We can continue here as the previous discussion has reached the maximum of comments allowed. I apologize for this issue.
ReplyDeleteShould the fourth official have said that "Dark" player instead of that "black" player? Yes he should have. It was a mistake in wording. But this is not racism. An apology by the fourth official for unintentionally causing offence should have been enough to move on with the game. And Chefren, for the 5th time, he couldn't have used his number, it wasn't visible. Everyone on the bench was wrapped up in the same dark jackets.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not. The insinuation that saying “dark” instead of “black” is less racist is revolting. His skin color shouldn’t have been mentioned at all.
DeleteJack, in your opinion, is any mention of someone's skin color racist? I just simply don't understand why saying "the black guy" should be considered racist. It's not a slur, it's not insulting or demeaning anyone based on their skin color, what is wrong with it? Please explain because I don't understand.
DeleteAh. This is really difficult for me. By trying to defend someone who made a mistake you're now inferring I am also racist. I am a big supporter of black lives matter. I fully support all these groups. This is getting ridiculous. I will say no more.
DeleteI strongly agree with you Jack. To answer your question Anonymous: YES. Every reference to someone's skin colour is racist. It actually sickens me how many people defend something that is clearly racist on this blog. Just the fact that in a different language the use of the skin colour might not be recognized does not make it less racist. It is how Demba Ba explained it on the pitch: you don't need to use the skin colour to refer to a person.
DeleteThe connotation here is a huge issue. The fourth Official was clearly mad at the player and in addition used the player skin color to describe him to the referee. If FO was not angry, would he have used the skin color? Seems demeaning to me
DeleteThanks Marko to explain us the superb « indigenist » theory...
DeleteMarko23, I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree. You have stated clearly that you think any mention of someone's skin color is racist. But I don't think you've explained well enough *why* or *how* it is racist. The only small thing is you've said "you don't need to use skin color to refer to a person," yet I don't see how this logic follows. You also don't NEED to use a name to refer to someone, that doesn't mean it is offensive to use their name. Could you elaborate on your reasoning here?
DeleteThank you for asking Anonymous.
DeleteFor me it is racist because by referring to someone by his skin colour, for me it feels like you define that person by the colour of his skin. For example, I'm a gay man. If someone would refer to me as 'that gay guy' I would feel very uncomfortable because it would feel like that person defines me by my sexual orientation only.
This referring to race and sexual orientation is really different from for example a name because it is something you can't choose to be. So, therefore referring to a person by his race, skin colour, sexual orientation only is discrimination. One should therefore at all times avoid to refer to someone only by one of these characteristics because it can be felt as racist or homophobic.
And if it is felt like that, we should never condemn or blame the victim, but we should always be supportive, since we can never feel what it is like to be at the receiving end of this.
Lastly, maybe Coltescu did not intend to be racist. But by referring to Webo as 'that black guy' that is actually what he did.
Stieler missed a penalty and now OFR.
ReplyDeleteVery clear handball.
Correct OFR and penalty decision. Maybe (or likely) missed 2ndYC? Looked clear on replays but I can imagine it was not easy to detect on the pitch. AR1 could have helped most, I guess.
DeleteNo YC there is correct IMO, because the promising attack was not stopped - Juventus even hit the post afterwards.
DeletePenalty to Juventus by Stieler because deliberate handball by VAR intervention
ReplyDeleteCorrect decision by Stieler
DeleteCorrect penalty with no YC by Stieler after OFR.
ReplyDeleteStieler today gives a very weak impression, also when having to face protest, but surely his previous performance had been excellent.
ReplyDeleteStieler is maybe nervous because big game. Who know?
DeleteI agree that Stieler does not show his best performance. However, it's not easy to handle matches like this (and especially with key players like Messi and Ronaldo). I insist that the 'key incident' of the match was the wrong penalty in first half. Unfortunately it was a bad start into the match and it's difficult to find the way back on the right track.
DeleteAs I said previously in the blog, Uefa needs replacement for Aytekin, it is areason for such good appointment for Stieler, he is not strong referee. UEFA give him big advance. Perfomance in Liverpool and in Benfica prove my opinion
DeleteI don't think Stieler's promotion will be stopped due to one not so good performance, expecialy when all previous performances were good.
Deletein the end in such a highclass clash nobody talks about the referees. thats all that uefa wants --> no more trouble...first penalty was very soft but supportable, handball was clear, good intervention by var, took very long IMO, maybe the internet connection in nyon is not so fast :-) standing with the players was not so good as always, but for a newbie like him i think all in all it was ok...
DeleteHi guys, does anyone know why Felix Zwayer Is not refereeing neither in european cups, nor in german leagues lately?
DeleteIf you have group of 10 black guys and 1 white, and you need to send off white guy, I am pretty sure that 99% of people would say "this white guy". Would it be racist? It is true that Coltescu should avoid it, but come on, nothing racist here!!!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Wanted tomwrite it but you came first.
DeleteExactly! Great comment!

DeletePlease remove this idiocy from the blog.
DeleteDon’t be racist with idiots Jack, please. ;)
DeleteHey Jack, first of all respect please. I am not insulting anyone, I am sharing my own opinion, like everyone can do.
DeleteI totaly agree. They are just going to far with this racist things. Support to team Hategan from Belgrade.
Delete+1
DeleteThe extreme leftist ideology we experience more and more nowadays is unbearable for me.
+1. This was all a giant misunderstanding and overreacting like this does not do any good for the cause against racism.
DeleteThis year UEFA is doing cabaret when delegating referees to matches
ReplyDeleteAnyone who’s not black and repeating the “n-words” that are used to racistly describe black players is being racist simply by repeating them.
ReplyDeleteAssuming that the reports that Coltescu said something akin to "the black guy" in Romanian, frankly I don't see anything wrong with that personally. Just because it has to do with skin color does not mean that it is racist... In what way is this demeaning or insulting to somebody based on their race? It seems like it was a simple way for Coltescu to identify the team official, same as identifying someone as "the blonde one" or "the tall guy", nothing more malicious than that.
ReplyDeleteAt worst, it is a case of poor communication, far far far less severe than an accusation of racism.
If I would guess, I think the Turkish team honestly thought at first that Coltescu had said a racial slur, and this explains their heavy reaction. But I can't understand why, after having this misunderstanding explained to them, they do not accept that it was a misunderstanding, and instead double down on their serious accusations... very concerning to see this. The fourth official obviously did not say anything with mean intentions, so why can't people accept the misunderstanding, apologize to each other, and move on?
Because what you find polite and not insulting, for other people can be insulting. Simply said. You can't force people to accept a point of view, if feel that they are victims of racism, it is up to personal discretion. Coltescu should have avoided that, that's the only thing we can say.
DeleteOn the contrary, I think UEFA should force them to continue the match or give a win to PSG. It was a misunderstanding and it is very clear, and you cannot arbitrary say what is racist in the official criteria like this, it cant be a personal thing. These things have to be solved later, reporting the referee and then see what really happened and issue sanctions if needed. This is not the way.
DeleteThat is a ridiculous take.
DeleteThe question is not whether the Turkish bench thought it was racist, but whether that opinion is justified. And I don't think it is justified.
DeleteIf someone says they find offense to a referee identifying them as "the blonde guy," should the referee be accused of hate speech for that? Of course not, because we all can judge for ourselves that the referee didn't say anything hateful. Just because someone complains does not mean they are right, especially when their complaint stems from a misunderstanding caused by a language barrier.
Avoidable, absolutely. But again, accusing someone of poor communication is very different from accusing someone of racism, I must make that very clear. But since the original accusation was for racism because of the language misundestanding, this is all the media will latch onto...
In English, the same words would also be racist. The language barrier doesn’t matter.
DeleteSorry not. Black isn’t racist in English as « noir » isn’t in French.
DeleteAs a descriptor of a person, it is if it’s unnecessarily used, especially in a negative situation
DeleteAgree with this. Completely. Wrong communication isn’t racism.
DeleteGame in Paris was planned to be resumsed at 22:00 but UEFA has now changed communication, "further informations to follow".
ReplyDeleteI can guess in these moments Turkish team and match officials are trying to explain their point of views. I just hope that something can be solved.
DeleteLatest information is that AVAR Mariani would replace Coltescu. PSG were warming-up, Baskasehir players refuse to play as long as Coltescu will become AVAR. However, UEFA statutes say that there has to be an AVAR. Very unclear whether the match can continue.
I think that Coltescu never worked with VAR...
DeleteRef_1707
DeleteAs I said in the comment bellow :)
All support for Hategan and his team, including Coltescu! No racism here, just unlucky circumstances and choice of words.
ReplyDeleteLast news is that they will continue with a different 4th official. First they wanted to change VAR (or AVAR) and Coltescu, but now turkish team refused that option. Waiting for further news.
Very good first half for Frankowski and Mateu Lahoz
ReplyDelete‘negru, negro, dark’ it doesn’t matter which word you ıse, if you discriminate one person because of his skin color this is racism. instead of legitimize this disgraceful behavior, you have to condemn it.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteSo black person is racist in English for you ?
DeleteHow did the fourth officer discriminate against Webo? He wasn't sent away because of his skin color, was he?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThis is only his fault, not good manegement from his side
DeleteIf I were Coltescu I would at first apologize to all players, then I would ask for continuing the game without my presence.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't accept that. UEFA Delegate proposed them that Coltescu go on VAR Room and one referee from there come on the pitch. Neither team wanted that.
DeleteThat is very unfair to Coltescu, he didn't mean to insult anyone. The criteria for racism has become ridiculous.
DeleteIf you have more pigment than others then you are darker and dark= black. Less pigment means brighter=white. Anybody who claims saying the colour of someones skin is racist should look up that word.
Delete‘negru, negro, dark’ it doesn’t matter which word you ıse, if you discriminate one person because of his skin color this is racism. instead of legitimize this disgraceful behavior, you have to condemn it.
ReplyDeleteAgree!
DeleteSchoked to see so much acceptance for this behaviour on this blog
If you get insulted because someone said something like that in 2020 you must be so brainwashed. You're black and someone says this black guy done soemthing you would be insulted????
DeleteThis is « black » so don’t disform facts please. Is this word racist in English?
DeleteSeems like the game is postponed
ReplyDeletePSG-BAS definitely suspended. The match won’t be finished today.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Dutch tv BAS didn’t accept the swap of the FO and VAR of their role. They wanted the FO to leave the match.
PSG left the decision to BAS. They accepted the swap only if and when BAS it also accepted.
Istanbul want referee to leave the stadium
ReplyDeleteI think is better doing this, this moment.
DeleteI think a Ligue 1 ref from Paris can be FO or AVAR
And only Frappart from Paris is free. Millot is VAR in Rennes
DeleteStieler awarded a correct penalty but AR2 raised the flag for offside. Good decision, AR2 had to wait in order to make a check by VAR possible...
ReplyDeleteI feel terrible for Hategan... he has been through so much in his career. Such a talented referee, but three times now has run into absolutely tragic circumstances on the biggest stages. I feel very sorry for him, one of my favorite referees.
ReplyDeleteI hope this will not effect Hategan. This is not a mistake of him...
DeleteAnother VAR intervention in Barcelona, offside to disallow a goal.
ReplyDeleteI didn't understand Demba Ba what he did to receive red card.
ReplyDeleteNothing to do with Demba Ba. It was Pierre Webo, asst coach.
Deleteok, thanks
DeleteMissed offside by AR1 prior the 0–4 for Juve. It's simply a night to forget for Stieler and his crew. He is a strong referee and he will get some more opportunities to show that.
ReplyDeleteYwes this can happen sometimes, no worry. This game was not important, both teams already qualified.
DeleteOf course, we are all human being. But one cannot say that it is a great night for refereeing. I wish I could say that. Too many weak performances this evening.
DeleteMissed foul before penalty and imo very soft penalty call from Lahoz at LEI-MUTD
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion soft penalty by Mateu Lahoz to Manchester United, but supportable by VAR.
ReplyDeleteA clear mistake for me. First holding by the attacker and then a normal contact.
DeleteBut if Lahoz whistled this kind of Soft penalty he Had to whistle foul before penalty
Delete@Chefren
DeleteHow can be supportable for VAR?
This isn't gray area
Deletethe second wrong penalty against a german competetor in two weeks :D
DeleteJoke penalty for Man United by Lahoz. ManU player just ran into Leipzig defender
ReplyDeleteLet's hope for a better day tomorrow. Nightmare in Paris, not the best night for Stieler, even worse for Lahoz (now with a doubtful penalty given). I hope today's matches are over soon.
ReplyDeleteVery soft penalty by Mateu Lahoz and possibly a foul before the penalty offense. Both are supportable, I think, but surely not what one would have expected of the situation.
ReplyDeleteNow wrong penalty for Manchester United IMO, too soft, normal fight for the ball anywhere on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, completely wrong penalty by Mateu, the foul prior was way clearer and nothing done.
ReplyDeleteToo many soft penalties this evening. Now also controversy 3-2 by United.
ReplyDeleteToo many soft penalties this season I would say....
DeleteWe had simillar situation at the end of last season and referees that whistled aome soft penalties were no appointed anymore later (e.g. Zwayer, Turpin) and I realy expected UEFA instructed referees not to whistle soft contacts as penalties... But I was obviously wrong...
Looked a bit like handball. VAR checked of course but doubts remain. I don't want to be repetitive, however, very unconvincing night by Lahoz. Not just speaking about the penalty decision but rather about game management itself – which is maybe even worse than single decisions.
DeleteBefore the second goal of Utd, ball hit Maguire's hand. It is not deliberate but creates an advantage.
DeleteUnbelievable mistake by VAR! Absolutely unacceptable
Delete@referee12
Deleteon the other hand, makkelie was appointed once more after RBL PSG.
No active action by leipzig defender. Joke penalty by Lahoz
ReplyDeleteLahoz has changed the game. Poor performance from him.
ReplyDeleteParis - Baskakehr will not continue
ReplyDeleteis there video oh the penalties ?
ReplyDeleteLahoz penalty: https://streamable.com/j7truk
ReplyDeleteWhat a mistake, wow... The only way this would even resemble a pen would be if Greenwood would be the defender, and Leipzig in attack...
This can't be foul. Normall contact. So, no penalty
DeleteThis was even softer than penalty called by Stieler in Juve-Barca.
DeleteThat was not even soft but just plain wrong.
DeleteI think missed handball by Lahoz team just prior to ManU 2nd goal.
ReplyDeletewhat is lahoz doing tonight? he is out of his depth. two crucial mistakes in twı machester goals.
ReplyDeleteLets just hope that Leipzig wins, so no debate will be needed later. Very doubtful refereeing, not his usual criteria and sense of the game.
DeleteUEFA should make a better selection of fourth officials!
ReplyDeleteI would like to give my detailed opinion about the much discussed incident in the Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) - İstanbul Başakşehir FK (TUR) game refereed by Ovidiu Alin Hațegan (ROU) with Costantin Coltescu (ROU) in the fourth official's role.
ReplyDeleteBut before that, I feel the need to remind about the importance of not sharing doubtable, unconfirmed, emotional and misleading information that isn't based on facts (I would say, also logic) in this time when information has a huge role in every aspect. I urge everyone to refrain from publishing comments with unconfirmed information (if you don't specify that the information may not be true), emotionally dramatic phrases that do not convey any constructive meaning or simply constitutes political propaganda without arguments. Thank you!
Getting to the point, first of all - in no possible way can the actions of the 4th official be viewed as rasistic. I repeat - in no possible way. Why? Because rasism is discriminating an individual based on his rase or abusing him just because he is of different color. Did Coltescu do that? No way.
Next question - can the actions be viewed as abusing? The answer to this question is also no. Why? Because he didn't say a single swear word. If the information that Romanian readers provided is correct, he said 'black (person)'. 'Black' is a name of a color, not a swear word. If someone perceives it as swearing, it's his issue. The 4th official didn't swear, he used the individuals (in this situation) unique identifier - his skin's color (if all other players were black and one was white, he would probably accordingly say 'the white (player)' and so on, same with, for example, hair etc.) to communicate with the referee (if the information I have isn't wrong; I'm quite sure it isn't.).
Next - did the fourth offical make a mistake by using this Romanian word? Yes. All what is happening now could be predicted, and , as an easy target, Coltescu should have preicted that and used other possible words because of this word's similarity to English 'nig*a'. But referees have to think about hundreds, hundreds of things during a game, they are basically asked to be like gods who do not make mistakes! Think of all the times when players have insulted referees and got a way with a yellow card. This time a fourth official makes a mistake (he didn't even insult!) and everyone goes nuts! It's crazy!
IMO Coltescu should not be appointed for a few rounds because of his unlucky word choice, but committees must understand that after some time this incident should be more or less forgotten, just as other mistakes if they aren't constant, and Coltescu should be allowed to develop on the international stage as he was until now.
+1
DeleteMy only worry is that for political reasons UEFA wont be brave enough to dismiss racism accusation. That said, we should be careful, as you said, because official interpretation and careful listening of the whole communication is yet to be done by the authorities. But according to the information we have, you described it perfectly.
+1
DeleteAgree on everything but it must be said - this was Coltescu's last UEFA match in any case, he's leaving the list in January to make room for younger Romanian referees.
DeleteBest comment of all time on this blog. Well done!

DeleteSome bloggers writed that Coltescu isn't FIFA two week already, that Romanian assosiation replaced him with other referee. Official informations?
DeleteTotally agree.

DeleteCompletely agree

Delete@ Whistle - It was annouced on 30 October by FRF President Răzvan Burleanu, that Sebastian Colțescu (43) and Marius Avram (41) will be replaced on FIFA list by Andrei Chivulete (33) and Marian Barbu (32).
+1
DeleteThis should be published in some big media imo
Agree with most of this! Whether this is already racism or not, is a complex debate - I think it is healthy to not assume one knows the right answer to this. That being said, I don't think Coltescu's poor wording is in any way an action that unveils him as a deeply reprehensible person whose presence makes a continuation of the match unbearable.
DeleteI do sincerely hope that this will not affect Hategan, who does not seem to be to blame here, and that he will get another big tournament!
+1 for Lewis :)
DeleteMateu Lahoz was poor in Dortmund and a week later today!
ReplyDeletePenalty from Salz-ManU https://t.me/REF_EX/4
ReplyDeleteThey are packing up in Paris, game will not continu tonight
ReplyDeleteStill no official info from UEFA about Paris game. Cameras are still active at stadium...
ReplyDeleteGame will continue tomorrow from 14th Minute with different referees. I am really sorry for Hategan.
ReplyDeleteMakkelie will be my guess then, if also Hategan is replaced.
DeleteI have doubts about the second MUN goal, but with the replays I've seen so far, I think the touch is with the head and so it is a regular goal.
ReplyDeleteThe penalty is supportable for me, but not the decision I would have made. However, the overall impression has not been so good tonight, with also minor mistakes. Let's hope he does better in the KO stage, or he might lose his last chance for the final.
Game will be resumed tomorrow, very likely with fully different officials. But it is not clear whether Istanbul will accept that.
ReplyDeleteAccepted, mentioned by CEO of Basaksehir team.
DeleteBasaksehir's CEO mentioned that they received full support from PSG, especially Mbappe.
ReplyDeleteColtescu said "ăla negru" which means "the black one". Webo understood "negro" which is (indeed) racist in other languages.
ReplyDeleteI repeat: Coltescu said "negru" (not racism in romanian language), not "negro".
Webo asked Coltescu: "Why you said negro ?". This was not the case, Coltescu didn't say "negro".
This is not racism and we should not see racism everywhere ! It's just a stupid behaviour of Webo and turkish team.
Thank you for repeating this 10th time. It's your point of view, but u have to respect all the other opinions.
DeleteCome on - not stupid behaviour of a referee but Webo and the team... Becoming ridiculous. Shouldn't be so difficult to asses. He doesn't need to use colour of his skin. So simple.
DeleteEspecially as an match official while your organisation is fighting against racism. You have to be more intelligant and avoid situations like this.
DeleteSaying that it was stupid behavior by Turkish team is simply unacceptable, petschovschi. But I know that you try always to impose your opinion to all people, you must also accept different point of views!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteOh my God, what a night. Very bad Mateu and Stieler, I'm so sorry, but today subpar performances.
ReplyDeleteAnd I strongly support Hategan. Bad luck for him. Very big achievement for him, with six matches in a raw in this group stage. But now... I wish him the best.
Why did Hategan not react after hearing this word? So, Basaksehir also dont want him..
DeletePrediction for new referee in Paris tomorrow?
ReplyDeleteI think Massa (if VAR are the same) or Oliver which is totally free. But maybe a debut or a first class referee because Leipzig game has aleeady been played. So also Jug can be appointed
DeleteImo someone elite... Maybe Orsato, dont know really.
DeletePesato had PSG-MUN Last week
DeleteYep, totally forgot abou that..
DeleteUnique situation, I dont know if we ever had this problem in history of refereeing.
Oliver, Dias ...
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
DeleteHonestly, do you believe that Stieler has potential to become 'top Elite' referee?
ReplyDeleteAssuming he's getting promoted to Elite in January.
Not ready, but he will
DeleteAs experiecned as that 4th official is, he was very well aware of the risk and possible reaction of players and staff at the moment when he said “negu”. He took that risk, and now he will deal with concequences.
ReplyDeleteWhat was his “real” intention is not really important at the moment, since UEFA will surely protect the integrity of the game
Penalty from Barca-Juve
ReplyDeletehttps://t.me/REF_EX/6
https://t.me/REF_EX/9
I'd be surprised if Rosetti didn't faint and get taken to hospital, his telephone (or UEFA commitee whatsapp group) must be fuming
ReplyDeleteWhat a night.
At first, I feel sorry for Mr Colțescu and whole Romanian crew as they has to face farcical, extremely exaggerated reactions after a literally nothing-incident. But well, it's the world we live in...
ReplyDeleteBut I would like to say that:
- all those soft penalties given this season
- all those disastrous performances of Marciniak, Orsato and so on
- some blackouts of top officials who had to be helped by VAR (or not)
- extremely chaotic if not inexistant handball interpretation (it actually changes each matchday)
- very low form of the likes of Jovanović, Kabakov, Treimanis who were in a pole-position for promotion last years
It's just a very poor group stage for refereeing this season. The refereeing that is constantly ruined by political influences and dirty games in the offices. After this group stage, I would say Mr Rosetti is surely not as strong leader as Mr Collina and maybe that's why the latter had to leave...
+1, UEFA refereeing is in trouble when many things were promising at the start of the season.
Delete+1 Fully agreed of explanation. If one referee poor perfomance could happend, two referees ok-black days in refereeing, but half of elite referees and 1st group constantly with poor performance -that means problem in the head of refereeing.
DeleteWith all respect to Hategan but not normal be referee in six matchdays. Mr. Rosseti time is ticking away
PSG-IBFK tomorrow 18:55 CET
ReplyDeleteAugust 2018- Swedish referee Fredrik Klyver was hit in head with object thrown from stands during Europa League game Sturm-Aek Larnaca. UEFA's decision was "nothing serious, play on please."
ReplyDeleteAugust 2019- Northern Irish referee Arnold Hunter was hit by flare in head in Europa League match Craiova-Honved. UEFA's decision was "nothing serious, play on please".
December 2020- 4th official Constantin Coltescu in Champions league match PSG- Istanbul Basaksehir informed referee that he should send off black player. UEFA's decision: "scandalous, shocking, unacceptable, remove referees from stadium, call new referees, restart will be tommorow, prepare lot of no to racism banners for tommorow's matches"
Politics should not be in sports. This is political decision and I am afraid that whole team Hategan will be suspended. Support to them!
Excellent summary of what world we are living in!
Delete++++++ when Mr. Rosseti started work in UEFA?
DeleteA more cultured referee would never have spoken like that! See how important it is for referees to have culture and degrees.
