  1. Kuipers and Skomina with two decesive games. The last chance for Slovenian to show his best and, finally, to get UCL final.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Kuipers with a decisive game, very good that his injury was nothing serious. Debuts for Kabakov and Ekberg, the latter will be observed by Trentalange. Stieler back in CL after one year in a rather not so much important game. Madden with his second CL game after the debut.
Turpin gets the third game, missed earlier due to an injury, in this case game importance is not that relevant.
Taylor match is important only for home-team and EL qualification.
The big question is about Soares Dias: what happened? Three group stage games but all were low profile. It seems as Portuguese is not full convincing committee for some reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Why Gozubuyuk still doesn't have UCL match while Massa has 2 and Kabakov got chance?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Andreas Ekberg's most recent match was the crucial Allsvenskan relegation playoff between Brommapojkarna - Eskilstuna which went down to the final seconds, on 25th / November.
Find out how the Swede got on in my extended report below

    https://kronikasedziowska.blogspot.com/p/brommapojkarna-eskilstuna.html

Maybe a 'dead rubber' but one can't really ask for a better debut than Valencia - Manchester United at Estadio de Mestalla. In my opinion fully deserved for the Bulgarian, who was very impressive when I watched him in Ludogorets - Levski Sofia earlier this year (find my report on the "Mikael's Reports" tab on Kronika sędziowska).

Otherwise, Taylor progresses well now under FdB's eyes, nice to see Stieler back, Soares Dias can be slightly disappointed, good game for Turpin (EL Final?) and obviously an un-injured Kuipers with the decisive match.
I expected a debutante in Madden's place (Gözübüyük?) to be honest.

    1. Ağayev without a third appointment, one could have guessed him.
If he is injured / unavailable for some reasons, then maybe Madden is a replacement? If not a technical choice for Ağayev, of course.

    2. The battle for the Baku final after me it is between Ovidiu Hategan and Clement Turpin. They didn`t had a committee memeber after all in the group stages. Maybe in the KO stages.

  5. The least appreciate elite referees with only 2 UCL/UEL matches : Aytekin, Karasev, Kassai, Undiano Mallenco.

    1. Sorry but the fourth official having a frontal view there... he should have intervened! Shocking foul, mandatory RC, clearly Taylor without any perception of what had exactly happened!

      Delete
    2. Mandatory YC, maybe RC would be too harsh.

      Delete
    3. But with VAR this would’ve been definitely a RC!

      Delete
    4. RC for me, but if a YC had been issued, I'm not sure if VAR would have overturned the decision.

Chefren, no way the FO can intervene there. It's too far away from his position. It is entirely possible that Rome #17 was blocking his view.

      Delete
    5. @Marco Neri: Your two comments together don't make sense. If the RC is "maybe too harsh", it can't be a clear and obvious mistake, so no VAR.

For me, it is no clear SFP, because the leg is not fully stretched and the main movement is upwards (not horizontal), therefore the intensity is not very high. Still, a RC is possible and no error.

      Delete
    6. I do not see a text like “these situations show why ... not an elite referee” (it was written yesterday about another match, and there was nothing similar).

      Delete
    7. @Philipp S
I did not express my thoughts properly: IMO it’s not a RC for the reasons you expressed BUT I also think that VAR would’ve intervened and assessed it as RC

      Delete
  7. Possible penalty for Roma a few minutes ago. Taylor played on.

    1. Is there a contact? YES
Is it preventing Schick from taking the ball? NO
I think play on can be supported

      Delete
    2. I would say penalty, but not black/white.

  8. Soares Dias is kind of overrunning. How can it be that he is closer to the goal line than the attackers during a counter-attack?

  10. Ekberg whistled a penalty to Hoffenheim for a not genuine foul inside the box (pushing). This should have been at least YC. No card by Swedish crew.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Pushing and holding, maybe even a borderline RC.

      Delete
    2. Agreed, Howard. One can even think about a RC for DOGSO. No card is definitely not acceptable.

      Delete
    3. In the moment of the foul there is nobody to intervene in my opinion. Red Card.

      Delete
    4. Agree with Howard. RC for me

      Delete
    5. I just saw this incident on replay. How on earth is that not a red card?

Red Card (SFP) missed by Georgi Kabakov? Bulgarian assessed the tackle as reckless.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a very strange incident.

Valencia is reckless, sure. But what on earth is Lato doing? He suffers more contact because he chooses not to play the ball. He goes into the contact leading with his right foot, when any actual attempt to control the ball would have been made with his left leg.

      Delete
    2. Indeed very strange. The result of the challenge Lato's leg is terrifying (see image below), but I understand that Kabakov, at first sight, decided to issue a YC. Contact is made with knee (and I don't remember how UEFA RAP wants to assess this kind of challenges)

      https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DuPpqw9XgAAdTpH.jpg

      Delete
    3. Watching the video, indeed, one has the perception of a reckless challenge, not more than that, but the player is really suffering a big pain, as the audio demontrates... I would support Kabakov for this reason. At least, live, he couldn't understand more.

      Delete
    4. It almost looks like Lato went into the challenge intending to hurt Valencia and he got injured instead. It's hard to put into words. But hopefully people understand what I'm saying. Lato makes no attempt to play the ball.

      Delete
    5. It really reminded me on the tackle Shawcross-Ramsey, but thankfully with less horrific consequences.

I would hope that UEFA wants a RC in these situations, the amount of force the knee can generate is incredibly dangerous (moreover than studs even), but I wouldn't hold it too much against Kabakov and Diyan Valkov, on a perception-recognition level it was a hard situation.

Besides quite good debut in my opinion, Mr Kabakov showed his class in how he solved the Bailly caution- he 'won' 1H in this moment.

    2. @Chefren, does the committee take care of these situations?

      Delete
    3. Well, I don't know, but for sure Kuipers confirmed to be absolutely fit, otherwise he wouldn't have been appointed.

      Delete
  13. For what reason do you want YC Chefren ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Do you mean the situation in Manchester? Stopping a promising attack.

  14. Penalty to Young Boys, I think suggested to Stieler by AAR2.

    1. And correctly so. Clumsy tackle by the defender.

    2. And also not that easy to spot for the referee crew. That far very good performance by the Germans

      Delete
    3. I agree. Right decision by Stieler.

      Delete
  15. 28’ penalty whistled by Stieler, but it looks like there was a foul on the defender before that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ekberg quite lenient overall when it comes to disciplinary management.

    ReplyDelete
  17. In my oopinion if you wisstle for penalty there is only one way to go RC. You say promising attack...it can never be YC !

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At least YC, indeed I wanted to say that NO CARD is definitely a huge mistake!

      Delete
    2. For me it is clear Red Card to Man City Player. I don't understand why Ekberg no card gives?

      Delete
  18. I have one question on the time management, taking City’s match as example.
A goal was scored nearly at the end of injury time. Then the ref whistles the end right after the kick off. What’s the point in doing that? Why don’t they put end to the first half right after the goal?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because the time was probably not over at the moment of goal. So it would be technically incorrect to end the match then. After the kick-off, enough time has passed.
The same can be seen with goal kicks sometimes.
But I agree, that is does not make much sense. I don't know the instructions there.

      Delete
    2. I would either finish it after the goal or conceded further additional time. Like this is just a waste of time!

      Delete
  19. Correct onside on Ajax’s goal.

    1. And correct offside on Lyon disallowed goal.

      Delete
    2. Excellent performance by Cyril Gringore. Two close and important decisions correctly taken.

      Delete
    3. @Quilava indeed, quite obvious offside but not that easy to see, there were many players between Fekir and AR2. Crucial and absolutely correct decision.

      Delete
  20. Correct RC Wöber given by Turpin. SFP, studs on the ankle. We’ll spot by Turpin/ 4O. AR1 didn’t spot it

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very good RC for SFP by Turpin. Full perception and reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Correct RC for SFP by Turpin.

IMO, missed two consecutive fouls on Ajax players, they were frustrated with Turpin's foul detection.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Excellent decision by Turpin, quite similar to Skomina’s YC yesterday

    ReplyDelete
  24. Another red card in Amsterdam given by Turpin

    ReplyDelete
  25. Another clear and mandatory RC by Turpin. Very bad foul. Excellent decision again.

    1. And now a penalty was correctly given. From what I have seen, 8.6 level by the French. Impressive development within the last years.

      Delete
    2. Yet another penalty! Amazing performance by Turpin, nothing to add.

  26. Clean PK for Ajax. Foul from Boateng on Dolberg. We’ll spot by Turpin

  29. What a challenging game for Turpin and what a performance...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I couldn‘t watch the whole game but I haven‘t seen such an excellent (team) performance for a long time. 4(!) crucial decisions correctly taken, 2 tight and crucial onside decisions by AR2. Well, one can say that this performance was a clear recommendation by the French for one of the finals.

      Delete
  30. Turpin should be 8.7/8.8 tonight. Excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Technically you're absolutly correct Chefren. But because of his style body language (or lack of it) it isn't looking that he has it under controle for my style. I find him always looking very anxious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I understand what you mean. Maybe some of these incidents could have been prevented with a different approach but for sure technically you can't say anything.

      Delete
    2. Not anxious : focused :D

      Delete
  32. Correct SPA and 2nd YC by Madden.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Correctly disallowed goal by AR2 in Bern. Cristiano Ronaldo was assessed in active offside position. Not clear whether he touched the ball or not, but in both cases decision is fully correct. Well seen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Excellent offside decision disallowing the equalizer of Juventus. Teamwork went very well here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 2 correct RC, 2 correct PK...Turpin deserves quite a high mark today! (8.7-8.8?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anything below 8.7 is not good mark in this kind of game. Very strong referee. Can we see him in the Finals ?

      Delete
    2. He‘s a very strong candidate for EL Final for me. UCL would be too early this season but of course in the next years if Turpin keeps his high standard :)

      Delete
  36. One of the best performances if not the best performance by a CL ref this season by Turpin tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just saw a fast replay from Ajax 3rd goal. It looked a blatant offside. Wasn’t it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He was 4 metres in offside. BUT. If it was a handball by the Bayern defender the deliberate save becomes a deliberate play. In this case, fully correct procedure.

      Delete
    2. Not a deflection by the defender but rather an intentional play in sense of the LotG. So, the original offside position is not relevant.

      Delete
    3. 3 meter offside. How can this situation be evaluated as Bayern defender intentionally played the ball. Blatant offside for me.

      Delete
    4. Are you saying Turpin evaluated it as a voluntary handball?

      Delete
    5. If it's a handball (which it is from replays in my opinion), THEN the rule wants this to be a deliberate play making the offside irrelevant (because if a handball is deemed deliberate, it is also deliberately played).

If the referees missed the Handball, it's definitely not a deliberate play but a deliberate save. In this case, the decision cannot be supported.

It depends on what the team will tell the observer, and what the replays show. (if they are clever, they will say they have deemed it as a deliberate handball / advantage).

      Delete
    6. From Turpin’s body language it doesn’t seem he was going to whistle a penalty. Btw a really excellent performance for him. In case, the error should be assigned to AR2

      Delete
    7. Regardless if its handball, the bayern defender made a deliberate attempt to play the ball. In this case by trying to block the shot. One cannot judge this as an innocent deflection thus it is not offside.

      Delete
    8. Blatant offside. A deflected shot is not a deliberate attempt to play the ball.

      Delete
  38. The best Turpin I've ever seen so far. Trés bien!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I liked Turpin's and AAR's quick reaction after the Ajax equalizer, it resulted in a YC.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well, it seems as this season things are turning better for committee.
For sure Turpin is a candidate for EL final, it would be also a logical consequence after the appointment as fourth official in CL final on last season. In addition, we have also Hategan, a strong contender, without nationality "problems" (I mean, teams from the same country). That's surely positive.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, also Orsato and Zwayer and maybe Collum seem possible. Of course, everyone needs to get through KO stage without major problems first.

      Delete
    2. Regarding Italy, with Rocchi still there he should be the first option ahead Orsato for both Europa and Champions League, he deserves that.

      Delete
    3. For Rocchi, I was thinking CL final or nothing. If he has a good season, he is the favourite for the CL final, if not, there are better candidates for the EL final.

      Delete
    4. Turpin gained a very good position in UEFA's ranking during last 12 months.
Before WC play-offs Turpin was clearly behind Hategan. In october 2017, at WC u17, Hategan whistled a SF and Turpin whistled only a QF. Also, at that time, Hategan already whistled a SF in Europa League (Man Utd- Celta Vigo), Turpin not. But after that came that WC play-off with a terrible mistake. Turpin went to WC 2018, Hategan not. Turpin was sent to very important games in the spring of 2018 like Roma- Barcelona or Arsenal- Atletico (and he did a good job), Hategan not. That's the story, in this moment Turpin is (clearly) ahead of Hategan.
I agree with the fact that Turpin is main contender for the final of EL. Mainly because Marciniak had a terrible 2018 and is clearly out of form. I have to say that Turpin made a nice progress in last few years, after that Feyenoord- Roma. But I believe that EL final can be given to a spanish referee (if there won't be spanish teams in the final). Spanish referees were penalised by the fact that in last years we had Real, Barca, Atletico, Sevilla in the european cups finals. It's very possible to have a EL final without a spanish team in 2019. There are teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Napoli, Inter, Milan, Lazio in Europa League and Sevilla, Valencia and (maybe) Villarreal are not so good this season.

  41. Successful debut for Georgi Kabakov in my opinion.

75' 2nd YC?, A. Valencia for SPA => No Video Clip yet, but surely acceptable call

  42. Consequence of Valencia's challenge on Lato, Kabakov assessed it as a YC, but as many people have commented before, I wouldn't blame Kabakov too much.

    1. Good prevention when 3-3 was scored, but this goal was offside. Never a deliberate play, and since the player who scored was clearly in offside, I think it was missed cooperation there.

      Delete
    2. about the 3-3 goal, IMO given that the defender did play intentionally the ball in order to deflect if off the goal, it is not an offside position !

      Delete
    3. How you can say its not offside position LMAO? Its clear offside, never deliberate play, it reflected only, he didnt play the back pass !

      Delete
    4. The distance is to big to not speak about a delibetate play. The defender can clearly see the ball coming and he clearly moves his body towards the ball.

      Delete
    5. I 100% agree with Tom here. It is not an unintentional deflection. He made a deliberate attempt to play the ball. The distance is too large. He had plenty of time to think about how he would play the ball. Defender misjudged it which ultimately fell to the attacker who scored. This does not matter however, in the end the defender made an intentional play. One must trust Turpin and the AR judgement in this situation. Especially with the crew on such good form.

      Delete
    6. But it was a shot on goal, a strong one even. In this case, mostly targeted body movements are somehow intuitive and therefore interpreted as a deliberate save.

I really think it's a deliberate handball by Kimmich. And I also think that Turpin and Gringore are extremely lucky. Without knowing it, I believe it was actually a blackout, missing this offside, which can however be called a correct or at least supportable decision afterwards.

      Delete
    7. And actually it's also very astonishing that Assistant Referee 1 seriously flagged a throw-in for the first expulsión.

      Delete
    8. I really think '94' is offside. That's not a deliberate play on the ball. Had it been deliberate then it's handling and then you would have seen a penalty called.

      Delete
    9. Totally agree with Victor.
It was a deflected shot, nothing more. Blatant offside. We didn't see the intention of Turpin to whistle a penalty, also we didn't see the sign of an advantage (if we can talk about advantage in case of a penalty...). It's a huge miss of AR2 (but only of AR 2 ?)

      Delete
    10. I really don't think the AR missed such offside, especially with the ones he spotted before in the game. I think they just judged that the player deliberately played the ball.

      Delete
    11. @Nathan, I just realised that you have Turpin in your profile photo :) I already told, there was no sign of advantage (with the hands) from Turpin.
That's the main issue of this blog. Many members try to defend the referees when is not the case.

      Delete
  44. What dou you think about the situation on Kimmich in the first half?
Should have Turpin whistled for a penalty or not?
And another earlier when Ajax's captain was/or not fouled in the penalty area after a corner. Opinions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO it is play on. Kimmich can shoot the ball and then he and his opponent crush together. But Turpin could handle the Situation better in terms of trying to explain it to kimmich. Instead he let kimmich get more and more emotional and it ends up in a head to head between kimmich an turpin and a yellow card

      Delete
    2. Does anyone have a video about this situation? And about the other I metioned above?

For me it was a clear penalty after Kimmich kikcked the ball. So it was a crucial mistake by Turpin IMO.
I agree with you that he handled Kimmich's reaction poorly.

      Delete
    3. IMO supportable no penalty in both situations. Indeed, Kimmich's reaction could have been handle in a better way. However Kimmich went up really angry and i don't know if he was ready to hear an explanation. From what i usually see, in this kind of situations, he has a quick talk with the player a few minutes later when he is more calm.

    4. I have found a video about the situation. From 02:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jx6HXJVE60
from the replay you can see the ball is still in play when the foul was committed.

  45. I actually don't think Turpin was that good yesterday. Yes, he got his crucial decisions right, but both red cards were a result of Turpin losing control of the game and both teams getting more and more frustrated at his unclear and poor foul detection. If this were a European final, no one would be happy about the referee, even though both red cards and both penalties were correct.

    1. I completely agree with you, I felt the same when I was watching the match. In addition, IMO Turpin missed a penalty (mentioned above).

    2. Agree, I copy-paste what I posted when Turpin issued the first RC.

"Correct RC for SFP by Turpin.

IMO, missed two consecutive fouls on Ajax players, they were frustrated with Turpin's foul detection"

    3. Indeed. I have the same opinion. I am very surprised to read all of the compliments in this blog. Despite the justified red cards Mister Turpin made a lot of (small) mistakes

    4. For this reason is very good to see a game on a stadium. You can see everything, even things which are not shwon in TV. That's why referee observer are on the stadium, not in front of TV.
I didn't watch entire game, I saw only important moments. Indeed, if you see only penalties and red card you will say that Turpin was very good. probably that's the case of majority from this blog.

OT last summer I was in Russia for two games. Referees were Geiger (ENG- COL) and Cunha (FRA- BEL). Despite positive reviews here, on the blog, my impression from stadium was bad about both of them.

    5. I agree, but watching the whole game in front of TV gives a good impression as well. And I must say Turpin was excellent during Ajax - Kiev so he had a lot of positive comments in the Netherlands (where he is still famous for Feyenoord - Roma), but it was just bad yesterday. Football is still a game for fans so not only the players but also the fans should be able to understand the referee, which wasn't the case yesterday.

OT I don't know who had positive reviews about Geiger but I still remember that performance as one of the worst I've ever seen.

    6. Correct. I was in the stadium last night.

    7. I just rewatched the game just to be sure. As i saw it live, IMO it was a top performance (especially in second half). I don't really know when you saw that he was losing control of the game, I found him always focus and he never let the stadium atmosphere disturb him and his foul detection. I think you can't say the overall referee performance was bad when he take 4 crucials decisions correctly + 2 supportable no penalty (IMO) in first half. The big debatable decision was the last goal (offside). Probably missed cooperation between officials. However, the AR2 took at least 3 great decisions before. We'll see what comitee think in next appointments.

    8. I think there was no clear line in decisions, and because of that frustration grew with both the players and public. I also felt like his style didn't really match the game, which he should have known after some time. He came across as quite arrogant as well. It's a shame because I thought he was excellent during Ajax - Kiev. I'm not a referee expert but imo fans should be able to understand referee's decisions as well which was definitely not the case during Ajax - Bayern, the fact that quite a few agree with me supports that. Of course I can't argue with the 4 crucial decisions (though I think those were pretty obvious). But my point was that imo it was quite obvious that both red cards were a direct result of Turpin's foul management and the growing frustration from both teams with regards to Turpin.

    9. Opinion about the situation against Kimmich? From 02:40

    10. As I watched many of these situations in the past, everything is at referee's discretion. When a player shots on goal and then he is fouled, most of the referee don't consider the challenge as relevant. In this case player was fouled after having hit the ball. Foul could have been whistled. There isn't a specific instruction about that, but basically when the challenge doesn't influence the play and it isn't reckless, play on seems to be the best solution. In any case never a clear penalty / crucial mistake, if you ask me. Situation must be more blatant.

    11. Thank you for your answer, Chefren!
I know that referees usually don't give penalties for situations like this, but my opinion is that your explanation is not good. It doesn't matter if a challange had ifluence on the play or not. It doesn't matter if it was reckless or not. If it was a foul, it must have been a penalty IMO.
Imagine that the ball is in play somewhere in the halfway line's vicinity when a defender is making a careless foul on an opponent. Does it have effect on the play? No. Was is reckless? No. Should the referee give a penalty? Yes.
In this specific situation I think it was reckless also. The attacker needed to get treatment as well.

    12. I mean, that the defender is making a careless foul on an opponent in his own penalty area.

    13. This is the first time when I watched that situation with Kimmich. For me it's foul, without any doubt (also reckless).

But it's true that referees don't whistle too often a foul in these cases. Honestly, I don't know why. I remember Cakir had two similar situations in 2018 and he took different decisions:
      - no penalty in Juventus- Real (foul on Cuadrado in the last second of the game)
      - penalty in Salzburg- Crvena Zvezda (Salzburg scored their 2nd goal if I remeber well)

  46. What do you think about the PK by Lewandowski. He interrupted twice! Not a "fluent" move I think.

    1. The law says that there is an offence if "feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up (feinting in the run-up is permitted); the referee cautions the kicker".
