    Debut in Europa League with a committee member for Lindhout.
    A game to be watched the one in Greece. And I would say also a quite good one for the expectations of the Dutch...

      Chefren, you shouldn’t draw any conclusions based on just that kids tournament without a VAR. Lindhout has improved a lot the past two years, as a part of the UEFA Talent & Mentor programma (coached by an Italian btw!). His body language is very confident. In European games, he was able to adapt his lenient Eredivisie style to a more strict one. His fitness is excellent. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t show his best at the u21, where they gave him only 1 day rest in between probably the two biggest Groupstage games. Very strange management in Romania tbh.

      Games in Greece can be hot and tensed, but Lindhout is used to a hostile atmosphere (in Rotterdam..).

      AR Inia seems very talented as well. Interesting that so many good AR’s are Frisian

      Why even bother sending a committee member if Lindhout is going to get good marks regardless if he referees the game well or not... 🤷‍♂️

      And btw: the (anonymous) comments btw under Chefren's post about Lindhout's performance in the Johan Cryuff Shield game were a disgrace. He CORRECTLY analysed that Lindhout refereed the game poorly - only giving foul calls after 2/3secs, unsure of what to decide; inexistent (no, not "lenient", lenient can be good(!), inexistent) disciplinary control; lots of confrontations and no control over the players actions whatsoever; and finally, a hilariously bad stealing meters incident at the end that even a grassroots referee could be disappointed in himself for. There is a difference between good, lenient refereeing and a referee showing an unconfident and poor level of officiating: this was the latter. If you can't distinguish between the two, and instead formulate your analysis as "well there were no complaints in the media, Dutch style" blah blah blah, then... it is rather tiresome (anyone can read the latter on some fan's forum or whatever), from my perspective at least.

      And to be clear, I think Lindhout is a fairly decent 1st/2nd Cat referee.

      What? I like Dutch refs. For a country with population ≈15mil, they provided MANY top referees (including having two of the world's very best referees only a very short while ago) and probably could have refereed four WC finals over the years. You can't actually think I have some vendetta against Dutch (or any country's!) referees?

      Some Dutch fans (or should I say: a Dutch fan) seem to be extremely annoyed by each post which even slightly criticizes Allard Lindhout.
      This is not a fan site, grow up! Nothing wrong in what Chefren and Mikael have written. Lindhout deservedly criticized after ECu21 and let’s be honest, if it would have been a referee not under the wings of Dutch committee member this appointment would definitely have been different.
      Having said that, let’s see how he’ll do in Piraeus and evaluate afterwards.

      Indeed Lindhout seems to be fancied by Dutch readers/commenters on this blog. But also by Dutch refcom. I am also Dutch - and have my reasons to be anonymous here - but agree with Chefren and Mikael's opinions and analysis (also in previous blogs). There is a difference between actually being in control of a match and players, and pretending to be in control. The latter is what Lindhout is very good at. But when you look at his decisions on the field, he does not take any risk in his decisions. Most fouls he whistles are in favor of the defenders and mainly soft ones.
      However this match will be a big test for him and hope he does well to gain some confidence after the U21 Euros, to prove he is a decent 1st category referee. I don't see he will reach the level of 'our' current 2 Elite referees and Kuipers, but time will tell.

      Damková essentially runs women's refereeing right? So in practice it's Rosetti/Kuipers/Sajn/Velasco.

      Few changes in the last 4 years, Batta retired and Dallas became 'regular' observer (don't know if it was Rosetti's decision or the Scotsman's), Kuipers was (deservedly) appointed shortly after his retirement.

      Re: Velasco Carballo, the official version is that he left CTA-RFEF because he was appointed to UEFA committee, but always had the gut feeling that he was fired by recently-departed RFEF president Luis Rubiales out of spite because Velasco Carballo argued that Mbappé's decisive goal against Spain in 2021 Nations League final was correctly allowed to stand (now it isn't because IFAB changed their interpretation due to the incident, but *at that time* the goal was legal), and his appointment to RefCom was rather a personal favour by a friend (Rosetti) than a promotion out of the blue, despite Velasco ofc having the skills to be a competent RefCom member.

    I want to ask about Jerome Brisard. What are the UEFA plans for him? France is doing very well in refereeing. Turpin is in his best years, Letexier is the new rising star and Delajod already starts to make a name for himself as a huge talent. It is not like France desparately need another top trusted referee, situation in which are other big and powerful countries for example. Brisard already is a top VAR, what is the point of him being back on the pitch? I understand to appoint him in qualifiers in order to keep him, you know, connected, but now in the group stage... and in UEL and not UECL... a little weire strategy, isn't it?

    About Italian appointments, Di Bello gets this one in one of his worst periods of form, still out after the famous incident in Juventus - Bologna. Standard assignment for him as Category 1 with an expected win by away side.
    Mariani: after the path he followed one year ago, the expectations were all about Champions League. Getting still Europa League means that he has not convinced committee so far, and we know the reasons, after the poor performance in the big game involving Barcelona. Still, he gets something very big in this competition, but this time he can't fail. His first game in serie A this season has been poor, Milan - Torino, I described it on the blog. No further appointments after that. Situation seems not good.
    I think on MD2 surely Orsato, but maybe also Guida in CL.

    Specific information on Erik Lambrechts (BEL). He was designated for a UCL match but has been replaced due to injury.
    As for Lawrence Visser, he had already been designated for a UEL match (Ranger FC - Real Betis), so this is not a replacement.
    In conclusion, for UEFA, Erik is the new N°1.
    Let's hope Visser puts in a good performance in the UEL to get his chance again in the UCL.

      it seems that most of the referees under spot will be on UECL, under the eyes of Velasco, Webb and Dallas; maybe some 2nd category to be promoted in January.

    Here the penalty by Di Bello: in my opinion dangerous action by defender who can commit penalty by that tackle, but I see rather attacker going into the opponent's than the contrary, and maybe even an anticipated contact. VAR can't change the decision...

    Lindhout whistled a correct penalty for reckless challenge, but he missed the mandatory YC, this should mean he didn't see what had happened exactly, indeed he was far from the scene and covered by other players, but still a correct decision.

      yes was good. however, it seemed to me that the 3-3 was offsides? i havent checked a replay yet, but if the player who is jumping up in the air in front of the goalkeeper is in offside position. he is in the line of vision and makes obvious action...

      See it the same as Xabi; first YC should (at least) be supported. Ajax player has no chance of winning the ball fairly and kicks through his opponent, who furthermore had a SPA(-like) position.

      First of all Mariani did a good job overall. Kept a potential hot match under controll. With respect to the first YC this was simply wrong.

      In contact of the game there where more moments where Mariani gestured to players of both teams not to be to dramatical and play on. I can imagine he gave him on the pitch from his position but the FO should have coached him here. Ajax player played the ball and slighty touched the opponent who made a lot of drama of the scene.

      One other thing for improvement. In the extra time of the 2nd half there was a claim by one of the Marseille players. Mariani stood by his decision and resulting in a big protest by the player with his hands. Earlier in the match a similar situation led to a YC for a AJAX player who kicked some air after disagreeing with a decission. Although I understand that the latter was in minute 90+ 3 or 4. For his line it was better to give a YC in that situation as well.

    Sometimes there isn't definitely any explanation for some mistakes.
    Here Belgian VARs to be blamed for an incredible decision to confirm a YC by Visser... if this is not red card for SFP, then we can allow everything. Sometimes we discuss possible red cards for low contacts, but this one?

    Also Visser reaction on the pitch with the slow YC is something you can'e expect from a referee of a certain level, he should have immediately noticed what had happened, going with a red card in the hands, these are the details that in my opinion should be noticed in the top referees.

      Hmm, I think there is certain instruction to lower the card colour in case of such incidents when a player looks at the ball and tries to play it but at the end hits his opponent (see the RC issued by Çakır to Nani vs Real Madrid). Of course, many of us disagree but that's how it is. I think it's '8' for UEFA - no intervention in case of either card.

      On a side note, what a pity that Visser, who was very good at properly detecting and punishing SFPs a few years ago, is the one to make such calls in recent times...

      @Upstylon. Surprised that I hear that about Visser cause last night he tried to avoid pulling out cards at any meassure.

      It was like watching Vincic or Sanchez in Eindhoven.

      He tried to stay behind the scenes,only whistling fouls and when it was mandatory and fully mandatory,then YC was shown.

    Yesterday night I saw Ajax - OM. Mariani was simply excellent: perfect in foul detection, good disciplinary management, good in player management and physically on track. If this was a test prior to elite category, IMO he fully passed it. I would suggest an 8,5+ performance from what I saw yesterday. Even Bidnoni and Tegoni were fine on their evaluations, in particular AR2. I was very pleased.

      Out of all these,Rojas' name stand out cause it's his 1st time that he is in charge of a match that has 2 of spanish big 3.

    Coming back to Quivala's comment of some days ago, I agree on the fact that such cup matches are important to complete the list of 18 at Euro24. In my opinion right now only 14 referees are sure to attend: Soares Dias, Gil Manzano, Letexier, Turpin, Oliver, Taylor, Nyberg, Makkelie, Marciniak, Zwayer, Siebert, Orsato, Kovacs, Vincic.
    Sanchez Martinez, Massa and Jovanovic are probably the names to be tested but we should consider that in 2024 we will also have Olympics Game so they could be sent for Paris, leaving some spots for female referees or Tello and Sampaio. I really hope to see different names between Euro24 and Olympics games.
    Almost sure that the following names will be ruled out: Hernandez, Bastien, Collum, Stieler, Grenfeeld, Sidiropolus, Koulbakov, Karasev, Sharer and Hategan. Eksas could be a safe as fourth official and probably Hernandez and Hategan as VAR

    On Monday, the Pro League will discuss the strategic plan presented to them by the Refereeing Department.

    There, among other things, the new salaries that the referees should receive are proposed. (all amounts are in gross).
    * Referee: €2000 -> €2200
    * Assistant referee: €850 -> €1000
    * Fourth referee: €350 -> €450
    * VAR: €450 -> €1000
    * A-VAR: €200 -> €450

    Furthermore, additional VAR training is also being organised, and an update must be made for the offside line technology and the number of semi-professional referees should be expanded from 12 (actually 11 because Alexandre Boucaut has stopped as a referee) to 16 names.

    In total, the Referee Department asks the Pro League for an additional 1 million euros per year
    The plan will be submitted to the Pro League football teams on Monday, September 25. This is done by the CEO of the Football Association Manu Leroy and the chairman of the Professional Refereeing Board Herbert Fandel.

    If this plan is not approved, the Belgian referees will threaten to go on strike.
