  1. Great appointment for Orsato!

    1. Maybe "too much"? :)
In any case, I expected Rocchi there, Orsato is developing at very high level and in my opinion he deserved this game.
In addition, with this appointment, Rocchi has been saved for another game.

      Delete
    2. I think Orsato has Marciniak to thank a little bit ;)

      Delete
  3. I think we can expect Turpin and Mateu Lahoz for tomorrow... Then Skomina, Mazic, Kuipers and Rocchi for 2nd legs I would guess!

    1. In case of Rocchi appointment in Quarterfinals, only option for him is the English derby.

      Delete
    2. I think it would perfectly suit him... He is an ideal name for the English derby I think!!

    3. Predictions:

Liverpool x Man. City - Kuipers 🇳🇱 or Mazic 🇷🇸

Barcelona x AS Roma - Brych 🇩🇪 or Kassai 🇭🇺

      Delete
    4. Kassai 🇭🇺 in CL seems a little bit unlikely IMO

  4. I wish you had an absolutely fantastic Easter! All the best for this great time!

  5. Without judging, I think Collina is pushing his Italian colleagues quite a lot. Expected match for Cakir.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Even if he's pushing, surely it's not undeserved

      Delete
    2. I think that Orsato deserved this game, as RayHD reported, he was good / very good in his last EL appearance.
In addition, the Round of 16 game involving Porto and Liverpool was more than easy...
We could say that there is not a variety of appointments in CL KO stage, so far. But all the names who got games so far, deserved them... first of all, Brych appointed twice in Round of 16.

      Delete
  6. Collina is pushing the two Italian too much, expect lahoz in England and kuipers at the nou camp.

    1. It will be interesting to see whether committee has appointed Kuipers for a CL quarterfinal game, after the injury.

      Delete
    2. It will be wise to appoint him because he needs some big games before the World Cup... The fact he is in the final list clearly means that he has cleared all the rigorous fitness tests there and there is no reason he can't whistle a CL QF game... Just my thoughts!!

      Delete
    3. I'd appoint him in UEL this week and UCL second leg next one.

      Delete
    4. Won't that become too hectic a schedule for a ref?? I know Velasco Carballo got one such appointment a couple of years ago but still seems too hectic like the Cakir 2 SF appointment!!

  7. Europa League - Predictions

Arsenal x CSKA Moskva - Danny Makkelie 🇳🇱

Atl. Madrid x Sporting CP - Ovidiu Hategan 🇷🇴

Lazio x Red Bull Salzburg - Deniz Aytekin 🇩🇪 or Anthony Taylor 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Red Bull Leipzig x Marseille - Damir Skomina 🇸🇮

    1. I would want Taylor over Aytekin currently !!

      Delete
    2. Skomina will have a match at Slovenian national league at 3.4.2018

      Delete
    3. Most probably we can expect Skomina and his team next week in one of the games.

      Delete

    4. Oliver is a much better referee
that Taylor and I don´t understand
      how Taylor is Elite.

      Delete
    5. Taylor will be more like the Fernandez Borbalan type Elite ref who is there just for filling the quota of the country... Oliver is currently rated ahead of him quite clearly!!

      Delete
    6. Maybe Karasev instead of Skomina.... to prepare for the WC.

      Delete
    7. @Oliver is currently rated ahead of him quite clearly!!

Soham, can I ask how do you know that? Is it your interpretation or someone inside UEFA told you?

    1. Both YC for simulation are supportable, the second is more evident than the first. In the first situation, maybe PLAY ON was a better decision, in any case no mistake. No penalty in both situations.
RC for DOGSO is a fully correct decision, defender went clearly against the attacker without any idea to play the ball.
Penalty whistled: replay shows that attacker was clever in kicking the ball away and getting the contact, but of course penalty is the correct decision there.
Both challenges are clear YC, the first one for studs up but not excessive force (so reckless), the second action is clearly reckless as well.

      Delete
    2. I have my doubts regarding the 'genuine attempt to play the ball' interpretation. The player is late, sure, but I see his action being in the fight for the ball process. Personally, I would opt for a yellow there.

  9. No England in World Cup Referees list ..even a linesman???????

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No... And that was known from the last year when Clattenburg quit... But it's no big issue at all if you ask me because Oliver will be well and truly ready for Euro 2020... Also Taylor is there but Oliver seems a more natural candidate for big tournaments for me!!

      Delete
    2. Referees are appointed as trios so naturally there are no English ARs.

Do you think a VAR could attend WC from England? I don't think so honestly, the 'experts' of VAR are Swarbrick and Marriner are no (longer) international referees. Maybe politics says sth else though.

  11. A difficult question to answer: how many UEFA Champions League top clashes have been handled by Cakir so far in his entire career?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The count comes to 16 out of 36 matches with 5 of them coming in this season itself!!

      Delete
    2. If we count Roma, Napoli, Benfica, Porto, Marseille, Lyon as big teams and matches involving them as top clashes then this count will increase further!!

      Delete
  12. Hot minutes for Orsato.

    2. 2014/15 UEFA Champions League Final
2012 FIFA Club World Cup Final
      Only 2 major finals.
We could say he is the man of "semifinals": he officiated semifinals at WC, EURO, Europa League, EURO U21, U20 WC.
Surely, given his palmares, one could have expected more finals.

      Delete
    3. There is still chance for many - Super Cup, Europa League, World Cup, Euro??

      Delete
    4. On the paper of course there is a chance for everything.
But let me say it would sound strange, for example, to read Cakir name in Europa League final :)
The big chance for him is now with WC.

      Delete
    5. For WC he has very, very strong contenders in Kuipers, Pitana, Irmatov and Geiger too!!

      Delete
  14. Typical all over the place and hectic Orsato style. No defined line on anything.
But I enjoying watching Referee's by their own doing complicate their match. And then try to dig themselves out of the hole. Some manage to do it while others simply slip deeper. We'll see with Orsato.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Can you please elaborate what is going on there in the match and also about the referee's performance??

      Delete
    2. I truly and honestly do not see the dive by Correa(Sevilla) that Orsato saw in the 15th. More PK than dive for my taste. If Orsato wasn't going to blow for PK. He should have simply waived play on and not issued the unjust caution.

      Delete
    3. Foul but no yellow for me. first play the ball.

      Delete
    4. Orsato is failing at trying to manage the match with words instead of his whistle.

      Delete
  15. Now a correct YC by Cakir, but many complaints by Juventus because they wanted a previous foul by Real Madrid to be punished as well with YC.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rather wrong FK to Juventus at 30'... I didn't spot the foul!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Was that a missed handball by Orsato before SEV 1-0?? Huge protests and complains by BAY players... Match is heating up!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. 32nd minute. Goal for Sevilla. However possible handling by the Sevilla attacker missed by the Italian crew.
The player does gain an advantage because of the use of the arm. Hard for Orsato to spot. However AAR was in an ideal position to assist.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I expect a very big name for Bayern v Sevilla 2nd leg... This match is gettinh way more heated and challenging than JUV v RMA... Players are in aggressive mode here in Seville tonight!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bayern are the aggressors. Sevilla's only caution was unjust. Orsato deemed Correa dove when it looked a lot more like a PK in the 15th minute.

      Delete
  20. Orsato is allowing the match to turn quite combative. Bayern using overly physical play to interrupt Sevilla's play. Orsato is complicit in Bayern's tactics.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 44': penalty appeal by Juventus for an alleged deliberate handball in the box. I think supportable decision by Cakir to play on, if not totally correct. Never a clear penalty for me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correct YC for simulation for Dybala in 45'

      Delete
    2. One situation for the RAP next season... Classic grey area... I expect a more challenging 2nd half for Cakir!!

      Delete
  22. 45'+1 second penalty appeal by Juventus, simulation by Dybala.
Excellent Cakir. However, at first it looked like he had played on without any decision. Maybe input for YC due to simulation by AAR2?
    In any case, well done.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Çakir is surely one of the 'smartest' referees in the world at the moment, his understanding for what's happening around him on the pitch is extremely sophisticated, besides one foul or the other convincing first half by the Turkish.
It seems I made the wrong choice of match tonight :-D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You should switch to Seville to see one Italian referee :D

      Delete
  24. I can easily say very good first half for Cüneyt Çakır. Only 44 minute penalty appeal for handball can ve debatable however i support his decision play on.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In the last minutes of first half, I recognized again the "old Cakir". The management of simulation by Dybala and his body language is something to be watched.

      Delete
    2. The body language and authority of the "old Çakir" is what I miss the most these days... The sooner that comes back, the better it will be 😀

  25. Sevilla vs Bayern
15th minute Orsato deems that Correa from Sevilla dove to try and get a PK whistled. So Orsato cautions him. However it was never a dive. Boateng from Bayern does indeed make contact with Correa with his knee. Which causes Correa to go down.
If Orsato felt that it wasn't enough for a PK. He should have simply waived play on and kept the card in his pocket. Because it now looks as if he missed a PK and compounded the situation by unjustly cautioning the Sevilla player.

    1. Mikael was right... Most of us have selected the wrong match... :D

      Delete
    2. Honestly it's all happened because of Orsato's approach and style. He's allowed the physical combative play by failing to whistle fouls in exchange for more flow.

      Delete
  26. Good half by Cakir but a clear missed penalty to Real Madrid. Clear hand in the face. I can understand it was missed but with VAR if it was available in CL there would be no doubts.

    3. Jovan are you kidding me? Did you even watch the game? Around minute 30 Sandro hit Carvajal clearly in the face recklessly and deliberately. It was the moment when he was on the ground and Cakir stopped play.

      With replay very clear penalty.

    5. Yes. Pretty obvious foul.

      Delete
  27. Rather harsh yellow card to Sergio Ramos... Dybala clearly hit him on the face!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Minute 55': Dybala was fouled by Sergio Ramos and the latter was booked. Correct decision by Cakir. However, while falling down, Dybala hit ehe opponent in a reckless manner with his hand, but, more important, he immediately asked Cakir for booking the opponent, with a clear gesture in front of him.
This should have been a second YC, strictly according to LotG, but Cakir didn't want to become a protagonist.
For sure, second YC would have astonished everybody but it would have been a fully correct decision!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The old Çakir never hesitated while making the brave calls... Remember Hungary v Northern Ireland??

      Delete
    2. I dare to say it was brave not to show the YC. This decision absolutely falls into excellent Cakir's approach to refereeing tactics tonight.

About dealing with Mr. Sherif Castrilli, I wish one good luck to you :D

    9. My comment was not directed at Teo. It was directed directly at the individual who started this non referee related conversation.

    10. It was some aporeciation of good football that was on display and there were no comparisons made... So what was the problem with the post?? I think you're making out mountains out of molehills... There should be no problem if someone chooses to appreciate good football!!

  30. Correct second YC for Dybala in 64 min

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dybala foul could be straight RC.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 66' : Dybala is sent off... By the way wasn't this challenge absolutely identical to the Nani challenge in Man Utd v Real Madrid in 2013??

    ReplyDelete
  33. Red card now. Kind of like the famous Nani red card but this time no protests. It’s a correct red card.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cakir issued a YC this time, unlike Old Trafford :)

      Delete
    2. In my opinion in this case there was more force and it was in a way more blatant. RC is fully correct, I still didn't know the decision taken by referee, second YC or straight RC? TV here showed second YC.

      Delete
    3. I guess he thought of that :). But this time he hit him by the side and not directly like Nani. But still good to give a second yellow.

      Delete
    4. Can we think that he was warned about his decision 5 years ago? Otherwise he could easily issue rc as he knows that he would be sent off anyway.

      Delete
    5. Cakir showed a 2nd YC, Chefren... Do you back that or do you want a straight RC in this case?

      Delete
    6. I want to rewatch the incident but my impression was straight RC.

      Delete
  34. Has it all calmed down in Seville in the 2nd half??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It has. But it has little to nothing to do with Orsato himself. It's more of Bayern remembering that they are the better team who simply needs to play and stop the physical approach.

      Delete
    2. However Orsato was "baited" and fooled in the 85th minute into cautioning Muller for pretty much nothing. Muller does indeed raise his arm/hand. However he never makes contact with the Sevilla players face who goes down holding his face and rolling around.

      Delete
  35. Excellent ONSIDE by AR2 for 0-3 by Real Madrid.

    1. Steady as always... But not the very best of Cakir!! Can achieve greater perfection as he has shown in the past

    1. Not even a contact there..

      Delete
    3. I stand for what i say.. No penalty in both situations..

      Delete
    4. Situation at 30' is a clear penalty missed by Çakir 🇹🇷 IMO

      Delete
  41. Can we have somebody like Michael Oliver for the 2nd leg?? Or maybe someone like Kuipers to ease him back to high level football after injury in a not too demanding game?? Turpin maybe a good option too?? Surely Mazic or Skomina for the return would be a complete waste!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Cakir: in my opinion final mark can be 8.5. Game was close to very challenging, with some crucial decisions to be taken. Of course he was not faultless, but he got everything right about the major calls. In addition, a full control. Also, some situations in which I detected the old referee we knew.
8.5, without the minor issues, it could have been easily 8.6.
    This is my idea.
8.6 can be assigned to AR2 without doubts.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Penalty incident at 30'? Sending off situation (2nd YC or straight RC)? Was the game really "very" challenging?

      Delete
    2. I would accept a red card for violent conduct because he did put his elbow in his face without caring about the ball. But if not then it's reckless.

      Delete
    3. It was a definite missed penalty and any missed penalty is considered as a crucial mistake, isn't it??

      Delete
    4. Yes it is no matter if it's 10-0 or 1-1

      Delete
    5. Then a missed YC for Dybala in the Ramos-Dybala situation at 54' for illegal use of arms on the face... Missed YC for Cuadrado at 83' for blatant show of dissent towards AR1... I want to take another look at the last situation once again although at first glance it seems all good... Overall I can't term the match as "very" challenging and I don't think this should be anything more than a 7.7 (8.2)

      Delete
    6. This is why I don't like the grading system. If you talk about the performance overall I think we all agree he was good. But if we isolate all these situations he would get 7.7 or close to that as you say and we will think he was bad if we only look at the score.

      Delete
    7. That's why the score in the bracket becomes very important... To ensure Elite referees deliver a performance of very high standard and to ensure some consistent evaluation we need to have a grading system!!

      Delete
    8. Grading on the whole body of work isn't a great approach to evaluating Referee's. Even if the big picture overall impression of the Referee's work is good. That matters very little of he or she missed one, two, or three match outcome influencing decisions.

How many Referee's have had a game or their career marred by a single major match influencing or match changing incident? It's part of the job description. And it's the risk we take each and every timenwe step on the pitch. It is what it is.

      Delete
    9. There were other Elite referees who got marks under 7.5 but their career didn't face any trouble.

Kuipers for example had 2 marks under 7.5. But he is still Elite.

      Delete
    10. Yes that Chelsea v PSG game in 2015, I remember... Other one I can't recall... By the way who ever claimed that a referee's career will be over after one mark below 7.5??? Even the most reliable of referees have one or two absolutely dreadful nights but they can't just be demoted for that and they never are... No one is a robot and occasionally they will get things wrong... There's no question of career being over or a demotion just because of one isolated poor performance!!

      Delete
    11. The first one was BVB - Arsenal. 2013.

      Delete
    12. Yes I remember now... We was sent to EL after that match and in the same season he whistled the Final also... So are you sure it was as low a mark as you're suggesting... I'm not talking about the blog's marking but rather the UEFA marking... Of course there were problems that's he went to EL but not as low as you suggest, I think!! Chelsea v PSG was a very, very poor night and he himself admitted that... The season rightly ended there!!

      Delete
    13. That 2013 season I remember both Rizzoli and Kuipers had problems in Real Sociedad v Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund v Arsenal respectively... Both were sent to EL for their 3rd group games - Rizzoli to Ludogorets v PSV Eindhoven and Kuipers to Dynamo Kyiv v Rapid Erin... And they did what they always do best and that is coming back with a bang! 😎

      Delete
    14. The blog's mark was higher than the observer's one for this match (BVB-Arsenal). There were 2 big incidents which were included on the next RAP.

So yes, I am absolutely sure about that mark.

      Delete
    15. 7,7 is for losing control and that is clearly not the case in Turin last night. @Soham I guess you were thinking of 7,8(2) :-).
Cakir around 8,5 IMO- his crucial decisions were solved as expected and surely acceptably, and overall he whistled an excellent match.
Kuipers in CHE-PSG was surely in 6,9-7,1 region also, a total disaster for the Dutch.

      Delete
    16. Yep in Chelsea v PSG, I remember there were many mistakes there - missed penalty, missed RC, controversial RC, everything just went wrong that day... He recalls it even today and acknowledges that it was one of the worst games of his career and says rightly that season ended there for him based on performance principle!!

Coming to Cakir it's 7.8 for me, I'm sorry the missed penalty is a crucial mistake for me irrespective of the scoreline!!

      Delete
    17. At least to my mind it's no black-white mistake, but in case of assigning a crucial mistake:
      8,3≤ - 7,9
      8,0/1/2 - 7,8

So absolutely not 7,8 for Çakir, unless you saw a different match to me :-)

      Delete
    18. There were missed YCs Mikael - at least two of them so that's a sure –0.1 in the very least... Then we can debate about the Dybala sending off whether it should be a straight red or 2nd YC... It's ultimately down to the interpretation of the individual observers :)

      Delete
  43. Second leg in Madrid: in my opinion committee has the big opportunty to appoint Mazic for a top clash which seems to be already decided, so this would even help the Serbian. I don't know whether they will do that, but I would make this choice.
Real Madrid - Juventus seems the perfect game now.

    1. I think Bayern v Sevilla needs someone like Mazic a lot more... We don't have a lot of options there!!

  44. But isn't Mazic a contender for the final? I feel like he will get the final. Or is there something in the way?

  45. No appointement for Turpin, Bastien and Buquet this weekend. I think we can expect some of them for the next european matches.

  46. Final remarks on Cakir, I confirm my positive impression, I watched more carefully the incidents in 32' and then the last one before the final whistle (Cuadrado).
About the situation in 32', Victor is right when he states that, according to LotG, it is penalty. However, one has also to consider the fact that these incidents are very difficult to assess live and very often they look to be not enough for a whistle. A penalty would have been a surprising decision by referee there, but not wrong. For this reason, I think that there are still some grey areas which are difficult to assess and to mark. Penalties on the paper, but not so much "in real time". Difficult to explain, but I think you get my point.
So, I wouldn't penalize Cakir too much, to be honest.
About the incident involving Cuadrado, in my opinion no penalty is OK. Player had already kicked the ball, some referees in these situations are more willing to whistle then other ones.
Regarding the second YC to Dybala, rewatched the incident, I agree with Cakir as well. No excessive force, player was not aware of the opponent, YC supportable, however straight RC wouldn't have been 100% wrong.
Therefore, final mark for me is something borderline 8.4 and 8.5 but not a full 8.5 as I stated yesterday.

    1. I think it's enough to get Cakir a UCL semi-final considering there aren't many other options!!

Penalty Cuadrado. Preety clear imo but Cakir turned around and whistled the end of game...

  47. I watched the incidents from Orsato game. Simulation is a good decision, or at least supportable. In any case, never a penalty there.
1-0 goal: it looks like the control by arm was clear. Arm was in natural position, but it is common practice when this leads to a goal, to whistle. I think he missed the touch, otherwise he would have whistled.

    1. The AAR should have spotted that (?)

    2. Orsato was overall okay IMO, he struggled a little to find a clear line and there were some other points for improvement, but his prevention was quite impressive, and he was without huge problems in this quite challenging match. 1-0 is the mistake of AAR2 Damato (who I always thought one of the best AARs in UEFA), but maybe one can call it an acceptable decision.
      8,2 would be my mark.

  49. First group referee Tobias Welz is returning to Bundesliga on Friday after a long injury break since October 2016.
Furthermore Zwayer is refereeing in the 2nd division on Friday with Schiffner and Achmüller, what might indicate an international appointment next week (or is unrelated...)

  50. Fuck You ref that did Liverpool vs Roma 1st leg, a penalty on a shot that hit the arm rather that the arm moved to block the shot, Milner’s arm was in a natural position, u are and have been a total disgrace to reffing soccer, go back to your piece of shit day job keeping criminals out of jail and leave the worlds most popular sport to someone who is “honest and fair”
