  1. I wasn't expecting Makkelie in a QF but incredible progress for him and deserved... And I think Brych is now getting overappointed... Appointments can be spread out better than this!!

  2. My first thought is that we wont see Kuipers in Champions League, otherwise he would have been appointed. Maybe in Europa League, but still I'm not really sure... it is possible that he will be kept directly for World Cup now.
About Brych, yesterday there was a comment about Italian officials pushed by Collina, today one could say the same with Brych, but of course it is a different speech.
It seems as this season in this KO stage committee is appointed a very small set of referees, always the same names. In a certain extent, in my opinion, this is not a good signal because it also means that there isn't a so big choice, but at the same time all the appointed officials are showing excellent performances.
Very good, really very good for Makkelie, who in the same year of his CL KO debut, got a second game, a quarterfinal involving Barcelona. For sure, the match on the paper is absolutely OK for him.
Nice to see Brych again, he deserved that as well.

    1. I've a feeling that Mateu Lahoz won't appear in UCL this year anymore... Manchester City v Liverpool 2nd leg will go to Rocchi I think... Other 3 games for Mazic, Turpin and Skomina??

  3. I almost hit it. 😂 (Kuipers and Brych my choices)

    1. We will give 50% marks for the Kuipers one as Makkelie is also Dutch 😂

      Delete
    2. Well, I deserve half the mark just because he's of the same nationality as the Kuipers. 😂

I did not expect Makkelie's appointment. A surprise for me.

      Delete
    3. Surprising for me too... There are a lot of contributing factors in it like Marciniak's omission, Kuipers' injury, Karasev being out of favour and so on... But Makkelie's development this season has been really good!!

      Delete
    4. Yes, Kuipers injury and Marciniak bad performance are two of the main reasons... but indeed the pool of reliable officials is not so wide.

      Delete
    5. Chefren, why do you think they're holding back Kuipers even now?? It has been one month he's completely fit and back to whistling matches at the Eredivisie... Then he cleared a rigorous fitness test for the World Cup selections... Even after all that what is the logic of not letting him whistle European games before the World Cup?? Prevention from further injury?? Either way I find it really strange!!

      Delete
    6. It can be indeed for prevention. I don't see other reasons, however the same should be for domestic games...

      Delete
    7. He is doing Eredivisie games every week since March except the week he was in the seminar so definitely it's not the problem... I think he will appear in at least Europa League because that can serve as preparation for World Cup!!

    8. @Soham

      Everything you said is true.

Makkelie has been doing well this season. It's a surprise, it deserves the appointment.

    1. Uno Tutk is indeed important observer, but I expected commitee member for Makkelie.

      Delete
    2. He won't get any final so I think Tutk is a big enough observer for this game!!

      Delete
    3. Well I would not exclude him out of EL final. Velasco was appointed to EL final in his first season as elite. In case of good performance in Barcelona I would surley take Makkelie in consideration for EL final.

      Delete
    4. I don't think he's ready for a final yet... There are many candidates ahead of him... I'm sure Committee won't make him lose motivation by giving Finals way too early!!

      Delete
    5. I dont think whistling a EL final would be a reason for losing motivation for Makkelie, just opposite I think it would be a great motivation for him to achieve more, because it would show that committee trust him. He has Champions League final, EURO, World Cup, ahead of him so I dont think he would lose a motivation. Moreover, at the moment you have only few referees who have full trust by commitee which is shown by appointments in CL, always the same names.... They have to find fresh, young referees who they can trust, and Makkelie is obviously one of them.

      Delete
    6. In that case Marciniak would've had the EL final by now... Obviously Committee has learnt the lessons from Kassai and Clattenburg scenarios... For Makkelie definitely too early... Rocchi, Mazic, Mateu Lahoz, Marciniak, Turpin all are yet to do an EL final and all are ahead of Makkelie in the pecking order IMO!!

      Delete
    7. Makkelie as Fourth Official would be a good solution IMO, but I tend to think it will be WC referees in Lyon and Kyiv.

      Delete
    8. Not always. For example Fandel and Hauge in previous years, who were not selected, but still got the final.

I'd like Makkelie as 4th official btw.

  5. Your analysis of the Mateu Lahoz situation?? @Chefren

    1. Let's wait for English derby second leg, I still think he will be there. Having already officiated two Europa League games, this would be a more than good path for the Spanish.
We can't make any judgment before reading this appointment.
Rocchi can be kept directly for a semifinal!

      Delete
    2. Keeping Rocchi for a direct SF makes good sense!!

      Delete
  6. There are two referees that have had the confidence of the committee so far this season who have not been yet appointed for a CL match in KO stage (if I'm not wrong) and have not made significant mistakes in UEFA competitions this year: Milorad Mazic and Mateu Lahoz.

I find really hard to believe that they are being left out due to performances. We also know that they are not injured. Why could it be? I expect them both for second legs. Otherwise, there might be something more we don't know (i.e. crucial mistakes in their matches). So, my predictions for second legs without knowing first-leg results:

Real Madrid - Juventus: Damir Skomina
    Bayern - Sevilla: Clément Turpin
AS Roma - FC Barcelona: Milorad Mazic
Manchester City - Liverpool: Mateu Lahoz

I predict Mazic in a, in paper, low-profile game as I think he is a candidate for CL final, so to keep his chances.

    1. I think Mazic will get UEL like he did last year then to be candidate for CL final..

    3. Ye, last year he got 1 app in R16 then one UEL if im right?

    4. Yes and after the match in Istanbul he didn't appear any further in Europe for that season!!

    8. I cannot imagine that happening to be honest... Is it European game or is he heading to Saudi Arabia maybe for their games?? I really don't think Real Madrid v Juventus is for Zwayer!!

  7. Matéu Lahoz is one irregular referee,
    sometimes capricious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I remember reading a play by Shakespeare in school that was in my syllabus named "As You Like It" where we were taught that capricious roughly means goat-like... Do you mean to say something like Mateu is the G.O.A.T.– Greatest of All Time?? 🤔🤔

      Delete
    2. What always amazes me is that people from Spain write "Matéu" with an accent, when it doesn't have one: it is a valencian/catalan surname and it must not have it. I mean, it takes (a very short) bit longer to put the accent and it is even wrong to do so.

      Delete
    3. What about Abrahám Álvarez Cantón as RFEF-CTA spell this name. Is the accent in "Abrahám" correct?

      Delete
    4. It is not, according to general spanish rules. Of course, if the person in question wants to have their name accentuated, it is up to them (which I don't know if it is the case of Álvarez Cantón or is just a mistake on their part).

    6. This is one lengthy joke :D And we're really having fun :D

      Delete
    7. why lazio doesn't love collum?

      Delete
    8. 5 years ago, April 2013, in Europa League there was Fenerbahçe - Lazio, a quarterfinal officiated by Collum.
After the match, Italian team made heavy protests against UEFA, following some decisions taken by the Scottish crew. Now, I don't remember all the incidents exactly, but I remember that it was more than discussed and there was a big astonishment.

      Delete
    9. After all these years I think they've forgiven Collum??

      Delete
    10. Difficult, in addition this season in serie A the team is angry against referees for several decisions, and Rizzoli is a bit in trouble in making appointments. He has been forced to some choices, like to appoint the same referee (Banti) twice in a row for two top games, both Napoli - Lazio and Lazio - Juventus. It would be a too long speech in any case, I don't want to bother readers :)

      Delete
    11. Collum was excellent in FEN-LAZ (8,6) it is the best I have ever seen him.
But three crucial decisions were (correctly) assessed against Lazio, who lodged a complaint and there were Lazio ‘fans’ waiting to find the Scottish team at the stadium after the match etc.
So it would be wise to keep the two apart IMO.

    12. You can share the info with via email if you think writing here will bother the readers :) I love to hear all these long speech about refereeing scenarios in various countries!!

  9. Serbian derby between Crvena Zvezda - Partizan is next wednesday so i dont expect Mazic in UCL. I think he or Grujic will get this match..

    1. Oh, they changed it to saturday because Mazic and Jovanovic teams got match on tuesday or wednesday..
They said 2 our best referee teams got match on that 2 days so we can expect them in UCL/UEL?

      Delete
    2. BTW more than interesting to read that some federations are even ready to postpone games just because a specific referee is not available in that day. Surely, Italy would never do something like that... I have a question, is it impossible to see a different name for Partizan - Crvena Zvezda apart from Mazic, Grujic or Jovanovic? At least once...

      Delete
    3. I dont think so. Jovanovic never had derby match.. Mazic and Grujic are 2 best refs, Jovanovic is getting experiance and rest are not even close to them.. Our federation tried 2 times with changes but both referees made crucial mistakes. Maybe we'll see Jovanovic for the first time but i think Mazic or Grujic will get it again..

      Delete
    4. Also it will be first match of play-off, 6 points between them and will be very important match and hot atmosphere

      Delete
    5. Mazic never a crucial mistake in the Eternal Derby? :)
I think it is just a question of acceptance by fans, a different choice wouldn't be expected, so federation appoints always the same referees... right?

      Delete
    6. In the past 2-3 years he had only 1 crucial mistake if im right..
Ye, if they appoint some other referee fans will be like they are Crvena Zvezda or Partizan fans.. I want to see other referee like Jovanovic to get that match but with politics and too much presure if they make big mistake is so disgusting in our country..

      Delete
    7. Indeed, that's not good for developing new referees.
The derby is "Eternal" but not the referees. :)
I hope that something can change in Serbia.
What about Djokic and Nicolic, both FIFA referees?

      Delete
    8. Djokic can get it too but i dont think he got that much trust..
Nikolic dont have enuff experiance and he got injury in his last match on saturday so i dont know how much he'll be off..

What time is Belgrade's Derby scheduled to kick off on Saturday?

      Delete
    14. Google is still showing Wednesday :(

      Delete
    15. For me, Serbian no. 2 referee is Jovanovic. Whenever I was watching him, he was very good and have good personality on the pitch. He is very young, only 31, and I expect him to be real Mazic's successor. He should get next Eternal Derby, but not this one - this one can decide the championship winner. So, Mazic is only solution - the pressure from the fans, from the journals (and I believe from the Federation!!!) is enormous on the ref days before the match.
Grujic had 2 Derbies so far (if I am not wrong). Problem with him is that he declared himself as Partizan fan, but what is more interesting is that in his 1st Derby he whistled penalty in favor of Crvena zvezda, and he was wrong :-).
Majo Vujovic did good in his only appearance, but in that match Zvezda scored goal after the ball was out. Not his mistake - his AR1 and AAR1 signaled nothing, but Partizan fans accused him (there is belief that Majo Vujovic from time to time whistle in favor of Zvezda).
Bojan Nikolic? Just watch his last match Radnicki-Vojvodina - he destroyed the guests. Why is he on the list? Well, you can imagine why...

  10. Reports in Spain state that the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Sevilla will be handled by Alberto Undiano Mallenco.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'll be immensely satisfied with such an appointment!!

      Delete
    2. Things are getting strange: the media now report that he will be the referee if and only if he retires at the end of the season and becomes president of CTA. If he declines, Gil Manzano would be the referee. I repeat: that is what media are reporting right now. It is (of course) not official.

      Delete
    3. If that's true that's really regrettable... Sorry state of affairs all around!!

      Delete

    4. Simple rumour. Gil Manzano is my favourite.

      Delete
    5. A question about Spain, is Alejandro José Hernández Hernández injured? I don't read his name in recent times...

      Delete
    6. His last La Liga game was on 04/03...

      Delete
    7. He was appointed for a game this past weekend but he was replaced because of "impossibility to travel". Also his AR1, Teodoro Sobrino Magán, because of personal problems.

About if it is a rumour, well... it comes from a journalist which is very close to the referees, and it is not really hard to believe: CTA sometimes gives the Cup final to an international referee who is retiring and is good, so if it is going to be Undiano's last year, it is likely he will handle it and Gil Manzano will do so next year. On the other hand, if it is not, Gil Manzano could handle it this year and Undiano the next one. What I did not like at all was the wording used by the press, which sounded to me like they were pressing Undiano to accept the presidency. It is a hard time for RFEF: last year, Villar was removed and imprisoned because of alleged corruption. Next Monday there will be an election for the new president with at least two candidates. Both of them want to renew CTA as the current president (Sánchez Arminio) has been there forever with Villar's support, so they need to send a message of renovation. That's why the current acting president would want Alberto Undiano Mallenco (the referee with most matches in LaLiga ever) to replace Sánchez Arminio, always according to the media.

    1. Free kick is indeed wrong, you can see in a replay that AR talks to referee, so very likely he suggested the decision.
42': correct penalty decision, defender took a risk with the arm in that position.
65': clearly not a penalty there, arm close to body, natural position.
75': supportable decision to play on, one wants to see more to whistle a penalty.
      55': correct YC
83': definitely an excellent advantage there, for sure at first it was difficult to guess a very promising attack, so referee must be praised.

      Delete
    2. Re 83' - but the player who recklessly attacks an opponent's head was already on the book, so technically the advantage shouldn't have been played, also finally the 2nd YC was not issued

Do all Serie A fixtures this midweek have the same referees as designated before the (tragic) postponement?
At least, Di Bello will whistle Milan's Derby like it was planned before.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, Di Bello is the only referee confirmed. All the rest has changed for several reasons.
      http://aia-figc.it/dettaglio.asp?ID=15044
Some referees were appointed again but there was just a change of match for them, for example Pasqua originally planned for Genoa - Cagliari, will now officiate Atalanta - Sampdoria because meanwhile he had been appointed for Napoli - Genoa a few weeks ago. The same for Tagliavento who was assigned to Atalanta - Sampdoria but then he was appointed for Sampdoria - Inter. About Udinese - Fiorentina, a serie B referee was originally appointed, La Penna, now Banti has replaced him. La Penna got a different game in serie A as well on last Sunday, Cagliari - Torino. Now Udinese - Fiorentina is a bit more challenging to officiate, you surely know what happened before this game and Fiorentina players are still touched.
For Torino - Crotone Gavillucci was originally appointed but also in this case he got the same team a few weeks after (Torino - Fiorentina), so now he has been changed and replaced by Guida. The latter was planned for Chievo - Sassuolo and now Tagliavento will be there.
Of course Di Bello has been kept because it is a different appointment from all the other ones, for the new FIFA referee it is indeed the appointment of the season, but I would even dare to say, the appointment of his career so far. The most important game. If Rizzoli had changed his game, it would have been a very act of distrust in his regards, it was not possible for the human management, indeed Rizzoli clearly understood that.

      Delete
    2. Rizzoli is one good administrator :D

    3. Agreed with Soham :-)
I have to be honest, Wednesday with the Milan and British Derbies consecutively looks very exciting :-D

    4. Milan derby is now merely a shadow of what it used to be in the past... That's why Rizzoli could give it to Di Bello... I will be watching the English derby that day and will observe one German referee from Munich :D

    3. @Chefren Can Rocchi get the 2nd leg Bayern v Sevilla??

      Delete
    4. It seems as everything is possible for Collina, but I don't expect again an Italian officiating team for the same game.

      Delete
    5. I checked if there was a case of a referee officiating "only" a round of 16 match and then directly a final (without Europa league knockout appearances). Well, it seems there was if my info is correct - Rizzoli 2013?

      Delete
    6. Without EL KO it's only Rizzoli otherwise we do have Kuipers and Cakir doing the same... Skomina may follow in Rizzoli's way... He had a good Barca v Chelsea and maybe Committee will choose to give him the direct ticket to Final and he will be protected now... Moreover 3 of the 4 QF ties are more than decided in the 1st leg itself so no worries!!

      Delete
    7. @Chefren If Rocchi can't do Bayern v Sevilla, then he will have any one of Mateu or Rocchi, Mazic, Turpin and whom?? Will they appoint Kuipers?? Or will they give another 2nd leg appoint Brych?? :D

    7. Not the best angle from this view. But simply impossible for refs team to be sure here. Supportable call for a quite good Makkelie.

    8. From that view it's clearly outside.

    2. AR not in line with second-last defender...

      Delete
    3. This might spoil Brych's SF chances like it happened with Marciniak last year!!

      Delete
    4. Agreed. However, I think we can‘t be sure that the offside position was detected in case of an adequate positioning either. I rather doubt it.

      Delete
    5. Brych with an easy game without any problems! Offside for sure, not easy but Borsch was not in line...
for SF i think Brych is out... Not because of this situation but he whistled Real, Barcelona and Liverpool in KO-Stage - Bayern is not possible so which game would be suitable? Not any one

      Delete
    6. @Pat Rick good point. That's can be a reason for which he has been already appointed to 3 games. Very likely this is the last one in any case.

      Delete
    7. Agree Ref but quite unacceptable lack of concentration by AR1 in this case. Huge technical error from German assessor in this type of situation.

      Delete
    8. Sorry he did not whistle barca so gar so there is a small Chance for barca - sevilla if Bayern get‘s out... and then the only Chance is That game

      Delete
    9. Brych hasn't whistled a Barcelona game in this season... Plus last year Kuipers whistled Juventus thrice out of which two were KO matches in consecutive rounds - QF and SF... So in case of an El Classico one can more than expect Brych although personally I feel Cakir and Kuipers will be the best names for such a game!!

      Delete
    10. Yes soham my mistake... look at my last comment

Possible yes but i don‘t think so... and if bayern is in the other game only first leg is possible... for me last Match this season for Brych

      Delete
    11. Yep I want the same too... I want to see Rocchi, Mazic, Kuipers and Cakir in the semis!!

      Delete
    12. How do you expect an AR to make the correct decision when he is unable to be in the correct position? Your perception is changed greatly if your positioning is off by just a small margin. And that was the case in this situation.

Many want to excuse the AR by using phrases such as, "it's impossible to spot", "human error". I'd buy those excuses if the AR was in the correct position. But he wasn't. So out the window go the excuses.

      Delete
    13. @ Sheriff C - fully agree with your statement but, wrong positioning like this one should have led to raising the flag, right? I guess the AR was not sure about the right call so he did the right thing and kept the flag down.
Btw, I am sure, if the AR was positioned well he would have seen the offside and make the right call, especially because the whole action and player movement (Sallah running towards the center line) smelled likeoffside.

  22. Makkelie performance was overall expected level, second half was not challenging. Big discussion can be about the possible penalty in first half and then the foul inside or outside the box.

    4. @Chefren Is there some sarcasm intended? :D Whatever Marco Rodriguez writes it's all very confused stuff and once I wrote to him to clear my confusion and he ended up confusing me even more with his reply :D

So Chiquimarco is one referee confused :D :D
Hopefully Sheriff Castrilli and Nando Vasquez won't kill me :D

  23. Mistake by AR1 in Liverpool ManCity. He flagged for offsides so the 3-1 is cancelled but it wasn’t offside for Sane. Crucial mistake.

    3. In my opinion more ONSIDE than OFFSIDE, but really hard to detect. In any case, the most natural decision there would be flag down.

      Delete
    4. In my view the upper body is slightly ahead. Therefore offside looks fine to me.

      Delete
    5. Do you think VAR would have spotted these? I‘m not sure...

    6. In any case the close debate suggests Borsch's decision was acceptable. Many borderline calls tonight by both assistants.

Good performance by Brych, firmly in the background, using his experience and good disciplinary control.

      If I may 'steal' @Soham's (excellent) predictions ;-) :
      Roma Barcelona Turpin
      Man City Liverpool Rocchi/Mateu
      Bayern Sevilla Mazic
      Real Juventus Kuipers

      Delete
    7. Now after the 1st leg to tend towards Mateu more than Rocchi for the English derby 2nd leg... Rocchi directly to a Semi-final then?

      Delete
    8. My thoughts exactly :-)
Considering there will almost certainly be (at least) two Spanish teams advancing, it is almost mandatory Mateu is in Manchester.

    9. Very bad Manchester City. Not well Brych.
      Great mistake of AR1.

  24. After first leg scores, I think that the job for referees on next week in some cases will be definitely easier. This surely will help committee in a way, bit I also think that original choices will be confirmed. We can expect for sure Turpin, Mazic, Mateu and maybe Kuipers...

    3. Sterling was kicking into the direction of Henderson (without chance of hitting him) after Henderson's foul - a bit similar to CR7 against PSG. Strictly speaking VC, but not with the current interpretation. YC would have been better though.

    1. I do not foresee this game going well for Irmatov.

    2. The fiery and provocative approach by both teams going into the 1st Leg. The melee/skirmish at half time. Club America coaches accusing Toronto PD of physically assaulting their players during said melee/skirmish. These things in themselves makes the 2nd Leg that much more difficult for the referee crew.

Now add in the Azteca effect and Irmatov's limited exposure to the Latin American style/intricacies.

Yeah things do not bode well for the Uzbek. I wish him the best. But I have a feeling the Azteca is going claim another victim.

The other semi-final in safe hands with Walter Lopez (GUA).

The 1st Legs were handled well by Henry Bejarano (Toronto FC vs Club America). World Cup chosen Ricardo Montero was the 4th Official. Following CONCACAF competitions and the referee's. This is how I view Costa Rican referee's. Bejarano as their #1 and Montero as their #2. So Busacca chose a second option for the World Cup.

World Cup chosen Jhon Pitti(PAN) did an excellent job in the other semi-final 1st Leg (Chivas vs NY Red Bulls). He correctly sent off Aurélien Collin(Red Bulls) with two more than deserved cautions in the 44th and 73rd minute. Collin's cautions were a result of his overly physical/dirty playing style. A style that is allowed and condoned by referee's in Major League Soccer.

      Delete
    3. Wait. You are usually VERY critical about referees who under-punish misconduct.

Bejarano gave Giovinco a yellow card after Giovinco kicked a prone player on the ground (15').

And Bejarano gave Osorio a yellow card after a textbook red card SFP tackle (30').

How do you justify lauding Bejarano when you would have raked a European referee over the coals for giving yellow cards in those two situations?

      Delete
    4. You view Giovinco's play as Violent Conduct? Was there really that much there? A nudge? Sure. A kick? Never. So yeah, the yellow was correct.

About Osorio's incident, I was and am quite torn on it. While yes, it's looks terribly bad. I think Osorio was unlucky to have his foot ride the top of the ball. I firmly believe that Bejarano took this and the field conditions into consideration. And he decided on yellow.

      Delete
    5. Atkinson had the very same play in the Manchester Derby. Ashley Young tackled Kun Aguero in the same manner which should have resulted in a PK. But unlike the good Bejarano, Atkinson didn't even whistle a foul. It was a very EPL type referee blunder. Which is the path that Peter "Million Excuses" Walton is leading MLS referee's.
