  1. Interesting that all the officials in Porto - Krasnodar game have been confirmed from the previous round (Plzen - Olympiacos), this should mean they all had a good assessment by observer Murat Ilgaz.
It is not common to see the same trio again (including fourth official) when not all the team-members are FIFA officials.

    1. I was going to report it as well, Nathan. In my opinion, brave and correct decision.

      Referee: Ruddy Buquet
      4th: Johan Hamel
      VAR: François Letexier, Sylvain Palhies

    2. I wonder, whether it was even assessed as VC, because Fabregas' leg movement looks quite unnatural - but slow-motion might be deceiving here.
If it was "only" for SFP, it is not "clear and obvious" for ma, because there was not much intensity and danger for the opponent.
Anyway, the RC surely is not wrong and Buquet might not have had the full perception of the point of contact, therefore the OFR probably was justified as well.

      Delete
    3. To be added: Buquet's initial decision was a YC.

@Philipp: my impression was that the referee saw a deliverate kick but, given the speed it happened, could not really see the point of contact, as well as the intensity. Therefore an OFR was recommended.

      Delete
    4. I agree, I think VC here. I think about deliverate kick since the ball was far away and the player could have avoid the contact. Also he was quite frustrated since a couple of minutes.

      Delete
  4. Is this allowed? The player already has a YC.

    1. If I'm not wrong, this should be forbidden, because the player "uses a deliberate trick to pass the ball [...] to the goalkeeper with the head, chest, knee etc. to circumvent the Law, whether or not the goalkeeper touches the ball with the hands" (Law 12, section "disciplinary action", paragraph "unsporting behaviour").

Player should receive a(nother) YC, game should be restarded with an indirect free-kick. Similar situation to be compared to Nantes-PSG, two yeara go in L1.

    1. 05' - didn't look as clear on the replays, but it seems as he makes himself (unnaturally) bigger. Not a clear mistake, YC has to be given since a shot on goal is prevented.

26' - argument for reckless could be that he's making the move, taking the full risk of hitting the opponent. I wouldn't mind a 2YC here, but it would be difficult to sell on the pitch, since player got the ball.

34' - I can understand the no-whistle here, you can also see that the attacking player is clearly looking for the contact (see the action with his left arm, he hold his opponent, then only falls). I'm fine with no penalty here.

65' and 90' - both clear reckless stamps, no doubts about the YC here.

74' and 90' - in both situations, it's SPA. Perhaps one thing to say about the 2YC, Marciniak could have waited until the player is completely back on his feet (not making the referee look superior in comparison to the player).

78' - rather careless, rather an unlucky constellation. Opponent's head goes down as well (looking for the ball), player can't anticipate that.

      Delete
    2. 05'
Unexpected situation for referee (defender's mistake), but still a tendency by Marciniak to be too far away from play. Penalty is correct, movement of arms is uncoordinated, defender should have avoided that. Also, one question: if one is sure that ball is about to enter the net without any chance for keeper, can issue a straight RC for DOGSO? This was a very clear situation in front of the net, a bit different from the classic handballs stopping a shot on goal in which you can think keeper will save it. However, just for discussing, YC is OK as well I think.

      26'
In my opinion it is reckless. Clear contact foot / head, in this case one can't keep YC.

      34'
Watching replay, it looks indeed clear that defender makes that on purpose to stop the opponent, preventing him from reaching the ball. The classic situation in which according to laws you can whistle penalty, but looking at the real effects on the pitch, nobody complains too much and play on is accepted.

      65' - 90'
      Correct decisions.

      74' - 90'
      Both yellow cards are correct.

      78'
I don' understand how you can assess this as only careless, clear YC for me.

      2) https://vk.com/video-154719835_456240901?t=1h55m39s

I would say both would be deemed as (clearly) wrong in UEFA competitions nowadays but I like the calls, especially the first one - such deliberate kick from behind should be always deemed as violent conduct, imo.

    3. 1st RC: I agree, a RC is not expected there nowadays, but maybe not clear and obviously wrong (for VAR intervention)
2nd RC: This one is more acceptable IMO, but doubtful, whether a clear mistake. And probably no missed incident either as the referee gave advantage. Furthermore you should think twice to give it after a harsh first RC for the same team. Would be more understandable if given to the other team (from a tactical point of view).
The penalty is correct in my opinion - and probably was a missed incident.

      Delete
    4. 1 is absolutely not violent conduct. In that case ask IFAB to change the laws of the game. It was not excessive force or brutality and the opponents safety was not even close to be in danger. Simple unsporting behaviour, yellow card.

      Delete
    5. Thanks for the videos. I mostly agree with Philipp's analysis, I'm convinced that second RC was not VAR stuff. RC should have been accepted only if issued by referee on the pitch. It is not a 100% clear RC, but RC is better than YC.
      Who was VAR?
However, I must say, with such subjective stuff (penalties and red cards) it is very difficult to find consistency by VARs in the line of intervention. Under this aspect, this is a clear problem, because it is like VAR officiates again the game from the room by reporting his opinion to referee about a certain incident...

      Delete
    6. VAR intervened three times. Two penalties and a red card.

I do agree with the first RC, to me the second RC could have been a second yellow card too.

However, brave decisions and: he clearly cared to protect the safety of the players. I like that.

      Delete
    7. But he didn't care to 'do what football wants' by keeping all players on the field of play and he will pay for that ;)

    8. I am not so sure. Over all, the Dutch FA usually prefers this approach I think. Of course, they want managers on the pitch, but there is a reason why Kuipers hands out quite a lot of cards in the Eredivisie.

      Delete
    9. How often have you seen Kuipers, or any of the other Dutch international referees, giving a RC for this particular kind of offence?

      Delete
    10. Quite often, if you count the busy years of Blom.

39.45 EA 8 yellow card for reckless tackle.

45+1 US 24 yellow card for reckless tackle.

47.55 US 4 yellow card for illegal use of arm.

67.20 Possible penalty for (US) pushing. Correct play on IMO,not enough to whistle.

75.30 Very good apporach to be proactive and stop possible mass confrontation.

91.50 US 26 yellow card for kicking the ball to the goal after offside decison.

It was the last test for Frappart before the Super Cup Final. She did very good performance with her team. She has excellent physical condition, very good football understanding and self-confidence. She is also a strong referee. I am sure that They will do a great match in Istanbul. 1. Thanks for the clips - very alert refereeing by Adrien Jaccottet.

For my taste he deserves a second chance in UEFA - he was pushed much around 2015-16 when he attended U17 EURO, made his EL group stage début but this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEigL4xOOic) happened in Youth League and they focused on Sandro Schärer ever since, with great success too.

I like his way of refereeing, reminding me on Alberto Undiano Mallenco - no great manager, just focusing on getting each decision correct. It seems that Rosetti is giving him a second consideration, I hope that continues with an EL group match later this year.

  30. Craig Pawson in AFC Ajax v PAOK FC

    - challenging game for Englishman; after 2-2 in the first leg, today's match was very tense and the advancing team was not known till the last whistle; some tensions between players resulting rather from emotions / frustration than unsporting attitude

    - three penalties given in favour of Ajax were spot on and brave decisions (push, handball that was significantly out from the body and careless challenge)

    - application of the LoTG was almost perfect in the first half, including a very good stepped approach (PAOK players warned in 4' and 9'), dropped ball for the ball hitting the referee (8'), YC 21AJX for reckless tackle (26'), correctly assessed a GK v attacker incident as a collision (45', ball was played by the GK). Missed an elbow offence (37') was perhaps the only fail.

    - second half was not as good as first; six yellow cards (2-4) were spot on but missing most likely a RC to PAOK player for deliberate off-the-ball stamp (52'), some rather clear Ajax players' fouls missed (83' - leading to a corner kick after which the decisive penalty was given, 90+' - making PAOK players furious) and a generally too permissive approach in the dying stages showed that Craig needs more experience in UEFA competitions in order to handle such big, close games

    - Greek players were furious about the last whistle coming too early according to them -> added time: 4', they scored at 92:52, the game was restarted at 93:40 and the final whistle was at 94:20 -> scoring a goal doesn't usually mean more added time but as there was time-wasting from AJX goalkeeper for which he was booked, there was a need of adding some time, maybe 10-20 secs more would've been a better solution? at least two YCs for dissent were given after the final whistle

    1. I would say that the third penalty was a bit soft. Not wrong though. Generally good performance with points to improve in how to handle the last 20 min of a tense game. I wpuld give him 8.0-8-2 considering how challenging the match was.

      Delete
    2. 3 penaltys cant be 8.0, more like 8.6 if everything is correct.

      Delete
    3. well..his performance in the last 20 minutes was too passive. He lacked personality on the pitch. One or two RC missing for bad tackles and bad behaviour. He lacked authority..The third penalty was indeed soft. A mark higher than 8 but definitely less than 8.3

      Delete
  32. Mazeika - what to say?! Very challenging match for him. Several good and several bad decisions. First of all, missed clear penalty in 1st minute. Both RC were correct (two 2nd YCs, all YCs were correct). But, he gave cautions for Zvezda players for small protests. One, maybe two can be called dissent - the rest were small protests, talking to him (I believe that Cakir would give maybe 1 YC in total for "dissent"). All of them occured because he didn't whistle fouls or out for Zvezda. Mazeika refused to talk with players - he decided everything to solve with the cards. I dislike that approach. Mostly after his small mistakes he gave yellow cards for small protests. Furthermore, he missed foul in very dangerous situation for Zvezda close to PK area in 1st overtime, and in 2nd overtime missed also clear foul for Kobenhavn at 17 meters from the goal (and he was very close, strange that he didn't see it). At the penalty shoutout, after first Zvezda penalty, Kobenhavn goalkeeper was jumping, strongly shaked the bar and player hit the bar from the penalty. I don't know whether this is by the rules (before 3rd penalty, he warn goalkeeper not to do the same, but to stay on the line!!! All in all, one important mistake, at least 6-7 smaller mistakes (two of them important), correct RCs - for me not more than 7,8.

    2. I forgot: one possible penalty missed for Kobenhavn in the second half for handball (Zvezda player was slightly pushed and the ball hit his stretched arm or shoulder). In second overtime the ball touched Zvezda player's arm (just a small touch), but it was close distance, unexpected ball which went out and referee didn't even give a corner kick (it should be only corner kick - wasn't enough for PK).
