  1. Doubthful if Schüttengruber deserved an appointment so soon, the reward` could be for the future.

    1. Why do you think that it's too early for Manuel Schüttengruber? He has been an international referee for 4 1/2 years now and the home team is the lowest ranked out of all - on paper, he got the least attractive match.

    2. Based on the last game performance, but that game maybe was planned a long time ago.

  4. And what I observed is that the assistant ref will follow the in manner at which the assistant ref did at the world cup... the very late flag until the attacking play is gone

  5. Sorry for such emotional post, but...

Outrageous refereeing in German Supercup today. Missed penalty, Hummels only booked for clearest DOGSO you'll see and Abraham only booked for SFP (arm clearly used as a weapon). What is Dankert doing behind the monitor?!!!!

    1. Waiting for some videos... I watched only screenshots of the DOGSO situation, only reason for which one can think to back referee is the presence of the other defender, but he is clearly behind and without any chance to intervene. It would be interesting to have some explanations about this choice...

    2. I am already making the clips, they will be online soon.

    3. So, there we are.

27' - missing penalty for Bayern (no VAR review)
      https://streamable.com/j0wxa

45' - missing RC for Hummels for DOGSO (no VAR review)
      https://streamable.com/dyx1a

70' - missing RC for violent conduct (no VAR review)
      https://streamable.com/rzuqo

Vlad is perfectly right, Fritz' performance was simply poor and German VAR continues just like last season: super clear mistakes, but no intervention at all...

      Delete
    4. For me also two clear RCs.
In the DOGSO the other defender is no factor IMO. The only thing is, that one might discuss, whether the ball is played too far by the striker before the foul - but I think, no.

      Delete
    5. About the penalty, I am not completely sure. Looks like a foul, but from the perspective in the clip, the amount of contact is not totally clear to me.

      Delete
    6. Well, one can close the eyes about the penalty, indeed maybe not 100% clear, or not an obvious mistake to be analyzed by VAR, but both red cards... impossible to back referee there.
Deliberate violent conduct (the player is absolutely aware that opponent is there, before hitting him) and the DOGSO is clear as well.

    7. I beg to disagree with some points ;-)

27' no penalty for me. Just look at Lewandowski. He stops walking trying to get hit by the defender. We cannot expect that the defender stops moving towards the ball, too. No foul for me, but definitely no clear and obvious mistake.

45' DOGSO and RC. This one is clear. You cannot come to a different choice. An OFR should have been recommended.

70' YC is supportable. IMO neither excessive force was used nor one can speak of "using the elbow as a weapon". It was borderline, but not a clear and obvious mistake for me. Another point against an OFR could be that Fritz was fully aware of the incident and in a perfect position to evaluate the severity of the usage.

Dankert can be blamed for not recommending an OFR in 45'. Fritz was hesitating after the foul whistle and decided to award a YC. I think he would have changed his decision after a review.

    8. Statements by DFB / Lutz Fröhlich:
@45: The attacker is five meters before the penalty area with the ball at his foot and has a free way to the Munich goal. It is a clear foul. Hummels is the last defender. The other defenders clearly don't have a chance to intervene. Therefore it is a clear GSO. The correct decision would have been a RC. If the referee only issues a YC in such a clear situation, the VAR should tell the referee, that the pictures indicate a RC. The referee is expected to review the situation and then take a decision, which correctly would be a RC.

@70: It is an interpretation of a duel. It is a air duel, where Abraham uses his arm for a striking movement - hard and in the border area. The referee shows the YC, because the countermovement/backswing was not extensive [probably meaning the arm did not come from far away]. The VAR doesn't intervene here, when the referee evaluated the situation himself based on a conclusive perception. If the referee shows a RC here, the VAR also doesn't intervene.

I think, it's good, that they declared the DOGSO situation as clear error. So we know, what to expect now, if a similar situation occurs again - and that it is not some strange application of the LotG / the VAR protocol, but simply two mistakes.
I am not convinced by the explanation, why a YC is supportable, however I can understand the reasons, why the VAR did not need to intervene here. If the pictures show, what the referee already saw, a review would probably change nothing.

      Delete
    9. To be clear: The last paragraph is my opinion, the two first are my translation of Fröhlich's statements (slightly shortened).

  6. First intervention by VAR in Spain, goal by Sevilla had been disallowed by AR, attacker was in regular position. Well solved... this would have been already the first significant mistake of the season in Spain, because this goal by Sevilla will be very important.

No special UEFA CL kit this season, referees will wear the standardad 2018 ADIDAS kit.

  11. ARSENAL FC - MANCHESTER CITY (Michael Oliver)

Two good advantages given, one of them resulting in a delayed YC

    - Cautions for SPA
    => https://streamable.com/np6ku
    => https://streamable.com/1ntuo

Penalty appeal 1: after a corner kick, Arsenal keeper Cech managed to touch the ball which rebounds to Aymeric Laporte, who is caught by the keeper. What is interesting here is whether the ball was outside or inside the field of play at the moment of the contact (if it's inside, this could be a penalty). I think the incident was missed by Oliver, he had no chance to spot this. I think, this would be stuff for VAR.
    => https://streamable.com/dv8jk

Penalty appeal 2: after a corner, Mustafi is being held by Mendy inside the penalty area, with Mustafi going down and claiming for a penalty, whereas Oliver decided to play on.

YC for de Bruyne: reckless tackle or SFP?

Two goals by Arsenal correctly disallowed for offside by AR2

    1. Thanks, very interesting videos.
About the crucial incidents: in my opinion penalty appeal #1 can be penalty if ball is still in play of corse, but at the same time I wouldn't be so sure about the need to assign it. In any case, there wasn't any chance for the attacker to play the ball. It stays as penalty on paper, but in reality... difficult to accept, and also impossible to be detected live.
Penalty appeal 2: many doubts, even after having watched several times replays, about how mich effect had that holding. I'm not sure, maybe attacker exaggerated the contact and he fell down easily. In any case, without making such deep analysis, a penalty decision should have been accepted.

YC de Bruyne: reckless, YC is OK. The classic reckless challenge by stepping on opponent's foot. Nothing more for me.

Good job about the rest by Oliver and assistant referees.

      Delete
    2. Penalty appeal #2 would surely be a VAR review. It's basically a clothesline like in wrestling! And the defender is not looking at the ball - I'm sure there was a penalty awarded for that reason last season (Mike Dean?).

    1. I think we could see Oliver in a CL playoff and therefore in case of need, his appointment for Crystal Palace - Liverpool on Monday would be changed. I think appointments for play off are not still made because teams have still to qualify. For sure this beginning of season is very particular if compared to the recent ones, so many games and we are still on August.
If this appointment for Premier League wil be confirmed, then I think we will see Oliver in a CL PLay off second leg.

  14. Interview with Lutz Michael Fröhlich about the crucial decisions in German Super Cup:
    - There were two much-discussed incidents in the game Eintracht Frankfurt-Bayern München in which the VAR did not intervene. In 45', it was Mats Hummels who tripped up his opponent, Mijat Gacinovic. Wasn't that an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and therefore worth a RC? Shouldn't the VAR have intervened?
"Yes, and it is good to have incidents like this before the start of the new season. Thus we can state once again when there has to be an intervention and which conditions have to be fulfilled for that. In this incident we have to evaluate the attacker's position towards the goal. Was that a goal-scoring opportunity? Gacinovic is at an inside left attacking position five meters before the penalty area. He has got the ball close to his feet and is on the (vacant) way to the opponent's goal. Mats Hummels is too late, doesn't catch the ball and trips up Gacinovic. That's a clear foul. In addition, Mats Hummels commits the foul as Munich's last defender. Three more players from Munich obviously have no chance to interfere, so obvious that we have to speak of a clear goal-scoring opportunity. The correct decision was a sent-off for Mats Hummels. If the referee only shows a YC, considering the clear circumstances, the VAR has to tell the referee that the images speak in favour of a RC. In that case, we expect the referee to rewatch the monitor in order to come to the correct decision, which would be a RC. We need clear procedures and correct decisions in all relevant incidents. Indeed, the best scenario is a correct decision by the referee on the pitch without any need to get help by the VAR."

    - In 70' David Abraham banged his left underarm into Lewandowski's face. Was that worth a RC?
"Now we have an interpretation of a duel. It's an aerial duel in which Abraham uses his left arm in a severe manner and borderline to a hit movement against Lewandowski. As the hit movement was done in a not so extensive way, the referee showed Abraham a YC. The VAR does not intervene if the referee evaluated the incident for himself on a basis of a comprehensible perception. If the referee shows a RC, the VAR does not intervene, too."

So, as I expected, the only clear mistake was the missed RC for DOGSO. I support this evaluation by Fröhlich.

  15. After seeing the predictions in the Guess the Ref game for LaLiga, I would like to provide some tips for the participants regarding appointment rules.

In Spain, we have 17 autonomous communities (like states), and each one has its local CTA (refereeing association). Appointment rules state that a referee from a given local association (which does not have to be the one in which the referee was born, as Cuadra Fernández was born in Madrid but is from the Balearic CTA) cannot referee a team from the same autonomous community. So I will leave here a list of the communities and their teams and referees.

    Andalucía
    - Referees: Mario Melero López, José Luis Munuera Montero.
    - Teams: Sevilla, Betis.

    Aragón
    - Referee: Santiago Jaime Latre
    - Team: Huesca

    Canarias
    - Referee: Alejandro José Hernández Hernández

    Cantabria
    - Referee: Adrián Cordero Vega

    Castilla y León:
    - Referee: José Luis González González
    - Team: Valladolid

    Castilla - La Mancha
    - Referee: Javier Alberola Rojas

    Cataluña
    - Referees: Xavier Estrada Fernández, David Medié Jiménez
    - Teams: Barcelona, Espanyol, Girona

    Madrid
    - Referee: Carlos del Cerro Grande
    - Teams: Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Leganés, Getafe, Rayo Vallecano

    Navarra
    - Referees: Alberto Undiano Mallenco, Eduardo Prieto Iglesias

    Comunidad Valenciana
    - Referees: Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz, Juan Martínez Munuera
    - Teams: Levante, Valencia, Villarreal

    Extremadura
    - Referee: Jesús Gil Manzano

    Galicia
    - Referee: Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva
    - Team: Celta de Vigo

    Islas Baleares
    - Referee: Guillermo Cuadra Fernández

    País Vasco
    - Referee: Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea
    - Teams: Alavés, Athletic Club, Eibar, Real Sociedad.

    Asturias
    - Referee: Pablo González Fuertes

    Murcia
    - Referee: José María Sánchez Martínez

So maybe this information could be included in the predictions page to have it at hand.

    1. The same counts for Germany. We have 21 football associations which are not the same as our Bundesländer. For example, Baden-Württemberg indeed has 3 football associations.

      Baden:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: TSG Hoffenheim

      Bayern (Bavaria):
      - Referees: Deniz Aytekin, Benjamin Brand, Felix Brych, Benjamin Cortus, Robert Hartmann
      - Teams: FC Bayern München, FC Augsburg, 1. FC Nürnberg

      Hessen:

      - Team: None

      Mittelrhein:

      - Team: Bayer 04 Leverkusen

      Niederrhein:
      - Referee: Guido Winkmann
      - Teams: Borussia Mönchengladbach, Fortuna Düsseldorf

      Niedersachsen:
      - Referees: Harm Osmers, Robert Schröder, Bibiana Steinhaus, Frank Willenborg
      - Teams: VfL Wolfsburg, Hannover 96

      Rheinland:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: None

      Saarland:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: None

      Sachsen:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: RB Leipzig

      Sachsen-Anhalt:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: None

      Schleswig-Holstein:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: None

      Südbaden:
      - Referee: Daniel Schlager
      - Team: SC Freiburg

      Südwest:
      - Referee: Christian Dingert
      - Team: 1. FSV Mainz 05

      Thüringen:
      - Referee: None
      - Team: None

      Westfalen:
      - Referee: Sören Storks
      - Teams: Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04

      Württemberg:
      - Referees: Marco Fritz, Robert Kampka, Martin Petersen, Markus Schmidt
      - Team: VfB Stuttgart

We have only two referees who could possibly get all the 18 teams, Dankert and Ittrich. If you make your predictions, you also have to mention that, for example, Stieler, who is a Referee for Hessen lives in Hamburg. As i mentioned above, Baden-Württemberg is split into three associations (Baden, Württemberg and Südbaden). The same counts for Nordrhein-Westfalen, which is split into Westfalen, Niederrhein and Mittelrhein and for Rheinland-Pfalz, which is split into Rheinland and Südwest. So, for example, Winkmann may get a game at Schalke, which happened last season, or Schmidt in Hoffenheim. So, its a bit tricky to predict the german appointments.

      Delete
    2. Stieler is not the best example, but Kampka. He lives in Mainz but is a Referee for Württemberg, he won´t get any Mainz games.

No official confirmation that he was injured but when he was back this year he had running shoes instead of football shoes in the beginning of the season. Maybe it was an old problem he’s had with his achilles tendon, wich has made him miss 1 or 2 seasons earlier in his carrear

    3. Very surprising news, a shame for English refereeing.

Bobby Madley was not a very 'English' referee, top-down authority rather than co-operative (of course relatively, it is prerequisite that PL referees must be good match managers). I think his style would have been excellent for UEFA competition (he wouldn't have had to 'adjust' like some others), and as Vlad said I saw him with a big potential in Europe. Indeed the last match he ever refereed, PAOK - Basel, suggests there were bigger plans for him.

Also, together with East failing the fitness test (he is a good referee on his day, but 53 years old!!), there is only eighteen referees in PL. Names like, Brookes, Bankes, England, A Madley, Martin, Toner, I hope can be promoted in the next years.
I missed Rob Jones on the list, I think he is a special case, I got to watch him live on the stadium recently, and he can be the big future of refereeing here in England.
The best way to describe his style is "an English Pitana", I would really remember his name for the future.

Good luck to Mr Madley wherever life takes him!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was interested in how Ivaylo Stoyanov will handle the game with a favoured team that have lost the first leg 1-2 at their own stadium. To be fair, he is able to reach the First Group although he is 37 yo already. Very firm body language, trying to stay in the background as long as possible (paid for that with missed mandatory YC for blatant holding; not a SPA but UEFA clearly instruct referees to caution players for lack of respect in such cases).

Three Legia's penalty appeals. In 30' there was a clear trip but the fouled player was positioned back to the goal and his teammate was about to give a shot on goal at the moment of foul. Common sense won with the LoTG once again. Then, two handballs in second half, first of them being fully undeliberate (stuck to the chest) but the second one was more tricky. Dudelange player jumped for the ball, didn't reached that and he was shot in slightly outstretched hand while landing onto the ground. Undeliberate for me and good YC for dissent shortly afterward.

Fourth official following play all the time was nice to see and it immediately recalled me Pedro Proença's fourth official some years ago!

    Good, expected level. Well done!

    5. 29:33 absolutely excellent call by AR1, no matter whether the attacker in offside touched the ball or not, he tried to play it in front of keeper, in clear offside position, that's enough, this goal could have changed the outcome of the game. AR1 must be praised.

57:35 looks like a very paticular situation, in my opinion impossible to detect for referee. The last replay is clear: player from Zenit kicked the ball and then he was hit by opponent. But everything happened in a while and at first glance I had the impression that attacker had made the foul by putting his leg... referee should be backed because really impossible to see as it exactly happened.

70:30 In this case referee thinks the contact is not enough for a whistle and plays on. Still some reasons for referee if you ask me, but I would have liked to see a YC for simulation, if not penalty, because attacker falls theatrically and he asks for a penalty. So: either penalty or simulation in my opinion.

70:38 Reasons for second YC are not clearly shown, it looks like an unsporting behavior against the opponent, I think referee can be backed.

This is link for Extra Time:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sJTS1z5m9M

114:07 Soft call, especially if compared to the previous decisions, still supportable, but I would have prefered play on, to be honest. I don't see a clear foul / push from defender's side...

120:15 Clear foul, correct penalty, in this case no doubts. Referee assessed it as genuine attempt to play the ball. One can have doubts but for sure the decision is supportable. We can't be 100% sure that defender was not interested in playing the ball.

Well, a very challenging game for the Belgian, some positive notes, but there are points for improvement as well. I would say satisfactory performance if we want to back him regarding all crucial incidents...

    Tatar, Đikanović, Vojinović
    Obs: Young (SCO)

(NB I missed the first fourteen minutes of this match, if anyone saw them and I missed anything a comment below would be much appreciated).

I am not sure how Mr Young will receive this performance. Through one pair of glasses we can see the composed referee that managed to control this match by arousing calmness with other good facets to the performance, through other eyes we can see a passive referee that was limited in the variety of 'tools' he could use to control the match and was fortunate to hold onto the match until the end.

    Some points to consider:

=> I saw a good level of 'base' skills from Dabanović.
    * It was always predictable when he was going to whistle a foul- good. The players trusted his ability to find the difference between fair and unfair tackles.
    * He had a good recognition when players who were down were not 'injured', and resisted to stop the match
    * He could punish unsporting behaviour (44', 83', 85'), and breaking technical facets of LOTG eg removing the shirt (69', +92') with YCs.
    * Ability to take brave and unpopular decisions, sending off BES09 for a second caution for his excessive celebration in 92'. Montenegrin showed a solid level of base skills in this match.
    * He also showed some other finer, more refined skills that I will elaborate on below.

=> The most interesting topic is the approach of Dabanović. He really tried to stay in the background and only intervene when explicitly necessary. There are some positives to this approach:
+ He picked the right moments (30ish', 44', 83', 85') to become active. Considering his approach, this was crucial to keeping control.
+ He aroused calmness from the players, and didn't inflame the match. He never overreacted to one incident, even a tactical foul in front of the benches (63', good YC), didn't force him to abandon his calmness. This gave the players the impression that protesting would not make a difference to his decision making, good.
+ The biggest positive here in my opinion is that he showed a good ability to read a match on a sophisticated level. He showed a lot of 'smartness' on the pitch, and seemed to have a deep feeling for what were the hotter moments as they happened, solving them with the appropriate level of reaction.
This skill together with his foul recognition and excellent fitness are the qualities that surely took him to being a candidate for ascending to First Category.

=> However there were quite a few problems that this match revealed for Dabanović, in the field of disciplinary control/personality/managing the players.
    - The most obviously self-evident problem is that he always used the same gesture, this one (https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/readings-james-harper-is-told-to-calm-down-by-referee-martin-atkinson-picture-id834189522)
This is a good gesture, and it was really coherent with his approach. However, ALWAYS using the same gesture makes the referee look weak. It would have helped if the referee sometimes showed a big confidence in his decision, or at least to vary his gestures.
    - Around 30ish', he issued a verbal warning for a SPA-like foul to a BES player. This is good prevention, but instead of calling the player over to him he ran over to the player, this is bad for two reasons. 1) Calling him over would assure your authority on the pitch. 2) It would help to allow the match to return to calm by slowing it down, especially as the match was entering a hotter moment.
    - The verbal warning was good and appropriate at 30ish', but he was missing a stepped approach. Another (more) SPA-like foul occured at 40', and he only whistled the foul, not even walking over to the situation. This is because no players reacted, and the match was still at calm, so Dabanović wasn't really interested to manage the situation. This was the most worrying facet of the performance for my taste.

    1. If you cannot be bothered to read all these words, then this is my summary:
Dabanović showed to be a good REactive referee, but not a good PROactive referee. My big point for improvement would be, don't just manage the 'temperature', also act in prevention for the offences on the pitch.

=> His fitness and positioning was generally excellent, he was always close the evaluate duels and this surely helped his good foul detection. However at one moment this wasn't the case: BES hit a long ball from behind the halfway line, to the penalty area where the referee had to evaluate a crucial decision. He decided correctly to play on, but started using a dynamic sprint too late, and he was far away from the situation.

=> He seems to have a good pair of assistants in Tatar and Đikanović, and they formed a coherent team on the pitch, taking a lot of correct on/off-side decisions. Being from a 'small' association, Dabanović has a good argument on his side for his progression.

In summary, I saw a referee with a good potential, but a referee that needs more time to develop his personality/self-presentation to be a top class referee in UEFA. He is very good at the correct reactive action, but needs to become better at being a proactive referee. Willie Young was a referee with a big personality, so hopefully he can give Dabanović some tips how to improve on the pitch.
But he did a decent job tonight, and kept this tense match under control, the Montenegrin team should be content with how they performed in a not-so-easy match.

    3. Thank you for this post. Just to notice, because you mentioned assistants , he has different pair of assistants in every match. In his previous match in cl qualifiers he had completely different team with him.

    1. What do you think? Seems like a rather low-profile game, right? Maybe second leg CL play-off also or just this game?

    2. This season we have "only" 12 CL play off so I don't expect Mateu in another game. At the same time he could have handled a more interesting match in EL play offs... but for sure it is early to make judgments about the consideration by committee, let's wait for group stage.

    3. Yes, indeed it is early, but seems "strange" to see one of the top-10 Elite (at least in terms of previous appointments including WC list) in a 1st leg of an EL match which a priori doesn't seem too hot. Maybe it is, I don't know.

But all in all, it is an unexpected appointment for me.

    4. Don't forget that these appointments were made well in advance.

So, UEFA could expect a Feyenoord - Sturm Gratz duel.

  34. Some anticipations of EL appointments:

    Sigma - Sevilla Madden
    Sarpsborg - M. Tel-Aviv Bezborodov
    Gent - Bordeaux Agayev
    Rapid - FCSB Collum
    Zenit - Molde Aytekin
    Zorya - Leipzig Bastien
    Dudelange - Cluj Ekberg
    Suduva - Celtic Bebek
    Torpedo Kutaisi - Ludogorets Gocek

We have some Elite referees here, in my opinion big game for Agayev, who was recently promoted, a Belgian - French duel, among the most interesting matches.
