  1. Crucial match for Zwayer after a hectic weekend

    1. I think there will be more eyes than usual on him for this game.

    2. Actually I don't really understand this appointment after Saturday. And besides, that Zwayer gets this kind of matches is still really weird looking at his history, but that's another discussion.

  2. 3 Italian refs? Well done Rosetti. 🙄

    ReplyDelete
  3. Biggest matches prepared for Mateu, Zwayer, Del Cerro, Guida and Jug. Kind of expected though I am not a fan of Zwayer and Del Cerro.

  4. Fratelli d’Italia,
    l’Italia s’è desta!

It's absurd that five Italian referees are appointed in matches in CL/EL. Orsato, Mariani and Guida with crucial matches in their group.

Good to see some second group referees in this phase to gain some VAR experience!

  5. Now after MD6 appointments, it's time to release all UEFA VAR appointments.

    VAR FULL LIST: https://docdro.id/oMdB8uc
    VAR TOP TOTAL: https://docdro.id/KTXqZs0
    VAR TOP VAR: https://docdro.id/Fc1Uaa2

Please let me know if you find any mistakes, everythings has been added manually so it wouldn't surprise me if something is wrong :D
Also if you'd like to see a individual list of most VAR appointments in CL/EL; a specific country; etc. just let me know. :)

  6. At first let me say if you ask me: "Are Italian referees overused?"
I can't answer "no". I must admit, many Italian referees in crucial games, Guida in Braga is the first to mention, and then Mariani in London. Third one for Di Bello. Velasco Carballo appointment seems interesting to read, because it can give clues about the possible new role for him in UEFA, the game is decisive and the referee is followed by committee (Vassaras previous observer in FIN - FRA). We will see whether any announcement about Velasco will be made sooner or later. Then, important for Mariani as well in London, but he has to renounce to CL debut.
Zwayer with a decisive game in Spain, so we can absolutely draw conclusion that nothing has changed for UEFA, and it is fair. In case of a different opinion, they shouldn't have started any focus on him since the beginning of his international career, but not now.
I hope that he can bear criticisms showing a good performance.
Then, del Cerro and Mateu both in the games of Italian teams at home, del Cerro had already officiated Napoli, and now he will be in Rome, and another Spanish for Napoli, Mateu. The troubles in appointing Spanish referees in CLA have determined this outcome, however, I still think that there are too few options. Very good game in all cases for Mateu, we were discussing about him in previous days.
Stieler with a decisive game as well, at least I'm happy for him, but less sonorous than other matches.

    1. Which is sad and undeserved. He had really a good international career, without many controversies.

      Delete
    2. Nijhuis insulted and mocked UEFA colleagues, he can be happy that committee didn't take any further legal action against him.

  8. No matches on MD5/6 for Ekberg, Kulbakov, Frankwoski, Hernandez, Oliver and Visser. That's surprising given that so many referees needed to be used on both matchdays. Probably they all are unavailable or out of favour.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oliver is probably punished for he wrong RC in BVB-AJA. I`m am surprised to see Hernandez and Ekberg on this list. For the rest is understandable.

      Delete
    2. I am very curious what UEFA will do with Andreas Ekberg next winter. He only got 1 CL match this year, despite of being at the EURO.

Furthermore I don't like this management of Rosetti. Why give Massa a useless CL match (as a 4th match!) while there are other referees who needs this experience.

      Delete
    3. I am also curious about Ekberg. Before this summer his promotion would have been certain. But now it feels that something has changed.

      Delete
    4. I really don't like the treatment of Oliver.

In my opinion the straight RC in BVB-Ajax was based from Oliver's view quite understandable. It was a hard reckless tackle and the Ajax player acted very well (which he does every weekend). It was a big mistake by VAR not to intervene. The same applies the penalty, wrong intervention, however in the end Oliver was responsible and he could have ignored the VAR.

      Delete
  9. Remarkable, that Stieler's VAR Günter Perl is not part of the FIFA VMO list and also not planned to be included next year. He is however the most experienced Bundesliga VAR (~140 games).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When you read such names, it means that UEFA has allowed national federation to make VAR's apppointment without particular requirements, and this is another signal that they don't care too much about Stieler games... (speaking frankly).

      Delete
    2. Unger isnt a UEFA AR, is he?

      Delete
    3. Indeed. And it's his first European match.
But AR2 is not always a FIFA official on this stage.
Germany has 5 referee teams appointed this week. With Foltyn and Gittelmann at the Arab Cup and Schiffner injured, only 7 FIFA assistants are available, so 3 non-FIFA ARs are working (Sinn, Unger and Kempter).

      Delete
    4. Thank you for the numbers Philipp.

      Delete
    5. Pickel is Number 4 (Beitinger injured)

      Delete
    6. Right, even 4 non-FIFA ARs this week. But Beitinger is working - Seidel is the other one missing.

      Delete
    7. Betinger ferito , come mai ?

      Delete
  10. Just my guess, I think we will not have to wait so much.

  11. Three reckless vs SFP incidents from CL MD6 (stamps on ankle or above). All of them had the same outcome: YC given, no VAR intervention.

For me in those circumstances, it comes down to force. SALSEV the player is not running, force is quite low, so I'm happy with YC. The other two situations are a RC for me, with VARint prefered. I would like to hear other oppinions and considerations.

  12. Correct penalty decision + YC (41’) by Felix Zwayer after a punishable handball by PSV defender Mwene, throwing himself in front of a shot on goal with the arm out of the body.

    2. Uhff, to be honest I don’t think this is a punishable handball. The arm is not that far from the body in a rather natural position and the ball hits the hand with high speed. The slomos make it look more punishable, but in real speed there’s nothing the defender can do. In my view this was an incorrect OFR.

    3. Perfect decision by Zwayer, penalty and YC. Good positioning.

    1. This will be borderline decision, for sure, for German readers, or even wrong, while I agree with Spanish VARs.
I would add as remark, Italian and Spanish VARs have very similar ideas and management of handballs, that's very good.

    3. Haha you are absolutely right Chefren :D
For me, being German, it's a (rather) wrong intervention. Arm not far away from the body and the distance is really close. But tbh I don't know what is and what isn't handball anymore.

      Delete
    4. Your last sentence is how it works for handballs nowadays.

      Delete
    5. For me also a natural hand position.
But the hand slightly moves into the path of the ball, therefore the penalty is supportable IMO.
As Anonymous writes, it only looks like that in slow-motion, so his argument is also very valid.
So the OFR is quite doubtful for me (even for a "missed incident") - but once at the monitor, I would not call the PK a mistake.

  14. Great first half by Taylor as usual, especially the no penalty decision at 34'. A few years ago, because of his age and consideration for Oliver, no one could have thought Taylor would become one of the top 4/5 in Europe. Rosetti made a masterpiece .

  16. 2nd YC in SPP-BRO
    https://streamja.com/LVbwA

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Other referees could have assessed it as careless, however I think supportable decision, if not fully correct. The question is about intensity, I think player opens his arm to keep the opponent at distance, without a real intent to hit. Of course, that's not the only criterion to consider, but in my opinion NO YC wouldn't have been maybe a mistake, the intensity of the touch in face is not clear.

      Delete
    2. I think this is an excellent decision because the defender exactly knows where the ball will be played and that it would be very dangerous to let the attacker pass down the wing. So he makes this kind of a very early tactical foul, what is clearly an unsporting act in my eyes and therefore correctly cautioned.

      Delete
    3. I would also say, that one can make a point for SPA here. It's not totally obvious, but the attacker would have a clear path on the wing without the ball.

      Delete
    4. For me correct YC. It is a cynical action, 'lack of respect for the game' an option? If not, than reckless is also good IMO.

      Delete
  17. 74' Red card to PSV by Zwayer. For me not wrong, but I'm not sure if it's a mandatory second yellow card?

    2. I agree. More careless than reckless and therefore better to just whistle the foul.

      Delete
    3. Similar to SPP-BRO posted above, in this case clear contact fingers - mouth but is that enough? No pressure, just a touch.
In my opinion rather careless, difficult to see in detail for referee, assessing it as reckless shouldn't be seen as evident mistake, but rather a too harsh decision.

      Delete
    4. I agree with the technical evaluation of all the readers above, but I think in situations like this real top referees can be recognized. True top referees feel that a 2nd YC doesn’t fit the match at that particular moment, and even makes the temperature to rise. And that is exactly what happened after the 2nd YC. Instead of keeping things calm, Zwayer’s decision made the atmosphere worse.

      Delete
    5. Supportable decision, the contact is clear.

    1. Indeed a replay shows that there wasn't any contact with ball, not easy for Jug, however in my opinion VAR should be used for very clear situations, here a detailed analysis is needed and when it is not a classic "step on foot" or clear contact, one can still discuss... however, penalty to be whistled, let me be clear, but it is also interesting to talk about the circumstance.

      Delete
    2. Come on…. What’s left of UEFA’s high bar of intervention? There’s only a minimal contact at the lower leg, the attacker first puts his leg on the ground and then decides to dive like a dying swan… No penalty, rather simulation, and clearly no intervention IMHO.

      Delete
    3. You’re absolutely right..soft penalty at the crucial episode. Lucky to he didn’t score

      Delete
    4. IMO bad intervention by Sánchez Martínez as VAR. I have a lot of doubts with this penalty, I don't see a clear contact in the replay.

  20. Missed penalty by Stieler in Bulgaria? Strange there was no VAR intervention...

    1. yes, really odd? he already hat the whistle in his mouth?

    3. https://streamable.com/dsp5r2
Clear kick to opponent, penalty to be whistled, missed by Stieler. Big discussions about VAR: I think Perl assessed it as not enough for an intervention because rather casual contact?
But that's more and more evident than many other VAR interventions we saw in other games...

      Delete
    4. About the possible offside, impossible to say 100% but player should be rather ONSIDE, long ball from defender and when he appears he is still in line, so surely he started onside.
I think that Perl assessed not significant for an OFR.
      One can realy discuss.

      Delete
    5. sorry but that's a clear penalty, or am i wrong? for me defender tries to kick the ball away, but only hits the leg of the attacker. thats a silly foul - clumsy one might call it...not a hard foul, but surely enough for intervention, right?

      Delete
    6. Yeah that does look quite clear.

Just for information, Perl is known for not intervening unless it is very very clear; caused some controversy here in Germany as well in a few matches :/

      Delete
    7. thank you chefren for quick upload...in my eyes, pictures show clear evidence...i dont see a reason how this is NOT a penalty?

      Delete
    8. To be honest, I am not surprised because Perl is involved. He already got a suspension because of non-interventions this season. I think he is a replacement for Stegemann in this match.

      Delete
    9. Stegemann did not intervene in GAL-MAR for wrong PK. So, Perl may have been sent to this match.

      Delete
    10. IMO more penalty than Jug's one

  21. Correct penalty by Guida in Braga, raised arm, I would say not easy because I needed some replays, it looked like a header at first glance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Another correct PK by Guida, this time for Crvena Zvezda (striking)

      Delete
    2. Very brave decision, however I want to say that for Italian standards this second penalty can look like an easy call. Never a mistake, but I think most of referees wouldn't have whistled, rather unexpected to sanction it, but replay shows clear careless action with elbow and the call is therefore correct. YC would have been a mistake. I praise Guida for his attention in penalty areas.

      Delete
    3. Velasco Carballo will be satsfied... I think Guida will become an elite by next year

      Delete
    4. I think the favorites for promotion in December are Guida, Jovanovic and of course Siebert. And by June Gözübüyük, Ekberg, Scharer and Massa could ascend.
I see Stieler, Kulbakov, Sidiropoulos and, above all, Kruzliak in danger of descending.

      Delete
  22. Shouldn’t that have been a penalty in favor of Olympique Marseille (OLY-LMO - 71.)? Lokomotiv defender stepped out and hit the opponent’s knee without playing the ball.

    2. And now a possible SFP (studs on shin) in 87. YC issued to Tiknizyan (LMO)

      Delete
    3. i see rather the attacker running in the knee/foot that is placed down on the ground long before the attacker himself initiates the contact with the defender...

      Delete
    4. But the attacker is just running normally, while the defender puts his leg in the attacker's path. I don't think the attacker could avoid the contact - or even has the duty to do so. Penalty IMO.

      Delete
    5. Well, I respectfully disagree. The time interval between placing the foot and the contact is far from “long” IMO, and the attacker simply wants to get to the ball. It’s the defender putting his leg in the path of the attacker.

      Delete
    6. I agree with Philipp here, one can't say how much attacker could have avoided contact, looks like he just wanted to create a contact to get penalty. Of course, the action by defender to put leg stays, but never a clear penalty for me.

      Delete
    6. The intensity seems high enough, and it wasnt mutual fight. Based on this replay, Id say that it should have definitely been a pk.

      Delete
    7. However, let me say, we wonder why committe doesn't appoint Stieler in CL anymore, well, based on his performance there is indeed a reason, mostly all mistakes in crucial incidents, but before his promotion to Elite, one year ago, he looked to be a totally different referee, I'm really sorry for that.

Clear RC, hitting point, excessive force, studs.
A clear mistake by Dutch VARs in my opinion, 100% intervention.

    2. Hmm, that’s very particular, because last weekend Lindhout also missed a very clear RC as VAR in Dutch match FC Groningen - PEC Zwolle

    1. This looks like a PK. Defender gets if any, only a marginal contact on the ball and the-fallow through is reckless IMO.
