  2. now marciniak for FRA-MOR, no idea for the final (Ramos?)

  3. It was hard not to get 20 points in the prediction game.

  4. So surely Marciniak for the final. But in case of CRO-MAR final they may save Ramos to avoid breaking confederation rule. Let’s see

  5. Final: Marciniak semi2: Makkelie?

  6. Does anyone think Oliver could get the final

    1. If France don't qualify, yes.

    2. Yes, Oliver is much better than Lahoz or Makkelie. Oliver is the same high level as Marciniak and Turpin, but Turpin is exluded due to France being in the semifinal.

    3. Oliver is left,mission complete

  7. Safe pair of hands Orsato, final is up for grabs now though, I think it'll be Makkelie. Marciniak in the other SF between FRA-MAR

  8. One of the most expected appointments, it was mandatory to get 20 points at the predictions game indeed :)
Orsato clearly kept for this game during this quite long time after his second appearance in group stage. Even more when committee realized that it could have been Brazil - Argentina. Then Brazil got eliminated, but this was the game for which the Italian was planned.
For clear reasons, and I agree, he couldn't get final assignment, otherwise he would have been first candidate after the two excellent officiatings. Nevertheless, I can't blame FIFA, another Italian in final would have been too much, and even more Irrati as VAR, having already handled it. Indeed Irrati was not so much used at this WC, I think this can be his last appearance in this role in the major tournaments, he could go on for a long time as VAR PRO, but surely he has already a very long experience and in a couple of years he could directly retire from refereeing.
A few words on Mohammed, again fourth official, this was clearly a poor management by committee, the referee from UAE should have got at least a KO stage, I'm really sorry for him, but he paid the extreme poor reputation of his confederation after the notorious facts involving other officials from Asia at this tournament.
About the other semifinal, I just want to underline again that I find very strange to see a referee like Makkelie with only two group stage assignments, for the other UEFA top you can have explanation, but once the Dutch was the first referee for which confederations rule was broken at this World Cup, it sounds weird to see him out from everything. So now with NED out, indeed Marocco - France seems his last chance, we will see. Marciniak got a Round of 16 as second game and his situation can be different, having also chance to get directly the final, on paper. But let's wait for Semifinal 2 appointment before talking about the rest.

    1. Same thoughts here. But with FIFA you never know ;)

  9. Surely Oliver must be the Number 1 choice for the final after 3 faultless displays otherwise the marking system is all to pot.

    1. He would be a good choice now that England have left. No drama almost guaranteed.

    2. I think it won't be Oliver this time, but for WC2026... Attention!

  10. Not a surprise for me, expected appointment as I feel committee have been saving him for this

  11. In have a very early prediction to make : 2022 World Cup Final referee will be César Arturo Ramos Palazuelos (Mexico)
That was SOHAM prediction 4 years ago!, so maybe he was right...

    2. Clairvoyant indeed. I do see Ramos somewhere in the mix for either second SF or Third Place match.

  12. Marciniak wasn’t present on the EURO last year because he wasn’t performing well. (long covid?) He hasn’t done any final so far.

Makkelie came to the SF at the EURO and he did the Europa League final, so has more experience.

So Makkelie is in front of Marciniak, imo. Also considering fitness - Makkelie is the fitter of them both & his positioning is better. Marciniak, who I rate very highly personally does seem to end up blocking pass lines and getting in the way more frequently than he should.

    1. Marciniak got COVID right before euro2020, also suffered back injury.

  13. Personally, I would have excluded Marciniak from final considerations. Not with regard to his performances so far but rather after having studied his palmares: Not that impressive appointments in major FIFA tournaments like a Club World Cup final etc., compared for example to that of Ramos.

  14. Any chance of Claus getting another game?

  15. Did any of the referee trios leave the tournament after QFs, any news?

    1. Turpin has left I am led to believe

    2. Oliver, Turpin, Lahoz, Frappart have all left from UEFA, and both the Argentinean counterparts have gone, along with Victor Gomes

  16. Orsato seemed to be the forgone conclusion for Argentina-Croatia. This will be Orsato's second time this tournament officiating Argentina. As for the second Semifinal France-Morocco, I can see either Makkelie or Ramos (which the Dutch and Mexicans are now eliminated). Ramos has had a excellent tournament. If it wasn't Morocco in the SF, I would put my money on Elfath instead. As for the Final, I was pushing hard for Marciniak due to his performances so far. But I am thinking after Oliver's standout performance in Croatia-Brazil and England being eliminated, the Final is down to the Pole an Englishman. Time will tell tomorrow when we get the second Semifinal appointments.

  17. For you, who was the biggest disappointment of the tournament?
    For me, Beath.
Too much was expected of him (well, I expected a LOT of him) with his resume it was very easy to get excited about achieving something big in Qatar, but it didn't happen

    And the biggest surprise?
    Without a doubt, Barton.
I truly believe that nobody in this blog believed that the Salvadoran would do so well, as I have already said, I belong to CONCACAF and I have seen him a LOT of times, I had the opportunity to see him live and never I was impressed but well, congratulations to him

    1. Have you seen Beath in Australia? I know he’s had a couple of big appointments but he’s not a great referee. Saying that I thought he did okay in his game (only saw the second half). I hope they focus on Alex King for 2026 and beyond, watch out for him

    2. Completely agree @ Oliver. People who usually follow AFC referees will understand Beath is not good at all. He is very "lazy" on the field and lack of communication with the players.

    3. The biggest disappointment IMO is Gomez. He was ok in his first game, which was a low-profile match. He was bad in Spain-Japan. Not good enough in foul detection and issued some wrong YCs. Based on his performance, he does not deserve to get KO. I agree with you regarding the biggest surprise candidate, and maybe I will add Oliver here.

    4. I agree on Beath and Barton.
If Makkelie doesn't get another match, he is also a strong candidate for biggest disappointment.

  18. Ivan Barton could be new Irmatov, I think he may have a shot at FRA v MOR, Qatarian will officiate 3rd place match as a favor to host.

    2. Irmatov was more impressive than Barton, but I agree Barton has been good and consistent

    3. I agree! Especially how "impressively" bad Irmatov was in Argentina v Croatia 2018 ;)

    5. Indeed, especially when compared to him at 2010 and 2014. In 2010, he showed good talent at WC when he was very young. Five games in one WC was just amazing. In 2014 Ecuador-Switzerland, he showed the most representative case of foul advantage in football history. He did a number of AFC Cup finals + AFC Championship league finals + 1 CWC final + 11 WC matches What a legend he is! IMO Irmatov is the best AFC referee; If not the best, he is at least among the top 3.

    6. One of many, many things that Busacca did reprehensively as FIFA manager was ruin the excellent Irmatov and Nishimura with 'Busaccaism' refereeing... :/

They were fantastic in 2010!! But AFC referees are 'different' to UEFA/CONMEBOL and the ideology change was enough to destroy them both, unfortunately.

    8. @Mohamed, thanks for the correction
@Mikael, well said and I feel in the same way. Irmatov was definitely outstanding in 2010, but I am not 100% agree with Nishimura. He was ok in 2010 WC, but not his way to use YC and RC was very random, He was not convincing enough especially in New Zealand-Paragury and Brazil-Netherland. Also, I was very surprised he was chosen to get the opening game in 2014 WC, and unfortunately, he was awful and he was the one make impact on the match result. Also, I think Irmatov was one of the top candidates to get 2018 WC final, but we all know what happen. Irmatov did AFC Cup final 2019 but retired in the same year. I respect him a lot and I hope to see the "second" Irmatov in AFC very soon

    9. That's a very fair point about his disciplinary control! :). For me, he was still at the top though, probably even moreso than Irmatov (only just), his games were overall more challenging I think... but ofc I understand opinions/views can differ about that.

  19. Does anyone have the list of referees selected for the women's WC playoffs for the month of February?

    ReplyDelete
  20. The competition is WC and I think that the Committee will not appoint only European referees. So, in semi2 or in the final I expect at least one out UEFA ref. and the obvious is CONCACAF.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Big big disappointment do not see Hassan and AI-Jassim in KO stage. Both of them are 100% deserve to get a KO. Ridiculous decision to exclude all AFC referees even though some of them showed very good quality. This feeling is just terrible!!

    2. Don't see confirmation in the usual places, but not too surprising for me if FIFA wants to guarantee neutrality given Ramos is the only other option and only final option remaining with no conflict.

  24. Some information indicates that FIFA sanctioned Faghani and Siebert for their mistakes in the Uruguay games...

  25. And “some information” indicates that FIFA has appointed four referees from Argentina and Brazil to 12 matches in this tournament only because of their merits :)

    1. Well...I am not from either Argentina or Brazil, but I think three of them did a good job overall (Sampaio was bad in England-France, I know, but his first three matches was good/ok). We also saw Tello did a good job in KO stage, huge congratulations to him. What I do not understand is Elfath, from my point of view, he was terrible in his first game. He got his second and third one because of the reasons which are not related to performance. I hate to see this happen, which minimizes the opportunities for referees who did well in group stage to get KO games.
