    1. Thank you.
So we can easily understand that Maresca just anticipated his trip to France for the replacement in Marseille, but this was already planned with Mariani (indeed originally they were appointed together for yesterday's game Genoa - Parma).
Eveyrthing is planned in the best possible way with appointments, as Genoa is the closest place to France among serie A cities.

    2. this means that Maresca will go from Marseille to nice in 24 h . Good appointed for Mariani , he can improve on the pitch in an interesting match

      Delete
    3. Seems that Spanish referees are full appointed this MD, even De Burgos, after CL MD (as VAR) has now a EL GS. This could explain why Maresca was yesterday with Gil Manzano.

  2. Great observer for Monzul. Good sign I think?

    1. One could have expected Trentalange for Frappart before Monzul, given how UEFA is appointing them. For sure a very good signal for her in any case, I agree.

      Delete
    2. I’m curious to see if UEFA manages Monzul the same way as Frappart; they both brig similar experience from the women’s game having each reached the final of a WWC. (Of course, we can only speculate how UEFA has scored their performances so far).

Monzul’s path so far seems much more congruent to the traditional path than Frappart. Monzul, of course, has been refereeing in her nation’s top league for 4 years, as opposed to 1 in Frappart’s case, and only has EL matches to this point instead of CL. I wonder if Monzul will follow up with a dead-rubber CL match next week, assuming good performance this Thursday?

  3. BTW I don't understand why UEFA doesn't reveal all appointments, as they are known from the morning and federations are allowed to publish them... as it was yesterday.
I can only think there are some technical problems.

  4. UEFA website seems to be tested positive for COVID-19 but fortunately shows only rather mild symptoms since yesterday. We may be confident that it fully recovers within the next 10 days.

  5. Peter :D you are the best

  6. This is a bit frustrating really, and strange.

Anyway, I suppose Bebek is not going to be appointed for this MD, as he is appointed in Croatian league tomorrow and on saturday. Probably we could se Jović getting a game this week.

  11. Duje Strukan appointed for Sivasspor - Villareal, 2nd GS game for him, very promising for a 2nd category referee!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also Orel from Czechia has second game in UEL group stage. He is still 2nd category ref. Good appointment for him.

      Delete
    2. Well, there are two things I don´t understand: How Orel could be on the FIFA list and moreover near to the first category (he is one of the weakest Czech referees, my opinion is based on his performances in the Czech League) and why he has Polish fourth official and not Czech?

      Delete
    3. let's hope that he will be more concentrated than at the game in Osijek . Obvious penalty missed ... good luck to Strukan, it will be a demanding game

  13. Very good by UEFA for Delerue ! Firewall internationnal game for him

  14. Siebert with Zwayer's assistants looks like a replacement. On the other hand EL for Siebert (and maybe CL for Zwayer next week) makes more sense IMO, because he already had 2 CL matches.
Anyway, I wouldn't have expected a CL experienced referee for that match...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Siebert will also have a game on EL MD6 next thursday. Maybe this is an additional argument for the replacement theory?

      Delete
    2. In that case, he replaced Zwayer due to health or performance issues?

      Delete
    3. I got the information, that he doesn't replace Zwayer, but another, non-German referee, who has been tested positive.

      Delete
    4. Then why exactly with both Zwayer's ARs?

      Delete
  15. With De Burgos and Estrada, all FIFA referees from Spain are out in this matchday. In champions League Gil Manzano (De Burgos VAR), Del Cerro Grande (Cuadra as fourth, Martínez Munuera as VAR) and Mateu (Munuera Montero, Hernández and Sánchez)

    ReplyDelete
  16. What happened with Georgi Kabakov? He was in pole position for promotion to elite (I would even say he should've been promoted along with Kovacs - same experience, same path) and now he is treated like a normal first group ref?

    ReplyDelete
  17. IMO, UEFA should avoid appointing Pawson to Omonoia - PAOK.

Pawson was the referee of last year's CL match Ajax - PAOK. He awarded 3 penalties to Ajax and Paok fans were furious.

Now PAOK has a crucial match in Cyprus. IMO, the appointment is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're right! Maybe they chose him because there is no crowd?

      Delete
    2. Were the decisions correct? I couldn’t care less what the fans think about them.

      Delete
    3. IMO, yes. All 3 penalties.

      Delete
    4. To Quote Pierluigi Collina:
"I always say if the referee gives three penalty kicks it's not a matter of being noticed or not, it's a matter of taking three correct decisions, giving three correct penalty kicks"

      Delete
  18. I'm actually really surprised that Jovanovic got another match after his performance in Feyenoord - Wolfsberger AC. I watched him in both Ajax - Lille last season in UCL and Netherlands - Mexico this season and it already occurred to me that he lacks some basic management skills and his foul detection is just horrible. Everytime a player goes to the ground he just simply whistles.

Then in the Feyenoord - Wolfsberger game he whistled two completely wrong penalty's and a very soft one. It was the worst performance of a UEFA referee I witnessed in a very long time. If a referee doesn't get suspended for the rest of the season for a game like that, then no referee should ever. For me, the guy just does not have what it takes, but I wonder about other opinions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. Feyenoord - Wolfsberg was a scandalous performance and in the friendly between the Netherlands and Mexico, the penalty he gave to the Mexicans wasn't even a foul and if you would argue about that, it was offside.

      Delete
    2. In the Feyenoord game he didn't only whistle three ghost penalty's, he also failed to give a penalty to Feyenoord and missed a foul before the third goal of Wolfsberg.

      Delete
    3. I thought the whole scandal thing was really blown up. First PK 3' war correct. Second PK 12' was wrong. 60' Jovanovic should have given a foul on the GK before the goal, but it was not easy to spot and the GK initially doesn't really react to the impact. 63' the Feyenoord attacker went down early before the challenge (left leg), probably still a PK, an experienced ref would have evened things out, when the chance came. 65' Goalkeeper gets ball but bumps recklessly into the striker, PK supportable.

      Delete
    4. The problem is of course that each and every important 50/50 situation (and there were a lot) went to one team. One can hardly deny that the referee’s decisions determined the end result to a great extent.
A scandal is a too rigorous term, I agree, but a referee on the doorstep of Elite can be expected to have handled this match in a better way. In my opinion the referee showed not to be ready for an Elite spot (yet).

      Delete
    5. To say scandal or ghost penaltys are so wrong. 2 out of 3 penaltys were correct IMO. Only second one was DIVE and wrong.
Even Zwayer is making much more mistakes as ELIatE in important matchs but still get rewarded so dont say it was terrible.

      Delete
    6. Relax and be objective. You can't treat referees like they're disposable goods.

      Delete
    7. @ Anonymous 11:45
I would be more ready to say that he deserved a CL game than the comment you wrote. 2 out of 3 penalties were correct, to make statements about "a scandalous performance" is merely a fake news in this case.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous 11:45 here (still need to figure out how to put a nickname on here). Maybe it's indeed a bit harsh to judge a ref on 1 match, although I have to disagree about the 2 out of 3 correct penalties, but it's merely a pattern of games in which he was really unconvincing for me. But maybe the game in Lisbon will be a chance to get back on the right track.

      Delete
    9. Cherry picking. I think that except the 2nd PK (in which if there's a contact it happened outside) all decisions in FEY-WOL are correct or supportable. For example, he had a good performance in Real Madrid-Shakhtar.

      Delete
  19. Jovic and his team have been delegated for the match in Rome, certainly one of the proofs that they consider him one of the most promising referees whose time for big matches is coming. Great respect for the Croatian four

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. According to all the above, this season he is the best Croatian football referee, so it is not surprising that a large number of matches in Europe have been awarded to him.

      Delete
    2. I think that both Jovic and Strukan are quite good referees!

      Delete
  20. I agree, Jovic making big steps forward this season, and that is us absolutely justified.

    1. I will be very surprised if Orsato does referee Juventus v Torino on Saturday, he was so very off-form at Manchester, I thought he looked ill and looked as if he has not fully recovered from the illness he was reported to have on this site and looked disoriantated, going to the wrong side of the pitch initially for the VAR screen and spending less than 2 seconds to review a possible red card incident. I as a former FIFA referee rate Orsato highly, but something was very wrong with him on Wednesday.

    6. Because of the situation in relation to Covid the referees (and their domestic associations) get to know their appointments sooner than usual, but CL and EL appointments should be kept strictly confidential until two days before the match. National associations releasing appointments before MD-2 jeopardize these appointments. Referees concerned are at risk of being replaced. So completely understandable that Chefren intervened and deleted the comment, to prevent the refereeing team being harmed.

      Delete
    8. Interesting! This means that UEFA appointed md6 earlier, without knowing the outcome of todays matches?

      Delete
    9. Superstar0110 is incorrect if he talks about the specified appointments. He may be correct if he means that the referees are informed about being appointed for a match on a particular MD about two weeks before (not the exact match though).

      Delete
    10. It seems that this blog is a referees' association style, where referees' interests are above the readers' interest in getting information rather than an independent social media where information is freely posted. Thank you for clarifying that, so we know what info to expect.

      Delete
    11. Apart from the sole character trait of curiosity, what is the reader’s interest in knowing appointments earlier than 2 days before a match?
Why should leaking information be encouraged or applauded?

      Delete
    12. Anonymous, no, I'm not incorrect. I know on which match my friend is appointed next week on MD6. Believe me, officials know that in advance.

      Delete
    13. Then your friend will surely confirm that the early communication of appointments is unusual and due to the Covid-situation. Yes, officials know before the official publication, but no, as early as two weeks before is not usual.
But indeed, MD6 appointments were already done before knowing the results of MD5.

      Delete
    14. That you for your good judgement, Chefren. To those who want the appointment to stay: just because this is a blog we *could* use to share that information does not mean that we *should* or that it would be ethical to do so. In this case where it could compromise the medical privacy of the referees, I agree it is best to not publish these appointments.

    1. Excellent and correct decision by ref Monzul. Please refer to Art. 38.05.a of the UEL Competition Regulations 2020-2021.
After the validated match sheets have been submitted no changes are allowed. Before the match has kicked off, the following exceptions are possible:
If any of the 11 players indicated on the match sheet as forming the starting 11 are not able to start the match due to physical incapacity, they may only be replaced by any of the substitutes listed on the initial match sheet. The substitute (s) in question may then only be replaced by a registered player (players) not listed on the initial match sheet, so that the quota of substitutes is not reduced. During the match, three (as of the group stage: five) players may still be substituted.

I think few officials would know how to deal with that.

Then 2 minutes of strong protests (but mostly polite) of Rijeka players, intensive communication of the whole refereing team and in the end a correct decision. 3. If I remember well, there was indeed a dropped ball.

It was a challenging situation because the handball was so obvious, but with both players with hands in the air jumping it could have been difficult for the referee to see who played the ball.

And that is happening when you appoint someone who is not experienced enough to deal with that kind of games and you don't allow them to build up normal path for referee from the bottom to the top. It's nice thing to do something different but not this way. If UEFA give to the girls the chance to start in group 3 or even group2 and build up experience, this wouldn't have happened! But obviously it's more important to do something different than something right!

      Delete
    3. To be fair, Anonymous, Monzul’s path seems more “normal” so far than Frappart’s. Monzul has been in the top league in her country for 4 years, and UEFA has given her a Nations League D game and one Europa League game... correct me if I’m wrong but that doesn’t feel like an abnormally fast path, it seems normal enough. I cannot speak to the quality of her performances in Ukraine (having not watched her outside of the WWC) but theoretically this appointment doesn’t seem too unusual. Compared to Frappart, who debuted in the Champions League just a year after her Ligue 1 debut, which is a much faster track than any other UEFA referee I’m aware of.

  58. Did Monzul lose control? After having watched it, I would say Yes she did. I would also say that the way the players acted was disgraceful. They behaved like children, so I don't think we can be too harsh on the referee. Lessons to be learned? For sure. For example, when Liberec were wasting time by playing the ball short in the corner she needed to be closer so her presence was felt and she could react quicker. But this match is no reason for Monzul not to be appointed again in the future. Just my opinion.

Indeed I agree with the analysis made above by Philipp and Mikael, I think that Mariani missed the incident, he was looking at ball and he didn't perceive that player had hit opponent in a (at least) reckless manner. Having played ball despite of the foul is often used as argument for playing on, but in this case the challenge is too evident.
Most interesting point for discussion is: would VAR have intervened?

I must say surprising mistake by Paganessi, NO FIFA assistant referee, but among the most experienced, he got a derogation for this season (he had to retire at the end of last year).
He also made a mistake corrected by VAR in previous serie A game Torino - Sampdoria before the EL assignment...

      Delete
    2. Thank you. Paganessi is NO FIFA but he is among the best ARs in Serie A in the last few seasons. I remember no mistakes by him for dozens of matches, and two excellent onside calls on Milan-Inter derby in February 2020.

      Delete
    3. IMO According to recent interpretation of the LoTG, that would be a penalty. However, it is not that kind of penalty people like, because the tackle occurs after the ball has been kicked. Very difficult to see live by the referee, and maybe it was better not to whistle it... no protests by players

The offside is quite a big mistake. It was not difficult to call.

      Delete
    4. I think, VAR would have intervened, if it was indeed a missed incident.
If Mariani saw it and assessed it as no penalty (because the ball was already played), I am not so sure.

87' is also interesting: IMO wrong offside decision (deliberate play by the defender, i.e. referee should have helped AR) denying a possible (not mandatory IMO) penalty for Leverkusen.

Leverkusen was quite unhappy with the referee and media wrote, that on the one hand VAR is missing in EL group stage, but on the other hand one should also expect a better refereeing performance on this level and by a referee from a top league.

    7. Thanks for this video, I should have downloaded the match again to do that!
At the moment of last touch by attacker (shot), second 12 of the video (00:12) teammate can be even in regular position, or at least one can't be sure about offside (look at defender below). I don't think it is too much question about deliberate pass or not (and one can discuss) but I think rather situation was very difficult for assistant referee and maybe he missed the moment when to assess the offside, thinking that the subsequent touches had been made by an attacker... this incident seems to be impossible to assess 100% correctly without VAR.

      Delete
    8. Hm, but Mariani could have told him that the last pass came deliberately from a defender. Then everything else (including the very tight position at the shot) becomes irrelevant, because it can't be offside anyway. This would not have been too difficult, I think.
Of course this is only true, if you agree with me that the pass was deliberate.

      Delete
    9. I think we are entering an era where there is an over-reliance on VAR. That incident should ALWAYS be assessed correctly by a referee-AR duo in a match with comms (so all professional matches).

The ball has deflected off the chest of the defender and then is played by the foot of another defender. If a professional AR is flagging there, it's because he doesn't recognize who that last touch came from, as Chefren says. But the referee clearly sees it. If you are the referee in that match, you MUST ask the AR what he saw and why he's flagging because you know who had the last touch.

Sorry, but that's poor from AR (ignoring questions about offside position) and even poorer from the referee. Good teamwork gets this right 100% of the time. VAR should not be necessary to fix a call like this.

      Delete
    10. Hm, I don’t think referee can be really blamed here. Let’s consider the attacker in an offside position (and I’m not sure about that). The guidelines given by UEFA say that it is a deflection when ‘the ball moves towards the player’ and it is not the contrary (here there are both situations, but the defenders run towards his goal, not in the direction of the ball), when ‘a player finds the ball coming against him’ (this is the case) and in case of ‘an instinctive attempt to play’. In addition, we know from uefa that it is considered a deflection when a player ‘has not enough time to play the ball’ and ‘has to find balance first’. In my opinion, even if we have a double touch here, this is without a doubt a deflection, after the save of the first defender.

      Delete
    11. I don't see actually a deliberate playing. It's more a try to avoid it. At least a supportable decision.

      Delete
    12. Very surprised by the reaction here. It's the second defensive touch. The ball has now gone in three different directions, two of those caused by the defense. How many "non-deliberate" plays do we allow befere the (alleged) offside is no longer punishable. This isn't pinball. It's football.

Would people allow three, four, or five deflections and still punish offside? There's a point where you have to start thinking about the Spirit of Law 11 and not just interpret the text like robots. This is not supposed to be offside.
