  1. Daniel Stefański fourth official in Rennes.
    Marciniak for this game?
It seems as UEFA has technical issues in releasing appointments.

    1. I think Marciniak will go on group B.
      For this game probably Raczkowski.

    2. Maybe a Czech official with an polish 4th official, like Orel in EL on Thursday. So Maybe Kralovec in Rennes?

    3. Marciniak ist in Rennes VAR mit ein junger Schiri Frankowski

    4. Insider writes in German : Marcniak is VAR in Rennes with a polish young referee Bartosz Frankowski.

    5. Another CL suspension for Marciniak? Well, would be deserved but I'm terrified what happened with this referee. He was literally faultless when reaching elite and seasons after that, we were talking about him as one of favourites to handle EL and CL final next years. But now he is worse from season to season. This season is a real nightmare for him.

If true then it looks like referees will face consequences of too frequent big mistakes even if they are 'great leaders', 'have good rapport with players', etc. That's good from Rosetti I think.

      Delete
    6. If confirmed, indeed it would be surprising both for Bartosz Frankowski CL debut (absolutely unexpected for me) and Szymon Marciniak still out from appointments as main referee. Harsh punishment by committee in that case. Let's see!

    7. Nach dem 5. Spieltag gab es viele Änderungen durch Covid 19. Marcinaks Spiel in der CL wurde auch korrigiert. Er pfeift jetzt in der EL ein Spiel von ausgeschiedenen Teams.

    8. German translation Insider:
After the 5th matchday there were many changes due to Covid 19. Marciniak's CL match was replaced as well.
Now, he will referee an EL match with teams, who both have no chance for the next group already.

    9. I agree with Anonymous - Marciniak was simply INCREDIBLE in the 2014-17 period, almost totally faultless (I can remember only two mistakes - missed SFP in Dynamo Kyiv - Fiorentina; missed penalty in Juventus - Barcelona).

Even through his period of bad form, I found his courageous style and ability to connect with key actors in his games simply excellent and top class.

It was only after Covid break that he seemed to really 'lose it' - I found his approach to the Atlético - Leipzig quite shocking and disappointing, even if his performance was okay overall.

It's remarkable: Marciniak seemed 'on top of the world' for so long; and now...

      Delete
    10. Mikael, I think it started earlier. In the WC 2018 his performance was also not very good

      Delete
    11. i think so, too...there was a crucial wrong dogso situation in germany-sweden, after only a couple of minutes. clear foul by boateng outside the box, missed rc...

      Delete
    12. but also to mention: we shouldn't speculate too much on marciniak being "punished" for anything...in these days with the covid-situation maybe he was tested positive and has to stay at home...who knows?? maybe he got injured? maybe he has travel-ban? maybe he has family issues? in my eyes there are too many "maybes" :-)

      Delete
    13. marciniak has not tested positive. He was scheduled for the Europa League in the wake of changes in line-up due to Covid ud makes VAR in Rennes for Frankowski's debut.

      Safe!

  6. Maybe I lost something on the road..
But Marciniak refereed PSG-Leipzig well! Why only an appointment as ref and always VAR?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is indeed strange, the appointment for PSG - Leipzig looks like a weird one in the context of the rest of group stage for him.

      Delete
    2. I am sorry, but I think you're a little forgetful ;).
In Leipzip-PSG Marciniak whistled IMO a wrong penalty for PSG in min15, but tbh it was not a clear mistake for VAR.
And he missed also a clear penalty for a handball in Min55. There was a OFR.

in my opinion he refereed not well with this two mistakes.

      Delete
  7. For me the situation of Marciniak is strange, he made mistake in Turkey-Russia, but he refereed important match Leipzig-PSG very well, he was 2 as VAR, I dont understand completly What happend in this season, last he was strong candidate to EL or CL final, and he was very often main referee, In This we have situation, Where one some groups referees has 4-5 matches, for me, that’s odd

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not odd at all. The list of Marciniak's unacceptable-at-this-level mistakes this season is very big. You shouldn't be rewarded for awarding a penalty for a textbook example of undeliberate handling, for issuing only a YC for the clearest DOGSO-no attempt to play the ball offence, for awarding a penalty for a clearest dive ever, etc. And in Leipzig-PSG he was not sooo good either...

      Delete
  8. WBA-Crystal Palace RC after OFR:
    https://streamja.com/3nApA

Watching the last replay (last 10 seconds), it looks more like a YC to me. I am not disappointed by the decision, but is it really an OFR material according to LOTG?

    1. "Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, *regardless of whether contact is made*."

He (tries to) kick him in a particularly painful part of the anatomy. I can vouch for that! So for me a clear Violent Conduct.

When PGMOL have a stricter approach than UEFA, maybe one can reflect that sth has gone wrong somewhere. :D

      Delete
    2. Haha yeah, although when I think of Atkinson, Friend or for example Chris Kavanagh in some games, I wouldnt be so sure about stricter approach.

If this will be the criteria appllied elsewhere, then ok. But I am not sure that this would be always for any ref in England a RC.

      Delete
    3. I didn't expect such an approach at PL level. Good VAR intervention (unlike last season when the referee couldn't see the monitor) and decision at the end.

      Delete
    4. IMO a clear RC and a good VAR intervention.

      Delete
    5. https://streamable.com/3hm7va
      - Same situation in Wolves vs Leeds earlier this season, probably the hit was even worse, and no VAR intervention.

The real problem is the total lack of consistency in English refereeing. For the same incident, you might receive a RC or you might completely get away with it.

    1. Surprised ! CL Debut for Frankowski

      Marciniak is out for Wednesday.

      Delete
    2. Wow, what a debut for Frankowski! He had many VAR blunders in Polish Ekstraklasa but overall is a decent referee. I didn't expect that so quickly after promotion to First!

      Delete
    3. Sorry but I can't really accept this choice by UEFA as meritocratic - Frankowski is a decent referee, when did he show manner / presence / leadership style on a CL level? At least I haven't seen it.

Debut as 'compensation' for the (justified) punishment for Marciniak? That's all I can think of. And what about Peljto, Dabanović, Tohver? Even Rumšas.

(Of course, I wish Frankowski and his team a very successful night on Tuesday!)

      Delete
    4. Still, better to wait for uefa.com, nothing against you, YoungRef, but I prefer to read the names on the official site.
Very surprising indeed, looks like somethinf related to Marciniak suspension. One couldn't have guessed at all this debut, and it seems also as Raczkowski has not convinced so much committee so far.

      Delete
    5. Didn't Raczkowski have several increasingly important appointments this season in UEL? That was an indication that something bigger will eventually come his way. With more and expanded competitions, UEFA needs to increase their pool of qualified referees.

      Delete
  10. Let's not forget that Marciniak should have been punished already last season when he used a wrong frame to determine offside on Champions League level (Ajax - Chelsea, referee Hategan even decided correctly on field...)
It was bound to happen that he would be out of appointments at some point

    ReplyDelete
  11. So, without Marciniak as option, it becomes absolutely thrilling to guess who will get group B games. I think that now it is 99% impossible to see two referees who didn't offciate before in the same group.
    No options for committee!

    3. I expect Grinfeld for Milan - Donezk and Oliver for Real Madrid - Gladbach.

      Delete
    4. Agree, Anonymous ! We will see tomorrow

      Delete
    5. With all due respect, Oliver did not get any major appointments after the infamous Real - Juventus, so why would UEFA do that now? In fall 2020, UEFA's most trusted (non Italian or Spanish) referees are Kuipers, Makkelie, Taylor. Brych is German and Hategan just reffed Real.

      Delete
    6. Kuipers, Makkelie, Grinfeld, Taylor, Cakir and Turpin have whistled in the group B

Not possible : Orsato, Del Cerro Grande, Mateu Lahoz, Brych, Zwayer, Marciniak, Jovanovic

      Delete
    7. You missed Hategan who refereed Shakhtar - Real last week. However, it will not be the first or the last time a referee would have more than one match in the same group.

      Delete
    8. Oh, sorry ! You have right !

      Delete
    9. Anonymous, Oliver got Atlectico madrid Vs Bayern Munich during the Match day 1.. he has risen to be a trusted official for uefa slowly but surely he has. He also got a UCL playoff match this season that only Uefa most trusted handled including the super cup that Taylor handled

      Delete
    10. Most trusted means finals and semi-finals. I doubt that Oliver wilk get a decisive match, but let's wait and see.

      Delete
    11. As expected, Oliver is not among the selected referees for MD6...

      Delete
  12. With all due respect to Frankowski, but if confirmed, I must say, very unjustified CL debut for him. So many referees who deserved debut in CL before him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think treating Marciniak is hurting you, they now treat it as a stuffing hole...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Marciniak was not removed from the cast. During MD5 he refereed the King's Cup final in Arabia and now he is the referee of the decisive match for the exit from the group in the Europa League.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He will certainly be back in UCL knock-out phase.
It is good that other referees are given opportunities.

      Delete
    2. With one match in group stage you realy expect him in knock out faze of Champions League. I doubt that...

      Delete
    3. I have absolutely no doubts. UEFA needs his experience and the errors can be corrected with VAR. After the winter break, his career will move on toward Euro.

      Delete
    4. Referee 12 I can bet with you that Marciniak will have knock faze matches, and the loser of the bet will donate some funds to charity

      Delete
  15. If Frankowski gets an appointment IMO it would be undeserved. There are many referees who deserve a CL GS debut more, like Peljto, Dabanovic or Sánchez Martínez.

Interesting situation from serie A game Crotone - Napoli:
Red card for SFP after VAR intervention.
Originally, referee had whistled indirect free kick because he did't spot the contact with opponent, thinking oly about a dangerous tackle but without touch. This has absolutely allowed VAR to intervene. Referee had a 100% clear wrong perception.
If referee had issued YC on the pitch, I think VAR intervention would have been more in doubt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Even with a YC, it would have still been a wrong perception.

      Delete
    2. I do not think so. If given a yellow for the tackle, the VAR would not or might not have intervened solely because the tackle wasn't high

      Delete
    3. That doesn't matter, if the ref has seen something different from what really happened.

      Delete
    4. My point exactly, if he had given a yellow that means he had seen a contact and decided yellow was sufficient I do not think VAR would intervene but because his perception was so wrong that he gave an IDF it became apparent an Intervention was necessary

      Delete
    5. Indeed, I agree with Chiagozie, I think there is a by far bigger difference between detecting the contact and not detecting it, while once detected, yellow card or red card is a different topic. If referee sees the incident on the pitch, and YC is not totally wrong, VAR doesn't intervene.
I think you can't comprare both seeing / not seeing contact and YC / RC issues under an unique argument "seeing something different than what really happened".

      Delete
  17. Is it possible that UEFA decided they won't publish appointments until they are sure that appointed referees at least got on their flight? That would mean they will publish appointments day before the match...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was thinking the same thing: if the issue was with their website I think they would’ve fixed it by now.

      Delete
    2. How come a random fourth official is posted on the website and nothing else? It does not make any sense other than technical issues...

      Delete
    3. Indeed the fact that fourth official in Rennes appeared on uefa.com means that they have technical issues, otherwise they would have postponed all the publication. Also, no reason to hide names just a day before the games, a few weeks ago in my opinion there was even a worse situation regarding COVID...

  18. Wrong restart by Craig pawson after initially awarding a penalty then it overturned by VAR, he gave Liverpool a freekick or indirect free I thought for simulation but he did not issue a yellow card instead of a dropped ball. It is so so so infuriating how such simulations go unpunished now adays. It is irritating.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Could the IDFK have been given for playing in a dangerous manner, as Wolves attacker goes with his foot high and stud first when trying to get the ball?

      Delete
    2. Definitely not so, the restart was an IDF for Simulation

      Delete
    3. I was absolutely shocked there was no caution for simulation.

  19. He is not a brave referee at all at all, no courageous at all, jeez, see how the Liverpool Captain shouting in his face while another english man gave Vidal Red card after 2 yellow card........... Never Elite level, has this disinterested body language and blows for anything, no wonder Uefa over looked him after champions league matches last season and none this season and they are accelerating Christopher Kavangh

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I’m sorry but many English referees have a disinterested body language. Exactly the sale goes for Oliver, and Kavanagh for example. And Kavanagh may be pushed by UEFA, but why? Several average to sub-average performances lately, of which last week’s Feijenoord-Zagreb was one. Too harsh criticism to Pawson in relation to Kavanagh IMO.

      Delete
    2. Only different English referee is Taylor .

      Delete
    3. I tend to disagree, Oliver is one very focused referee in the top flight of england. To put into context he covers more ground per 90 minutes then most premier league referees, he is so close to play than most players but what I don't like about him is his non smilling approach to players. He is always presenting an unapproachable referee to players.maybe he takes that approach because of his relative young age and that's what gives him respect and acceptance

  23. We have the acta of Alavés-Real Sociedad.

ALA6 sent off by Munuera Montero for speaking to a teammate in the following words:

'(This referee) won't whistle any foul for us, he's blind'.

(Original in Spanish: 'No nos va a pitar ninguna falta, es un ciego')

    Video of incident: https://streamable.com/hzd52d

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's quite an uncommon call, TBH. There is plenty of discussions like that on the pitch and there will always be. Considering the fact the Alavés' player is not directly talking to the referee and there is nothing "too insulting" in his world make me think that its a YC. Guess the RC will be supported.

Generally, there is more about uniformity to be discussed about this dismissal. We know plenty of players in La Liga who talk in even more aggressive terms to the officials (e.g Ramos, Suarez, Raul Garcia...)and in the immense majority of the situations goes umpunished. Its all about consistency.
If Munuera Montero feels that this is a RC offense, why not. But then you have to systematically punish those behaviours, especially with players who directly insult at referees. Did he would have reacted the same with big teams like Barcelona, Real/Atletico Madrid (social medias pressure)? Would all the referees and CTA enclined to act in this way ?

      Delete
    2. He has support in the laws of the game if he feels he’s insulted by that. But the it needs to be a clear line through out a season to punnish similar offences also with RC

      Delete
    3. Firstly, if the player had said that directly to the referee, the RC is correct in my opinion. "You are blind" is normally classified as insult (although one can always discuss the political correctness of that). And I know some referees, who even see the "He won't whistle any foul for us" as insult, because it questions their impartiality - but that's more doubtful.
Secondly, if players don't talk to the referee, but to a teammate, it's normally not an insult and wise refereeing is to overhear and ignore their internal discussions.
In this special case however, the referee is the closest person to the player, who therefore must assume, that the referee can hear him. So it is a valid interpretation, that he wanted the referee to hear his statement - and then it can be classified as insult again.
So overall, a supportable decision IMO.
Uniformity is probably hard to achieve here, because it certainly requires interpretation and it's not easy to find objective criteria for it.

      Delete
    4. Is it straight red or second yellow? In the last case, supportable decision. In the first case, unbelievable. If this is a red card, you can give five red cards per match IMO.

      Delete
    5. Would not blame referee here.
      RC is supportable.

  26. Why are there blank Spaces on names of refeeds appointed nowadays? A day to the game???

    1. UEFA has not published the appointments yet.
      Maybe technical issues.

  27. Knvb anounced: Kuipers for Real-Monchengladbach, Kovacs for Zenit-Dortmund and Stieler for Barcelona-Juventus.

  28. So a confirmation that UEFA has problems in releasing appointments, you can see that KNVB was allowed to publish them at the expected time.

    1. AGAIN HATEGAN (PSG-Basaksehir) is a record. He had Basaksehir against Man Utd two matchdays ago. Kralovec, Mateu, Stieler, Kovacs , Frankowsi and Ekberg the others

  30. Lazio - Brugge - Cakir
    Zenit - Dortmund - Kovacs
    Rennes - Sevilla - Frankowski
    Chekse - Krasnodar - Kralovec
    Kyiv - Ferencvaros - Ekberg
    Barcelona - Juventus - Stieler
    PSG - Istanbul - Hategan
    RB - MU - Lahoz

  31. No doubt, Stieler for Elite🔜!!!

    1. Agree ! Stieler must show his good performance tomorrow

    2. Surely but bad bad signal for Zwayer, he is going to be treated how Gil Manzano was treated after Del Cerro Grande was promoted to Elite that now makes you wonder how Manzano was promoted to Elite before Del Cerro Grande

      Delete
    3. Felix Zwayer is positive to COVID, that's we he has not appointments since 3 matchdays nowadays

      Delete
    4. I wasn't referring to his exclusion from appointment recently but his recent performances and how Tobias Stieler is being treated. This is how Del Cerro Grande was promoted and Gil Manzano fell down the perking order of spanish referee to 3rd at Uefa level

      Delete
    5. Good move by UEFA, since Stieler has shown more football understanding than Zwayer and that is expected from a modern referee.

  32. Cakir: Normal appointment in an important match. However a good sign, that UEFA trusts him with that after some doubts recently
Kovacs: Good to see that he has recovered. Normal appointment for his level. I wonder, whether he has some chances for CL KO stage and/or EURO given the problems of some others
Frankowski: Expectable to see a debut in this match. Frankowski probably not a favourite after only 4 EL matches and no Nations League A. However he had the sonorous Milan-Lille as last EL match and got 3 NL appointments this season.
Kralovec: An unimportant match, but IMO correct to give him at least one CL match in this season. However a demotion seems possible and further progress (incl. EURO) quite unlikely at the moment
Ekberg: Normal appointment for his current standing
Stieler: Another top match, although only about first place in the group. Better game than Brych this week and, of course, another signal towards a promotion
Mateu: Again with Manchester, but there weren't many options in the group. Well trusted by UEFA and remains a candidate for a final
Hategan: Extends his record, but it's not clear, why this was necessary. With Basaksehir already out and the much smaller team away, a lower Elite referee (Kovacs, Grinfeeld, Kruzliak)would have been suitable as well.

    1. Veey good analysis as always Philip S!

I believe UEFA appointed Hategan because he has "his" momentum this season and they wanted to set a new record.

      Delete
    2. He definitely has the Europa League Final this year that is Hategan, if not then something is really wrong with Uefa

      Delete
    3. If UEFA really trusted Hațegan, they would have given him Leipzig - Manchester United, but I don't think the committee really do to be honest.

Excellent achievement to handle six out of six GS rounds, Romanian team should be very proud of that, but this really wasn't the best allocation of resources in my opinion.

    4. Good analysis Philipp S
Agreed about Cakir, Kovacs and Mateu
For Ekberg its clear signal for promotion
Frankowski-looks appointment in advance in match Milan-Lille not showing confident performance, very soft penalty and problem with foul detection
Stieler-after match in Liverpool and RC missing in EL match, very strange appointment, UEFA show that they don’t care about marks (for some referees).
Very pity for Kralovec- good referee in the past, but seems that Rosseti doesn’t trust him
Hategan-important game for PSG and after match with ManU need elite referee

      Delete
    5. UEFA must be feeling sorry for having left Hategan out (as referee) from the finals and semi-finals of last season and now they are giving him 6/6 UCL matches, but still not really the top games.

      Delete
  33. I don't know why everybody underestimate PSG-Istanbul, to be honest I did expect experienced referee there. The reason?
The match will be easy if PSG scores early and remain leading entire match, but what if not.... In case that Istanbul scores first this match may become very very difficult, expecialy when we have Neymar, Di Maria and company...

    1. Plus - I am surprised to see Brych in Olympiacos-Porto, I expected him in more important match tham that. Again, great match for Stieler, not so important for the outcome of the group but very high profile match, he is clearly in elite from January.

    2. Agree on the match in Paris, very important and potentially highly challenging game.

  34. Two small comments to the appointment of Královec:
    1. He got a rather unusual assistant referees.
    2. Why are Czech referees not used as VARs? VAR is used in Czech league!

    1. It seems as a good-bye match given to Kralovec, who got this UCL appointment after months of being ignored by UEFA.

    2. Well, maybe a good-bye match for Královec, and also a gift for Zelinka, which was ignored by UEFA too. Can anybody explain, why was Zelinka demoted from group 1? I think He is still a great referee, he was a candidate to elite group, but now is near to third category or maybe out from FIFA list. But I don't remember any crucial mistakes in his matches...

  35. Correct me if I’m wrong but is this now 6 consecutive appointments for Hategan?

  36. I just watched Man in the middle last episode and I found interesting to see the Macron representative implicitly recognizing that kits are not perfect when it comes to pockets.

As a Spanish referee I have Macron kits and both shirt and shorts lateral pockets are too narrow and not deep enough (also, shorts pockets have an IMO useless double velcro). So I hope they fix the pockets for their next collection (hopefully this summer?) to make them similar in length and depth to Adidas ones.

  37. Last CL match for AR1 Mike Pickel in Barcelona; a great assistent for a long time; WC2010 and EURO2012 with Wolfgang Stark, now a big game as farewell.
