  1. Well, at least we now know predicting based on previous appointments with the same teams is useless. Good and reasonable appointments though. Happy for Schärer, Nice one this!

    1. Not only Makkelie and Turpin, Schärer had already officiated in that group, for this reason I didn't expect him. Committee should really reflect on this situation, while names like Makkeli and Turpin are UEFA "monsters" one can have doubts about the so narrow choice they have. The same team, just one or two games after. I hope for the future this situation can change, but it is very difficult. Time is needed, but also, the big names are really on an extremely high level than the other Elite, difficult to explain in words.
Good appointment for Rumsas. The last game for Brych in Madrid, as expected, an outstanding career.
Massa with a fourth game, but without any importance for the standings.

    2. I do agree that it would be better to have more “big” referees. But as we can see weekly in Conference, UEL and UCL, it’s not that easy to find those referees. I am convinced that the implementation of VAR makes (young) referees / the new generation not better. They are too much depending on VAR, instead of creating a strong personality. Referees should officiate as there is no VAR. Nowadays referees aren’t that focussed any more and less hunger to grow and succeed, because they know there is help from outside. This way of thinking creates a lack of development in personality and player management. I am afraid that in the future less and less “monster” referees will rise and shine because of this mindset. UEFA and FIFA are in a very difficult situation and are not the ones to blame for. Also, see how often a big part of elite referees needs OFR’s in UCL matches. They are consistently in front of the monitor. What would have happened in times when there was no VAR?

    3. Schärer is a normal appointment, I think. He had the parallel game on MD1, so no repetition of the same club.
Massa with his 2nd CL game, this probably means, that he is at least not behind Guida in UEFA's evaluation and therefore in the chances for promotion.

I agree, that it is a bad sign, that UEFA has to repeat Makkelie and Turpin in group B. The reason is not only the lack of top Elite referees (resp. the lack of courage by UEFA to trust less established officials with such games), but also that there seem to be limitations based on previous controversies. IMO, it is unneccesary, that e.g. Oliver still can't do Italian teams after several years. Otherwise he would have been a good alternative in this group.

Well, your last question is surely very interesting. I think that nowadays, without VAR nd with the raised football-money interests by teams, would have been a drama for committee. In this context, true that most of referees, especially among Elite, rely too much on VAR and they don't take decisions. The process to make them develop is very difficult, you are right. The decision making is very difficult to teach, you must already have some skills in your mind, that's why I really like referees like Makkelie, Turpin and a few other ones (Taylor, Orsato are very good but they are different in this regard), every game they officiate by isolating themself and taking big decisions. The hope is to see many Elite referees doing that, but indeed not possible in short times maybe not even in long times...

      Delete
    5. The best elite referees are those that do not stand in front of that monitor :)

  2. Interesting set of appointments, indeed.

So why do Turpin and Makkelie get a second appointment in Group B?
I can assume that the teams in Group B are more difficult to referee. Is it a lack of options?

    1. To me, it makes sense that they appoint the best referees to the big/challenging matches. When these referees are in charge of big games it always goes smoothly, with little to no mistakes. It's a safe approach to appoint them to big matches.

      Delete
    2. Liverpool already secured the first place in the Group won’t go all-in. So in my opinion Milan - Liverpool shouldn’t be the most challenging game “on paper”, but… Mr Rosetti is very careful when it comes up to Italian teams in general and this is still a very important game for Milan. If they win, the EL spot is theirs and even CL is a possibility if Porto and Atletico draw.

To be honest I expected Taylor on the challenging game Porto-Atletico, but Atalanta-Villareal would also be a nice sensible choice. Furthermore, I expect either Orsato or Karasev on Salzburg-Sevilla.

  5. How do referees' appointments do not clash between International leagues and their respective country league?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The domestic leagues normally don't have matches midweek, when there is Champions League. There is an international match calendar, which regulates that.

      Delete
  6. So the following day we will have 5 matches that will decide who is going to the next round.
With Elite's such as Brych, Makkelie and Turpin, I assume that the next day we will see some other Elite's...
Maybe Siebert, Mateu, Stieler, Cakir... ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well Siebert is away on tournament. I doubt Stieler given he hasn't had a UCL match all year. The English guys might get a game, otherwise the likes of Orsato, CDG and Karasev seem to be in flavour at the moment so I would expect them.

      Delete
    2. The English guys could even be an option for the decisive game ATALANTA - VILLARREAL in group F with Manchester United which will for sure advance to the knockout stage as the group winner. The same counts for the German guys and BENFICA - DYNAMO KYIV in group E. However, UEFA used to avoid such appointments in recent years, as far as I remember.

  7. Do you understand, why Scharer is not suspended for the long period of time due to his mistake with 2 yellow cards in Galatasaray - Lokomotiv EL game?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because he didn't make this mistake. We talked about the situation on the blog, explanation is that in first case he showed card too early but he didn't write down any booking, so the second showing was the only one and for the previous foul.
Only a poor mnagement in terms of waiting before picking card.

      Delete
    2. I understand the situation, but I thought that such things are unacceptable at such high level

  8. Is the fact that Turpin is appointed for the more decisive game in Group B (Liverpool is qualified for Round of 16, POR-ATM is decisive for both teams) a signal that UEFA has more trust in Turpin as in Makkelie?

It’s interesting because last season Makkelie had more and better appointments

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In the case of a swap between Makkelie and Turpin, MILAN would have two consecutive home games with Turpin. I assume that UEFA primarily wanted to avoid this constellation.

    2. Most likely avoiding negative media attention in advance of the game.

Makkelie didn’t officiate Portugal or any Portuguese club since the incident in Belgrade. And he issued a straight RC for an Atletico player not so long time ago.

      Delete
    3. Don't forget the big focus by Italian media on referees, and Makkelie very often is with Italian teams. I'm sure under the eyes of Rosetti this is a big appointment, and it is for me as well, considering also the fact that this is a very classic European top game. For this reason another very big will be in Bergamo, Taylor is my prediction.

      Delete
    4. After the contested RC in LIV-ATM it was very difficult to see Makkelie again with ATM. Both of them are surely in Top 5 referees at this moment.

      Delete
    5. Like someone on this blog recently commented: avoiding negative media attention (regarding referee appointments) seems nowadays the most important for committee.

Besides that, during the knock-out of CL, it might be interesting to see who gets “the least” appointments. If a top referee gets weaker games during the KO, this is often a sign that a referee is a final candidate and therefore kept under the radar. I remember Mateu being in charge of two EL knock-out games last season. The same applied to Mazic and Skomina.

  10. @ Niklas G

Makkelie has been appointed for five group stage matches, which were all important or decisive. I agree they weren't very big posters, although liverpool atletico and croatia russia were big matches. Precisely by appointing him “safely” in GS he can be appointed with a clean sheet in the KO and perhaps he’s favourite for the UCL final.

  19. Real Madrid is the club, that Brych refereed the most in the CL, now for the 12th time. Could very well be a record.
Curiously, it's the first time, that he has a game of Inter Milan.
The highest-ranked club (based on UEFA coefficients), which he never refereed is FC Basel, followed by Lazio. He did the complete Top25 besides Bayern in his career

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First time Inter really surprises me.

Felix is one of my favourites of this century. For me he is a good example of a natural authority without being too arrogant, a manager who has great communication with players, keeping control without issuing too many cards and last but not last: he has a great ability to let the game flow (not whistling for every breeze). The EURO semi-final was a great game to watch, thanks to the referee :)

I hope he has a great last game!

      Delete
    2. Reason for not having officiated FC Internazionale is that the difficult period of the top club from Milan started after having won CL final with Mourinho in 2010, they didn't reach CL most of times, and the golden times for Brych have been since 2009 - 2010 onwards.
Particular that henever officiated Basel, that is among top clubs, but indeed explanation should be again that the Swiss team was not all the seasons in CL group stage.

  22. Statement by Zwayer
"I would prefer to clarify this in a personal conversation with Jude Bellingham and have offered Borussia Dortmund such a personal conversation.
I'm not interested in punishment, but in [him] realising that he went too far. I would accept a sincere apology.
Bellingham's statement has deliberately created the false impression that I did not manage the match to the best of my ability. It is personal, disparaging and disrespectful.
Even if one puts oneself in the subjective, emotion-driven perspective, the statement remains far from any professional or factual criticism. In particular, the rhetorical inference to the present and future 'What do you expect' has an insulting and defamatory character. This must not be allowed to stand."
When asked whether a referee should never whistle again if he has been convicted of involvement in manipulation, Zwayer replied: "Why should I counter that? I fully agree with this opinion. I have never been involved in match-fixing and that has never been claimed by any official body. The sports tribunal explicitly stated that there was no 'proof' of 'decisions contrary to the sport with the intention of manipulation' and that I 'resisted any actual involvement in match-fixing [...]'."

    2. Further quotes by Zwayer:
"It is also about the radiance on the referees in the amateur sector and the brutalisation in dealing with all referees - including me - off the pitch.
There is a person with emotions and a background behind every referee, player and coach, as well as their families."
"I made the mistake as a young man of not reporting an incident immediately, but only after too much deliberation. That was wrong and I have been punished for it. But that must be the end of it."

  23. Penalty to PSG by Gil Manzano, very soft, close to simulation, but VAR can't intervene. Menawhile, a penalty appeal in Leipzig, correct by VAR to support play on, Schaerer should have whistled it by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 82' Excellent RC by Schaerer. A violent kick from behind without chances to play ball, more violent conduct than SFP.

    ReplyDelete
  25. RC by Schärer for Walker for SFP/violent conduct. Definitely Correct IMO. Generally a (very) good perfromance by the Swiss.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Correct RC for Walker (VC) by Scharer,

Could have been better if he issued the RC straight away rather than try to stop 'physically' the confrontation and then give the RC after isolating player?

    ReplyDelete
  27. At 77" there was an apparent push on a Man City player in Leipzig's penalty box, and Schärer didn't call anything, but it appeared almost as if he was waiting for VAR to intervene. I think some referees may use VAR as a crutch to correct their missed calls, but unfortunately, as we've seen many a time, VAR is loathe to get involved and no one makes the call. But excellent red card later on Walker.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very good remark. Schaerer gave too much the impression of waiting for VAR, indeed just a few seconds after the incident he looked too much worried, starting communication with earphones.
Of course if you miss an incident and you want to know more about it, you must do that, but I would say referees must give always the idea to players that they are absolutely "independent" from the technology, playing on and then having a confrontation with VAR only if the latter calls them. In this case it was correct by VAR to play on, but a strong referee rather says to players: "Let's go on...".

    2. Thanks, Chefren. Yes, it shows a lack of confidence in one's ability to overly rely on VAR.

    1. This penalty is too soft for me. VAR correct to not intervene of course, but the trip was soft and Messi fell on his own accord IMO.

    2. Indeed for me it is a simulation, even more for Italian standards, but VAR can't intervene due to contact.

  29. Some policemen in riot gear are with Brych and the teams in Madrid before entering the field. Anyone know why?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Match management by Scharer was not so good. IMO he was not going to show RC, the timing of the card make me think that he was advices by another on field or off field official.
After that situation, every decision lead to protest (reaction) by the players.
I ecpect referees in CL with better match control.

    2. IMO not a clear red card but never a VAR stuff. Anyway poor management by Letexier

      Delete
    3. OFR regarding the RC, but decision confirmed - rather controversial I think.

      Delete
  37. OFR in Dortmund and Letexier confirmed penalty and RC.
Don't know why this happened, but VAR shouldn't be used in this way.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe VAR thought about a genuine attempt to play the ball, then suggested Letexier to go to the monitor and advise him about YC.
But before there was a quite relevant pushing with the arm, and this is enough to support RC for DOGSO (no attempt to play the ball)IMO.

      Delete
    2. The OFR was definetly because of the RC, as the penalty is very clear.

German commentators disagree with the decision and TV expert Wolfgang Stark (former FIFA referee) stated that he thinks it's a YC only.

      Delete
    3. That was one of the most unnecessary OFRs i have ever seen.

      Delete
    4. For me is never RC. YC would have been better

      Delete
    5. Im OK with YC also but not with OFR. Decision needs to stay live on the pitch.

      Delete
    6. I prefer a YC there due to the near defender (+ the angle). But RC is not a clear and obvious error.
Maybe Letexier based his decision on a wrong perception and therefore was asked to do an OFR? E.g., he might have whistled for a push without seeing the tripping and VAR thought, only the tripping was relevant - or something like that.

      Delete
    7. Seems as I'm in a minority but I think this is a totally correct RC. The player is extremely near to the goal and is directed at it with some speed. The other defender has no realistic chance to fairly stop the attacker from a clear goal scoring opportunity. The offence itself is a pushing and a desperated tripping mpvement without any attempt to reach the ball, so Letexier's penalty + RC (DOGSO 'no attempt') decision is certainly a very good one.
      OFR is rather wrong IMO.

    1. Thanks the for the video, I think that maybe Letexier and VAR had different views on the concept of "genuine attemopt to play ball" or not.
Second explanation is maybe that VAR was sure about SPA and not DOGSO, given the possible intervention of the other defender, but in this case in my opinion would have been rather a wrong intervention because there are some chances to back referee, the foul happens very close to goal, player is going in the right direction, he hasn't to change direction.
I also think that in this situation most of referees would have issued YC, but to summarize, I think VAR was wrong in intervening there.

      Delete
    2. IMO penalty + YC, very harsh RC. The pushing with the arm was very soft. I think Rosetti will not be happy with this decision.

      Delete
    3. I think it's pretty easily a yellow. I can only assume based on previous RAP videos that UEFA treats a trip as an attempt to play the ball in situations where there have been a clip or coming together of feet. I think this is a more borderline intervention from VAR, but I can see why it was sent down.

  40. Anyone know if this is Brych final international game?

  41. Spanish VARs for Rumsas are in Kyiv and not in Nyon, source: Estrada Fernandez on Twitter.

  42. 50' blatant protests by AC Milan for a penalty to be whistled by Makkelie but definitely good decision to play on by the Dutch. No contact between legs, just some upper contact, but in my opinion not enough for whistling.

Not at all, but People should not put their hands on each other. Great RC by Turpin who does what he can IMO. Even Kuipers or Brych would struggle here

    1. No Card. However, in some positions it was necessary

      Delete
    2. Makkelie had an excellent feeling for the game. Cards were not mandatory, also because of good behaviour of players. Full control and acceptance by everyone. Very enjoyable to watch his management and personality comparing to what I saw in Porto. No players complain to Makkelie, they fully trust his leadership and decisions. In Italian media nobody talks about the referee and that’s the most important. Felix Brych was also very good tonight. Full control and acceptance for his decisions. Great farewell of a big career he had. Turpin lost totally control and because he is too much arrogant and not investing in players relationship, he will never be a good choice for this kind of hot matches. Cakir, Makkelie and Taylor are the right referees for these challenges. Because the are calm and respectful.

      Delete
    3. MIL - LIV:
In first half there were two situations were Makkelie could have issued a YC to a Milan player. Honestly, it was a nice gesture to the Italian side (who got a very easy 2YC in the Atletico game) that he kept the cards in the pocket.

In second half he could have issued a YC to Liverpool player for an arm pull, but if a Ref already "saved" Milan twice, I can understand why it wasn't issued. Balancing things up, which is indeed a good feeling for the game. The same applied to the penalty appeals: both for a single arm push. Soft calls IMO and those indicidents are never whistled in my country. Maybe in other countries it is different.

By the way, interesting stats. Makkelie was in charge of 23 matches this season and not a single PK whistled. The referees must be intructed by UEFA this summer to not whistle soft penalties anymore.

  72. POR - ATL:

I don't know about Turpin. He already looked angry when he entered the pitch. Also when he issued the RC he looks angry and stressed. Like if he is losing control. Just compare that to Brych issuing the RC to Barella: you can clearly see a strong, calm and confident man.

I tend to agree with David. Don't get me wrong, Turpin is a good referee but his style is just not very suitable for hot, emotional, challenging clashes or when players are really dirty. POR-ATL requires a referee that is managing the players for 90 minutes.

    1. Penalty to Porto was too soft for my taste.

  73. I just watched Turpin's performance in POR-ATM. Here are my thoughts.

2 or 3 minutes into the game there was a challenge that definitely warranted a yellow card for a studs-to-foot contact. Turpin only called a foul, and I think this incident was a bad way to start out the match for him. It was always going to be a feisty match, but perhaps the YC here would have made things easier. Maybe it wouldn't have. But I think it was a miss either way.

Throughout the match, Turpin was very consistent in his foul selection. He was, for my taste, too lenient; there were a number of challenges that seemed like clear fouls that he allowed the teams to play through. Perhaps this leniency contributed to the mess that we saw, don't blame Turpin in this sense. I will speak more to his consistency in foul selection below.

Turpin's second half was really good! The first 20 minutes were relatively uneventful, and then the red cards brought everything to life. Two correct decisions and I really appreciate his management in both situations. On the first one, after showing the red card, he continued to (quite calmly, I must say) book 3 more players before play restarted, including one near the box only just before the free kick was taken. Then on the second red card, he also sent off two people from the benches, before sending off another one in the 75th minute. This is for sure my favorite thing about Turpin's refereeing approach: he doesn't coddle players and let them get away with such foolishness without repercussions! His response, especially when discussing with both captains after the second incident, seemed like one of "You guys want to act like idiots? Fine, I don't care. The cards you get are a problem for you, not for me." I love that! In this way, I don't look at 5 red cards and say "Turpin lost control", but to me, they are a sign that he was actually quite in control of these tense moments: he correctly identified a lot of misconduct and punished it all accordingly. After that, the remaining 15 minutes were quite simple, because everybody knew that if they did something stupid, Turpin was going to call them out for it. I admire this approach by Turpin in not being afraid to show a lot of cards when the teams deserve it, including red ones.

Back to the subject of foul selection, I thought there was a clear push by an attacker on the wing just prior to the third Atleti goal. Gringore has a perfect view of it, but to me it's a very clear foul and should have been whistled. Prior to the late goals, there was also a high arm by an Atleti defender to the head of a Porto player near midfield that I think Turpin missed. These no-calls are very consistent with his quite lenient approach throughout the rest of the match, so at least there's that, but really, I think his approach was too lenient throughout. Perhaps even a slightly tighter foul selection, even if he has to make this adjustment mid-game and sacrifice some consistency, would have helped avoid these problems.

Finally, no issues with the penalty decision really late on.

So, in summary, I don't think Turpin did everything he should have been able to do to try to settling things down in this game, but other than that, I think it was an impressive performance. I only put a small amount of blame on him for the ugly path the match took, and this blame is overshadowed by his great work during the tense incidents of the second half.

    1. Partly disagree. I truly underline that this was the most difficult game this round and indeed, almost all referees would struggle.

Turpin handled well when the game escalated, however a referee should always ask himself: was it preventable to issue so many RC's? IMO yes.

      Some topics:
      -Player management
      -Issuing mandatory YC's
      -Too much leniency

In the beginning I appreciated the leniency. It can give a strong signal to players that dives and theatre is not rewarded. However, when the game becomes rougher and players more emotional, a referee should keep things more short and sweet. This is all about feeling the game.

      Delete
  74. In my opinion Turpin lacks something very important: applying the "correct" line of physical play.

-In games between teams that are well-known for their good behaviour - for example English or German teams - Turpin COULD be a bit more lenient sometimes. I have seen him in a couple matches this season were he whistled for many small things.
-In yesterday's game between Porto and Atlético, he was too lenient.

Therefore, he needs to improve his feeling of the game to keep control of the game.

The first RC was supportable. The second RC was too harsh. The PK was absolutely wrong.

No way Turpin should be in charge of Portugal games in the play-off. Now I can only see Taylor in a potential Portugal-Italy final.

    1. Let's be honest. Turpin's points for improvement are exactly the same as a few years ago. Unfortunately, there is little development

  75. When looking at yesterdays match Porto - Atletico I think there really are two sides to the story regarding Turpin's performance.

First of all, he took a quite lenient approach in the first 60 minutes of the match. That's not a very bad choice in a match like this for me, because keeping it very short might also cause a lot of stoppages and small irritations.

But then building up to that first outburst (the one where Carrasco was sent off) the game was already getting a bit more tense. Was it recognized by Turpin? Did he change his approach? Not visible, at least not for me. I think he could have done a bit more here. Then the first outburst comes and we see a close-up of Turpin frowning and waving players away. He does not seem to have a lot of contact with players here. Sending off Carrasco is correct, but I think he could have done more here to manage the situation, maybe take a little bit more time to make sure that everyone is cooled down a bit, have a chat with the captains, maybe some other key players, resolve the situation near the box not only by showing Pepe a yellow card but also by talking to players here, connecitng with them.

He didn't do any of these things and then a few minutes later the bigger fight occurred. We don't know if he could have avoided this, but I'm sure he could have done more here to prevent it. Now, once in this situation, Turpin definitely stepped in. Showed the cards that needed to be shown and had a quite intense chat with the captains. This is where he connects with the key players again and where he regains control. That's very well done, regaining control over such a difficult match after everything that happened. In the remaining 20 minutes the heat extinguished and Turpin was in full control over the match.

I think managing the first situation is the 'old' Turpin. He does not seem to connect with players, maybe looking even a bit arrogant there. What he did at the end of the second situation and afterwards is the 'new' Turpin and he kept the game and himself alive there.

So, I disagree with Hans, I think Turpin definitely improved over the last couple of years. Looking back on this game, it was a game with extreme difficulty, he made some mistakes (RC Wendell and penalty both very soft IMO) but what he definitely did right was, as Chefren and Quilava pointed out earlier, keeping the game alive and himself in it, by managing that second outburst very well.

So would I appoint him for a potentially heated match like this one in the near future? Maybe not, but he certainly did not lose his spot among top5/top8 UEFA referees for me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you Marko. You exactly wrote down what I tried to describe earlier. Indeed, Turpin has definitely improved and I also consider him as top 5-8 at this moment. Agree that he could have done more to prevent the outbursts in terms of managing players and connecting with players. In particular the captains.

I'm actually glad that Turpin got this heated game with much at stake. When looking at his appointments of the last 3 seasons, he didn't officiate a heated challenging game between two southern teams in the CL knock-out phase. Mostly the typical North-European teams with good behaviours. Nothing comparable to the game yesterday.

So it's good that he got a shot in a game where emotions run so high. I think these kind of challenging games will truly help him to further improve.
