    2. Malmö-Kobenhavn is a derby of course, quite a big one I would say. Remember Fandel in Sweden-Denmark?

Nijhuis first as AVAR in England, than as referee in Spain. A match in England, like Arsenal, would have made more sense.

      Delete
    3. What happened with Attwell? Why is this his first UEL game in 8 years?

      Delete
    4. He had a shocking run of injuries for a very long time.

      Delete
    5. Attwell? In February 2012, he was demoted from the Select Group and therefore taken out from the FIFA list by English FA. The reason: poor performances in the English Premier League (IIRC, he was really good in his UEFA games). He has been promoted to Premier League again in 2016 and re-entered the FIFA list in 2018.

      Delete
    6. Attwell is in 2nd group not thrid

      Delete
    7. @Jaf

Indeed as referees from Germany, Spain, England, Italy & France are directly promoted to 2nd when they become FIFA.

      Delete
    8. A question of lexical choice: Attwell himself asked to be entered into the National List (who controlled Chship, L1 and L2 games) which amounted to a demotion - but he was not actually demoted.

Attwell was promoted much too fast (pushed by Elleray), and was struggling psychologically to handle his PL matches. He was making many publicly acknowledged mistakes having already been in the public eye after 'that' Watford - Reading game. If Riley refused his 'self-demotion' he would have ended his career.

I am really glad that UEFA gave him this 'second chance' - in my opinion he is far ahead of Tierney, Kavanagh re. international matches, and after a good performance in a hot Aris Thessaloníki - AEL Lemesós ELQ game, it is coherent with the performance principle too.

It is a great story of determination for a man who went from successful performances in his EL group stage matches eight years ago to then handling L2 games within months. Now through hard work he has now returned to a UEFA niveau - he is only thirty-six too, so still some time to reach sth big.

Is it true that when Attwell was demoted, he was very high on the EPL merit table?

No one talks about self-demotion, it is logically after such mistakes to be demoted. However, that not happens often at England, who knows! The first one at Vicarage road he was pushed by the assistant actually, though he had head role. This situation is a big upgrade on Brychs decision with Kisling.

  3. Big issues in Norwegian refereeing. Should Norway do like many other European FAs have done, and employ an external expert/consultant?

Former FIFA referee Svein-Erik Edvartsen comments: https://translate.google.no/translate?sl=no&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nordicbet.com%2Fno%2Fblogg%2Ffotball%2Feliteserien%2Fdommerkrise-losning%2F

    1. That Norway does not have as good referees as before is absolutely true.

We are missing a number one, and it has been a big generation change.

But Svein-Erik Edvartsen who writes here has an agenda against everything and everyone in the Norwegian FA. It was and still is a major conflict after he was fired from the job as a football referee.

Some referees (Hobber Nilsen, Moen, Hagen and the boss Hauge ++ receive a lot of criticism). In addition, he comes with many sources that no one knows who is. "A UEFA observer says ...." and "A referee in the Elite Series says ..."
In addition, there are many accusations that the referees only ref for the money.

So yes, things are not only good in Norway, but SEE has clear agendas.

      Delete
    2. I agree that Edvartsen has an agenda and some referrees are critisised unfairly on his blog.

However, Edvartsen himself was treated unfairly by the federation, he sued them to get his job back, and the federation paid for him to withdraw the court case.

Things are not OK in Norway - performance principle doesn’t exist and it is always certain from the regional leagues what referees will become top referees (pre-selected/protegés). There is correctly little meetings and development, only referees who get attention are particularly from Oslo and Bergen, who are friends with Hauge and referee committee members.

I am a 2nd level assistant referee, and much of what Edvartsen says, is true. But far from everything, he’s exaggerating a lot,. I feel I’m only refereeing for the money, and if I want to be promoted, I must be from Oslo or Bergen and friends of the management. When you referee with these preselected people, they don’t even care about their assistants from outside their home «krets» (local federation), because they know they will be promoted and we won’t! Once, one of this referrees was together with a mentor from the federation, and the (local) observer wanted to give him a bad performance, but the mentor pressured him to give 8.4!

I can say this because I had enough, now I retire after the season because its not motivating. But if I said this openly, people in the federation would push me out...

And its sad how the federation now use Edvartsen against people who criticise them! They think that if you're critical of the federation, you're either Edvartsen himself or pushing his agenda! What kind of transparensy is that?!

    1. Best match for Mateu, with very good matches also for De Burgos Bengoetxea (both teams are performing poorly and need to win ASAP), and IMO also Medié Jiménez. Celta and Athletic have the most disgusting players in terms of behaviour in LaLiga: Raúl García, Aritz Aduriz and Iago Aspas. They are always protesting, simulating, and Aspas has a particularly irritating (for me, at least) habit which is counting seconds with his hand raised when the opposite team's goalkeeper has the ball in his hands. So it will be a tough match for him, without doubt.

Regarding absences, Cuadra Fernández's and González González's are significant: the former missed a penalty for Valencia in their match against Getafe acting as VAR. Media reports say that he did not wait long enough to watch the appropriate angles, and according to Valencian press he is probably suspended.

González González had a polemic situation in Atlético - Real Madrid. According to Atlétic, Ramos said "la p*** que te parió" ("the who** who brought you to life") to an AR, but he was not sent off. In this case, I don't know if that is the cause for not being appointed or is just usual rotation. However, in both cases, their absence is suspicious.

What an incredible mistake from AR1 in Man UTD-Arsenal prior equalizing goal. Aubameyang was at least 2, if no 3 meters onside, AR1 was perfectly positioned but signaled offside. Very easy decision. What is more significant - he didn't wait for the action to be finished, but raised his flag prior the goal was scored (a second before). However, VAR confirmed the goal (probably ref whistled for offside after the goal was scored).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly what I wanted to write. Luckily, Kevin Friend did actually wait until the goal was scored, so VAR was able to intervene.

      Delete
    2. Super easy on replay of course. Not easy live with 80 000 spectators where you can't hear the ball being passed and the defender is running the opposite direction and the attacker towards the goal... Only problem was he raised it too early.

      Delete
    3. Allegedly, it's the instruction given to ARs in England to flag offsides immediately.

      Delete
    4. And also for refs to blow immediately in which Kelvin friend is a culprit then I ask why VAR is in use

      Delete
    5. Not when you read on their website:

"Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is not certain whether the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, the assistant should delay indicating the offence until the phase of play has concluded.

Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is certain the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, then the assistant should indicate the offence immediately.

In both of these situations the referee should wait to blow the whistle until the immediate phase of play has ended."

      Delete
    6. PGMOL changed their idea about this, but their initial instructions shows their refereeing 'ideology' is a joke.

Initially, they told the ARs to just flag like normal (because general football public was 'irritated' by delayed flag for clear offsides).
Though, if they weren't sure (ie. it was tight), they were to always keep the flag down, even after attack had finished.

As son of Eskil points out, PGMOL's vision is for the referees to control that by delayed whistles, with flags still going up. I really don't understand how cognitively lacking PGMOL can be to say that telling players to always carrying on playing if the AR flags, and instead waiting for a whistle, is fair on them and a good idea.

This has two major problems besides:
      1) There is no On-Field decision in case technology fails
      2) On an intrinsic motivation level that is unbelievably destructive, telling ARs not to even evaluate tight calls
-> With all the respect, PGMOL are idiots

Riley thought he had cracked it! With all the respect, only a muppet could believe that - and it shows how little attention PGMOL paid to other VAR projects, instead they focused on the medial resonance here on them.

Now the instruction is more-or-less the same, but for tight situations ARs should wait-and-see as we are used to.

BUT this leads to cognitive problems, as ARs were still trained before the (pseudo) VAR project launched, they were told to make no difference to their technique. Hence, in the moments that require the greatest concentration, their minds can easily forget the new instructions, and it is a matter of time before we have a Kuĺbakoŭ case here amidst the confusion.

PGMOL's VAR project further shows that the PL complex in them is much too strong, and the organisation should be dissolved.

      Delete
    7. I’ll only recall that Kulbakov’s case was more complicated, there were 2 parts of the attack, and the assistant mistakenly signaled offside only after waiting for the completion of the first stage.

  11. Interesting situation for Mohammed Al-Hakim crew in Nur-Sultan in minute 77': a goal was disallowed for offside after having been originally allowed by AR2. Following a corner kick there was a touch by attacker in the middle of penalty area, then another teammate touched the ball on the line and he scored. Clear offside and I think AR2 had missed it because he was doing the contrary movement at that moment. After a first decision to allow it, when broadcaster was showing still replays, referee decided to disallow. This was very likely the result of "logical cooperation", when they realized that a player had touched the ball almost on the line, very likely they understood that he was in offside. It looked something like VAR, but of course it wasn't. I praise this decision, but for sure AR2 had to see that live.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think he just wasn't sure about the touch of the attacker. If you look at him, he doesn't move towards the midfield, he actually stays close to the corner, so I imagine he was basically asking the referee if he had spotted a touch of an attacker.
