  1. Excellent Makkelie in the first half of Dutch Cup final

    1. Forget Real-PSG. This is the match that challenge Makkelie the most. Many interesting momentsleutel. I will try to post some clips after the match. If you have time watch the second half

    2. Very tough game for a referee IMO… Many players with bad behaviors, theatrics, exaggerating falls and lots of pressure from the benches.

    3. Indeed, but Makkelie is doing great I think. Only thing is that he could have given more cards.

    4. Imo if he give earlier cards in this match he makes it a lot easier for himself. But in the Dutch league ut is a prestige issue for him to not give much yc.

    5. I think it’s a tactical choice

    6. Makkelie was outstanding. He is praised on TV for his performance and contribution to a fast play and spectacular match. Perhaps he mist some free kicks but with players exaggerating all the time it’s logical. Very clever tactical approach and the cards given only when really necessary.

  5. I really can't stand that! Disgusting! Referee intentionally missed CLEAR SECOND YC, very, very clear, against Real and then gave YC to the Sevilla player that was fouled (for dissent), and that player couldn't continue the match. He was severely injured. What a shame from the referee. The foul was so obvious, defender was never close to the ball, but the ref knew that it would be second YC and didn't even whistle a foul.

    1. Clear foul and second yellow. But what about Sevillas free kick? Wasn’t their player clearly closer than 1 meter from the wall?

      Delete
    2. At the end this clear and obvious mistake occur as a crucial one. At 0-2 and with one player less on the pitch, chances for Real to win the game were very weak. Ref decided not to give second YC and helped Real. More importantly, this result decided the Primera champion. But of course, this ref will never be punished for that.

      Delete
    3. As I said. 1-0 for Sevilla was 10000% an infraction. The player was standing a fre centimeters from the wall. Must be an indirect free kick. So stop with nonsense about the referee helping the other team.

    4. He made mistakes for both teams.

    1. @Chefren. Maybe a apart topic to analyze this?

    2. For me it is OK to comment here.
I find excellent decision to play on with such clear gesture after the penalty appeal. Indeed, it is the classic situation in which most of referees whistle penalty, and it can't be denied, but in reality it is a contact that attacker uses for getting the call. True that defender leaves the leg, and he takes a risk for that, but then, as you can see from one replay, attacker falls down without any significant touch, but rather, using opponent's body as obstacle. So, this was the best decision for me. When things are not objective like step on foot, these decisions must be praised. I always hated such kind of penalties if whistled.
About the possible yellow cards, for me the second situation is never a clear one (36'), because the player has already raised his leg and he is close to hit ball, while the opponent is late trying the same action, can't see a specific fault by the player deemed to have committed foul. So, careless at maximum for me, even though there is an injury.
The first incident, 9', could have been YC: not sure about the intensity though, but it doesn't sounds as clear mistake.
Finally, the offsides, in both situations it is very difficult to blame assistant referees, mistakes when flags are not raised can be more expected, than raising a wrong offside.
If the rest was a good disciplinary control with all cards issued, I think very good performance with a praise for having played on in the penalty incident.

    3. It’s a pity only these clips are included, and situations regarding excellent management skills (highly educative) and issued sanctions are left out. Rather selective inclusion criteria used by our Dutch friend here, which hardly tell the story of the whole match.
IMO an outstanding performance by Makkelie, who was praised all over in the media (with the exception of Ajax’ newspaper De Telegraaf). Thanks to the referee we finally were able to witness a fantastic spectacle, something which hadn’t happened for many years.

      Delete
    4. Thank you Chefren for your response. I expected a penalty but after seeing the replays i understand why it was not given.

And for the anonymous user. Yesterday it took me a lot of time to cut out all the relevant and in my view suitable clips for discussion from the summary. Very disappointing to get not a substantive response but a vague accusation.

      Delete
    5. Indeed, great final. What a fight. Very intense game with many fouls. Players really did anything to win. Some dirty behaviours, but Makkelie managed it very well. Very strong personality. Not influenced by the players, the crowd, the benches. Very very tough game for a referee. Imagine what would happen if one of the other referees was in charge of this final?

The no-penalty decision was a perfect call for me. The #10 is looking for the leg of defender to trip himself. Another interesting situation was a YC to #8 Ajax (SPA / borderline DOGSO). YC was the best decision with one other Ajax player very near to the situation.

I must say, the most referees in current Elite group are on their best when games are fluent, with players focused on playing football. I think committee has a few Go-To choices when games are potentially problematic, players are “dirty”, or the atmosphere is very tensed. Looking at the appointments, Makkelie is definitely one of them. Probably Marciniak and his management skills as well, and of course Orsato - big authority and always respected. Not many other options…

  7. Now in Paris very clear kick right in the knee of Marseille player, it was very painful. Referee was laughing, like he was saying: Get up, it's nothing. But it was something, at least YC. Ref totally missed it and it is incredible because everyone could hear that kick in the knee. Before that Neymar got YC for almost nothing and he drove crazy after that. What's the problem with these refs?! Letexier is losing control, many protests due to some bad decisions.

    1. Not the same criterium, that foul and the one where Marquinhos is late on Payet should definetely be bookable offences.

But we all know that France refs are too much lenient...

  8. Scottish cup semi finals this weekend. Fairly poor performances in both to be honest. Beaton missed 1, maybe 2 reds in the 1st match. Madden had really poor foul/ yellow card detection today. Hopefully VAR will be coming in after the world cup, will hopefully make a difference to Scottish referees

  9. Wooow was that a handball from Vinicius prior scoring a goal. After long OFR ref decided it was. It is not clear even it was handball, and if it was, it was very high close to shoulder. Is it punishable then??? Later potential penalty for Sevilla. Many many debatable situations and decisions.

  11. I forgot to ask earlier. How did the Italian media comment on the 2 red cards from Juventus-Bologna? I'm especially curious about the one for Medel. I saw a very angry attitude by Luca Sacchi. He was also pushed by a player after showing the red card for dissent. I would, however, notice a lack of confidence during and after OFR, at least this was my feeling.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, a big discussion after this incident. VAR call should be correct, foul outside the box and RC for DOGSO. But.. the worst possible management by Sacchi on the pitch. He didn't show clearly that it was free kick and not penalty, so the player from Bologna thought, I think, that he had issued RC and penalty. In addition, it is not the first time that he shows very aggressive attitude against players. While for some aspects, matter of personality, one can like that, for sure we should also say that this is not good and too much. He should have avoided this head to head with players, but first of all, he had to make clear gestures about the decision he took. It looks like he is a referee that suffers from VAR intervention, there were other incidents in past in which he looked to be not happy during and after OFR, rather bored, but this one is the most blatant show by him...

  12. A recap about some Spanish games of recent days with my opinions.

    Sevilla - Real Madrid
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SG9lV0Z-vA
00:45 possible second YC, for me very clear, 100%, if not for SPA, you can have reckless as argument, Cuadra didn't whistle at all, this explains why no card, in case of whistle he would have surely booked, I think he misread situation, assessing a fair action on the ball (only explanation).
01:20 disallowed goal, for me never a clear situation, it looks rather upper shoulder / chest, I would never encourage a VAR in forcing the intervention when things are not 100% clear, this in Italy wouldn't have been called.

    Atlético Madrid - Espanyol
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--Jhk2hqWlg
01:55 second YC for handball on a shot on goal, but I think wrong decision, because it happened after a deflection by teammate, so not punishable if you ask me, the ball wasn't a shot on goal anymore (maybe somebody can remember the famous incident of Zwayer in Chelsea game, quite similar as concept, ball touched by arm when it wasn't targeted on goal anymore), I think in this case referee missed the first deflection by teammate, still, LotG not 100% clear in this regard, and not a 100% mistake, but surely a mistake in reality.
03:10 Penalty for handball after OFR, do we have any evidence there? for me, rather wrong intervention, and I don't understand why VAR called referee, to me it looks like, without further proofs, a touch by leg. Can you deny that? In case of further video footage, VAR would have shown it, I think! This is not enough...

    Valencia - Osasuna
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNkmdSto2Xo
00:50 absolutely correct penalty, good decision.
01:28 penalty after OFR, but I don't understand the criteria for an intervention there? only because missed incident? for me the isolated incident is never something worthy of a VAR call.

    Levante - Villarreal
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVeTpZkmI5o
00:51 Possible RC for SFP, VAR doesn't intervene, in my opinion this was a clear RC, I can find as argument for supporting referee, but very weak, the fact that VAR can think of an unlucky circumstance, with the fouled player putting the foot under the opponent and then not having time to react to avoid that, but for me basically, a RC should have been issued and this is a significant mistake.

Last remark, mostly based on the first video, interesting that the official channel of La Liga on Youtube talks about "referees mistakes" in a so open way during the highlights of the games, showing also particular incidents, if not important for the final score, this doesn't happen in Italian official channels for Serie A, both from Lega Serie A and the broadcasters (SKY and DAZN), they don't talk deliberately about referee's mistake, in very extra-ordinary cases they only air the situations without a particular comment, differently from what I can hear in Sevilla - Real Madrid, but in most of cases it is avoided.

    1. Regarding the penalty for atletico, I was really wondered at first like you chefren. So I rewatched the full live sequence where also other images were shown. Though It is not 100% clear in other angles you can see that the ball probably first goes to his arm ant then on the leg. The arm is away of his body, so in this case I would say VAR intervention correct, but from this angles shown in the video not recognizable.

    2. Thanks for this clarification, so correct intervention by VAR if they had clearer images.

  15. OT - Two reckless vs. SFP incidents from this weekend's Bundesliga Matchday:

    1) use of ellbow sanctioned with a YC [no intervention] in Arminia Bielefeld - Bayern München, handled by Matthias Jöllenbeck [VAR: Markus Schmidt]:

    2) sliding tackle punished with a RC [no intervention] in SC Freiburg - VfL Bochum, officiated by Sascha Stegemann [VAR: Thorben Siewer]:

Especially 1) is very controversial in Germany, your opinions are appreciated.

    1. In my opinion the first situation is very borderline, but still YC if you ask me, you should read a deliberate action by player to assess the incident as RC for violent conduct, otherwise, you have just to punish the position of the elbow, used rather as tool (he makes the movement with elbow in that position before contact with opponent and he doesn't give the idea to do that for hitting him, at least for me). Still, very unlucky but for me supporting YC is OK.

Second case is a vaery harsh decision, but must be supported, all referees would have issued YC there, some arguments for RC, but rather YC expected.

      Delete
    2. 1/ I have always learned, if the hand is 'open' it is reckless (YC), if the hand is clenched into a fist it is serious foul play (RC). So here, YC is ok.
2/ This is a clear frustration tackle at 3-0 defeat score which requires RC

      Delete
    3. For 1) it's more about SFP (endangering the safety) than VC, I think. Public opinion strongly tends towards RC, including the coaches of both(!) teams.
However I agree that YC is not a clear mistake.

      Delete
  16. To expand a bit on Chefren's post about LaLiga, the highlights of Valencia - Osasuna are missing many interesting situations of the match:

    - First YC to #24 OSA: https://streamable.com/x1hjr5
    - Possible missed foul + 2YC by #24 OSA for reckless use of arms + penalty appeal by Valencia on #21 VAL by #24 OSA: https://streamable.com/kgi84l
    - Possible RC for #24 OSA for SFP: https://streamable.com/04ll4r
    - Missed YC for scoring a goal with the arm: https://streamable.com/3jvwcc
    - Wrong foul that leads to an OGSO: https://streamable.com/f518n9

That is in addition to the incidents mentioned by Chefren above. I'd like to comment too on the attitude when slowly walking towards the RRA, but unfortunately I've been unable to find the full sequence.

    My opinion is:
    - Correct YC.
    - Missed foul + 2nd YC + missed PK (although I can agree with no OFR).
    - Missed RC + OFR for SFP.
    - Right PK for handball (Chefren's post)
    - Missed handball, OFR was not necessary (factual decision), and missed YC.
    - Wrong foul which denies a OGSO (no defender could intervene in time). Also, it starts to be too common that referees don't wait before whistling in these situations. Gil Manzano did that too last year against Levante. If we ask ARs to hold their flags, referees should do better, given that their whistle stops the game while the flag does not.
    - Wrong OFR. There are arguments for a penalty (the defender's knee hits the opponent leg), but IMO it is not enough for an OFR if not given.

    1. WOW :)
23': correct YC for a reckless challenge
32': Clear second YC, difficult for referee, off the ball incident, I think he had an eye on that, but without the needed accuracy, while trying to follow the ball at the same time, clearly a recklss action against opponent, missed second YC, VAR can't intervene, about the possible penalty a few later, I disagree with you in this case, not a clear penalty, absolutely correct by VAR to stay silent and I agree with referee's decision on the pitch. However, penalty wouldn't have been questioned by VAR, if whistled.
45': RC expected decision, hitting point to be considered and we have an excessive force as well, not even YC by referee is another very clear mistake, VAR should have intervened.
55' : honestly, no card after this deliberate attempt to score by arm is shocking... see the movement made by player with arm! I think referee assessed it as accidental, so according to the recent rule, no card for him, but this is a significant mistake if you ask me.
69' Fully agree with your remark, referees never wait when they have to manage such situations of potential fouls before goals scored, while assistant referees have been strongly instructed, it seems there isn't any interest that all referees delay the whistle before a possible goal, while deciding for a foul, since VAR introduction I can't remember any single case of that, and in this way, VAR can't work. I think this was the classic easy foul in favor of keeper, keepers can do everything they want, even making foul on attackers in such situations, but they will get always a whistle in favor... that's something I hardly accept to be honest.

      Delete
    2. Have referees been instructed to hold whistle for fouls in box in case of goals being scored in moments?
If so I disagree. If referees see clear fouls whistle they should. No need for VAR to confirm or not.
Secondly. Holding a whistle on clear and obvious fouls would create in time a muscle memory in the mind of referee to delay whistles...could cause unnecessary incidents.

      Delete
    3. And apart from those details, a clear change of foul criteria towards the end of the game, under the pressure of Valencia players and fans after several dubious decisions. Suddenly every contact was a foul, and in the 1H the referee was just waving "get up". Watching the game live from the stands, I was surprised in the end how bad was refereeing at the game.

  17. Not big fan of Di Bello and his style, but for sure he needs to improve in terms of judging what is bookable offence and what is not.

In Napoli-Roma match right before the end of 1st half, 2 SPA's happened, and he did nothing, not even word with players.

Too much talking imo, and this may work in some matches, but I dont know how this will work in 2nd half of this match.

He is in a poor moment of form after an excellent season, least appearances were really controversial. Missed a clear penalty in Atalanta - Napoli two weeks ago and now, if you ask me, totally out from this game Napoli - Roma from the early minutes. Another VAR intervention for a missed penalty, wrong disciplinary control, missed some fouls and no control at all.

Too much mistakes, this reminds of his controversial match that he had, Napoli-Lazio.

If Orsato is out for a semi-final, eventually we can also see Turpin/Marciniak with Real Madrid again. The 2nd leg needs a very experienced name.

    1. We can debate the red card, but @anty75 says a yellow card would be "harsh?!?!" Wow.

It is at minimum reckless. He's come a great distance to play the ball above head level with his foot/leg when no one else was challenging with their feet.

If we want to protect against head injuries, I sort of like this red card. But I would also admit that the type/mode of contact is usually excused with only a yellow, so we need clear guidance on how UEFA/FIFA/IFAB want these (unnecessary head-level challenges with legs that do NOT connect with studs) handled.

    2. I fully agree with usaref.

YC is more expected there, but RC can't be a clear error as one can't deny that it endangers the safety of the opponent.

    1. Also not clear, whether the foul happened before or after the corner execution. I think, the holding started before, but maybe it continued during the execution.

    2. If that is not a 100 % red card on the GK for his high foot body tackle... then Cakir's red card on Nani was a travesty of justice and Mr Cakir should have been suspended. ( which it was BTW)

    3. Compliments to this referee for having the balls to give a penalty! Defenders are not supposed to work with their arms and pull at attackers, I don't understand why people here see this as a wrong decision, I don't think there is anywhere in the rulebook that you can defend in this way, and maybe the referee had the defense Already warned not to make any fouls?

    2. Incorrect procedure by the ref. He was about to give a yellow card for the unsporting behaviour when he yelled at the injured player. Then he hit the other player in the face. The ref must first show a yellow for the first offence and then a red card for violent conduct.

      The ref ignored the yellow.

    1. Well just to state that the Press Confreence wasn’t out of the ordinary, Every Year the Copa Del Rey Final referee has his Press Conference. It’s also happens for the Super Cup held In Saudi Arabia. The main talking point was about their Federation President coming under Fire for Some “Corrupt” Allegations and the President also stated that information was stolen from his phone, in which he had a press conference about it yesterday while for today HDz HDz and VAR De Burgos spoke about how the President had all referees full support in this issue and HDz HDz swore with his life that the President of the Royal Spanish Football federation has never told him how to whistle a match!

  38. Arsenal vs Man Utd.
    Craig Pawson, VAR Jarred Gillett.

29’ Goal scored by Arsenal but the player was offside. VAR correctly intervenes and rules the goal out. However, this came about after a foul, and so VAR recommended an OFR for a penalty.
For me this is the correct decision, albeit a little confusing for the average spectator. What is everyone else’s thoughts?

    1. Correctly disallowed goal for an offside and a complete disaster for the intervention about the foul. Never ever a clear error not to whistle a penalty for such a slight contact. Having said that, also a completely spineless OFR by Pawson who agreed with VAR and didn't stand with his original decision. A classical example of a total mess by all involved referees - VAR and the one on the pitch. The simple answer is that the level of refereeing is just a disgrace.

  39. Pawson is one poor poor poor referee!!! How did he rise to this level!!! His attitude and body language in games looks like he is being forced to officiate!!! So so lackadaisical a referee!!! And he has the FA cup final, no wonder UEFA never rated him. He needs a good coach to make him a little bit pro active, if not the cup final will be a disaster but no worries he is in England where there seems to be no consequences!!!

  40. Wonder what your thoughts are on not giving penalty to Man United in 1st half when player from Arsenal (Cedric) fall to the ground but plays the ball with his hand, no penalty was given...

    ReplyDelete

    1. He knew what he was doing there!! It was a deliberate movement of his hand.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I agree. Had he just stopped the ball in that position, it could be seen as natural hand position (maybe debatable though), but I also think, there was a movement towards the ball, which makes it a deliberate handball.

    3. Video:
      https://streamable.com/js2f79
Punishable handball, he sees the ball and before the touch he has all the time to avoid it. He makes a clear movement with arm that can be read as deliberate (once the ball has been touched). Wrong by VAR to support.

      Delete
    4. I strongly argue the consensus on a deliberate handball. The defender is stumbling and more or like ‘walking on hands and feet’ which can be interpreted as supporting the body (without he would fall to the ground). Before the arm touching the ball we see the defender making exactly the same movements two to three times with the left and right arm without a ball around. So I can fully support the no intervention here, and actually no penalty is the best decision IMO.

  41. Excellent first half by Sozza in Inter - Roma, perfect free kick decision, foul outside the box, not easy, full control of a potentially hot game. 100% a talent, and it is a pity that he has still to wait 8 months to join the FIFA list. We are wasting time!

    1. IMO
      1) Correct penalty, defender is simply in the worse position and too late.
      2) Quite a serious mistake in my book, the player misses the ball and therefore unfairly stops the attacker from progressing. Missed VAR intervention by Fritz for me, clear/obvious mistake.

      Delete
    2. IMO both are correct decisions by Siebert.

      Delete
    3. @xabi: May I ask why 2) is not a penalty for you? Would be interesting to know some arguments, as in Germany the consensus is that Siebert and Fritz made a serious mistake here in not awarding a spot-kick.

      Delete
    4. The penalty appeal is indeed a penalty to be whistled, no ball and tackle only impeding attacker, I think the reasoning of Fritz was that it wasn't a direct contact on opponent, so a bit gret area, but once you make such action and you don't get ball before, you should be punished. I'm not 100% sure it was mandatory for VAR to intervene, so I understand a bit Fritz's point of view, but definitely a penalty missed by Siebert and important mistake, surely he had different perception than what really happened.

    5. @Flip: In the first image I get the feeling that the defender touches the ball. In the second image it is not perceived well. I really need to see it better.

  46. Extra time in Seville. Unfortunately Hernández Hernández had a crucial mistake by missing a mandatory 2YC for VAL6 in 78', otherwise one could be talking about one of the best performances of the season by a Spanish referee.
