  1. Completely OT, but here are some of the incidents from Hector Sorto's performance in MALI vs FRANCE at U20 World Cup.

20' - reckless foul? Not even a verbal warning here given by the referee.

21' - should this holding have been punished with a YC?

22' - shocking NO CARD decision here by the referee for what should have been IMO a RC for SFP: studs-up tackle which goes down all the leg. VAR Hernández Hernández did not intervene in that situation.

24' - missing YC for reckless foul.

25' - Sorto decided (finally) to open the cards at this foul.

31' - YC for FRA18, but also here the sanction should have been RC for SFP in my opinion: studs-up tackle with contact made on the knee. Also here no intervention by VAR, Hernández Hernández supported the YC decision.

52' - Reckless foul vs SFP? Also here, referee opts for a YC, supported by VAR.

63' - Penalty for FRA after handball. IMO a correct decision, arm is detached from the body, in an unnatural position and there is enough reaction time for the player to take his arm away.

70' - Penalty appeal FRA: missing YC for simulation?

A detailed report will follow in the next days, but what I have seen yesterday by Sorto, resonates pretty much with what Chefren already wrote about him in QATAR vs UKRAINE. Referee unfortunately did not manage to take the heat out of the game by opening the cards much earlier. Weak disciplinary control leads to a lack of prevention and brings on much more aggressiveness in the duels and he was not entirely accepted by players (at some moments, I had the feeling that Sorto looked a bit too nervous, but that might have been my personal impression).

What do you think about those incidents?

    1. Definitely worse than Qatar - Ukraine, at least in that game there were some positive notes, here the level of performance is very low regarding disciplinary control from what I can read and see!
23' is a dark YC, I would have liked to see RC. Maybe not a 100% clear RC and that's why VAR didn't intervene, but it is a blatant mistake by referee.
31' it is indeed another possible RC for SFP but at least in this case YC was issued.
52' the same here, basically one would like RC.
About the penalty incidents, I agree with handball, in 70' if not penalty, then simulation for me. Player tried to deceive referee. But we know FIFA differently from UEFA, the simulation must be very clear as it happened in his previous game (46'). Here one can have still small doubts that player didn't do that on purpose. However, no penalty is OK.
No VAR interventions and one could say still good: but that's not the case this time. A very poor disciplinary control by referee can't be hidden by the VAR protocol "clear and obvious mistake". At least he got penalty calls right.

    2. All three potential SFP incidents could have been red carded. Lack of VAR intervention is OK in 22' and 31' as contacts were not full, if you know what I mean, but the knee in the head when your opponent is in front of you is a red card all day long (52').

    3. 70 is not a simulation, his backfoot touches the knee of the defender after the first ghost contact. That's why he fell but it's not a foul it's just a regular contact.

  2. I fully recommend it! It was such a great experience last year.

  3. OT

The most important incident of the ECU-MEX U20 Match

  4. Herrera in RSA - POR.
I was not satisfied by referee's performance. Despite of two missed penalties, both deliberate handballs were detected by VAR, there is something to add about disciplinary control, in a game which was, to be honest, not that difficult under this point of view, but still...

49' Penalty for deliberate handball after OFR

56' Missed a clear (at least) YC for reckless challenge (only a not so convincing advantage gesture a few seconds after the incident)

57' Penalty for deliberate handball after OFR
    https://streamable.com/rs1lk

66' Possible YC for reckless challenge (no foul whistled)

90'+1 The only YC of the game, YC for reckless challenge
