  1. Finally something interesting for Sidiropoulos. I think I will watch the game, so I will report about his performance, very important with a committee member. He must make a further step inside Elite category, of course only in terms of consideration by committee. I wish him good luck.
Committee member for Gözübüyük as well...

    1. Gözübüyük is clearly pushed for the Elite category in a couple of seasons.

Sidiropoulos must convince the committee that he can remain on the Elite. After the not so good last season, this feels like a big test for him.

      Delete
    2. Sidiropoulos deserves to remain in the Elite category. He tries to play the advantage and is very fit. Greek refs have a reputation of supporting Italian teams though. It has happened in the past countless times, especially when Vassaras was active.

      Delete
    3. I am not examining whether Sidiropoulos deserves to stay in the Elite. I am just saying that if the Dutchman won't be satisfied by his performance, then he will receive meaningless appointments and his Elite spot will be in grave danger.

      Delete
    4. I agree..Very important observer and appointment. He needs to avoid silly mistakes, as such he made today in the greek superleague.

  2. Good matches for Hategan, Sidiropoulos, Gozubuyuk, Makkelie and Kassai

  3. Heh, Greek commitee member for Dutch referee and Dutch commitee member for Greek referee. If not wrong this is third match for Uilenberg in this year qualifications, very unusual for committee member.

  4. Also, to be noticed: two new assistant referees for Karasev, Demeshko and Lunev. Demeshko attended some UEFA Youth Championships...
Both Averianov and Kalugin too old in any case for EURO 2020.

  5. I notice that spanish referees in this leg are appointed with their regular LaLiga AR2s, which are both non-FIFA. However, Mateu Lahoz was appointed with two FIFA ARs in the first leg. Why is it so?

BTW, any comments on Mateu's performance on the first leg? I couldn't watch the match.

  6. Marciniak is appointed for a CL play off - second leg.
Very positive signal for him: after having handled Super Cup, maybe this wasn't so much expected, considering that there are "only" 12 play off games. Big trust in the Polish and hopefully we are watching again the "old" Marciniak. We can also say that his performance in Super Cup has been assessed at least as expected level, otherwise he wouldn't have got a play off, I think.

    1. 1) Correct change
      2) Borderline, both decisions supportable, no VAR intervention is correct
      3) I can't detect any contact, therefore simulation - surprising, that VAR did not intervene
      4) Good punishments. But I wonder, whether with cards for coaches, he maybe would have seen only YC.

  8. Any further comments on Vincic's performance last night? He was terrible. He lost control of the match towards the end of first half , and never got it back. Players and managers were protesting constantly. The President of Olympiakos came down to have a word with at the interval. Two very debatable penalties, countless cautions, some of them quite ridiculous and very very bad man management. Sean Dyche was fuming at the end of the match. Hopefully, Kassai will be stronger and more decisive than Vincic. Based on yesterday's performance, Vincic does not deserve a champions league match this season. Too soft and not proactive.

  9. Penalty in the Bayern Hoffenheim game.

    https://streamable.com/it27c

Var did not even review the penalty decision. But it reviewed the penalty kick, which had to be retaken due to the goalkeeper off his line or players in the penalty box at the time of kick?

It wasn't a penalty in my opinion and I think Var should have asked for a review by the ref.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure about the penalty call either, Ribery kicks the ball too far away then dives over.

But good to see the VAR checking the penalty - too many times you see players getting away with encroachment.

The GK was maybe a step off his line, presumably the retake was because both teams were encroaching? As law 14 says: "if ... a player of both teams offends the Laws of the Game, the kick is retaken unless a player commits a more serious offence (e.g. illegal feinting);"

      Delete
    2. Yes, wrong penalty and missing VAR intervention. I would even say simulation, but play-on would also be OK.
I think, the retake was due to players entering the box to early - a good decision by VAR and referee.

In general a quite challenging and interesting match for Dankert - refereeing highlights would be appreciated ;)
Otherwise I will see, what I can find tomorrow.

      Delete
    3. Clearly a simulation, maybe VAR didn't intervene because there was somehow a contact but... difficult to accept.
It wouldn't have been a mistake, in my opinion, to invite referee to rewatch.

      Delete
    4. Should be a card for simulation otherwise it will be seen as accepted to jump over an opponent and pretend you got killed.

      Delete
    5. My guess is that VAR highlighted the encroachment because the player that scored (#10 red) was one of the heaviest encroachers.

      Delete
    6. The other main talking point is this disallowed goal for handball after VAR intervention:
      https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846856/ezgif.com-video-to-gif214.gif
      https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846860/ezgif.com-gif-maker53.gif
      https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846858/ezgif.com-video-to-gif213.gif

Furthermore no 2nd YC for Adams is criticized. Possibly the hardest of several fouls after his booking is this one:

      Delete
    7. VAR situations: https://streamable.com/bq9xp

      Delete
    8. DFB published a statement defending the missing VAR intervention at the penalty.
"The VAR has rightly not intervened in this situation, because he should only intervene if the situation is clearly and obviously wrong. In the present case, the Hoffenheim defender slides from the side in the duel with the Bayern player and does not hit the ball. The Bayern player lops the ball over the defender and then jumps over him. The defender pulls his leg up briefly and changes his body position by a turn. It comes to contact with the Bayern player. To judge this process as a foul is an interpretation question that remains with the referee. The discussions in this case also range from 'dive' over 'natural collision' to 'careless defensive behaviour bringing the opponent down'. The decision therefore has to be classified as 'controversial', but not as 'clearly and obviously wrong'."

This seems to be a minority opinion, but of course, it is the opinion, which counts. So we have to hope that this line is at least followed consistently throughout the season.

      Delete
    9. Thanks for this update, Philipp.
So now, according to this statement, I guess that penalties will be annulled only in case of NO CONTACT AT ALL between the players, as all the rest can belong to the category described by DFB.

    Painful Atkinson all the match.

    1. Stuff for VAR. Maybe Atkinson could have tried to have a better angle of view, but he is not a referee who can always ensure an accurate officiating, given his physical condition.

    7. That's the problem when a league allows 60 year old referee's to still be active. Of course, I am exaggerating on the age. But it's a known fact that some referee's in the EPL are "OLD". And I am left to question the physical standards expected by their Ref Comm. Or how strictly they enforce the standards. Especially when you see Atkinson struggling through matches or seeing Lee Mason and Jon Moss "waddle" through their matches.

First RC is fully correct and let me say, excellent that it was spotted!
Second RC for DOGSO: I think this is borderline to YC, however RC is acceptable and not wrong. One can think that the other defender could still try to reach the ball... but attacker would have joined the penalty area without other opponents.

    1. Surely borderline, but taking into account the direction in which the ball was kicked by the attacker, presence of the goalkeeper who was ready to intervene and that the ball was kicked quite heavily by the attacker who had no full possession anymore, I opt for a yellow card only - SPA by holding.

  25. Someone made this point on a forum elsewhere. With the Huddersfield red card given by Michael Oliver, for VC in this video: https://streamja.com/N0ej

Corner comes in, ball is cleared away to the halfway line then the VC occurs behind the referee's back, play is stopped with the ball still in play. The game later restarts with a free kick to the team who had committed VC - shouldn't it be the other way about (i.e. penalty)?

Such propaganda of Fontelas Gomes saying that everything would be transparent and clear after all was a big lie.
In Portugal there was no referee at the time 17-18 ratings, referees and assistant referees came down with value and kept others of dubious quality.

Two good second cautions from Steiler.
Phantom red card for Oliver, after advice of 4O or AR1.
The simulation call for Sidiropoulos in 82 is good decision.
Makkelie with good decisive handball penalty call in injury time.
Soares Dias with two soft but supportable penalty calls. Very little contact in either and these will provoke discussion.

Interesting situation involving Collum last Saturday, where he was very quick to give a RC after a challenge. The RC was appealed by Kilmarnock.

    Video: https://youtu.be/xm5wCmNJTAs?t=113

He was then appointed to the Old Firm game before the appeal was heard. If you were being cynical you'd say there was no way they were going to undermine his Old Firm appointment by overturning the RC!
Sure enough the appeal was rejected, prompting a statement from Steve Clarke: http://www.kilmarnockfc.co.uk/Article?id=7629&ShowCat=

Two words more aboutm Sidiropoulos, it is reported that he could have issued another YC for simulation to the player who was correctly then booked in 82', a few earlier he had committed another simulation, but outside the box. Sidiropoulos whistled a free kick, however nothing really crucial. He could have sent off as well a player from Atalanta who committed two rough fouls but got only one YC.
However, overall, I think expected level, if one doesn't want to count beans.

Yesterday in serie A game Milan - Roma we had two interesting VAR interventions.
In the first case (60:30 match minute) a goal scored by Milan is then disallowed following a revision (we have accuracy on offside starting from this season). On last season, AR should have been backed and goal allowed. Such situations are impossible to assess for assistant referees live.
Second VAR intervention: match minute 78:00 disallowed goal by Roma, following a previous control by arm, missed by referee. You can see how short the revision is, this could mean that referee had already some doubts and he was looking jkust for confirmation, otherwise, second option is that communication and selection of images by VAR has been for sure excellent. I never saw a so short revision (about 1 or 2 seconds).

So far, in two matchdays and one game of MD3 (yesterday's Milan - Roma) we had VAR interventions only for offside and handballs.
Handball incidents related to goal or penalties occurred in: Chievo - Juventus, Cagliari - Sassuolo, Milan - Roma, Parma - Udinese.
So I would say the field of VAR application has become for sure more narrow, but at the same time handballs stay as "big problem".
I will inform you when we will have the first VAR intervention for a "normal" foul (no handball).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Only 3 VAR interventions in 2 matchdays in Spain.

2 of them in Rayo Vallecano-Sevilla (MD1, Referee Mateu Lahoz, VAR De Burgos Bengoetxea), a goal conceded after wrong offside and a PK conceded when Mateu said DFK)

The other one in Espanyol-Valencia (MD2, Referee Del Cerro Grande, VAR Melero López), when a free-kick resulted in a ghost goal Del Cerro Grande didn't initially concede, corrected by Melero López)

We haven't seen still neither an OFR nor a single RC.

    3. Make it five. Another one for Mateu Lahoz (or better said, Iker de Francisco): goal disallowed due to offside. Very difficult call, IMO impossible to spot live.
