  1. Wow......I think it's a good step forward for English referees...

    Good job by Rossetti...

    I think with this decision...
Will can see 2 English referees at euro...

Then Lawson,Tierney, attwell and cavanagh as Var...in Euro...

    1. Jaf, may I ask why you use an ellipsis instead of a full stop in end of every sentence? Nothing special but it's just a bit strange to be honest...

  2. Another big match for Taylor. I would dare to say that his spot at the Euro is already locked.

    Not impressed with his observer.

  3. István Kovács in Liechtenstein - Armenia.
In a game ended with a very surprising score, Kovács showed in my opinion overall a good performance. However, there are for sure some interesting points for improvement. The match was challenging, especially in second half when home team managed to score the 1-1 goal. Please find below some videos of the most interesting situations.

    YC for reckless tackle 10'
    https://streamable.com/j44ff
Referee started the game with a early YC, absolutely mandatory for the nature of the foul, as you can see.

    Possible second YC 22'
    https://streamable.com/bopcn
And some minutes later, the same player took a risk by committing this foul. In my opinion, it is still OK to whistle without booking but for sure a YC wouldn't have been 100% wrong.

    Offside call by AR1
    https://streamable.com/c9a0l
One can discuss about the opportunity to play advantage. Armenia in possession of the ball in an attacking action. However, difficult for referee to guess that a few seconds before.

YC for reckless use of arms 29'
    https://streamable.com/047ar
    Looks like a correct decision.

    Warning - 36'
    https://streamable.com/wlj41
YC for reckless tackle could have been issued but not 100%% mandatory if you ask me, so it is OK by referee to manage it in that way.

Possible YC and management, possible cooperation of FO 40'
    https://streamable.com/op24u
Interesting situation, YC was possible there, maybe not mandatory, however you can hear in the video somebody asking for "YC". I think it was Armenian coach, this foul happened right in front of him. Fourth official Ionuț Marius Avram with some chances to manage better this situation?

YC for reckless challenge - 48'
    https://streamable.com/cnnk5

YC for reckless tackle - 53'
    https://streamable.com/vd8m5
This one was very clear and mandatory.

Possible second YC - quite blatant holding
    https://streamable.com/bz6ov
In my opinion in this case one could say more YC than the previous possible second one for LIE player, because in this case it was a very blatant action. No matter the importance of the action, UEFA doesn't like this behavior by players. I think that this is very borderline, one small step more and this would have been a very clear second YC missed. I don't perceive this as 100% mistake, though.

Advantage to Armenia but then goal scored by Liechtenstein, possible YC - 71'
    https://streamable.com/0d9yo
I think good decision to give an advantage there (it went unlucky with LIE scoring but this was not referee's fault) but then YC should have been issued. Reckless foul by home-team player.

Situation inside the box - 90'+2
    https://streamable.com/3nn73
No replay. However, for sure one can back referee, not enough for a penalty.

YC for delaying the restart of the game - UB - management 90'+5
    https://streamable.com/z3znn
I think good decision by referee to book the player for his behavior, and then good management as well.

If you back the referee regarding the two possible second yellow cards, I think you have as result a quite good performance in an (unexpected) difficult game.
So, after Genk - Napoli in CL, the Romanian showed again some good skills before leaving for his FIFA Under 17 World Cup.
Assistant referees with some offside calls. For one of them you can read the specific analysis (27'). Mostly, the other ones were without replays, I could check only a correct one by AR2 in 79' and then also the ONSIDE before 1-1. However, expected level by both.

    1. For me actually 22' is a clearer YC than 67', because of the position of the foul.
In 27', I think, one can expect him to recognize the advantage.
Otherwise I agree with your analysis.
And UEFA apaprently was right to appoint a CL referee for that match - maybe LIE-ITA will also be more challenging for Treimanis than expected.

    2. Thanks for your opinions! About the appointments, for sure LIE - ITA will be easier in any case because both teams are without goals. Italy already qualified (also sure as Group Winner) and Liechtenstein out. I think that we saw names like Kovács and Treimanis for such games just because UEFA is carefully monitoring them!

    1. Correct for late, reckless tackle - good advantage too :)

    2. And he is close to stop the game because of racial abuse.

    3. I liked his communication with respect to the offside 10-15m inside the Bulgarian half (maybe 35 mins?)

  6. 75' in France - Turkey possible penalty for hanbdall, player from Turkey touched the ball at first by head than arm (it was very open). A whistle could have been possible, not sure whether Brych detected it at all or not. However, not a big deal: on the subsequent corner kick France scored 1-0. All will be happy there.

    1. I think because the deflection from the ball after it hit the head was only marginal, Penalty had to be given for me. Maybe „very clear and obvious“ like I wrote in my „own“
comment is a bit harsh but first I did not see that the ball touched the head as well

  7. In France-Turkey, Brych was very lucky but he deserves that due to a strong performance in general IMP. In 76‘ he missed a very clear and obvious penalty in favour of France (handball, arm as much outstrechted as possible). But after the following corner (given instead of penalty), France scored anyway and this missed handball won‘t matter anymore

  8. Maybe offside before 1-1 equalizer for Turkey? But I did not see the situation clearly.

    1. Not clear at all, replay can't help. We should trust AR1.

      Delete
    2. However, I noticed that before allowing kick off after the goal scored, Brych waited for a while. I didn't understand the reason, it looked like a VAR check but of course it wasn't! ;)

    3. @Marvin, Where is the ball?

    4. The Ball was free kick. But i have normal video on DAZN Germany : https://streamable.com/wk9lb

    5. *The Ball delivery was free kick.

  9. Artur Soares Dias with a very good performance. He was clearly prepared for the game and it showed.

The less said about Bognár the better. Inconsistent, seemingly not motivated at all and couldn't be bothered to do much more than whistle. Failed to deal with the foul number and some types of challenges, nearly no communication, bad positioning. Disputable penalty (handball) given, another one missed.

    1. I agree regarding Soares Dias, very well handled game. Indeed he looks relaxed during his matches but he knows when he has to intervene.

He should be fairly safe bet for EURO 2020.

    2. Especially because he is very good with VAR.

  10. IMO the handball incident in Brych's game was correctly evaluated by the German.

Defender deliberately plays the ball with his head and therefore the position of his arm doesn't matter.

"It is usually an offence if a player touches the ball with their hand/arm when the hand/arm is above/beyond their shoulder level (unless the player deliberately plays the ball which then touches their hand/arm)"

    1. I am with you there. Have you seen the penalty awarded against Ukraine by Anthony Taylor? Deflection via leg to hand. Would love to hear what you think of that.

      Delete
    2. Taylor's penalty decision and red card were criticized in all media in Ukraine, despite of Ukraine's win(

      Delete
    3. Again, perfect application of the LoTG. The defending player throws himself only to block a shot, his left arm unnaturally increases body surface and in such case the LoTG say that a deflection from other part of the body doesn't matter.

"It is usually an offence if a player touches the ball with their hand/arm when the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger [...] The above offences apply even if the ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from the head or body (including the foot) of another player who is close."

    4. Is there a video for Taylor's penalty?

  11. Maybe a bit OT, however, I have to say that UEFA should and must be very harsh considering the incidents in Bulgaria. It's not the first time we saw racist chants in UEFA competitions. In my view, considering that, UEFA from now on should clearly state that every single incident like that will lead to a ghost game in the next match. If racist incidents continue, points should be deducted or - as an ultima ratio - the (national) team should be expelled from the tournament. If UEFA does nothing, things like today will continue. I would like to particularly mention the Turkish team having saluted once again although UEFA has begun and still investigates earlier incidents. UEFA must act strictly now!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Show must go on and every federation has to be happy ;)

      Delete
    2. The Turkish salute is not racist. It is a perfectly acceptable form of freedom of expression. It is a celebration done many times before. Just because some countries dont agree with it politically doesnt make it "racist" and cannot be put in same boat as Bulgarian actions.

      Delete
    3. I would distinguish such cases by analogy with football, is there an offside position (i.e. slogans about the conflict inside or outside the country). There is no difference in these examples.

      Delete
    4. @Bgymn: I don't want to discuss politics on this blog. On my earlier post, I didn't want to say that these gestures are racist. However, it's a fact that UEFA still investigates because of the gestures that were shown in the previous match. If a national team decides to continue despite investigations persist, one must understand that as both, a provocation and contempt for UEFA's investigations.

  12. An important appointment from the AFC region:

DPR Korea - Korea Republic World Cup Qualifier game will be handled by Abdulrahman Al-Jassim.

Kick off is at 1030CET in Pyongyang, and I believe that Korean Central Television (N. Korean state television) will broadcast the match.

I can only wish the Qatari good luck for this 'special' geopolitical derby!

    1. I read, there would be no camera teams in the stadium, i.e. no TV broadcast.

    2. North Korea's games were never aired, indeed, I couldn't find any single broadcast for their matches at home. This time I think it will be the same.

    3. Indeed, I read that the match will not be broadcast in South Korea, but it is normal practise for the North to show their matches on state television.

Here is a full match record from their WCQ game with Lebanon last May:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syLjyI1OFP4

The logo in the top left corner is that of Korean Central Television.

Also I believe there was a move to better utilise sports as a means of propaganda - also bowing to the sport's popularity there - as a sports channel was set up a few years ago.

I will set that channel on stream record before I leave the house this morning, and I can only hope that: 1) it works 2) with obviously no schedule, the match will be shown on there at all

For anyone interested, link to the stream of that channel:

  13. Penalty in UKR - POR: in my opinion this is at referee's discretion. There isn't a clear answer if 100% correct or wrong.
I wouldn't have called it, because very harsh, but very likely it is OK according to guidelines for handballs.
