRA-ENG..

I don't see any options (Orsato, Ramos are candidate for final and now directly for QFs, Marciniak for SFs), what about CONMEBOL?

WC final referees XXI : ITA, ARG, ENG, ITA, ARG, and now ITA or ENG again? xd

    3. Wow,5 WC's Finals CONMEBOL or UEFA refs are handling it.

And no one has come close to them, maybe Faghani this year but we will see what happens after his Uruguay incident.

  3. I'm struggling here because:
I think Ramos & Claus will go directly to QF
I'm sure Orsato will go directly to SF
The issue for me is UEFA refs - For me Oliver, Lahoz & Turpin could be appointed - arguably Oliver perhaps performing better than the Spaniard and Frenchman - difficult one, so maybe a QF for Oliver.
I think Mohammed & Ghorbal should get a R16 - probably no further.
Really tough choices here so I go for:
    JAP - CRO: Ghorbal
    BRA - S KOR: Lahoz
    MOR - SPA: Mohammed
    POR - SWI: Turpin

  4. I have gone for:
    JPN - CRO Ramos (MEX)
    BRA - KOR Makkelie (NED)
    MAR - ESP Faghani (IRN)
    POR - SUI Oliver (ENG)

  5. Tbh Elfath would be an excellent choice for MARESP if he wasn't actually Moroccan.

  6. I went for:

    JPN-CRO: Ramos
    BRA-KOR: Mateu Lahoz
    MAR-ESP: Faghani
    POR-SUI: Turpin

  7. Marroco Spain will also be challenging match imo.

Neighbours, for sure they have their own past and both very passionate teams.

We all saw what happened 2018 and the chaos that Irmatov and his crew created so I expect to see top referee.

Don't gete wrong, all refs on this WC are top but some are just better.

Maybe there we will see Faghani who would be ideal also or maybe even southamerican cause this match needs ref who is at top of his game.

  8. Would you keep Al-Marri as Faghani's VAR?

  9. My Predictions:

    JPNCRO: Ramos
    BRAKOR: Mateu Lahoz
    MARESP: Faghani
    PORSUI: Orsato

    ReplyDelete
  10. JPNCRO: Surely Africa gets 1 referee this round on politics?
    BRAKOR: Turpin
MARESP: Argentina (the committee and maybe last chance for them)
    PORSUI: Oliver

I think Turpin gets 1 more but is below other quarterfinal options (Lahoz, Makkelie). Portugal-Switzerland could easily have enough issues to eliminate that referee so I don't think they'd risk Orsato.

Orsato seems like a less risky QF then the final. South America had the last and none of their referees have stood out this year. If something happens to Orsato, the strongest European in the knockouts who isn't conflicted.

Outside final chances if neutrality is needed: Maybe they like Faghani enough to overlook things or a race in CONCACAF. Barton is on a hot streak that could solidify with a strong R16 and QF but maybe is from too small of a country. Elfath seems to have a guardian angel. And it seems strange to not be giving Mexico a return chance even if Ramos was underwhelming (but also not attention grabbing).

  11. Faghani or orsato for the final

  13. Interesting that FIFA considered important to explain the procedure of allowing Japan goal, at moment this stays as the only official explanation during the tournament. I remember some posts written on past days by Arbiter in which he was highlighting the lack of transparency about VAR decisions at this tournament. Very likely in this case FIFA intervened because for most of people ball was out and they couldn't understand, a more evident situations for those who are not refereeing's experts. Then about the rest I just think Collina and FIFA consider that people don't have the needed knowledge to read explanations about more particular cases and if they start with an explanation, they should give also many others. In some cases, it is impossible. But surely for refereeing experts there were many unconvincing scenes at this WC.

  14. Chefren in your opinion who will referee the final or candidates?

    1. @Jonas, Elfath from the worst performance in the group stage and surely going home to final candidate ... all in a few days.

    2. It is difficult to answer because many things have still to happen. I start with a personal feeling I experienced, exactly after the final whistle of Portugal - Uruguay I was sure that WC for Faghani was over, now for me it's not the same, something like a feeling that he will get at least another game and then in case of good performance he could be confirmed as candidate for the final. The same should be said for other names, regarding UEFA we have the well-known pool of Makkelie, Turpin, Orsato and Taylor. At moment the UEFA referees that can look out for various reasons are Marciniak (planned for something big in KO stage but maybe not the final), Siebert (clear reasons) and Vincic (I think his WC can be considered rather ended and he can be satisfied). For sure what I can say is that apart from UEFA referees and Faghani (still) there shouldn't be other options. Maybe, but extremely difficult, Ramos, but he should make something like a miracle. I don't consider at all Elfath, first game was simply too poor to allow him to dream about the final, but for the exact reason of watching him appointed again after that, I think the contention is still open to all names I mentioned.

    3. Why wouldn't Lahoz have a good chance? I think he is rather convincing until now. My guys for the final would be: Marciniak, Lahoz, Taylor, Makkelie, Faghani. I don't think the CONMEBOL referees did good enough and they had the final 4 years ago. Turpin lacks management skills to go the absolute top and the same counts for Ramos imo.

    4. Considering there were two Italians and two Argentinians in the last five WC finals, I think this one in Qatar is for Faghani. A world-class ref, Collina knows too well his unique skills under pressure and in terms of managing hot clashes featuring bigwigs. Being held in the Middle East, it makes sense to award the championship match in 2022 to one of the best match officials from AFC. Perhaps the best ever from AFC.

    5. Faghani, Orsato, Mateu Lahoz are my 3 candidates for the final

Makkelie, I don't doubt your abilities, but I don't think this WC will arrive.
I saw it in a QF

Turpin does not convince me ... I feel that something is missing

Marciniak: After this round of 16, what I hope is that they give him a QF and an SF

      I don't like Siebert, I admit it

Vincic can go to Slovenia happy

Taylor and Oliver are intriguing, personally, I see Oliver in BRA-KOR and I leave Taylor for QF

      Kovacs will be for WC26

Frappart, I hadn't thought of it that way and you're right, why not the match for third place?
I would be happy to see her again as long as France leaves

  15. Japan x Croatia - RAMOS
Brazil x Korea - LAHOZ OR OLIVER
Morocco x Spain - TELLO OR RAPALLINI
Portugal x Switzerland - TURPIN OR AL-JASSIM (well-deserved prize for good performance from Qatari match official)

    Safe options for QFs
    GOMES
    CLAUS
    TAYLOR
    MAKKELIE

  16. In Russia, Pitana was appointed to a Ro16 and QF clash, I wonder if they will follow the same suit. That will obviously be an indication.
I think Faghani might get MOR v SPA (It's between him and Mohammed for me on that match).
QF's potentially Ramos, Faghani (if he performs well in ro16) or Rappalini, Oliver and Claus
SF's for me Orsato & too early to say
3rd Marciniak wouldn't surprise me (again a bit early)
Final - too early to call for me (would like to see a confed outside of Conmebol & Uefa if I'm honest).

    1. If Marciniak wants to officiate a WC Final, it is in his hands, for WC26 he will be 45 years old (if everything goes well) a perfect age for a WC, if he continues with his excellent physical shape and does not lower his level in the 4 years that follow...
God, first candidate for the final for sure

BUT, for sure, he will have to compete with Makkelie

In 4 years the final, or it is for the Polish, or it is for the Dutch I am 100% sure

  17. I think that SF, Third place game and Final predictions are premature. But there are lots of names with chances to get something big: I can not imagine Faghani for the final after Uruguay-Portugal, but who knows...
I think Orsato get rather QF or SF, but maybe he could be another Italian referee for the final...
I think we will see Elfath again, and in case of an excellent performance in KO stage he still could be final candidate also for political reasons, Ramos and Mateu Lahoz could be the strong final candidates, just like Turpin, Oliver and Taylor (of course it depends which teams will continue to the later stages of the tournament). For politicals reasons it is likely there will be not a CONMEBOL referee in the final and I also think FIFA would prefer also non-UEFA referee, but a lot of things still could happen , very difficult to predict now... Iván Barton is a very pleasant surprise of this WC...
I am curious, if we can see Siebert again or not. I am curious too, which names will get rest of round of 16 games and QF matches.

  18. About the final...
Faghani would need an extremely, good performance to be even a candidate again after his last, really poor performance.
If we talk about the Europeans, I could imagine Marciniak, Turpin, and, yes, Mateu Lahoz - he would deserve that, but I am afraid, he has not many friends in the committee.
From Africa, I could think about Ghorbal, but thats not so likely.
Conmebol: Both Brazilians are strong so far, I personally would like to see Sampaio in a final.
And lets not forget the Mexican. Ramos IMO has realistic chances.
