Brych, Hategan and Vincic with 5 UCL GS matches.
ReplyDeleteTurpin & Makkelie 4 UCL + 1 UEL GS matches.
Karasev, Marciniak, Orsato 4 UCL GS matches.
Champions League Group Stage matches 2021/22
ReplyDelete1x:
Hernandez Hernandez, Kulbakov, Sidiropoulos, Ekberg, Visser, Treimanis, Frankowski, Rumsas, Kabakov, Sanchez Martinez.
2x:
Soares Dias, Mateu Lahoz, del Cerro Grande, Cakir, Massa, Aytekin, Meler, Peltjo, Guida.
3x:
Taylor, Bastien, Siebert, Zwayer, Letexier, Kovacs, Gil Manzano, Oliver, Scharer, Gozubuyuk, Jovanovic.
4x:
Turpin, Siebert, Makkelie, Karasev, Marciniak
5x:
Brych, Hategan, Vincic.
Orsato - 4
DeletePeljto directly with a second appointment after his debut - and even a match still relevant for first place in the group.
ReplyDeleteNormal match for Gözübüyük - with 3 matches he remains a promotion candidate.
Aytekin seems to have overtaken (back) Stieler and this appointment should confirm him in Elite. Remarkable that he was chosen over e.g. Cakir, who was quite possible there and stays with 2 games.
Hategan again with both, Bayern and Barcelona, seems avoidable. Again Cakir or maybe Kovacs would have been alternatives.
Normal match for Bastien, who seems to be stable in Elite now with 3 GS appointments.
Taylor quite expected in an important game. Overall only 6 matches for English referees is disappointing (for PGMOL) though. Spain, Italy, Romania, France, Germany and Netherlands have received more games.
Vincic confirms that he is considered as one of the very top options by UEFA. Logical choice as he didn't work in group G so far.
This is not true for Orsato, who had Wolfsburg already. But as options were limited in that group, no big surprise after yesterday.
First main VAR appointments of the season for Millot and Tierney.
The fact that Aytekin is appointed over Stieler for Benfica - Kyiv is a very worrying signal for the latter. After Atalanta - Real Madrid, it seems as committee directly considered him for a possible demotion. Never Champions League again, that's absolutely weird. Remember one year ago he officiated Barcelona - Juventus on MD6, and from this game he started with rather poor performances, but definitely no arguments by committee to treat him in this way, after having closed eyes with many poor Elite referees, who were assigned in CL again. Probably, the fact that he comes from Germany makes it even more difficult to manage because there are other options to be prefered by committee from his country. At the same time, a good signal for Aytekin who will keep very likely the Elite status, but we already know that demotions are not made, so we shouldn't have doubts. This game was basically for a Category 1, because it is an expected win by Benfica, committee find the compromise to appoint a so called "low Elite" like Aytekin.
ReplyDeleteAs for the rest, we see something very similar to yesterday, with referees getting always same teams, now Hategan again with Bayern. The Romanian has had an outstanding group stage in terms of appointments, but differently from other referees with big games, his performances have been rather "normal" and not so much extra-ordinary, one of them very discussed, the game between Atlético - Porto, and some VAR interventions in other games. Basically, he has trust by committee, but he is clearly some levels below other names.
Peljto with a second game to make experience with VAR, Gozubuyuk with a normal assignment for a "Upper Category 1" in Russia.
Vincic in Salzburg with a decisive game and Orsato again in the same group. More than expected Taylor in Bergamo, I could point out, always the same names for Italian teams in big games, and that's true. There isn't any different choice and it is always easy to guess who will get a game. But this must change in future for sure.
Bastien in Manchester to find more confidence after a difficult period, he is appointed again with Young Boys after that very controversial game, I don't remember whether the crucial decisions went against the Swiss team or the other one. Time to recover.
Among the missing debuts, Mariani, considering also his path until this group stage. I think that if they had him in mind, they would have found a game, so there could be other reasons behind that (domestic performances?).
I totally agree with you Chefren. Especially the treatment of Stieler is a bit strange. Of course, his game in Bergamo was not good, but to be honest you can find for other elite referees also matches that didn‘t go well.
DeleteFor sure we all know the one or the other.
Yes I agree regarding Stieler. It is indeed very strange, it's really difficult to understand what's happening.
DeleteBtw Stieler didn't get another match in Germany after that terrible penalty call in Werder Bremen-Schalke two weeks ago (suspended?).
I can't believe that the correct (or at least supportable) call could lead to such unfair treatment only because there was Italian team 'aggrieved'. I start to think there is another reason. In other case, the referees can start to fear handling games involving Italian teams unless they will be biased from the first minute.
DeleteBenfica-Dynamo Kyiv is clearly for an Elite referee.
DeleteA lot at stake for Benfica.
It is the first time, or at least a very rare case, that I read on the most important Italian newpapers some negative news about German refereeing, and the reference is to Zwayer after Borussia - Bayern. He has been accused for his past, I'm surprised because mostly in Germany there isn't any strong criticisms about referees.
ReplyDeleteFor sure this will not help Zwayer in reaching something important and very likely he will have to give up about the chances for becoming Germany nr. 1. Siebert will take this place, I'm quite sure.
To be honest, this whole situation has escalated completely. Defamation charges against Bellingham, DFB investigating as well and probably the worst for Zwayer is that everyone in Europe (or even the world) now knows about his past.
DeleteThe thing is, it isn't even anything new. This has been known in Germany since 2014. Yes there has been tons of critism since (Manuel Gräfe very vocally in particular) but this is just getting out of hand.
It's going to be really interesting to see what UEFA/FIFA will do now. Do they just "throw him away" or do they keep appointing him? Obviously his past has never been an issue before for UEFA/FIFA but with all this media attention now, it is very difficult to predict what's going to happen. What do you think?
Btw Chefren you were right, DFB confirmed that it was indeed offside by Haaland in the buildup to the penalty situation.
It's also a huge topic in Germany.
DeleteThere are two things:
1) The decisions on Saturday. He didn't give a possible foul penalty for Dortmund (which also was slightly offside according to DFB) and then gave a handball penalty to Bayern after OFR. Both are grey area and surely no clear errors. So the justified criticism can at most be about the OFR happening (not Zwayer's fault) and then not deciding uniformly in the two situations (but should one compare a handball and a foul?) - nothing more.
2) A player then brought up the 2005(!) match-fixing scandal, where Zwayer was involved and connected it to the current match.
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_German_football_match-fixing_scandal - Zwayer accepted a bribe without reporting it, but didn't influence the match. Later he was one of the main witnesses)
While one can certainly discuss the decision to let him continue with his career back then, it seems very unfair to still bring this topic up over 15 years later, when there are controversial decisions by Zwayer. He got a second chance and used it well.
And implying that his decisions at the weekend were somehow influenced by match-fixing is unacceptable, of course.
OK, I was too slow...
DeleteBut to reply also to Dominik: It would be quite illogical, if UEFA/FIFA would react to that now. They surely knew his history and had already decided to still use and promote him since 2014.
Thank you both for the answers. At first, with this short summary reported by Philipp, if 100% confirmed, I must honestly say that a referee accepting that without immediately reporting it should be banned lifetime from football. We know how much nowadays UEFA is strict with that, a referee from Russia had to retire and was heavily punished because he had refused but he didn't inform about that.
DeleteHowever, the main point is that this story now belongs to past and it belonged to past also in recent years, when Zwayer reached many important steps in his international career.
We can be sure that both FIFA and UEFA knew that, but maybe DFB can be blamed for having treated so superficially the situation at that time.
Having said that, at least on paper nothing should change for him because so far the German has been regularly appointed in all competitions, attending WC tournament as well with VAR.
Of course if the topic is always discussed, the thing is not good because he can be in trouble in the games he is about to officiate. The classic scenario is to get quite normal appointments in UEFA without big assignments or chances to reach something big again. I'm really sorry because this is a very difficult situation to bear, but it had to be managed definitely better in past.
Tbh if I were Zwayer and I officiate BVB again, I'd refuse to shake hands with Bellingham.
DeleteDon't get me wrong, I fully agree with you. I really hope it won't be an issue BUT we all know how UEFA/FIFA care about (negative) media attention.
DeleteI just don't see him getting appointed for top matches with big media attention anymore. As soon as there is one controversial call, the media will bring up his past again and I'm quite sure UEFA/FIFA really don't want to see that... :/
Is it possible that this somehow 'violent' reaction by BVB is caused by the fact that they have been pretty unlucky with referee decisions this season?
DeleteOT: last Saturday, Makkelie overturned his VAR (Joey Kooij) in front of the monitor. Yesterday a spokesman of KNVB stated that they agreed with the decision. Correct application of UEFA policy. It was somehow refreshing to see. IMO it happens too often an OFR is not justified (not "clear and obvious"), especially when the VAR is not experienced, but many referees are mentally not strong enough to disagree with a VAR and follow their own path.
Do you happen to have the link of the interview he gave to ESPN?
DeleteWho do you mean?
DeleteAnyway this article has the Bellingham interview and Zwayer's statements translated to English:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10276749/Borussia-Dortmund-vs-Bayern-Munich-Felix-Zwayer-defends-penalty-calls-Jude-Bellingham-attack.html
@Philipp S what's the meaning of "omissis ... Zwayer accepted a bribe without reporting it, but didn't influence the match" ??? For what reason he accepted a bribe? He didn't know why the other person is giving money to a referee ?! If this happen in every other work-place, it's something that can put a person to jail!
DeleteFor the match Borussia-Bayer, i think that a lot of things happen in Germany, and the most of them are in Bayern favor. In Italy thay called it "sudditanza", if i'm not wrongh!
He worked as AR for the main culprit Hoyzer, who gave him some money to support his match-fixing in a game. However, there didn't seem to be any situations, where Zwayer actually took a different decision due to the bribe.
DeleteIn general, if the game is already going to the desired result naturally, the bribed referee doesn't have to do anything.
It look very suspicious that he goes from "bribe" to "FIFA" even if he didnt accept to influence the game.
DeleteIn most of the countries, you get expelled, if you don't report a "proposed bribe".
About the game, all the 50/50 situation where called in Bayern favor, and that's a big problem, not the penalty/no penalty (in my opinion).
I really hope FIFA and UEFA don’t shut Zwayer out in response to these comments; that would only encourage the vigilantism displayed by Bellingham here, and it would show an incredible lack of personal integrity on the part of FIFA and UEFA, shows that media pressure, not the actual facts of Zwayer’s situation, dictates their decisions. These facts have been known, of course, since at least 2014.
DeleteNow, I agree with other commenters here who say that the punishment handed out in 2005 seems, on the surface, to be too light. But it is a settled case, it was dealt with by the experts at the time who investigated it fully, and this was the outcome that they saw most suitable. I don’t know too much about the exact details of the case and I doubt very many others do either; we must respect the decision made by the authorities at the time as reliable and fair unless new evidence is presented which they did not have access to. We cannot relitigate these matters 15 years after the fact just because a big popular English player decided to bring it into the media’s mainstream…
smala017 - sorry, I disagree. The problem with DFB (and OeFB in my country as well) ist the complete lack of transparency concerning issues with refs. DFB tried to hide the Zwayer-case for nearly ten years, until the German paper "Die Zeit" covered it up in 2014. Felix Zwayer has had a lot of matches in Bundesliga, some brilliant, some nothing more than arrogant.
DeleteFor a referee imo correctness, modesty and serving the game as an undisputable official are indispensable.
In my book, Zwayer is a non-starter in all these categories. DFB, having failed to act accordingly, has to pay the bill for that. And Felix Zwayer too, of course.
That does not excuse the silly interview, Bellingham gave. But it would have been better, Bellingham had not had the opportunity to say so.
Why did Cüneyt Cakir have to settle for two matches? Is he being punished for the Milan match? Or is it because Ceferin still can't forget the Slovenia-Austria game?
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Lahoz take very few matches. Is his performance this season considered inadequate?
After Collina no fair in UEFA Ref. Committe.
DeleteYou are absolutely right. After Colina, the referees of countries such as Germany, England and the Netherlands are constantly getting matches. On top of that, Ceferin villager Vincic is constantly getting matches :) Despite Vincic's mediocre performances, it is not normal to take matches.
DeleteEverybody can see that either Rosetti or Čeferin or both of them don't like Çakır and Mateu Lahoz and treat them unfairly. Some names can commit mistakes, some not because they are used against them. It's really bad.
DeleteIn Cakir`s case, yes, it is pretty obvious. But Mateu Lahoz`s situation is particularly strange. If either Rosetti or Čeferin or both of them don't like him, how did he get the UCL final? In my opinion something changed definitive after POR-FRA in June.
DeleteAlso, interestingly Gil Manzano had more UCL games this season than both Lahoz and del Cerro Grande. Is he back in the race for the Spain`s WC spot ? As long as CdCG continues to underperform, I think this is a real possibility.
I partially agree, but if today there are few referees considered really reliable, Collina is also to blame IMO. Instead of developing new referees, Collina has always used Kuipers, Cakir and Rizzoli: it is not a case that Kuipers has directed twice the EL final or that Cakir has made two semi-finals in CL in the same year. In general, I remember a lot of questionable choices: for example, the management of Clattenburg in 2016 or the fact that, in 2018, when Italy was not at the World Cup, Rizzoli and Rocchi were selected instead of Rocchi and Orsato, despite the fact that everyone knew that Rizzoli would retire earlier. Rosetti is not perfect, but if today's young referees are not at the level of the past, it is not his fault.
Delete@Alba Torrens Imo Vincic delivers good performances. Indeed, he benefited greatly from Skomina's injury and his leap was quite sudden. For this reason I contested his UEL semifinal appointment last season but he did it alright. Anyway, you definitely can`t say that his presence at EURO was undeserved. I see him a strong candidate for UEL final this season together with Marciniak and maybe Hategan.
DeleteFirst of all, I would like to state that my message is not an insult.
DeleteVincic has been arrested for drug (cocaine), prostitution and arms trafficking charges. Normally, it is not possible for such a person to be a UEFA referee. But he was always protected by Ceferin. I agree with most of the people on the blog. In my opinion, referee performances are not important for UEFA for 3 years.

Arrested but you forget to say that he was innocent. No charges.
Delete@KeyNote
Delete1) Vinčič has in fact arrived 'late' to Elite category. If you look at the early posts of this blog in 2017/18, when category revisions arrived, people thought that Čeferin's presidency actually affected negatively Vinčič's UEFA career because it could be seen as nepotism to have two Slovenians in Elite. He was not promoted 'because of' Čeferin.
2) That's an outright lie. Vinčič was not 'arrested for drug, prostitution and arms trafficking'. The pub where he was sitting was raided by the police and he - as well as every single person that was there in that moment, was put in custody that night. He was later released free with no charges because he had nothing to do with what police were looking for
Cakir case is both political and personal for a long while. One must accept and move on.
DeleteIn Law5 admin level, there is an ignorance to this obvious mobbing (i.e. no external whistleblowing). This is sad for a platform which claims an impartial approach to all stakeholders in refereeing.
@Anonymous 13:39
DeleteI don't understand what you wanted to say.
What should we do as blog admins? The situation about Cakir was discussed many times on this blog, so? Let's remember we are not official UEFA spokesmen and everyone has their own opinion.
So, what do you want us to do?
@Chefren: What is your oppinion on the incident EVE vs. ARS on the bottom?
DeleteThe fact that Vincic "arrived" late in Elite is not because of Ceferin - that is myth. By the way, after Skomina has retired, UEFA is pushing a second Slovenian (Obrenovic), so having two Slovenian referees in focus was never obstructed by Ceferin, but supported.
DeleteBut why a so smaill country can provide so many referees? Why not from other countries? Excellence refereeing only in Slovenia? Honestly, I don't think so. Thus, this is unfair and Slovenian referees are rather pushed.
DeleteSorry guys, but what would you do if you are Rosetti and you want to do your job as uefa referee chairman for a long time? I am sure most of you guys would do the same and push the referees from slovenia if the president is from slovenia. That is a fact! I agree with you, it is unfair compared to other countries, but we have to accept it.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Delete@David I think that it was a RC, and VAR had to intervene, for me deliberate act, it can't be accepted.
DeleteGreat for Peljto, I would like to see him in UEL ko phase.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamwo.com/file/61ae7298b54ac
ReplyDeleteWow, tbh that's a clear RC for me. The Everton player knows exactly what he's doing... and guess who's the VAR? Stuart Atwell.
No comments? Supportable decision? No VAR stuff?
DeleteWell, referee decisions are not so interesting nowadays as politics and what Zwayer did in 2005.
DeleteWhat the hell is going on with Attwell? Clear RC. It doesn`t even matter if it was with intention or not. The Everton player made a hole in his opponent`s face!
DeleteI think no intervention is a good decision. No intent, has to put his foot down. It is clumsy, but I prefer no RC.
Delete@ David,
DeleteYes, I completely agree with you. Even more - I think that the Arsenal player deserves a red card because he hit the Everton player's leg with his face and endangered his pedicure.
@anonymous: If you think it was on purpose, it's a clear RC. But I think there is space to not be sure about it. If it is not intentional, the fact that the studs hit the head dangerously don't mean it's a clear RC IMO. This happened not so long ago to Soucek: https://i.redd.it/t0p2i5tky0u71.png
DeleteIMO clear RC.
DeleteAn interseting article is in TheAthletic regarding the incident:
Deletehttps://www.google.com/amp/s/theathletic.com/news/ben-godfrey-why-var-did-not-send-off-everton-defender-against-arsenal/4Hgnhj2Niqd4/%3famp=1
But I stick to my opinion that it is a mistake. I would definitely prefer RC here.
No red card for me. He tries to keep his weight off of the fallen player but simply can’t stop his momentum. He had no way of reacting to the opponent’s fall in time to completely avoid contact; I think he mitigated the contact as much as he could. He doesn’t drive through with his right leg and actually shifts most of his body weight awkwardly onto his left leg to avoid putting it on the opponent.
DeleteReally the fault is on Godfrey’s teammate here, whose challenge put the Arsenal player in this vulnerable position.
@smala017 That is exactly how I saw it. The only concern is: Why does Godfrey look away last second? At that time he has to realise that the opponent is on the floor and that it could be dangerous. But once made contact, he definitely tries to take away the weight, as you said :)
DeleteHaha and I was wondering if someone here commented on the situation. :)
DeleteVery difficult, but Im personally keen to support Dean, the contact with the body seems unavoidable and I dont see the intention to aim the face. Very ugly to see, but can happen.
I would also like to know: If you decide for a RC, is it even possible to give it for excessive force or is VC the only option in such cases?
DeleteDavid: Excessive force can be either SFP or VC. Only matters if there was an attempt to challenge the ball.
DeleteAwful decision. Clear intervention needed with 100% evidence for Red card VC.
ReplyDeleteNot a RC in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYou are ALL forgetting, IF Dean has said to Atwell he saw what var did and judged it accidental var cannot recommend an ofr!? Yes its a red card I agree but all.tbe blame isn't at Attwell imho
ReplyDeleteI've just read that the Atalanta-Villareal match might get postponed due to snow. Does anyone have more info? Chefren maybe?
ReplyDeleteKick off postponed at 21:20.
Delete#throwbackwednesday Gala Juve 2013 Proenca memories
DeleteThanks!
DeleteShouldn't the other group match have been postponed as well? For equal chances?
DeleteCorrect YC to Busquets by Hateagan (min 2')
ReplyDeleteQuick first YC by Hategan to Busquets. Well done. Takes some time due to the cold. After, good quick response to injury for a player.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting fact: it has been reported that a scenario like Group G on MD6 never happened in Champions League before today. The last placed team can still qualify as group winner. That's very particular, because with so many editions and groups, it's quite remarkable that this never happened.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion all four teams are indeed on a same level and the difficulty by committee in appointing different names for this group was also because clubs are from countries like France, Germany, Spain and Austria.
Committee realised that and appointed only EURO referees in the group since MD3 despite the lack of big teams in the group.
DeleteNumber of EURO referees per group:
A: 6 B: 10 C: 5 D: 5 E: 8 F: 7 G: 9 H: 2
Update about Bergamo game: it seems as Villarreal don't want to play, they are asking for postponing the game, maybe tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteIt could be done because both teams have the next game in their leagues on Sunday.
Could I ask why English officials are refereeing a game in a group with an English team though. BT are reporting it as postponed
DeleteFor equal chances I think that the both games from the group must be played at the same time. It is not fair play for YB Berna.
DeleteCould have to be a change of officials though as Chris Kavanagh and Darren England both have matches Saturday but they could be swapped on the Premier league side of things if needed
DeleteYes indeed I was just checking that, Young Boys had some interests as well, since they can reach third place and EL qualification, based on Atalanta - Villarreal score.
DeleteNot important like CL KO stage qualification, but still important. Game in Manchester shouldn't have started, but I think UEFA didn't think at all about that. And.. I don't know how much the Swiss team will care about that.
@Davidcrammond Taylor was allowed because the team from his nation is already qualified as group winner, impossible to reach for the other teams, in this scenario, the choice is possible, until last MD Taylor couldn't officiate in this group.
BBC reporting it officially off now.
DeleteHonestly I'm rather surprised by that. UEFA usually never wants to postpone, especially on MD6 (still important for EL qualification). Is it really that bad?
DeleteBern need to win anyway to keep their chance, so they don't have an advantage of knowing the standings from Bergamo.
DeleteHowever Atalanta will get the advantage, that they know, whether a draw helps to stay in EL or isn't worth anything (if they are already secure) - so that they can risk more for a win.
The pitch is basically covered in snow before kick-off, the snowfall was still as heavy and is meant to continue all evening, there is 0 chance of the pitch improving once the grounds staff are off it, it's in the best interests of a good and safe game to delay the kick-off.
DeleteI imagine PGMOL will be fine with Kavanagh and England staying on their games based on both their games being Saturday and 15:00 and 17:30 kicks respectively. Providing travel is done on Thursday immediately following the game then there should be no issue in their minds.
They're probably getting a backup plan ready incase but as they're only 4th (as long as Taylor doesn't get injured) and var they should be alright as you said
DeleteTwo yellow cards for Barcelona verte soon. Both correct.
ReplyDelete1-0 by Bayern detected by GLT. Impossible for Hategan and his assistant.
ReplyDeleteActually, If I had seen well, Gheorghe was going to the middle before Hategan showed the GLT.
DeleteIt's possible that I'm wrong, but isn't the signal coming for every goal? I mean no matter if ball just passed the line or is 1 meter in. So referee doesn't need a perfect position to see exactly. Thanks
DeleteExcellent no handball by Orsato at 38', supported by VAR
ReplyDeleteBastien not convincing in 1H - struggling a bit with positioning.
ReplyDeleteVery thight but correct offside in 41' by AR2 Kovacic at Salzburg : Sevilla. Great decision!
ReplyDeleteTottenham game is off against Rennes due to a covid outbreak BT and BBC reporting.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the other game in the group between vitesse-mura will go ahead. Vitesse and Spurs are equal in the group and goal difference could decide who will go through...
DeleteBastien again so poor foul detection
ReplyDeleteIndeed the decision to postpone the game in Bergamo can be described as something new by UEFA. I don't know if this is the first signal of a new course, but Dominik is right when he writes that this is very surprising. In recent years we remember many games forced to play under the worst weather conditions, without any chance by teams to ask for postponing, not even the day after. The last postponed match I remember is indeed Galatasaray - Juventus in 2013, then after that games were mostly always played in extremely difficult conditions.
ReplyDeleteAlso, who really decides that was never clear to me. Can referee take this decision or must he obey to UEFA delegate? In my opinion regulations were never clear.
Salzburg - Frankfurt Februar 20 wurde wegen Orkanböen auf den nächsten Tag verschoben.
Delete3-0 by Bayern, according to last replay, ball should be totally out.
ReplyDeleteCorrect no flag by AR1, ball wasn't 100% out.
DeleteChefren but I guess it was not 100% clear and IMO nothing for VAR.
DeleteUmm the replay was actually clear that it was 100% not out and still in play.

DeleteA clear handball in Benfica - Kyiv, open arms, even above shoulders, VAR doesn't intervene. Again, I really can't understand.
ReplyDeleteI must say, Hategan is doing a very good job in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteVincic missed an SFP foul 69. with yc showed.
ReplyDeleteStep on the foot is low and the foot is then sliding away. I prefer YC.
DeleteDocumentary on french tv on sunday night 9.00 PM (Canal+) made by former fifa ref Tony Chapron

ReplyDeletehere's good link
Very quiet evening in Champions League if compared to yesterday, however the most crucial and I think most challenging game for the referee has been postponed. No OFR - VAR interventions today.
ReplyDeleteYes, because most of the games today were managed by Referees and yesterday - by Turpin, Manzano, Makkelie and Brych.
Delete@Anonymous: I don't understand your comment
DeleteXabi, don't care, it is just a very poor comment.
DeleteAtlanta vs Villereal to be played Thursday at 1800 gmt
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/ps1f4s
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about this handball?
To be honest, I have no explanation for missed VAR intervention.
Looks so clear and obvious. It would be interesting to know the reason both for Aytekin and AR, and from VAR.
DeleteMaybe: ball was shot to the hand and hand does not move to the ball?
DeleteStupid to defend like that though.
IMO penalty
DeleteFollowing the LOTG it's not a punishable handball because the ball hits his hip first.
DeletePersonally I would prefer a handball, but following LOTG no penalty is the correct call.
One argument, which is often used in Germany, is, that the arm is not stiff - but swings back. This is considered an indicator that the defender didn't have the intention to stop the ball.
DeleteI don't see the touch by body before, and even in case in my opinion it shouldn't change assessment because only a marginal deflection with a so open arm. The argument about the arm that is not stiff is another very difficult criterion to apply. Well, I think that in this circumstance we can see the difference between a VAR from Germany and then a VAR from another country. Italian VAR would have called OFR.
DeleteI ask Rosetti: is that correct? I know that handballs are really impossible to categorize, but for sure there is a problem, a situation like that in a game with Italian team would have astonished all people...
UEFA surely needs to work on having a uniform interpretation in their matches - independent from the referee's country.
DeleteIndeed, Philipp that's the most important thing, I don't want to appear as the one who wants all handballs called, but I see that they never treated on a similar level. That's surely difficult, but the trouble is that for committee the fact that different VARs come from different countries is not a problem, in the meaning that they don't give guidelines. We see top many different assessment, that's not possible with VAR because, I repeat myself again, it becomes a second officiating at VAR's discretion. This should be avoided. I just ask for consistency.
DeletePossible handball in Orsato's game: https://streamable.com/fuhjup
ReplyDeleteI don't know, maybe later during the game other replays were shown, but assessment should be that touch was not by arm.
Orsato immediately touches his chest, I don't know how he saw that, very very difficult!
DeleteFelix Brych was on Sky Germany today. I thought I'd translate some things he said.
ReplyDelete- he's relieved that his last CL match and last international season went well and is feeling great
- proud that he's had so many matches
- always felt big pressure before important international matches, says you can only loose in certain situations no matter what you do
About how he handled the pressure before matches:
- thinks a lot about the players, coaches; how are they gonna play tonight?
- his team helped him a lot, very important for stability
- has been working with a sports psychologist for more than 8 years
After his last CL match:
- players and coaches congratulated him after
- Madrid's president gave him a small replica of the Bernabeu with Brych's name ingraved in
- Inter gave him a jersey signed by all players
- Barella came to him after the match and gave him a hug :D
- really wanted to have a last match without a RC but couldn't do that :D
About players/situations in CL:
- says the Ronaldo RC is something that was on his mind for a few months
- never had any issues with players, everyone respected him
About the whole Zwayer incident:
- didn't speak to Zwayer yet
- doesn't really want to comment on it
- Referees are not just referees, they are also human beings! They deserve respect and is shocked especially by social media
About VAR, GLT:
- very helpful, especially in big deciding matches (mentions Spain-Sweden, important who's going to the WC)
- says in the first year with VAR, he sometimes relied too much on VAR
What now?
- will still continue in Bundesliga
- will miss CL but he's happy about what he's achieved over the years
- says it's been extremely stressfull in Covid times because of flight and travel restrictions; had to leave at 8am and would arrive at 11pm the day before the match
- mentions that his life was stressfull because of so many matches, he was sometimes mentally exhausted after he's had CL during the week and Bundesliga on the weekend
- is looking forward to more free time now
Thanks!
DeleteIs he the ref with the most CL matches ever?
He is indeed; with 69 CL matches.
DeleteWow! What an achievement. Bravo!
DeletePenalty appeal by Atalanta in first half:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/umy7mk
Play no, no VAR intervention. I agree with Taylor and Kavanagh.
Ilicic very often tries to get easy penalties.
Absolutely no penalty IMO, attacker puts his foot in front of the defender just to win a penalty. Agreed, good call!
DeleteCorrect decision. Ilicic deliberately puts his foot in front of the defender. Never a penalty.
DeleteProbably a clear penalty for Italian media though :D
Indeed the commentator (Massimo Ambrosini, former plyer) says: "Ilicic has been very clever in putting the leg ahead".
DeleteWell, but at the end at least he agrees would be a too soft whistle. Players have such mentality in serie A, only looking for contacts and not playing. In recent years referees have whistled soft and soft penalties many times and that's the result when you play an international game with referees like Taylor coming from England...
Ilicic does not sell it very well. Otherwise I have seen penalties like that given, the defender stretching and not getting to the ball, while the attacker is in a better position with the right to shield the ball. IMO
