  1. Exchanges UEFA - CONMEBOL continue.
A Portuguese trio led by Joao Pedro Silva Pinheiro will be UEFA guest at CONMEBOL SUB20 2023, to be played on next month.
After Luis Godinho another Portuguese will visit CONMEBOL.

    1. Might we expect a Conmebol trio in 2023 U21 Euro?

I think all UEFA referee teams in Conmebol tournaments so far have been Iberian (Gil Manzano's trio + De Burgos Bengoetxea & Munuera Montero as VAR in 2021 Copa América, Braz Bastos with a Portuguese and a Spanish AR in Women's Copa América, Godinho & now Pinheiro)

I understand for language reasons but I think that it has to change!

    2. You are right, I forgot Braz Bastos, it seems as UEFA sends only Portuguese and Spanish referees due to language issues. They should change, indeed.

  2. Mark my words: Turpin is the pre-arranged referee for the World Cup final 2022. Another political choice. An arrangement between FIFA/UEFA and France.

They have optimally prepared him; Europa League final 2021 - FIFA Club World Cup 2022 - Champions League final 2022. There are imho no other explanations for his quick run.

Good luck to him and his crew. I hate such pre-arrangements, though...

    1. I think Kovacs shows maybe European assignments don't mean so much. The CWC finals are historically either a consolation for a top referee just short of a final or a preparation for referees from smaller areas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_FIFA_Club_World_Cup_finals)

    2. France is likely to beat England and even go all the way to WC Final. That means Turpin cannot officiate the final match. Too bad

  3. All the best to team Turpin, maybe last match of Cyril Gringore tonight.

  4. Thats a dive fron Richarlison where is VAR???

  5. Never never never a penalty. 10/10 for the diving Olympics. Reckon that may have cost Turpin the final.

  6. I think it's not VAR stuff since there is contact, but that penalty is too soft and too easily whistled by Turpin.

    1. Not a soft penalty at all, keep in mind that replay slows motion.

  7. Must be about 3 minutes to be added on already with these choreographed celebrations!

  8. Come on! Clear PK. No Room for discussion

    1. Thank you. Videos of such situations have been used to train referees at every level, for years. This is a codified PK, regardless of the diving.

    2. Exactly. Despite spetacularization It was PK

    3. +1. Richarlison read the ball better than the defender and was carelessly kicked.

  9. One should say that in this scenario all people expect penalty, Italian commentators were fully convinced about it, and I think in case of play on they would have been astonished. It's easier to explain the penalty call here, than play on, never a mistake in all cases, but surely Brazilian attacker uses the situation, as Korean defender has not any awareness of him and the contact looks rather soft.
Still OK for me in the overall picture.

    1. +1. It's softer that what it seems at first glance, but my instant thought watching the game live was 'penalty'

    2. In slowmotion it was nothing, really.

  10. I hate these penalties but it was. Especially looking at other calls in this tournament like the goalie gloves penalty.

  11. What kind of positioning at the pitch!? Come on Turpin

  12. So many are prepared to attack non-uefa referees for their penalty decisions, but Turpin's is acceptable because he's European.

Some of the biases in this blog are amazing.

    1. No, it's acceptable because he kicked a player on the foot. It's always a foul because it's the definition of being careless. Attacker got the ball, defender got the foot.

    2. But 2 weeks on, people continue to claim Elfath's penalty was wrong - this Brazilian pen had less contact!!

    3. +1
      In slowmotion it was nothing

  13. Oh what a goal! Brazilian style!

  14. The opening game of WC14 is revived, who do you think will take over the CRO-BRA?
    I go with Oliver

    1. Would be too shocking to read Barton name? :)

    2. Chefren: Barton is of course possible for Ned-Arg and also Cro-Bra :-) Just like Elfath.

      Delete
    3. Sorry, Elfath only for Ned-Arg, no way had two games of the same team in a row...

    4. Barton on individual merit maybe, but with AR problems and less political support, seeing him with another whistle would be shocking.

  15. Cro-Bra? Maybe Gomez or Mohammed, or somebody from UEFA (Oliver, Makkelie, Taylor, Lahoz, Orsato...). I don't expect someone who already had RO16 game, but everything is possible.

    1. But thinking about it if FIFA wants to maintain the rule, if Ramos performs well tomorrow
      why not?

      Delete
    2. Although I believe that Mohammed would definitely deserve another game, he doesn't stand a chance of being appointed for BRA - CRO

      Delete
    3. Cesar Ramos officiating Brazil is virtually impossible. Brazilian FA would never accept it due to BRA-SWI four years ago.

    4. Got this feeling that have to give Arab nations referee another big appointment. I'll pick Mohammed for BRA-CRO

  16. If that PK was whistled in a final or against a top country, Monsieur Turpin would be screwed. Very soft call imo. In real speed it looked a stonewall penalty, in slowmotion it's nothing.

    1. In slow motion most fouls look way softer than they were...

    2. How is Turpin ment to see in slow motion. I would love to 😍

      Delete
    3. @VG disagree. Slowmotions make a foul or SFP's always looks worse, unless there is barely a contact like here.

    1. Mmmh absolutely not. He finished it 4:00 on the dot.

    2. No sir, he finished it at 2:59 I'm 100% sure

Although it doesn't matter because everything was already defined lol

    4. OMG you are right
It was a mistake on my television, what a shame, sorry...
      i feel so dumb

  18. A boarderline soft PK and several minor mistakes, foul detection average, sometimes strange positioning, all in all not so bad - but not really convincing imo.

  19. PK - Attacker was kicked. It's careless, like it or not. No way VAR can step in once referee calls it.

FIFIA highlights showed a hilarious offside situation in 67' where FRA keeper parried a ball into a prone KOR attacker's bottom. I hope AR raised flag for that. :)
