  1. So all Elite referees except Aytekin and the injured Kassai and Kralovec have been appointed on this double MD.

Georgia with two Italian referees today and on Tuesday - very unusual.
Strange to see a First Group referee in FAR-MLT.
Also not a great match for Treimanis (like Kovacs today).

  2. French FIFA referees list for 2020:

Willy Delajod new FIFA referee, replacing Rainville.
Interesting to see that Karim Abed, appointed by UEFA for El debut, is ranked as second-last in his country among FIFA referees.

    1. I find it more interesting, that the French observers managed to give the required marks to have their FIFA referees exactly ranked according to their UEFA status with only one exception (Abed)...

    2. I think said it often enough on here, but it's no surprise at all to see Abed down the bottom. Many controversial performances ever since he has got to Ligue 1 (the most famous one being the refusal of issuing a RC for SFP after OFR in PSG-Rennes in early 2019). EL debut for him was really surprising, I expected Brisard to do it (who was observed in the qualifiers by Jaap Uilenberg) and it was reported that he did very well.

This season he was in controversy due to a ridiculous RC given for SFP (backed by VAR!):
      => https://youtu.be/1TPFZrY8AtU?t=68

And he was VAR in the controversy in Brest-Rennes, refereed by Turpin. Turpin seemed to disallow a goal for Rennes, then allowed it, and was pressured by Brest players to make an OFR. Result: goal was (wrongly) disallowed IMO.

Delajod was an expected choice for FIFA list, a young and IMO really talented referee, very mature for his age. He's someone who has even potential to reach Elite group in the future. Rainville losing his badge after being demoted was expected.

    3. Expected and great to see Willy Delajod on the FIFA list. A very promising referee IMO.

  3. Sky Sports expert Ben Ransom about Bebek's performance yesterday:

    "It was very difficult situation.
This was big pressure for him, cause, dont forget, this is new protocol of UEFA, they're much stricter when it comes to racism.
I think Bebek was very good.
He applied new protocol pretty well . He listened Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane,he talked with Bulgarian players and we all knew what was going on.
As men in charge he had to be tough, there were 50 fans dressed in black that were problematic,an organization, pressure was enormous but Bebek kept his cool. "Ben Ransom said.

  4. It seems as SUI - IRL was in doubt for weather conditions.
Marciniak a few minutes ago confirmed that it will be played.

    3. Yes, thanks.
      Not a penalty for me.

    4. Yes.
Three good examples, where the new handball law provides clarity.

    5. Wrote that, before reading your comment, Chefren...
What are your arguments against it?

      Delete
    6. My reasoning is maybe too "complex" there, but I see a defender trying a save, without the touch by arm ball would have gone very far away without problems. But the touch allowed the opponents to re-gain the possess of the ball. It is impossible to think about a deliberate act. Of course if we only say "arm position", penalty is OK, but should we make the assessment so "easy"? It would be very harsh. In serie A occurred an incident this season in Lecce - Roma game, a defender touched by arm and it was a quite raised arm, but it happened after an attempt to save by his goalkeeper, VAR didn't intervene (I agreed). Sometime we should also "look beyond" the rules...

      Delete
    7. With the old rules, I would agree, that there are arguments for both sides.
But now, the unnatural arm position is sufficient and it is irrelevant, whether it is deliberate or not, I think.
And IMO it's good and desirable to have less grey areas. The defenders just have to learn to avoid such arm positions.

      Delete
    8. I totally agree with Philipp.

It's better to have clarity and some 'harsh' whistles than a mess where almost everything is in a grey area, in my opinion.

    9. The thing I don't like about Taylor's penalty is he took so long to think about it. So when he finally gave it, to the spectators it looked like he only gave it once Ronaldo starting protesting and running towards him.

  6. Jesús Gil Manzano handled the Finland - Armenia game without bigger problems. He sorted out cards when everyone expected them, solved a player-player conflict very well, and as we know is an amazing athlete. But his disciplinary control did not convince me, borderline SPAs went without warning, missed recklessly carted out elbow - and when warnings were given they were too 'chatty' and lacking a stepped approach.

Today I saw an Elite athlete but not an Elite referee.

    1. Your last sentence is exactly what I think about him.

Del Cerro Grande for example is an Elite athlete AND also a Elite referee

      Delete
    2. Agree, too much inconsistency with him and he has no clear line.
One match he gives away cards like candys, other match he is keeping them in his pockets.
He doesnt have a recognizable style(yet).

  7. 0-1 by Italy after an excellent advantage by Treimanis.
You must watch that, and then also YC after the goal scored.

  8. Wrong penalty desision in Romania-Norway. Bad desision by Madden. Never a penalty in my eyes.

  9. Penalty and Second YC for Ireland by Marciniak
in Switzerland. Unfortunately, there was no replay shown which makes it impossible to assess the situation. Maybe a replay will follow some time...

    1. Btw penalty for handball which blocked a shot on goal. So if there was a punishable handball everything is correct; Irish played did not protest so I assume that it really was a handball but again, without replays not detectable for me

      Delete
    2. Really strange that no replay has been shown. How did you assess the possible handball of the irish defender in the first half? After the throw-in?

      Delete
    3. I don‘t think that it was a handball due to the deflection by the Swiss attacker from close range and in a quite unexpected manner. However the outstretched arm can be an argument for a penalty

      Delete
    4. It is reported that, in occasion of the penalty whistled, it was a straight RC.

      Delete
    5. It was a 2YC for the penalty, live it looked like a correct decision (blocking a shot on goal) and Marciniak was very alert. Also a more critical situation in 36’ (penalty appeal IRL).

But all in all, I dare to say something: Szymon Marciniak is back! Overall a convincing performance by the Polish, very self-confident in his decision making, disciplinary control was good and predictable! Detailed report to follow tomorrow.

      Delete
    6. Now finally I‘ve seen a replay in post match report: Crystal clear handball! So an even better performance by Marciniak

      Delete
    7. Very good to have Marciniak back again, it was a "long absence", to be honest, but our wait has been repaid.
Also, let me add, I like the fact that he is now more focused on Poland and UEFA, trips to Asia seem to have ended. This can help him even more.

  10. One can see why Turpin failed the theoretical tests this summer: corner kick, substitution is about to happen and a defender (from Sweden, who were winning at that point) is substituted. He lets him leave the field of play by the middle line instead of through the closest point, which would have been the goal line. The player leaves the field of play walking and wasting time.

IMO, very good half from Turpin, and unsatisfactory card management IMO in the second. I'm from Spain, so not entirely partial, but I think Sweden should have got at least a card earlier for persistent infringement. Last YC (Berg) is OK, but a RC would not have been wrong either for me: kicking an opponent when the ball was already away.

    1. But at least we made it ;)

That Romania-Sweden match in November will be terrifying. I wonder who will UEFA appoint for that match...

    2. Rocchi and Skomina are the ones that come to my mind.

      Delete
    3. Cüneyt Çakır is the man for such games.

      Delete
    4. Chefren, I was going to ask where I could bet for Cüneyt Çakır to be appointed for that game! :D

      Delete
    5. I would say Kuipers for ROU-SWE (and Cakir for NIR-NED).

      Delete
    6. Althoug, I must say that based on what I have seen in last few matches, I am impressed with Makkelie's calmnes in high pressure situations. For this time my guess would be Cakir, but in the future I see Makkelie as the "man for such games" as Chefren said ;)

  11. @Jonas: Exactly my thoughts, yes. Grey area but better not to whistle.

@Stake: I saw a good performance too, but if you speak of predictable decisions: I would have preferred a YC in 1‘ for illegal use of arm or at least a very clear talk to the player. Because the irish players didn‘t stop to use their arms in that way and Marciniak had to punish the same incidents later with YCs.

  13. SWITZERLAND - REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
    Referee: Szymon Marciniak (Poland)

Crucial match for both nations in Geneva, where this game was played under bad conditions (I dare to say that some parts of the pitch looked like a battlefield before kick-off). It was Szymon Marciniak, Poland’s Elite Group referee, who was given this huge task, which I thought he solved quite well.

A couple of key-match incidents must be rewatched more closely:
=> penalty appeal SUI for handball (36’): after a corner, IRL6 gets the ball on his right arm, which is outstretched. Natural instinct would be penalty. Marciniak decided to play-on. If we look closer at the replays, one can see that the ball is deviated by the chest of IRL6. According to Law 12, this is NOT PUNISHABLE, since the ball is coming “directly from the player’s own head or body”. Difficult decision, but rewatching the replays, I think NO PENALTY is the correct call.
=> penalty to SUI for handball (76’): no replays were provided by the broadcaster during the game, but live it looked like a clear handball by IRL2, who blocked a shot on goal and who correctly was sent off on a 2YC (having been booked for a confrontation in the first half). Marciniak was very alert in that situation, well done.
=> potential advantage before 2-0 (90+3’): Irish defender pulls the shirt of Swiss attacker (which normally should be whistled and punished with a YC), Marciniak lets play continue, ending in the Swiss scoring their second goal. While Marciniak does not make the advantage signal (did he simply forget it?), he was close to the situation and I do believe he saw it and assessed it and decided to continue play: in that case, I have to praise the Pole for his EXCELLENT reading of the situation, well well done!

Foul detection and disciplinary action was pretty good in the entire game:
    => in total 6 YC (32 - 2 for confrontation, 33’ - illegal use of arms, 47’ - reckless/SPA, 55’ - SPA, 66’ - reckless/illegal use of arms) have been issued in this match and 1 2YC (as mentioned before).
=> Good management of the confrontation in 32’ between SUI10 and IRL2, Marciniak tried to separate both players and I had the feeling that he wanted to solve this without cards. As neither of both players were interested in stopping, Marciniak decided (correctly) to caution both players here. Good decision!
=> Only minor factor would be a possible missed 2YC to IRL13 in for a what could have been assessed as a reckless stamp (71’).

Both assistant referees executed their duties on expected level, the cooperation between them and the referees was impeccable throughout the entire game.

In this conclusion, I repeat what I already said yesterday: Szymon Marciniak is back! Yesterday, I saw the motivated, alert and self-confident referee that has impressed previously in matches like ROM-POR, PSG-BAR or IRL-DEN and no longer the one from matches like TOT-JUV, PSG-LIV or BAR-LYO. Having performed already performed well in BRU-LIN and GAL-PSG this season (where it was reported that the “old Marciniak” returned partly), I think SUI-IRL is the confirmation that he’s fully back to his capacities. I hope he can continue to perform like this, because this is the type of referee who can handle very big clashes, up to a Champions League Final in the near future! I wish him and his team all the best!

  14. Andris Treimanis, just some situations from his game. The final score says everything but here the most interesting incidents.

2' Advantage and goal scored, thenYC (reckless)

    Very good management.

    23' Possible handball.
    https://streamable.com/9g95a
Interesting situation. Arm very close to body, but after the shot by opponent, the ball is blocked between arm and body. Is there a fault by defender? Would you whistle it?

28' Two penalty appeals in a row.
    https://streamable.com/z41ju (live sequence)
    https://streamable.com/0bwts (replay)
I think you can back referee there.

    49' Penalty appeal.
    https://streamable.com/oc9mf
This was perceived by Italian commentators as clear penalty live, unluckily it seems no replays were shown. Just to add, Belotti is a very difficult player to manage, very often he falls down easily in his serie A games and referees are in trouble. I can't be 100% sure in this case as well, and I wouldn't penalize Treimanis.

  15. And a situation from Armenia - Italy Under 21.
