  1. The Dutch FA (KNVB) announces that Allard Lindhout will be at EURO U21. Originally with AR's Rogier Honing and Erwin Zeinstra. Unfortunately has Zeinstra private circumstances and therefore he can't be there. He will be replaced by Patrick Inia. Personally a big blow for Lindhout I think. Having such an experienced AR at the line is always a big help. Not that i wan't to be disrespectful to Honig and Inia.

  2. I more and more have the impression that Erik Lambrechts internationally has become the N°1 referee in Belgium : nothing heard anymore about Lawrence Visser... He seems to be very low appreciated/rated by Rosetti and his team. Unless he would be injured (but I don't think so). Too bad... No Belgian Elite referee to be expected in the next 3 to 5 years neither, if you ask me. Unless if Lambrechts now all of a sudden makes steel progress

    1. Let's wait and see how Lawrence Visser starts the season. Perhaps he'll put in an excellent performance for his UCL group stage match. As for Erik Lambrechts, the serious source confirmed, he's almost N°1 in Belgium now. Visser whistled de last U21 and after this, he get his first game in UCL. Maybe the same for Lambrechts. I wait for September for response in my answer

  5. Is there anybody who can tell something about these appointments? Are they expected for some of the referees? Or are they a test? Can we already have a indication on who is in focus by the committee for the final or knock-out phase?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What I noticed is that the top game goes to Lindhout, a category 2 with a regular observer. Obviously an early test, to see if he’s ready for a knock-out game.

One the other hand, there are two category 1 referees with very important observers (Vassaras and Carballo) in so-so games. Potential final referees?

A bit early to conclude, but it seems the same strategy as at the EURO, where potential final referees (Kuipers + Brych) were a bit more hidden at the early stages.

    2. I think the best referee that attend at this tournament is Joao Pinheiro. In a decent form, he should be the favourite for the final. His European appointments and performances were pretty good this season. Other candidates are in my opinion Lindhout, Rumsas and why not, Delajod - a young referee that I liked every time when I watched and I think has all the chances to achieve in career like Turpin.

      Delete
    3. Regarding Delajod, the fact that he is so young (30 years) and already got the Youth league final recently could be a disadvantage.
For Sweden, the full focus is on Nyberg (cat1) for some time now. If we consider that, it would be surprising to suddenly see Al-Hakim in a final…
Feşnic - why not? I think he will be better than Petrescu. And obviously has political support.

Personally I hope that the final referee will be from a country that really needs to develop its referees. Belgium is lacking an Elite for some time now - it could be a good tournament to develop Lambrechts. Norway (Eskas), same. Pinheiro is a good shout, indeed. And imo Lindhout has been very consistent for a long time now. It’s mindblowing how long it takes to promote him.

      Delete
    4. Keep in mind that France and Portugal are favorites, so it might be a no go for Pinheiro and Delajod.

  6. What a 2nd half for Culima so far.

He whistled 2 penalties, for 1 he gave straigh RC and also he showed straight red for late, late challenge. That decision can be backed,as for rest of the decision, well,I tuned in late,if anyone watched full match maybe that someone can add more detailed report.

    1. First RC was shown when Danish defender saved a goal-bound shot with his hand. Difficult to tell whether Danish keeper could have saved this shot or not, at least this RC could also be supported.

  7. Clips of the aforementioned DENWAL U21 game (referee Ante Čulina)

37' PK for Denmark + YC for WAL7 (SPA, no attempt to play the ball): https://streamable.com/yh7y4s

47' PK for Wales + RC for DEN4 (DOGSO handball clearance saving a goal): https://streamable.com/ugrtye

    59' PK for Wales: https://streamable.com/tvz58u

    80' RC for DEN21 (SFP): https://streamable.com/fq026b

IMO, the second red card decision is quite good. The point of contact isn't too dangerous, but:

    -Tackle as an attack
-High force, losing control of his body
-Context: Minute 80, a challenging game with lots of KMIs & just in front of the opponent team's bench. If it wasn't for the quick RC + body language (strong whistle, sprint, flash card) a mass confrontation would have probably broken out. You might manage a tackle like this with a YC + strong warning in minute 15 and in the opposite side, but in this case and thinking in terms of match control RC looked like the best decision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow, that was intense for a new international referee. Anyway, from what I see decisions can be supported, although without watching the game, I think a YC in the last situation would probably be enough.

      Delete
    2. 1st RC absolutely correct, 2nd is wrong IMO. You can’t give a red card just for control purposes. The way he would’ve managed the situation is the one thing that shows his quality, keeping in mind, of course, that some situations are unmanageable.

    1. I praise UEFA. Under a certain point of view, still not enough, knowing the person (he will not care about that), but definitely good punishment. In Italy this season has been always one match of ban after a sending off, regardless of his behavior and he also insulted referees.
Some days ago Rocchi talked to a radio saying that they don't have any personal issue with Mourinho, he was asked about the management of the Portuguese during the season, but in my opinion this answer was not acceptable, he didn't admit that the Portuguese was allowed to do everything by most of referees. At least in UEFA we can see something different.

  9. Not easy tournament without VAR for the officials.
We have already some possible controversial offside flags in BEL - NED, minute 4', with promising attacks stopped.
It looks definitely like another football..

    5. Vítor Ferreira since the very beginning of the season was on route to be relegated. Surprising how he got a FIFA badge…
Fábio Melo relegation is under discussion since he was out for injury.
Fábio Veríssimo deservedly demoted to UEFA 2nd cat. and António Nobre deservedly promoted to UEFA 1st cat.
João Pinheiro situation doesn’t seem to be definitive, as he is no. 2 to promotion (after Glenn Nyberg)… since it’s a more important decision, maybe FPF are waiting to announce it. Let’s wait until 1st July.

      Delete
    6. I don't understand how Pinheiro doesn't reach an elite. It is, like Nobre, Portugal's best bet in UEFA.
PEREIRA, Cláudio (36y) may become the new FIFA referee in Portugal

      Delete
    7. I’m sure he will. Will be shocked if not. So let’s wait until Elite is revealed.
Along with Cláudio Pereira, some other (João Gonçalves) might join since Ferreira was relegated, since there was a spot already announced, and a new opening caused by the other’s drop.

  17. Through this link I had asked questions about UEFA Categories and Euro 2024.

First I want to thank everyone whoform to haveentered. The one who hasn't done this yet may do so via the link below.
    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc9BZNH37BAkIRJEmN5JZhdquGM4iFBAelLXEUZgSK2Et6boA/viewform

I will publish the answers about Euro 2024 later. But the answers about the categories I will publish now.

There are some surprising answers, though. There is no right or wrong answer. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

At the time of this publication, 27 people have(including myself) answered.

On question 1 I askedwhich referee do you see stopping at the end of the season or year?

You see next to the namehow many people of the 27 have indicated this name.

    Your answers were:
    Kulbakov Alexey - 2
    Taylor Anthony - 2
From Cerro Grande Carlos - 21
Mateu Lahoz Antonio Miguel - 26
    Stelker Tobias - 1

    Hategan Ovidiu Alin - 2
    Kovacs Stephen - 1
    Karasev Sergei - 3
    Neck William - 6
    Slavko Vinčić - 1

You won't see the other elite referees stop this season/year.

Question 2 was about who are your top 10 umpires you like to see promotion from the first category to the elite category.
Of the 52 names listed in the first category there are only 7 who have no voice, which means there are 45 referees who at least got 1 vote.

The umpires who did not get a vote are:
    Ruddy Bouquet
    Kruashvili Giorgi
    Stegemann Sascha
    Stavrev Aleksandar
    Stefanski Daniel
    Fesnic Horatiu Mircea
    Ivanov Sergei

    3. I can hardly see a foul by Israeli player.
Very harsh decision, rather wrong for me, but again there are few elements for supporting (less than the penalty, for me).

      Delete
  26. Very good decisions in penalty areas by Fesnic, at first a correc assessment of a fair challenge by keeper about 10 minutes ago (start of second half), could have been easily deeived by whistling penalty, and now simulation (56'), well spotted.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 69' CZE - ENG: very particular decision to disallow a goal, I think coming from Fourth Official.. Fesnic had allowed it, as well as AR, but then they changed idea because on a free kick English player didn't respect the distance, according to what I could understand...

    1. OK Penalty but for me it is borderline between careless and reckless and more belonging to the former category. Not all referees would have whistled it.

  29. 90'+3 another simulation decision by Fesnic, in this case I think he punished player more because after the incident he asked for penalty, but the fall could have been easily assessed as normal contact with opponent and not as attempt to gain a penalty. Vey strict approach toward unsporting behavior, the Romanian has issued many cards in a game that one could describe as rather fair.
Nevertheless all major decisions OK, but one could expect more interaction with players to prevent some possible infringments.

    1. Extremely unlucky for the Dutch because this happened in one of the most watched game, France - Italy. I think still no responsibility on this goal, but fans with a different idea...
I can add, Italian sport press had already denounced that a tournament like this without VAR was something not acceptable by UEFA, now, I can imagine the newspapers tomorrow. And he is already appointed for a second game...

      Delete
    2. So, it is never a referee's fault. It is UEFA, Mourinho, the players, the aliens... But nobody here will acknowledge the disgraceful level of refereeing that we are witnessing on a daily basis. I am really amased what a gap there is between the level of football nowdays (top athletes, medical inovations, tactical analyses, etc.) and the level of refereeing.

      Delete
    3. If it was up to me Lindhout would be sent home tonight, I think it's weird that the committee makes appointments even before all games has been played. Unfortunately this just shows that UEFA don't value this tournament as high as you would expect them too. This is not just a very good tournament for players to show their value but also for the referees, but you have to give them the best resources to do so. I don't think you can defend Lindhout's performance anyway, still too much situations missed

      Delete
    4. @anonymous 22:48 UEFA clearly has the resources to implement VAR and GLT if they wanted to but still decided against it. I don't think you can just accept that from a referee point of view, but of course you can't defend this performance by Lindhout, far below the level to expect at this level

      Delete
    5. @Elliot, I even didn't pointed at the tonight horror show. I was speaking more generally. Nobody here has ever spoken about the actual level of refereeing in the modern football. We see almost every day shocking decisions - sometimes saved by VAR but also many times just covered by VAR. And still, I have never read that the level of refereeing is simply POOR.

      Delete
    6. We've always seen shocking decisions though. I think before, without social media etc, only those who actually watched the game saw them, but they still happened. Maybe there has been an increase, but I don't think it's so big that I feel you're making it out to be

      Delete
    7. You are absolutely right that we've always seen shocking decisions. But exactly here comes the main problem - in the past football and refereeing were going hand by hand more or less. Now the level of football is in a completely different orbit, and refereeing seems like it does not belong to football anymore, like a completely different organism. Every season we are twisting and rewriting rules, but referees come with less and less FOOTBALL knowledge and that's why the football people do not accept them. Also, this is the reason why referees with some football background like Mateu Lahoz or Istvan Kovacs are highly respected - because they understand the spirit of the game.

      Delete
  45. Shocking performance and no words. UEFA should reflect on this performance and their technologies not used...
But first step needs to be sent Lindhout home.

  47. Knowing how committee works, I wouldn't exclude that they will try to arrange a VAR system at least for KO stage, in a few days. Surely they can be disappointed with referees, but most important incidents were easy to solve with technology. I don't know what is the exact reason behind this choice to play tournament without VAR. In Italy in 2019 there was it, but not in 2021 (very particular edition due to COVID issues).

  48. Some referees should not have been called up for this tournament. it is obvious that they are unsuitable.

  49. And to add,as @Chefren said,he is already appointed for 2nd game.

If he stays there,I'm sure that he will do god job in that match cause both Croatia and Spain are not playing fast and on quick counter attacks like France and Italy played today.
But if you ask me,UEFA should sent him home, this kind of performance is unnaceptable.
With this performance,he is showing that refs these days are relying too much on VAR,there is no courage to make any crucial decision that is not clear and obvious and it was just painful to watch him tonight being in deeper and deeper hole.

We have another example from today,Delajod.
He also did not have a VAR,had a challenging match but he dealt with those situations without any problems, had every bit of courage to make crucial decisions and was everywhere.

As bad as it sound,Lindhout should be lucky that Italians temper did not boil over,I mean we all remember lasz u21 when they got RC's almost every game,so I was surprised that there was no protests except on last missed goal.

  50. Moral of the story: Dutch referees must not be appointed for Italy's opening game in U21s - Gozubuyuk in ITAESP 2019, Higler in CZEITA 2021, Lindhout in FRAITA 2023.

    1. We could go further and add Makkelie from ITATUR, as UEFA apparently assessed the handball situation as wrong (although giving it would have been controversial as well). The fact that the Dutch have had Italy’s opening game in this tournament 3 times in a row is very interesting though

  51. Shocking refereeing by Lindhout. 1st French goal probably high foot, so to be disallowed. Probable push in the box for French attacker, more likely PK than not. Then crystal-clear handball, so PK for Italy missed.
He got right the RC against France, then appalling mistake of the whole Dutch team not allowing a clear goal with French defender with both feet inside the goal. Goal good by 30-40cm, completely missed.
Like this football is not entertaining, whether you are Italian or not.

    1. Sorry, I have seen it again on TV now, clear high foot on French 2nd goal, not 1st, my mistake. Also, very clear advantage not given to Italy on 1st half, it was a very dangerous situation.
Handball in French box and goal not given to Italy with French defender completely inside the goal are to be shown in refereeing courses.
After watching Lindhout, I’m 100% sure UEFA will arrange VAR for KO stages and this Dutch team of referees will go home.

    2. This is more entertaining as a neutral viewer. Without VAR there is a high chance of at least 1 huge mistake every game.

    3. 92’: not only was Lubeka completely inside the goal when he rebutted Italy’s headbutt, but he also scooped the ball out with his arm. Unforgivable mistake from Lindhout and linesman.

  52. UEFA plan is obvious for the group stage. There are 6+2 referees in Romania and 6+2 in Georgia. Exactly the number needed for every MD. So the plan should be that each of the six referees will have 2 games in GS and 1 as FO. After that, the best performers will adavance in KO. I am sure that the appointments for MD3 are already made.

    2. Lindhout will get saved as he is from Holland and will probably whistle the final. If this was referee from Andorra, Gibraltar, Ireland, Wales, Malta then the referee career would be over and no matches for the other referees from that country like usual…

  53. Wow, I think that I have watched a different game according to some of the reactions..

I agree totally that it is, to say it mildly, strange that there is no VAR and GLT on this level. It would have helped both Lindhout and the AR1 in the penalty appeal in '50. Line of sight of Lindhout is blocked if I look at the replay, arm behind the players involved. Lindhout positioned in a place where you would expect him in this situation. So how and why should we blame him for this?

Same for the situation in extra time. Player is standing on the line with the ball in between him and the post. So no clear view for AR1. He can't detect if the ball is completely over the line. So GLT was the only real solution here. Again the question, can we blame AR1 for taking this decision? I don't think so. Leaves out the possible handball for preventing a goal. Live i thought he played the ball with the hand based on the movement of the arm. It looked like a sneeky attempt to prevent a goal. But haven't seen a clear replay which gave the evedince if Lindhout was wrong or not.

What I liked the most and also find one of the most important parts of modern refereeing is managing the game. Lindhout kept respect of the players, there where no big protest or mass confrontations amongst players. That is not only credit of the players but also of Lindhout's management style. Or look at it the other way. On this blog players of Atletico or Mourinho have often blamed for their behaviour in matches where referees had a tough night.

'50 pen appeal ITA. the hand is on the shoulder. I can understand that no pen is given. Live it looked to me that the ITA player when't down very easy after just feeling the hand. FRA player is playing with fire because a penalty decision was absolutly supportable. But I wouldn't call it a black and white penalty. Looking at the positions of both Lindhout and AR2 I here would blame AR2 more than Lindhout. AR2 had slear sight of the situation. But we don't know the communication.

So all in all I wouldn't call it his best performance ever, but als not as dramatic as readers of the blog would let us beleive.

    1. If you miss a handball penalty and a super clear foul that leads to a goal. And 99% most likely a clear goal, then it’s a horrible performance.

    2. Atrocious performance from Lindhout. Clear handball from Fra defender inside box, arm well extended from body, PK 100%.
92’: Fra defender not on the line, but with both feet inside the goal. Probably hit with hand. Ball was inside 100%. AR1 also missed goal. VAR & GLT necessary at this level; I don’t care about discipline if refereeing is incompetent.

    3. Agreed, FidjeB. A superb performance and we will see him in final after his next game. Greetings from the Netherlands.

    4. Lindhout refereed so well that UEFA decided TONIGHT to use VAR £ GLT from KO stage.

  54. It's not first time when Lindhout has problem in Cluj. I didn't like him when he was at CFR-Sivaspor in Conference League where he made many mistakes, with two penaltyes should be awarded for the home team. I don't know how he was promoted for the 1 Category, i liked more Highler than him. I think Rosetti will be the final observer if Italy is not in the final. For me, it's strange that Deaconu is not appointed for the tournament, and it was Augustus Constantiin.

  55. I’m extremely curious how UEFA will assess this performance. After Taylor, any performance is excellent. At least, Lindhout has the justification of missing technology. The marvellous Tony had everything. Also, Italy’s coach complained a lot - Mourinho needs some more bans

    1. Taylor did not make big mistakes IMHO, Lindhout made mistakes with or without technology so big that any referee should not have made

    2. Funny how referees from any country other than italy are crusified here. Especially when Italy is involved. However italian clubs and refs are allowed to screw up anything. Talking about double standards. However nothing new here unfortunately

    3. Hi Anonymous 23.6 h15:28 can you name an Italian referee who made this mess? I don’t remember, sorry. It’s not a question of where you are from, it’s a question of casting the category of referees in disrepute, and Lindhout did that. You put it under a question between nations, I don’t, it’s a question of pure competence.

    4. Cause italian refs dont mess up this badly.
I cant remember the last time italian ref had catastrophic game,if I'm wrong correct me.

Only time in recent times when I did not like decision coming from italian ref in uefa or fifa competitions was when Orsato whistled penalty in favour of Argentina vs Croatia.

Other than that, I really cant remember when Maresca,Massa,Guida or Mariani made mess of some game.
Now I can remember that Mariani had questionable decisions in Barca vs ManUtd,but other than that,Italian refs are always delivering.

    5. Cro. GK goes towards Arg. attacker and obstructs his way after ball has gone past. No fault from Orsato there. His biggest mistake (dreadful) was derby Lazio-Roma in 2017 dive from Strootman in box, not even touched, and he gave YC and PK. Terrible. Otherwise he is the best.
