    1. Maybe (I hope so, tbh) a punishment for a very important no intervention after blatant reckless use of arm in 90' of KSAJOR. But I expected also Japanese team to be punished for below-par performance in ALGSDN.

    1. Maybe by Saudi Arabia FA / team that want Marrufo being strongly punished for not calling Gassama for an OFR after a blatant and crucial penalty missed?

As I pointed out above, this inexplicable mistake was potentially very crucial for the game and group (we don't know if KSA would scored but still).

Most likely the mistake(s)' influence on the final result is also an important factor why Sato (and Kimura) was appointed again after two crucial mistakes (only one corrected by VAR unfortunately) in ALGSDN. There the game was one-sided and ALG won anyway.

  5. Good first half by Siebert from what I saw. Solid foul detection and two very good advantages given. But I wonder what whistle he uses? There were two situations in which the players didn‘t hear that he has already stopped the game.

I have become a fan of Wilton Sampaio. He enters the field of play simply to referee what is in front of him and radiates calmness and confidence. He is extremely focused on assessing incidents and therefore quite distant but his naturally serious body language and mimics make players respecting him. Two potential SFP incidents, indeed very close to SFP, but still maybe not clear and obvious mistakes and hence I can live without VAR intervention. Well done, Brazilian team, I would like to see you at the WC!

    1. Me too. IMO Sampaio is by far better than Claus and he deserves it.

    2. The 39' it's a RC for nr 5 of Syria, in my opionion.

      Delete
    3. In my view:
39' SFP for me. The player has his boot enormously high and hits the opponent dangerously in the head; he is wholly responsible for his action which is endangering his opponent's health.
81' Good advantage and correct play-on after this penalty appeal; but the challenge looks very wierd. With the first leg it seems to be intended to play the ball, but he puts it down to the ground and instead uses his left leg when the ball is already played and dangerously hits the opponent with open studs on the shin. Thus, I prefer a RC for SFP here as well, but certainly nothing clear and obvious.
      90+5' Everything's correct here.

    1. Also Adonai Escobedo as offside VAR instead of assistant referee in this role like in all other games so far.

    2. The switch had been officially announced, it was even on fifa.com, but they backtracked on the decision, another one of those interesting behind-the-scenes stories that cannot be made public.

  8. Offside check for Oman's third goal took nearly 2 minutes. Shouldn't this now be an immediate decision with the new technology?
It was clearly only about the tight position, nothing subjective to decide.

  10. Some interesting calls in today's matches: Matone with a clear penalty and later an OFR after he decided on free kick on the edge of the penalty box. Apparently, VAR had seen that a foot contact had been insided, but Matonte decided no foul after OFR. Was a rather challenging game, with some rough play and lack of respect by some Saudi players.

Hernándenz with a very good instant SFP RC a couple minutes ago. Foot to the side of the head. Not intentional, but definitely a RC.

    1. Another horrible tackle, another RC. Hernández should NOT have needed an OFR for this decision.

  11. Algeria vs Egypt (Tello) ends in a draw. Decisive regarding first and second place was the fair play record, with both teams on an identical number of cards until added time. Tello then cautioned two Algerians, with the second booking being overturned for a SFP RC after OFR.

    1. My views:
      7' I don't see enough force/intent to justify a sending-off but a YC should be issued.
15' Basically, the defender misses the ball and only hits the opponent's leg. But the amount of contact (there is no stamp in the end) still seems acceptable, so I would support Gassama here, especially regarding VAR.
81' Correct IMO as the arm position can be justfied by the sliding movement.
84' Seems like a reckless tackle, so YC would be appropriate; no major issue whatsoever.
87' Good play-on for me, the ball is already shot on goal, the following contact doesn't have a clear reckless character.

    1. My views:
13' Attacker is in the worse position and goes down after a light contact - correct call.
29' Accidental IMO but Matonte's way of dealing with this whole scene is quite disastrous (generally passive, wierd play-ons, ...)
45+2' Completely correct decision, GK is simply too late.
53' The KSA player is sprinting across half of the field desperately simply to go into this dangerous tackle; a RC would have been appropriate with the attacker's leg dangerously catched in between the defender's legs/hips. The player must be sent off nonetheless for his unacceptable dissent behavior.
55' Again, risky challenge but I think it's still okay to assess this as reckless.
58' Excellent by all (V)MO: the contact is inside the penalty, so a FK is wrong in either case but the VAR sent the referee to the monitor because this situation isn't a penalty - the attacker is wholly responsible for the contact, he initiated it by moving into the defender's path.
      74' Reckless IMO, correct.
79' This is actually not a foul for me: the attacker acts cleverly by putting his leg between the defender's legs so that the KSA player makes him fall down - the latter however didn't commit any infringement during that.

    1. For me:
7' The decision is at least supportable for me. There is a slight contact with the ball but the following contact with the opponent is too significant.
      18' Correct and expected flag.
      40' Totally unintentional, correct play-on.
45+2' I would go for 'accidental' as I don't really see intent here but Faghani's decision is a clever one.
70' Excellent decision by AR2, extremely close offside offence.
87' The defender puts his leg into the kicking movement of the attacker and pretends that the PLE player kicked his foot but it's rather him committing an offence here IMO - while a penalty would be actually a correct decision, the official took a suportable decision as well.
90+1' Again, good onside/offside call, this time by AR1; the still image seems clear but with the Real speed you can see how close this certainly was.

    1. My views:
36' I think there's rather no clear foot contact, play-on is totally okay.
49' Actually, the player goes in this challenge very dangerously from behindm the opponent's ankle is bending due to the contact with the trailing leg - I prefer a RC here (player's action endangers his opponent's health) - play-on is a clear error nontheless.
      62' Completely correct RC.
74' Uncontrolled and highly dangerous tackle; again, clearly correct sending-off. As the whole action was quite obvious (not so much about a specific point of contact), Hernandez could have spotted this on-field.
83' I would support the official here, I cannot detect a clear striking offence.
89' Both players should be cautioned IMO; the LBN player holds the opponent blatantly (LoR), the SDN player reacts frustratedly but his strike lacks brutality/force to be worthy a RC.
