  1. Here the VAR interventions for red cards in Letexier's game Gambia - Uruguay:

    1) https://streamable.com/5qy671
    2) https://streamable.com/e59y5t

If in the first case it was quite difficult to spot, considering also that referee had stopped game very likely for a previous foul, in the second case, with that perfect view, the mistake seems difficult to accept. Nevertheless, can you be 100% sure about the real intention? I think that the OFR was a bit more long than expected, given the kind of incident, and I also think original idea by French was different, because he was in a too good position to make the assessment..
In all cases not good to have a game with two RCs after OFRs.

    1. Great interventions by Godinho IMO

    2. 1) obvious red card, good intervention. difficult for Letixier
      2) arm used as a tool, referee in control with yellow card.
Never ofr, to many time to call the referee is proof that it is not clear.
We can see that Letixier is not happy with this call.
Letixier should have blown his whistle faster and avoided the attacker's second action.

    3. First is hard to spot

Second, awful refereeing. Waited far too long to whistle. Not sure its a clear and obvious incident either. Not a needed RC for me

Too many OFR for Letexier and all referees in the tournament

      Delete
    4. Letexier had at least an OFR in all of his games, in the opening game ARGUZB he had one to cancel a PK because the Argentinian player touched the ball first, though almost everyone expected a PK live, IMO was rather a good spot & intervention by Delajod than a poor mistake by Letexier

The second OFR (BRADOM) was already discussed here, completely pointless RC suggestion by American VAR for an incident that was reckless at worst - Letexier gave a YC.

Then these two OFRs in URUGAM. Incidents like the 2nd one are sometimes tricky, because if you whistle quickly you possibly miss a clear advantage if the attacking player manages to escape from the holding, but if you hold the whistle too much, the attacking player might retaliate against the defender and commit a VC. RC should have definitely been given live.

I think this was the only poor performance of an otherwise quite good tournament for UEFA officials, specially not-yet-Elite Nyberg and late substitute Sánchez Martínez (along with Abatti the only referee with 4 matches)

    5. Delajod was not appointed as main VAR after his first match with Letexier?

    6. 1) Correct and mandatory VAR intervention, RC for SFP is the only correct decision here. I agree about the situation being difficult for Letexier to correctly perceive and comprehend, as he was whistling the previous foul at the same moment.

      2) RC is the better decision for me here, as I see the arm movement by the offender as a retaliatory elbow strike to the face. However, given there are questions regarding real intention of the offender and the actual force, I understand the arguments for deeming this intervention as doubtful. But let me say again: for me, this was a case of a retaliatory VC and RC should have been issued live, especially taking into consideration the perfect view Letexier had on the incident (which again creates more doubts about the VAR intervention, but still).

  2. Interesting article about former Kuipers - assistant Erwin Zeinstra in local media, 'Omrop Fryslân.' He explains in the article why he is at the WC with Gözöbuyuk (because he is in his team since January) but also why he also goes to EURO < 21 with Lindhout. He explains that he promised that to Lindhout a long time ago, before he got into the team of Gözöbuyuk. That would mean that the appointments for EURO <21 have been known for quite some time.
Zeinstra also explains that Gözöbuyuk wants to go to EURO24, and that he wants to help him with reaching that goal. Their hope is to go to the EURO with two Dutch teams, just like in 2021.
This means Zeinstra will at least go on as an international until 2024, even though he is already 46.

  3. Israel - Brazil, referee Calderón (CRC).

    OFR, penalty for handball:
    https://streamable.com/3kay4c

Second penalty for a foul immediately after the execution of the previous one:
    https://streamable.com/s6kodc

I would say good alerteness by referee in the second case, this belongs to the category of penalties that we see very often whistled, but not in all cases (apparently no VAR stuff, but this is very debatable if you ask me there should be more consistency in this regard). About the first one, the handball: maybe with more efforts referee could have looked for a good angle to see, but such incidents are always difficult to spot.

  4. Fantastic Orsato in Seria A playoffs!

    1. Fully agree, a very good performance so far. I would like to highlight some early YCs, the first one coming already in the 14' min IIRC, which helped him maintain control in a match where things can escalate very quickly, given the importance of this game. However, there was a possible missed YC for a kick to the head around 32', I think.

Optimal foul detection for this game for me and, of course, absolute control over the game and players' behaviour, as always. Let's see how things will develop in the 2H.

    2. So far he's reminded me when he was fully fit and top ref in the world.
Tonight's performance just proves why he is numero uno in Italia for so long, always on the spot, challenging moments were dealt easily.

Also Guida was good tonight in another Serie A deciding match.

    3. I must admit, Daniele Orsato is back to an excellent form, especially physical condition who helps him in controlling games. It wasn't the same some years ago, at EURO 2021 he had been poor. Then this season, including WC, despite of turning 47 years old, it seems he has found again strong motivations. In this game, correct big decision, penalty and RC for DOGSO, handball, not difficult, but extremely important. The rest was very good as well, with yellow cards, advantages and so on. EURO 2024 is waiting for him, clearly he wants the final...

Then, about Guida, mentioned by M: another great performance. It's more than a pity that he suffers very often for injury, he would have easily became Elite in UEFA... outstanding control and management of the player in an extremely challenging context lie it was this game for serie A promotion, Bari - Cagliari. It was decided in the added time of second half, many sending offs from the benches, but for the lovers of refereeing, I suggest you to watch the body language while issuing yellow card to Mancosu (Cagliari), in the last minutes, when score was still 0-0. In my opinion, only referees with strong personality can do that in such hot atmosphere..

    4. Thank goodness we get another year of Orsato at the top level - what a brilliant referee he is. Superb performance in this playoff game! I fear though he (and Irrati) spoilt it quite a bit though with no penalty / intv in +93' for deliberate handball...

    5. I watched a fair amount of Guida on a second screen and he wasn't soooo good tbh - shouting and screaming at players like a dictator, giving the impression of having lost his temper, isn't really optimal (compare to eg. pure natural leader Orsato). TO BE CLEAR though, to escape from such a game without problems is an achievement by itself and my impression, for what it is worth, was of an obviously satisfying performance overall. Guida has a great 'refereeing IQ', indeed a pity for the injuries as you mentioned Chefren.

    6. IMHO, he still belongs to the very top of this profession, despite his age. Tonight's game is a good proof of that, I think M perfectly summarized it by saying: "challenging moments were dealt easily".

Excellent 2H for me: very good foul detection/selection, clear disciplinary line with all the mandatory YCs correctly given. Some may say there were too many cards, but I disagree with such a notion: all the given cards were absolutely correct for my taste, as well as necessary to ensure complete control over a game of such importance.

All the KMIs were solved correctly IMO, including the penalty and RC for Faraoni in 68' for a handball preventing the goal (Suarez moment) and the play on in a possible handball penalty situation for Spezia in 90+3' (IIRC). Although the defender's arm was hit by the ball just above the elbow, there was nothing punishable there for me: arm was in a natural position for a jumping movement, there was no intentional movement of the arm towards the ball and the arm didn't enlarge the body surface at all (it was in front of the hip, which the ball would have hit anyway).

Lastly, let me just say that Orsato's authority, management of the players, body language and communication are absolutely topnotch, and it was the same tonight. Curiously enough, this game was way more interesting and fun to watch than last night's UCL final, at least for me, and I must say it was a real pleasure watching Orsato's performance tonight.

    7. RC - https://youtu.be/Ubesnb_35ew?t=116as
      +93' - https://files.catbox.moe/7w84he.mkv

About the latter incident: Verona defender watches the the flight of the goalkeeper's kick for 3/4 of the whole FoP (this was *the* opposite of unexpected), his arm moves towards the ball, and the arm motion fulfills a 'clearing' action for his team. With all the many guidelines about handling, it can be easy to 'miss the forest for the trees' - the first passage of the Law12 section reads...

It is an offence if a player deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball.

... this fulfilled that criteria, and should be assessed as punishable in my view (even if the authorities probably see it differently). For what it is worth, you can clearly hear that the Russian commentator agrees too.

    9. Yes, expected (long) ball, arm open, not a natural position, even a movement when ball touches... I think penalty, I can only say Orsato is very reluctant with VAR, he doesn't go to an OFR in serie A for a "normal foul" (apart from offside and other situations) by an extremely long time... but in this case difficult to find the reason for which Irrati supported.

      Delete
    10. I stand corrected, a (very) crucial mistake for me regarding the 90+3' incident. Mikael's explanation is perfect, nothing to add there. I managed to completely misread the situation, sorry for such a blunder.

After watching the footage, punishable handball for me as well. I dare to say that the referee crew probably had the same wrong perception in mind as I did when assessing this incident.

    2. Oh my God. Of course, a terrible act by the player (and his colleagues as well), but the most terrible thing here is the reaction by Tessema. Both the shirt pull and subsequent shouting are each enough to issue a RC. Leaving that player on the FoP is simply unacceptable; just look at the amount of aggressiveness he displayed. We are constantly complaining about the lack of protection for referees, but what level of protection should we expect in a situation like this, when the referee simply failed to protect himself by using the tools at his disposal? He simply looks absolutely lost in this whole situation, even forgetting to take his spray from another player when it fell off. A terrible scene indeed, but I still feel bad for him.

  8. 81': Straight RC for SFP by Nyberg for a dangerous kick against the knee. Then downgraded to YC after OFR.
IMO the RC was at least supportable and the VAR intervention therefore wrong.

An excellent RC for SFP by Nyberg downgraded to YC after VAR intervention.

    2. Completely agree with you, simply wrong VAR intervention for my taste. Why, just why?!

      Delete
    3. If they’re going to use the microphone to announce decisions, it would be nice if he at least would explain why he downgraded it. What is his reasoning for only yellow here after looking at video? When used as it was, the announcement system is redundant and useless.

  10. I dont understand how he allowed a player to pull him for the shirt... And then the same player gets in his face and protests. It should have been at least two YC, if he didnt want to give straight RC

  11. VAR exists to better judge toe-nail-offsides and to keep 11 players on the pitch. :) Modern refereeing has become something not worthy anyone's time to analyze.

Brave call by Nyberg, but utterly predictable it would be changed. Good job @San and Guzmán, mission accomplished, the bosses will be happy.

Even writing this comment is too much time wasted on FIFA refereeing.

  12. 81. minute:
    RC for Italy

The decision on the field was brave. The place of the violation is high (above the knee, knee), and the violation is made with crampons. The intervention was a very, very, very wrong decision.

The referee showed that he recognizes well the starts that threaten the safety of the opposing player.

As for the Swedish referee, I haven't been so positively surprised by a referee in a long time. To appoint a referee from Scandinavia to a match where the hot blood of Uruguayans and Italians meet... it means that you really have that something that separates you from others.

Great manager, high communication skills, natural charisma and good relationship with players, good body language... He reminds me of former Danish referee Ken Hansen.

  13. Addition of the injury time was at least one minute short (there was a 2-minute injury break in it).

Overall it looked like a quite good performance by Nyberg with good foul detection and strong management / communication. His quite lenient style seemed to work and even in the hectical final phase it didn't really escalate.
A pity, that the RC in 81' wasn't confirmed, then it would probably have been a very good performance.

    1. Also, how to prevent confrontations when teams like these two play against each other:
Always be close to the game and run between two players as soon as it seems to you that they may clash.
The Swede always acted proactively, he really made a great impression.

      Delete
    2. These prevention skills and proactive refereeing were probably the greatest aspect of the whole performance tonight; Nyberg was absolutely successful in anticipating any potential conflict that may have arisen and it paid off in the end. I can confirm this approach works in any field that includes man management: using my presence to prevent altercations and deescalate tense situations has almost never failed me in any role in law enforcement. The same can be applied in a football match, at least most of the time.

  15. Does anybody know why Delajod wasn’t appointed as a main VAR after his first game at FIFA U20? I read that his intervention was praised, but the way FIFA managed him after MD1 suggests that they were not happy tbf. IIRC the Swiss, Spanish and Dutch VAR had at least 3(?) appointments as head VAR.

Fedayi San as main VAR in the final was veeeeery predictable and not just because of his Swiss nationality. After FIFA literally burned the other ‘clean’ VAR (Higler) in the QF by pairing him with a very weak Qatari referee, instead of appointing him to Gozubuyuk’s QF. Suspicious.

High possibility to see Schärer in a Nations League game, if not injured. As consolidation for missing FIFA U20..

I wasn’t surprised to see Nyberg in the final besides being a category 1 UEFA referee amongst the Elites. And not just because of the performance principle. Nyberg might be the only UEFA ref in Argentina with a serious chance to be at WC 2026 as all the other UEFA referees (except Umut Meler..) may have a strong compatriot ahead of them: Turpin, Gil Manzano, Makkelie.

However, everything can be different in 3 years. And we can have a situation of e.g. UEFA preferring Gil Manzano vs. FIFA preferring Sanchez. And if Makkelie doesn’t find his motivation, it is possible that Gozubuyuk will pass him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Side note, I'm don’t say Makkelie had a bad season. Internationally, his VAR (van Boekel) let him down in my opinion. It is incomprehensible how UEFA kept backing Van Boekel after a missed handball in Inter vs Barca, the controversial Messi PK, Chelsea-Dortmund PK retake, Sevilla-Juventus, etc. I assumed Kuipers is the drifting force behind this, who continuously supports his friends at all costs (Sidiropoulos another example..). Reality check: performance does matter.

I like to follow the Dutch competition and domestically, Makkelie was super steady imho, I think never below 8.3-8.4 level in 2023, but at the same time body language is telling a lot. I don't see the 'hungry' untouchable referee of the 2020-2022 era. I guess we can all find good reasons for that after some big disappointments recently… What a pity, cause he was a joy to watch. I hope he (and his team) can find that 2020-2022 top form again, and if he does, he is head and shoulders above the main competition (Vincic and Kovacs). In 2023, UEFA proved to make choices based on merit. That should be a motivation on itself…

After Uruguay - Italy at WC and Marchisio RC by Rodriguez, now another case!
Sorry but how much you must be incompetent to invite to OFR after this foul... I'm surprised that Nyberg didn't confirm his original decision. Some referees have the courage to do that (Letexier, otherws always follow VAR, that's clear to me). It is very strange from a Swiss VAR to make such a mistake.
I'm sure he assessed the intensity as extremely low, but the foul itself was definitely enough for a RC and I would even say expected decision.
Hopefully in UEFA we will not see this...

"Appointing a Nicaraguan girl without experience as VAR is outrageous."
      Simply speechless...
      1) The decision is always made by VAR and not AVAR, who doesn't have this responsibility
      2) Not so elegant for a former referee of his reputation to use the term "girl" in this way, this is maybe outrageous and not her appointment. Even if you think this is a political appointment in the final, and indeed, I think there is big rivalry between Mexico and the other CONCACAF nations about refereeing. Maybe "Arbiter" wants to add more...

More and more I'm convinced that on this blog we know and understand more than even former FIFA referees... said with respect. Here the mistake is in Swiss VAR, not in the AVAR.

      Delete
    2. Let me start by saying that I find FIFA's political circus and those extremely mixed teams in a final ridiculous. It seems that a final must involve at least 3 continents of officials. That cannot be an advantage. Not starting about the differences in refereeing, perceptions of KMI’s and language differences between those continents... And the AVAR in a final being a female official…Well, we can pencil that on beforehand. I predicted Nesbitt as well. Typical FIFA and their promotion of female officials. In the meantime they do little about human rights, racism and homophobia, but that's my opinion...

That tweet is, of course, shocking and misogynistic. Indeed, this is never the AVAR's call and anyone watching football regularly should know that.

      Delete
    3. Of course it's the referee's responsibility but AVAR also has an important role. If AVAR was more experienced she would give her own opinion clearly and could "wake up" VAR. But if AVAR had been without experience she was too scared to stand up to an experienced VAR.

      Delete
    4. IMO, red card was 100% correct and indeed, you must be incompetent to invite to OFR after this foul.

      Delete
    5. It must have been FIFA instruction with respect to foul severity; otherwise, a strong referee would have stand by his original decision after OFR.
