Good game for Peljto. Marciniak has an important game as well. I’m curious who is appointed for Ukraine-Italy now. My first idea was that UEFA swapped Letexier and Zwayer’s games, but after seeing 4 German crews already (Siebert, Schlager, Osmers, Stegeman), it would be surprising to see a 5th one. Is Zwayer injured?
ReplyDeleteUkraine-Italy could be Gil Manzano though.
No injury, as far as I know. I think when we consider the historic background of the italian match, the committee trusts Letexier more and I think they are right doing so. In heated gamey Zwayer tends to losing any line if not panicking...
DeleteSanchez gets important match.
ReplyDeleteThis time it's Albania and Poland,2 teams that play very phisical, especially Albania and that match is potential decider for 2nd place.
Will be interesting to see if he'll be changed man and start to officiate as he shoule.
Without leniency and without talking.
It’s quite strange for me Urs S. only 2nd cat ref with German VAR get FRAIRL and Peljto with Dallas get IRLNED and then Balakin after several games in focus for him now get San Marino.
ReplyDeleteAnd the last here we go again Sanchez Martinez with no card style and very physical game.
DeleteSanchez appointment was made before PSV-Rangers? :)
ReplyDelete1. Portuguese VAR for German, why?
ReplyDelete2. No Ukrainian VMOs this time eventhough it was San Marino, maybe after previous error from Kopiievskyi iinm.
3. Very very good signal for Bebek for his future maybe his career redemption (Euro 2024 for him?)
4. DCG immediately become very trusted VAR and IMO he guaranteed his slot in EURO 2024 ahead mediocre De Burgos
I agree on most of the points, sometimes VAR choices are really strange, Portuguese VAR with German crew is another example of that. Would have been very easy to send all German officials in Kazakhstan.
DeleteBebek can become a big option as VAR because from a rather very neutral country, no big teams in top competitions from Croatia. He can be appointed for many games.
He distinguished himself for a very long career as FIFA referee (2003 - 2022), now he can continue with VAR for a very long time. No Ukrainian for San Marino particular as well.
Carlos Del Cerro Grande has a big trust, but it is not difficult to be better than De Burgos. I say that from a very neutral point of view, the Spanish showed very often also a clear lack of knowledge. Among the recent Spanish FIFA referees, in my opinion he was definitely the only name clearly out of context... with an enormous gap to other referees.
Schlager with boring 1st half in Astana. Just good call to punish KAZ player for simulation. For German readers Schlager vs Jablonski, who will you choose? IMO from the appearance Jablonski in front.
ReplyDeleteboth great talents for me
DeleteIn Bundesliga Aytekin and Jablonski are clearly in front of all the others...

ReplyDeleteWhat should be a decision of a referee?
How is this not a RC for Ronaldo? Absolutely terrible from Nyberg and van Boekel.
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/Juanin1Oi/status/1700239758486589525?s=20
I'm not the first fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, but here I think we must be realist. He was late, trying to reach ball, keeper made it before him. Clear foul because the Portuguese arrived later, but I don't think you can discuss about a clear red card. YC is the expected decision, giving the benefit of the doubt that Portuguese didn't want to hurt keeper. You know that when keepers are lying on the ground, making saves, they risk more than other players, but this doesn't mean that they must be treated differently. I don't see a RC here.
DeleteAnd Nyberg managed it quite well in his 'active' style.
DeleteFrom what I see from Schlager during the last 2 seasons, I can easily say that he is head and shoulders above anybody else in Germany... Another exemplary performance today in Kazakhstan.
ReplyDeleteIMO quite good performance by Schlager in (often difficult) Kazakhstan.
ReplyDeleteAs yesterday, there was another DtR incident with the benches, in this case the Kazakh substituted player was also given a YC.
I saw most of Kazakhstan - Northern Ireland and I definitely agree with comments above. Maybe one match is not enough to judge a referee, but I liked his style, I observed some skills that are always missing in the other German referees at top level: quickness, reaction to incidents, showing card procedures, but, first all, a certain "severe" approach with a strong body language, that was never, just to make an example, shown by Siebert and the others. I think that if this is his style in all games, he can be definitely above all for the next promotions. If time will allow me, I will post some clips...
ReplyDeleteCannot say anything about the match, but I can confirm that it totally sounds like his normal style. Referee being able to let the game flow or not, very strict in respect to unsporting behaviour by the players and IMO always giving a card if necessary. Compared to other referees, more he pursues more a "law in the book“ approach. Could work quite well with teams from Southern Europe…
DeleteBut for me Schlager take big risk to allow last attack from NIR, we can see yesterday in Turkey, Orsato blew his final whistle 7 seconds early and I can’t imagine if NIR scored at their last attack because one can argument that 6’ added time it’s too much.
ReplyDeleteIgor Pajac will be the new Croatian cat1 referee right ? I am watching him on Hungary-Czechia. He is extremly poor, more than lenient style. Teams dont understand him. He missed a lot of foul, extremly poor card management on a challenging match. No yellow for foul, 3 yellow for dissent. If his style will continue in the future he will have huge problems.
ReplyDeleteHot game now for Osmers in Montenegro.
ReplyDeleteTop game from young Schlager again. As Chefren said : quickness, reaction to incidents, showing card procedures, very strong body language.
ReplyDeleteAbout Sanchez I agree with all of you tonight huge test for him after very poor lenient performance in Eindhoven.
I am sure he has learned his lesson and even watched Marciniak early today how you handle this games. Almost sure he will start early with yellow cards this time to gain full control in this super important game.
Osmers very very good again, for me best German referee after Schlager.
The best german referee is Jablonski!
DeleteYes, better as Osmers or Schlager. He is the greatest german Talent.
DeleteNot True! The best german referee is Alexander Sather!
DeleteIn Germany, yes, but internationally he has to prove himself more as his style can be considered very German, just like Gräfe and Aytekin. As you know, they failed internationally; Osmers’ and Schlager’s style is better suited or international football
DeleteIt's not true. Jablonski is also an international great talent.
DeleteHe’s a talent for sure, but the definition of a talent is that they need to develop and prove themselves. In my opinion, Jablonski has higher potential than any other German referee, but the risk of him failing internationally is also bigger compared to, for example, Schlager. Time will tell!
DeleteThe first top game in the Bundesliga is on Friday.
DeleteBayern Munich - Bayer Leverkusen let's see who gets the trust from the DFB
In Bundesliga Aytekin and Jablonski are clearly in front. But its true, if we regard Brych internationally and in Bundesliga, thus IS another pair of shoes. If Jablonski learns to adapt himself quicker to the character of the match and improves his body language, he will be a top elite referee for sure - Osmers is a big talent and like Schlager his style matches well with international clashes, they both act bravely, but Osmers must learn not to act in a hectic way and Schlager yet has to find a more consistent line of foul detection. Talking about big talents in Germany we still have the young Badstübner, being very promising. So the times of great German refs will be back soon, dont worry.
DeleteReally good spot by Peljto in real time
ReplyDeletePeljto with a correct early penalty call for handball to Ireland.
ReplyDeleteVery quick in whistling it.
Meanwhile, game already suspended in Albania, I really want to see which style whill use the Spanish...
First YC in minute 8'. He reads the blog :)
DeleteYes indeed . 😀
DeleteI really think that Peljto will also have tough match, both teams started the game very agressive and had some crunching tackles.
DeleteAnd Sanchez, hopefully he continues with this line.
Correct first YC ,given in right time by Peljto.
DeleteYe good to see
ReplyDeleteI hope Peljto won’t be too lenient in his card management. Game will be rough
ReplyDeleteMissed RC in San Marino in 7'. The injured player was substituted a couple of minutes later.
ReplyDeleteAnother correct penalty and yc in Dublin
ReplyDeleteWhat supposed to do the gk, disappear?
DeleteGreat Peljto!
ReplyDeleteAbsolut not....
DeleteDisallowed goal POL by VAR. AR1 not to blame very tight one. Problem with the communication between Sanchez and VAR. He went to the fourth official who told him about offside call
ReplyDeleteYC 42’ not necessary and unexpected from Pejlto. Other than that, excellent first half
ReplyDeleteYes, and ‘8 should have been a yellow card for me, very reckless foul on NED #22.
DeleteOther than that, full control after a challenging start
So weird watching Sanchez today and his last game.
ReplyDeleteTonight, good from him that he learned from his mistakes.
All 3 cards for fouls are correct and 1 for protests.
Good from him, that's what we expect if he wants to be future number 1 in Spain.
+1 about disciplinary sanctions.
DeleteExcellent in foul detection and always waiting for a possible advantage
Mistake, 5 cards at HT,Asllani also received it.
DeleteSanchez doing well. Lessons have been learned
ReplyDelete3-0 for Greece was disallowed by VAR for offside (37')
ReplyDeleteGreat Sanchez tonight,no tolerancy at all.
ReplyDeleteAlready booked GK for timewasting and we have 30 minutes to go.
First mistake by Sanchez cristal clear 2YC not given for nr 10 POL for SPA
DeleteNo tolerance at all,11 cards so far.
DeleteIt seems Sánchez turns a better referee here with each card he gives 😂
Delete13 YC’s
DeleteSanchez either too lenient or the game ends in a card fest? Where is middle ground
You have to watch the match. Absolutely spot on each YC
DeleteImo you can’t say the referee had a good game if he needs 13 YC’s. Even in a very challenging game. I mean, it’s a record. It could be his rather reactive approach instead of proactive. Or lack of management skills to calm down players
DeleteHe whistles a good match, but in my opinion Peltjo's reactions to some incidents (like '65) are too much. He makes the players wilder instead of calmer
ReplyDeleteSo to highlight Sanchez tonight:
ReplyDelete-13 Yc's
-plenty of them for fouls, couple for protest ,couple for unsporting behaviour and one for timewasting
-Started early and continued with same line entire match, consistent enough
-controled match from beggining to the end,and that wasn't easy if we have on mind how important this match was and how hostile was the enviroment
-maybe one bigger mistake was to not book POL #10 and give him 2nd YC(RC)but I feel like he wanted to avoid that
Hopefully, that same Sanchez will be there for entire season and not having his hot or cold matches.
13 YCs is a new competition record beating the 12 by Collum in ROU-HUN 2014.
DeleteIf this is already enough to forget and redeem Sanchez for his catastrophe in Eindhoven then Rosetti needs to send Lindhout and Taylor to matches of italian teams ASAP. They deserve second chances too in that case.
DeleteTaylor doesn’t even need a second chance because he didn’t mess up in the first place…
DeleteI’m happy to read that Sanchez did well tonight, but I do agree and wonder if Nyberg (to mention a random name from a less prominent nation) would receive such an important game in such a short time as well (Manzano was available if it needed to be a Spanish ref). Obviously one game shouldn’t determine his entire season, but others are examples of referees needing months or even years to regain trust for a game like this
No one is forgetting terible night that he had in Eindhoven.
DeleteBut,if this match indicates that he learned from his mistakes, then I'm happy for him.
Would want to see Sanchez in a
ReplyDeleteFew champions league games before judging to see if he has learned from past mistakes
We can be sure that Sanchez will be appointed in Group F UCL soon. The toughest group. Not because he had a great start of the season, but the Ref com will be in trouble to find neutral and experienced officials for the 12 games in that group. One of the few groups that is available for Spanish refs. I guess we can pencil Gil Manzano and Hdz Hdz as well
ReplyDeleteGermans, English, Italian, French out
DeleteThat leaves: 1. Gil Manzano, 2. Hernandez, 3. Sanchez
4. Kovacs, 5. Vincic, 6. Marciniak. Dias if recovered. Maybe Peljto, Gozubuyuk, Meler? Some names to work twice
Are you forgot Nyberg? Like it or not Refcom need to take the risk to appoint new neutral talented elite referees like Nyberg and Peljto and maybe names like Kruzliak and Meler.
DeleteI’m not sure Nyberg will work in group F tbh. You can compare group F with Group B in 2021/2022 season where we just saw the most experienced names with plenty of
Deleteknock-out experience, and some officials were used twice. Nyberg is the most promising Elite referee but don’t forget he only had 2 UCL games experience. I hope he is not pushed like Siebert. The easiest game in group F is probably Newcastle vs Dortmund. I can see a lower ranked ref in that game, e.g. Peljto, Gozubuyuk, Meler, Hernandez, however I don’t see any of those names in Milan vs PSG or Newcastle vs PSG
My prediction:
DeleteYoung Boys - Leipzig: Rade Obrenovic
AC Milan - Newcastle: Danny Makkelie
Manchester City - Estrella Roja: João Pinheiro
PSG - Dortmund: Istvan Kovacs
Feyenoord - Celtic: Clément Turpin
Lazio - Atlético de Madrid: Francois Letexier
Barcelona - Royal Antwerp: Marco Guida
Shakhtar Donetsk - Porto: Tobias Stieler
Real Madrid - Union Berlin: Espen Eskas
Galatasaray - Copenhague: Alejandro Hernández
Braga - Napoli: Michael Oliver
Bayern Munich - Manchester United: Jesús Gil Manzano
Benfica - Salzburg: Halil Umut Meler
Real Sociedad - Inter Milan: Glenn Nyberg
Sevilla - Lens: Ivan Kruzliak
Arsenal - PSV: Szymon Marciniak
Peljto is same with Nyberg, newly promoted and only have minor match in UCL.
DeleteYes, you are right but I think that this season the committee will bet on him for big games. Following these predictions, I save Vincic for Ajax-Marseille, Sanchez for Brighton-AEK, Jovanovic for Rangers-Betis, Taylor for Panathinaikos-Villarreal and Peljto for Olympiakos-Friburgo
DeletePeljto has 7 games in UCL, worked on a UCL play-off this season and is already 39 years old. Refcom has a reason to push him, whereas Nyberg has plenty of time. No need to rush him.
Delete@Diego: Nice predictions. I see you really puzzled with the neutrality and observer names. I thought Nyberg could be the referee we’ll see under Rosetti, or did he already observe him?
DeleteSmall remark, as a NL based person, I think Turpin in the Kuip stadium is still a bit tricky after the incidents years ago. We all know he massively improved and is one of the best referees atm, but Feyenoord Ultras still remember…
Regarding Makkelie, I also thought of him in MIL-NEW, as I can’t see him with PSG or Dortmund, however his form is still a mystery after he missed the QF’s last season. Probably an injury, cause his fitness level has dropped. In the Dutch competition, he struggles with fast counter attacks. Therefore I would be surprised to see him in a big game like that instantly. I rather think they won’t push him. Maybe Europa League, maybe a lower profile UCL game to work his way back to the top
@diego: I don't think, all the big names will be used on MD1. Normally referees don't do two matches on MD1&2 and there are also several big games on MD2.
DeleteMy predictions (VAR in brackets)
Young Boys - Leipzig: Frappart (Delajod)
AC Milan - Newcastle: Gil Manzano (Martinez)
Manchester City - Estrella Roja: Hernandez (de Burgos)
PSG - Dortmund: Kovacs (Guida)
Feyenoord - Celtic: Jovanovic (Dankert)
Lazio - Atlético de Madrid: Taylor (Attwell)
Barcelona - Royal Antwerp: Mariani (di Bello)
Shakhtar Donetsk - Porto: Zwayer (Fritz)
Real Madrid - Union Berlin: Rumsas (Kwiatkowski)
Galatasaray - Copenhague: Treimanis (Martins)
Braga - Napoli: Grinfeeld (Reinshreiber)
Bayern Munich - Manchester United: Orsato (Irrati)
Benfica - Salzburg: Meler (Bitigen)
Real Sociedad - Inter Milan: Gözübüyük (van Boekel)
Sevilla - Lens: Dabanovic (Higler)
Arsenal - PSV: Massa (Valeri)
I don’t know why many users predict FRAPPART, did she super referee? It’s mindblowing that many users still in favor of Frappart over another female referees, like Martincic, Foster, etc. I mean her time is over, why u often mentioned her, with all respect this is embarrassing that many of us acts like the refcom in 2019 when Frappart chosen as the referee for Super Cup.
DeleteShe’s only CATEGORY 1 and this is UCL, did you have special reason always predict Frappart?
DeleteIf we still predict or at the end the refcom appoint Frappart after catasthropic performance in WWC, isn’t this is same as humiliation for another much better referee at that tournament, like Foster (iinm she’s in men’s list too).
DeleteIMO, it's just the logical step in Frappart's development to get the chance for more than one GS game in CL this season.
DeleteI would simply treat her like other first group referees, who already had their CL debut.
Of course there are other options for Bern-Leipzig, but overall not too unlikely, that she gets one of the 32 CL games on MD1/2, I think.
And if we look at a possible EURO selection, it could make sense, that Rosetti observes her.
Other female referees (besides Monzul) need to make their first steps in other male's competitions before being considered for CL.
then simply don’t appoint her, because if we fair enough, you can’t appoint Kulbakov and as someone said refcom just wait for Collum retire, and then we have Sidiropoulos and so on, why you must appoint her? I can’t find any logical reason, based on merit is it fair enough to exclude Collum so far? Is he perform badly than Frappart? Politics again, but even if we talk about politics I can’t understand why another big FA not hurry to push Foster or Welch or Caputi, they are good enough than Frappart at the moment (we don’t talk the past). Is FRA FA more powerful than ENG FA and ITA FA :)
DeleteSchlager has had major problems in the Bundesliga in recent years. acceptance problems... uncertainties... i don't think he will deliver in demanding international games
ReplyDeleteBrych also had this problems in the Bundesliga. The German football bubble (media, clubs, fans) has expectations to referees, which are not compatible with the requirements on international stage. The Germans like nice guys like Aytekin, Gräfe or Jablonski. Schlager has, similar to Brych, a more consequent style, this is not so popular in the Bundesliga but necessary by handling international games and I think he has a good chance to become very successful. But also Jablonski is very talented (technically more than Schlager in my opinion), he must only learn from the mistakes of many German referees in the last years and he must understand that he can not adapt his style in the Bundesliga on the international stage.
Deletehttps://streamable.com/c7m632
ReplyDeleteHere the possible RC in San Marino - Slovenia.
Quite worrying that even YC came only after a certain delay... in my opinion clear RC due to point of impact, VAR should have intervened.
Maybe better to use Ukrainian VAR, but again they only againts San Marino, who care?! But what do you think about Balakin performance so far? I didn’t see he’s good enough to be solid cat. 1, indeed he’s only 34 or 35. Overall I think many of us underestimate San Marino, did you forget Aghayev missed penalty in San Marino, very embarrassing for him. And I didn’t see Aghayev name so far, anyone know what happened with him?
DeleteVideo clips from ALBPOL:
ReplyDeletehttps://we.tl/t-9cDt2r6kyt
As said, ZERO tolerance against unsporting behaviour - all dissents, DtR immediately cautioned. I love this new approach! Hopefully, after three-four matchdays players will adapt and we won't see all those disrespectful behaviours and kicking the ball away.
Besides the POL's goal disallowed for offside (after VAR intervention), the only key match incident was a possible 2nd YC to 10POL. Indeed, if whistled, it should've been a mandatory YC for SPA. However, one may argue if there was a foul at all... Still a 7,9 in observer's report though?
Just an interesting remark about Sánchez Martínez: he officiated CL Play Off PSV - Rangers before the Summer Course, so it is easy to guess that committee asked all referees to apply this style. A radical change for him, but, as you said, this must last in the months and for the full season, otherwise it will be always the same...
DeleteDisciplinary résumé:
Delete8' - YC for SPA holding, correct, perhaps before this new era of European refereeing it would've resulted in only-warning though
13' - warning for off-the-ball holding
16' - missed YC for SPA impeding
20' - possible YC for late challenge
41' - possible/missed YC for SPA holding
45+1' - YC for reckless challenge, mandatory
45+7' - YC for dissent, mandatory in the new era
45+8' - YC for reckless challenge, mandatory, YC for demanding a YC for an opponent
59' - YC for time wasting by the goalkeeper, very good in the new era
60' - YC for reckless challenge, mandatory
62' - YC for goal celebration (shirt), YC to a substitute player for entering the pitch to celebrate
67' - missed 2YC for SPA (if whistled, not sure if there was a foul at all)
75' - YC for provocative behaviour, new era
78' - YC for reckless challenge, mandatory
86' - YC for reckless challenge, correct/mandatory
88' - YC for dissent, mandatory
So, even if there are thirteen yellow cards (five of them as the result of new instructions), one may question JMSM's reading of tactical offences - he started to punish it strictly in 8' but didn't follow this line in 16', 41' and 67' in even more blatant SPA scenarios...
My opinions:
Delete8' wouldn't have been YC with the known trend
45'+7 excellent decision, we should have expected this one even in old times, due to the very blatant gesture against AR, but it could have gone unpunished...
45'+8 absolutely refreshing to watch such yellow cards issued, this seems to be definitely a new era of refereeing
59' clear time wasting by keeper and appropriate punishment
67' If whistled, 100% card because evident SPA. No doubts, impossible to whistle without booking. About the foul, well, playing on wouldn't have been a scandal, I think. But the Spanish can't escape from a crucial mistake, too evident that it was a very promising attack, close to penalty area and with only one or two defenders.
75' maybe more quickness in preventing in this case was possible by referee, the confrontation between players lasted for a while, the Spanish didn't run immediately, but of course very good with the card
88' this was expected also before, very evident dissent
Well, if all games will be handled in this way, we will see a different football in group stage, and I will be ready to study the reaction by Italian teams and the press, these behaviors are mostly allowed in serie A, as you know, I think that now Rocchi will be forced to new guidelines.
And still, going back to Massa CL Play Off with that evident missed YC in second half, I can confirm that Rosetti couldn't be satisfied... the problem with Italian referees is that in serie A they don't use such approach because in case they do, they can't officiate some teams again... it will be very entertaining for me to watch the outcome if this trend by UEFA, hopefully, will be confirmed...
A little update about the Summer Course
