2022 FIFA World Cup - Referee predictions - Quarterfinals (I)

The predictions game continues with the first part of Quarterfinals.

You have to guess the exact referee for each game by filling in a form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname (it must be always the same for all your future predictions) and then for each game just select the referee

Send your predictions here:
**

In order to give you more time to send predictions, we have decided to split some KO stage rounds, this is the first part of Quarterfinals, with games to be played on 9 December.
Appointments are expected on 7 December. When published, the predictions will be officially closed. The predictions sent after that (official time will be checked) will not be accepted.

Points will be assigned according to the following pattern:

10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
5 points if a guessed referee for a game will be appointed as fourth official
3 points if the appointed referee is from the same confederation as the guessed referee
2 points if the guessed referee is in charge of the paired match for the next round*
1 point if a referee is appointed for the same stage

* =
QF: Al Bayt (10th Dec) paired with Al Thumama (10th Dec)  -> Winners facing each other in SF
QF: Lusail (9th Dec) paired with Education City (9th Dec) -> Winners facing each other in SF

A special thank to Philipp, who once again is here to help us and he will be responsible for collecting your predictions.
The modules for next rounds will follow in due course.

    1. Matonte's performance in Croatia - Canada was solid, but it is improbable to get one game in group stage and after directly QF...

    2. I also doubt that we will see Matonte in a quarter-final game. But I could image that FIFA will appoint his team mates as (any kind of) VAR in the final stages, also with regard to the way Uruguay failed to reach the Round of Sixteen.

    1. The winner of Spain - Portugal would face the winner of England - France in the semi-final; I doubt that Turpin would be a wise choice for that game.

Brazil’s spot-kick was correctly awarded - Richarlison judged the ball better than the ball-swinging Jung, and the Brazil attacker was carelessly kicked. Penalty. Korea Republic would have been awarded an indirect freekick in their first WC at the 39’ scene, but the nowadays carte blanche for even clear cases of impeding w/contact means that Turpin awarding a penalty here would have been very surprising. It would also have been correct if Korea were awarded another penalty in the 2H, as Silva clearly jumps into Cho as the ball is being centred. The attacker had won the position and was simply barged over. Turpin and Brisard, in accordance with wider expectation it seems, saw no issue though.

    — ends —

The second of two boring football spectacles yesterday was refereed adequately by Clément Turpin, unchallenged as he and his French crew were. There was a good reaction after a deliberate foul by Cho on Neymar (10’), a credible caution to Jung at 44’ (the game’s only one), a slightly tetchy mid-part of the 2H (61’-69’ ish), and not neccessarily completely focused end to the game (eg. missed corner at 90’), but really very little to remark upon about this World Cup knockout tie. I feel quite sure that the French trio will not work any further games in Qatar, and they can reflect on what were three solid WC2022 performances together.

    1. In addition, Upstylon wrote a very good report about Ismail Elfath's performance in JPNCRO, which can be accessed here:

    2. "I feel quite sure that the French trio will not work any further games in Qatar".

Why? Collina and Wenger observed him yesterday and both UEFA and FIFA have pushed him blatantly.

    4. Explain yourself, sir. Turpin is one of you fav referees, but you don't put him on the shortlist for the final, despite his EL + UCL final and strong politics? Interesting... :D

  6. Oh my days...

"Peter", then "Jonas" and now "Antov" (respected blog users and now Ukranian-seeming name?)... yes, *somebody* noticed that!! (Me).

You should know MUCH, much better sir.

    2. If Cuneyt Cakir officiate World Cup 2022, I think he will officiate World Cup final as a honour as one of most legendary referee, record 3 Euros and 3 World Cups, and he already get FIFA license from 2006, so if he officiate World Cup, he will become the most senior FIFA World Cup referee(16 years FIFA license)

  8. From your point of view it's possible to give final of World Cup for Marciniak without final UCL or UEL?

    1. This is the issue. Theoretically, Orsato, Lahoz and Turpin should be ahead of Makkelie and Marciniak. Anyway, sooner or later, that unwritten rule that the UCL final referee had done the UEL final before will be broken again.

  9. Collina observed Turpin yesterday. The rumors about Turpin being pre-arranged might be true. I had the impression that the French was very nervous before the game.

  10. If we apply that unwritten rule we discussed a few days ago, that the referees that have their country still in competition go home before QF, we remain with Elfath, Marciniak, Orsato, Ramos, Faghani(?) and maybe, only maybe by a huge surprise Gomes. This is not possible, forget about it. Frankly, I am shocked of what AFC got this tournament, a lot under expectations, Beath and Faghani were saw among frontrunners.

    1. Yes, but that rule obviously doesn't exist (not even unwritten), see Ricci and Cunha in 2018.

  11. Unfortunately, I can't find Lahoz's place in QF and SF. I suppose that the confederation rule will be broken only in Argentina's game and not Brazil too. And in Argentina-Netherlands can't be Lahoz because they speak Spaniah in Argentina. If there are surprises and Croatia-Netherlands in Semis, then yes, this is his game. Otherwise, I don't think is possible. The other half of the bracket is close because of Spain. Maybe 3rd place game for him? This would be a great end of career.
The Brazil-Croatia appointment is particulary difficult to guess. Ramos look like the only option, but why they appointed him to Portugal-Switzerland is beyond my understanding. This way Collina really limited his options. And about Orsato, if not the big final, then a semifinal should be in his pocket. He has a big advantage of neutrality. For the big final, I think yesterday we witnessed the direct duel between Turpin and Elfath. The question is: who did better?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I would say Elfath, because he had to keep his focus for 120 minutes and his game was a lot 'tighter'. Turpin was in the middle of a walk-over and much helped by the respectful Koreans who immediately accepted the soft PK call.

The management-style of Elfath and Turpin is like a night and day difference. The more distant, serious- and angry looking French or the cheerful, jolly Elfath who can light up a room with his smile. :D

    2. In my opinion, we see totally different Turpin at this WC. He easily connects with players, smiles and talks much as well.

      Delete
    3. Ok I missed that, then. Yesterday he looked angry and nervous in 1st halve, didn't pay much attention to 2nd halve.

    4. Lahoz for Netherlands-Argentina is possible, just like Spanish speaker Rapallini has Spain - Morocco today.
I agree it could be battle Elfath vs Turpin for the final, and I would prefer Elfath: he could have a small advantage because of his confederation neutrality in case of UEFA vs CONMEBOL final, but it probably won't be the first criterium for FIFA.

  12. At the last WC two referees entered the knock-out stage from quarter-finals (Mažić and Ricci) and two referees jumped directly from group stage into the semi-final (Cunha and Çakır). We can see that they distributed it between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Orsato and Mateu Lahoz should be sure from UEFA's side. But difficult to find their CONMEBOL 'counterparts' this time - Claus and Tello?
