  1. As expected, Guida makes his debut, after having been "prepared" for this game on last months.
However, very strange VAR appointments. Rocchi VAR: never seen that in UEFA. Furthermore while in London we have a referee and an assistant referee (Alassio), in Istanbul there are two referees.
Maybe it depends on Wednesday's appointments...

  2. Interesting, they have adopted the model used in Spain (at least) of REF+AR in VAR.

    1. And I'm glad about it.

Now there's at least one more referee available for EL games.

With the AAR system we had 3 referees (referee+ 2 AAR) for each CL game. With VAR system, until now there were 4 referees (referee + FO + 2 VAR).

      Delete
    2. Yes, it makes sense, if the AR has AVAR experience in his domestic league.
In Germany, it's a mixture since this season - both, 2nd division referees and 1st division assistants are used as AVAR in Bundesliga. Therefore Achmüller has 2 matches done in this role (Borsch has more, because he was as an exception already used in the last season after his WC appointments).

  3. I don't know why UEFA insists on Grinfeld. Clearly he is not Elite material but his name appears quite often on CL.

Expected debut for Guida but the match isn't easy. I hope that it goes well.

Lahoz with a big appointment on that group. Both teams have good chances to qualify. However, I can't understand why UEFA keeps on rewarding Melo Pereira. He has managed to even ridicule VAR in Greece. Many complaints from teams, many questionable decisions, but this guy keeps on getting European appointments. Baffling.

  4. I can't say much about his performances, but a CL debut after only 3 EL matches seems too early to me in general.
Also I feel, that Tottenham-Red Star is not so suitable for a debut considering the group situation. I expected an Elite referee there.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think, Zwayer is the first VAR from a country with a team in the same group. On MD 1 and 2 (and btw also at the WC), this was avoided.

  6. Sidiropoulos again with a low profile match in my opinion

    1. Always with low profile games... but at least in Champions League.

  7. I made reports / watched almost all the games he had before this appointment and after his EL debut one year ago.

    OK performances:
Viktoria Plzeň - Olympiakos Piräus, Porto - Krasnodar, England - Bulgaria, Georgia - Ireland.

    Some mistakes / controversial situations:
Ferencvárosi TC - FK Sūduva, Partizan - AZ Alkmaar.

I think that overall he could have performed better in order to justify his debut, but surely, the fact that he got so many assignments was a signal that committee had him on focus. You can then agree, or disagree, but I think you have to highlight everything, also the good performances.
About the short time and experience before getting CL debut: this was exactly the same for Massa, with a year of difference. Massa did what Guida now achieved from 2017 to 2018.
I can't deny that Italy need new names for CL and in a way this was a quite forced choice, but I don't think this was a very bad choice or something very undeserved. I can also add that in domestic games, Guida is doing quite well than the past and maybe this is also another reason of this choice. Massa, with a negative start of season, is getting now less games at international level.

Why committee doesn't want to appoint other Category 1 referees for their debuts in Champions League it is in my opinion a good question for discussion, but it can be absolutely independent from Guida's debut in CL. Now with Rosetti we saw many new debuts in both competitions and let's hope that for the future the names you have in mind, Marrkoo, will get their chances.

  8. Why Makkelie always have a match? As a VAR or REF. Smh

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He gets games as main referee on the pitch like other Elite officials. The fact that you see him more it is because he belongs to this very particular "category" of Elite referees also VAR expert. I would say he is the only one belonging to this category. So, having this big trust by committee also as VAR (and I would say justified), you see him in other games.
This is not the same for other UEFA Elite officials who don't work (at least not too often) as VAR in international games.
One could mention Zwayer as example (the German is also VAR expert as well, and Elite referee) but Makkelie is better referee if you ask me.

      Delete
    2. Because he obviously is considered as one of the most trusted referees in Elite category currently. And rightly so.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Chefren and Marcello and would go further - Makkelie is one of the best referees in the world!

      Delete
    4. At moment I would consider Makkelie strong candidate for EL final. However, there are also other names.
About Champions League final, it will be very interesting to see, without Spanish teams, I'm quite sure Mateu Lahoz will get it. In case of Spanish team, the situation could become difficult for committee, given that Rocchi will retire internationally on December.
What are your ideas about CL final referee, apart from Mateu?

      Delete
    5. Indeed,it is difficult this year. Marciniak is a strong candidate. I think Makkelie and Turpin are big candidates too

      Delete
    6. Following UEFA trends to appoint a very experienced referee to CL final, there are three candidates for that: del Cerro Grande, Mateu Lahoz and Orsato.

The first 'young' candidate is Turpin at the moment, IMO.

      Delete
    7. I agree with the mentioned names and would add Orsato to that list.
I don't see Mateu as the big favourite though (without Spanish teams). Rather an open race at the moment between Makkelie, Mateu, Marciniak, Orsato and Turpin. With some chances for del Cerro Grande and Hategan as well.

      Delete
    8. I would add Taylor as a candidate for EL final. Probably he is in the best form among all referees at the moment. He is equally excellent in Premier league and in European matches and has big experience officiating important matches every week. Maybe too early for him, as he is "young" Elite ref, but it is obvious that he will get important matches this year, one of semifinals probably.

      Delete
  9. One thing to add: IMO there are no other obvious candidates for a debut after Jovanovic and Gözübüyük due to the high number of last year's debuts.
For everyone else, one could also ask, whether they really deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree to the letter with Marrkoo - Guida is far from ready for a CL début.

It should be said honestly - it's impossible to go anywhere in UEFA (and refereeing generally) without being someone's protégé, without connections.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I really struggle to find a convincing name for a CL debut:
On the one hand, referees like Ivanov, Petrescu, Dabanovic, Letexier, Peljto have been in good form recently, but still are lacking in experience. E.g., none of them did get even 3 EL appointments last year. Debuts are possible, but IMO too early (as for Guida...)
On the other hand, we have e.g. Boyko and Stefanski with more experience, but they are not really the future due to their age.
Someone with experience and a younger age would be Lechner. Also he got a good game on EL MD2 - so maybe he has good chances.
Who do you think, would deserve a CL debut this season?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think that a referee who handled both Milanese derbies last season as well as a Roman derby this season in Italy's Seria A is also ready for a debut in the UCL group stage.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Personally I think that Makkelie really deserve all these engagement; he is demonstrating since at least a couple of years to be one of the most skilled and reliable referees in Europe.
Candidates for CL final are IMO not easy to choose this year.
I would see on top of all A. Mateu Lahoz, but, as we know, his attendance is strongly dependent form Real and Barcellona presence (easy to have them).
2nd choice would be Turpin due to his enormous grown.
In case of simultaneous presence of French and spanish teams, decision will be difficult: Marciniak had a very good grown in the past but it seems to have lost his good way recently; Makkelie has definitively overpassed the polish but it could be too early with the risk to burn him; Honestly I don't see Orsato as strong candidate, good but not at the level to manage a CL final; Same for Collum and Hategan; so why not Cakir ? I know that it seems not so good to make a double but Cakir has been in last 10 year very special.
So, in place of Rosetti, I would do:
CL Final Mateu Lahoz or Turpin or Cakir
El Final Turpin or Makkelie or Hategan

    OFF TOPIC:
    one question
Will VAR be used at Olympics game too ?

  14. Ali Palabıyık with CL debut in Leipzig.

  15. Sorry I think Marciniak is better Than Turpin

    1. I'm interested thanks. I love Aussie country.
King is not FIFA referee, good achievement for him. NO VAR in the final match ? Still AAR ?

      Delete
    2. This is my question as well, with VAR available, AARs in a final?

      Delete
    3. The FFA cup utilises the AAR system in the semi finals and final. VAR is not used in the cup. I think possibly because like the FA cup in England it would be difficult to have VAR at amateur football grounds?? I don't really know tbh.
On King, he is an exceptional referee who did an A-League semi final last season. Was promoted to full time for this season and was part of AFC's project future. I believe he has a big future ahead of him in the years to come.

    4. Thanks for the answer.
On another note, congratulations to Matthew Cream for his impressive career: one of the most experienced FIFA assistant referees ever (almost 20 years).
I remember him in Breeze's trio when they were candidates for 2006 WC.

  18. OT about VAR in Serie B. Many Italian internet news portals citing Mauro Balata (president of the league): 'The hope, albeit with due prudence, is to have it [VAR] for all intents and purposes at least for the playoffs and playouts so as to be able to start at full capacity from next season.'
One of these articles: https://bit.ly/2pDd2dj (in Italian). The news came out a bit under a week ago.

    1. Yep, great decisions from Mateu.
My only question is how can goalkeeper protest to that???

      Delete
    2. Agree. Right decision by Mateu Lahoz.

    3. I can not believe that such experienced goalkeeper would do such a foul. Great call by Lahoz.

      Delete
    4. I think that the VAR graphics shown was wrong.
"Potential penalty check", but the penalty had been already whistled by Mateu. It was just a confirmation.

      Delete
    5. Excellent so far from Mateu.

    6. Good game overall and very well spotted PK. Unfortunately, with his unique style as well (but we are all used to it by now so... :))

What i didnt like is him never showing "get up" "no hand" "no foul" gestures with hands. Of course, it is truism that if nothing is whistled game plays on, but in some situations it really makes the communication better and this way he sometimes looks a bit "autistic" (sorry for the expression, but its the most precise to describe this)

      Delete
  20. What happened in 63' in Madrid looked to be a penalty, Soares Dias didn't whistle but he was far away from the scene. Defender fell down and then he impeded attacker in his action. Penalty would have been better decision than play on, however maybe not VAR stuff...

    2. Good argument but for sure Soares Dias couldn't make such detailed assessment...

  21. Another good performance of Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz. Pyatov's foul brilliantly spotted (either by him or by his colleague). Keeping the unique style we all know: friendly push in the back of a player's head or finger-poking a player's chest. :)

Clear Red Card for Serious Foul Play - what will Pinhiero's argument be in the debrief for not intervening:

      Lack of force? Please...

      Delete
    7. Clear RC. I can't understand why VAR didn't intervened.

      Delete
    8. Arguments against RC:
      - touches the ball first (i.e. tackle was clearly targeted at the ball)
      - foot slides along the leg (i.e. impact on the shin / probability for injury is not that high)

      Argument against intervention:
      - Grinfeeld had a clear view on the incident

      Delete
    9. Red card would be the better decision. My opinion is that Grinfeld made a mistake but not a clear and obvious one. So Pinheiro was correct to not intervene because, as Philipp S mentioned, there are arguments aggainst a RC.

  26. Offside situation well solved by Makkelie's team. VAR confirmed that 1-2 goal by Bayern was regular. I think either Lewandowski was ONSIDE or the previous touch by head was by defender (not clear even after replays). Congratulations to Dutch team.

    1. The only argument for a YC would be the hitting point.

But for me it's a case of SFP.

      Delete
    2. Hopefully we will have a better quality video soon.
However, it is sure that one can see excessive force in this challenge.

      Delete
    3. Having rewatched both situations from Grinfeld and Sidiropoulos, I must say that both are for me straight red cards, both cases of SFP.

Grinfeld, there can be a discussion about the intensity of the contact (that will very likely explain the lack of VAR intervention), but IMO a clear RC all-day long.

Especially in the situation for Cuadrado, I would expect a RC: what is the intent of Cuadrado flying into his opponent at high speed, taking off with two feet. No way that this is intended to become a clean tackle, this foul had the only intent to hurt the opponent and nothing else. Clear red card, clear SFP, I think there cannot be any debate here IMO.

I tend to repeat myself, but I get angry when I see that those situations don't get punished properly, especially when VAR is there. At grassroots, when I show a RC for challenges like that, I tend to lose authority because players will compare me to what happens currently on international football. I'm sorry, but this trend has to stop immediately!

      Delete
    4. There was another situation in Sidiropoulos's game where Cristiano Ronaldo attacked a goalkeeper with studs into goalkeeper's head and wasn't even booked. But I'm not able to provide a video of that incident.

      Delete
    5. Clear YC missed by Sidiropoulos in that case.

  32. Still not even a single OFR in all games, and not even a correction for offside, correct me if I'm wrong. I must say that when we are close to end the first "half" of group stage, CL officiating is on a good level.
There are for sure situations that can be discussed, and I would mention first of all some possible SFP, but I like the guidelines given by Rosetti, very clear. Referees are not afraid with VAR presence, they officiate the game as it should always be.
Still very positive notes from almost all the officials. Some of them are really "building" their chances to officiate a final.
Let's see how it will continue tomorrow and on next matchdays.
So far I think Rosetti can be satisfied.
Also good debut for Guida, I guess, I didn't watch the game, but given the score and the low number of fouls (only 1 YC), I assume everything went without troubles.

    1. I think Buquet did an OFR in the first ucl game Inter - Slavia Praha but didn't change his decision.

      Delete
    2. You're right, Nathan.

There was an OFR for RC suggested by Letexier and turned down by Buquet in Inter-Slavia Praha.

So there's been an OFR but not a single correction of a previous decision by VAR, IIRC.

    3. I think there were two OFR on MD1:
Zwayer in Salzburg: RC -> YC
Taylor in Paris: Handball prior goal

      Delete
    4. Yes I meant in yesterday's games, thanks. I remember that in previous matchdays there were some OFRs, however a very small number if compared to all games played. The one made for Buquet was in my opinion without any logic.

  34. I have a question for you guys about yesterdays penalty awarded by Lahoz against Donezk. First of all, incredibly well spotted on the field, that was very alert!

My question is about the issued YC. Shouldn‘t it be a RC? In my opinion, Piatov is soing much more than just pushing the striker away or holding him. He‘s blocking his leg and meanwhile turning his upper body, what can cause very critical injuries for the knee. I think he‘s doing that willingly, there is an argument for excessive force here... But probably not clear enough to be VAR-stuff.

    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Definitely not a clear and obvious error to not show a RC, so VAR correct to not intervene. IMO YC is a fully correct decision.
