ReplyDeleteVincic as 4th offical is particular. I think we won't see him in a semi-final CL. He will be the final referee of the Europa league. The fact that Dallas will be in Villareal next week as observer subscribes that argument. I think we will see a very suprising name in Villareal. Category Jovanovic / Gozubuyuk or even Siebert.
I predict Turpin in Madrid next week.
After the appointment yesterday (Kovacs after a good QF) I wouldnt be surprised to read Gozubuyuks name next week in VIL-LIV

Yes, Jovanovic or Gozubuyuk may have been chosen for LIV-VIL, but I think the first leg would be more appropriate. In addition, Cakir may have been considered for this match, perhaps in order to prepare for the World Cup after his absence of 1.5 months.

ReplyDeleteI'm in trouble to think that Orsato could be appointed for a second leg, he is still out from serie A, not officiating a game in the last month. The forced option would be to see him in serie A for a game on next week end after more than 1 month of stop and then 2 days later CL semifinal. Not possible if you ask me... for sure Vincic, despite of this assignment as fourth official, should get a game in second leg, I don't find other options to be honest...

ReplyDeleteDon't really get the love Zwayer gets in this blog all the time. He currently is Germany's number 4 or 5 at best, after (apart from Brych) Siebert, Aytekin, Stieler and, given the recent high profile appointments, Stegemann. I know UEFA sometimes evaluates this a bit differently but seriously nobody in his right mind would give Zwayer a match beyond group stage.

DeleteZwayer is current the number 2 of Germany, and he is more advanced then stieler and aytekin. He performs/performed very well on this season (in germany and uefa), passing thought the hate and death threats.

Love, hate, everything depends on what you want to read with your eyes :) You are missing the neutral view, that is is a very important skill for a referee. I think that on this blog, Zwayer, like almost all the other referees, has received in the years both positive and negative comments, as it can happen.

The fact that Vincic has the role of the 4th official in Liverpool on Wednesday excludes him from being appointed in the second leg in Villareal - that's my point of view. Yes indeed, a game on Friday is a good indicator for a (midweek) CL international assignment. On the other hand, a Friday game is also a well-known strategy to keep a ref in the shadow for a high-profile assignment the week after. The 8 May games (AZ-AJA / FEY-PSV) are very important for the standings.
DeleteBesides that, Makkelie whistles every week. Based on the 21-day rule, you can already exclude him on 6 games. The game on Friday involves two teams he didn’t whistle for like >8 weeks and its actually a very tight game and very important for European play-offs. However this argument doesn’t exclude him for CL, of course. But I’d say, logical appointment.
Appoint Makkelie in Villarreal Liverpool would be a risky, nonsense, bad management choice. They keep him away from stages in QF, and in SF 1st leg too. Why would they risk some trouble in a game where they can appoint Orsato (if recovered), Vincic, Siebert, Jovanovic?

DeleteIn my book a good first half of Osmers. The first YC seemed a bit harsh to me, the other two cautions were perfect. Also two very good play-ons, one in each penalty area. (43' potential handball of Salzburg, Osmers saw perfectly that it was the shoulder area; 45+2' GK of Benfica got all ball).

We at least can exclude Makkelie for CL SFs since his AR1 has AVAR duty on sunday. Kuipers is observing in Madrid wednesday so that excludes Makkelie completely for the CL SFs as expected

Why would the third one be a foul? Sometimes we need to use common sense.
DeleteIt's an accident. The attacker is running away from goal fully and isn't a threat. The defender simply lands from his jump and happens to make contact with the trail leg of his opponent.
There's no careless action. There's not even a "challenge." What would the foul even be?
Not all contact and/or unfortunate result constitutes a foul. Good for Miguel and the VAR for recognizing this. Calling this a penalty would be a horrendous outcome.

Normally we won’t see a SF referee in the final, however Clattenburg followed the same stages. I think after Siebert performance committee wants safe hands for the SF’s. It would be a big risk for Makkelie, meaning he has to do another good performance not too loose sight on the final. This shows again how limited the elite group is.

IMO although Van Egmond has shown not to be that wise, i dont think he would send Steegstra on VAR duty 2 days before a CL SF given all the different options for AVAR in the eredivisie matches . That would be one of the most stupid things for Van Egmond to do, after making Kooij a new FIFA ref.....

ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I don't expect Makkelie in Villareal based on the observer (committee member). DM is very experienced and its not a big game on paper. Makes no sense to have Dallas in Villareal to observe the Dutch. The experienced Marciniak is also not observed by committee member. I rather expect a referee in Villareal that is handling a Semi final for the very first time.
I would expect Turpin and Vincic. Alternatives might be Kovacs for a second semi-final, Zwayer, Soares or, and I think this could be a serious option: Aytekin. He was praised for his performance is Praha, has shown to be a reliable referee and its a match that would suit him. I think we might see a German in VIL-LIV.

DeleteTurpin in Madrid is not impossible, but he is on Thursday in Leipzig (I guess by plane), on Sunday in Montpellier. On Wednesday in Madrid…? That’s a busy schedule. Also a game on Sunday is in the Knock-Out stages always a clue that a referee is not appointed in CL, as it doesn’t allow committee to make a last minute swap after the 1st legs.
On the other hand, Makkelie has a busy schedule as well. Last Friday in Eredivisie, last Monday in Kuwait, next Friday in Eredivisie again, to Villareal on Tuesday? Almost no time to work at the police ;) But I assume he just likes to whistle a lot. He has officiated so many games in 2021/2022… Wow. Nevertheless, a Friday game is usually a clue that a referee has international duty. VAR van Boekel is with G (hard name!) in England on Thursday and not appointed in Dutch league this weekend. Another clue.
Since Kuipers is the observer on in Madrid, I assume we can expect Orsato there. Or maybe Vincic? He has no game this weekend. Although my gut feeling says, Vincic is saved for the EL final.
We can’t fully exclude the 4th officials for a semi final appointment. In QF’s, there were are few that worked as CR ánd 4th official:

If we will read his name, after having been out from the pitch since the end of March, it will be simply for emergency reasons.

@usaref: Then it is a French ref in the final. Obviously a political choice and IMO undeserved. He has no semi final experience. Sth that almost ALL referees had this century before whistling a CL final. Maybe this is a compensation for the French football association after having no referees at the EURO 2020 KO-stages? For me it’s clear. Kuipers just had the EURO final, and therefore Makkelie is no choice in the grand final and is “burned” by Rosetti in the PSG game. :’)

Martins, Bebek, Conger and finally Gomes for a cup final (not necessarily an exhaustive list), always with local linesmen helping them; unfortunately, unlike Saudi or UAE, the association there are very opaque when it comes to reporting referee appointments
- I watched Jovanović's game [VAR: Bebek], and he did a good job in a basically normal difficulty match, with a consistent approach to disciplinary. In addition, the Serbian ref correctly awarded a penalty in the last minute of the match for a clear handling (textbook positioning):

DeleteI am the first person to note that officiating in the Arab world can be extremely challenging (less eyes on it than, say, CL, but often much more difficult), but to be honest, it was extremely exaggerated to send Makkelie for this game. You can just ask Mads Kristoffersen how tough SOME games there can become, but despite this being an important relegation clash, the football level was very weak and a UEFA Elite referee (not least Makkelie), was hardly required for it.

Almost strange to see Makkelie so relaxed and smiling so much (in the beginning of the video). I always find him so serious when he officiates. He looks like a very nice and friendly guy in here.

DeleteThe president did not said that Hategan is ready to come back, only the press understood that! Hategan wants to return (meaning not to end his career, unknown when) and he is in permanent contact with Vassaras. He is waited to come back as soon as he will be fit.
DeleteKovacs was congratulated by the president for his performance yesterday in the UCL semifinal. Media in Romania is in ecstasy, this great performance was a very important moment for us yesterday. Many praises by everybody.
Of course, 2 referees at WC is very, very unlikely. It is obviously a declaration for the press, good for his image, so people will like him more - he does not enjoy too much appreciation for now.

ReplyDelete44' - You could argue simulation by the attacker, trawling his legs to be clipped after running the ball too far. Not for me though, clear penalty to be given (more Al-Ghamdi's MEXFRA than SUICHI for WC2010 experts :)).
65' - I understand that you have to get DOGSO+(+) in order to reach a sending off nowadays, but how is this not a deliberate last-man foul and hence red card? :D. The attacker is alone with an open goal and only runs wide to try and break free from the very blatant holding. I don't really blame Makkelie for giving a YC, this is the 'spirit' of what they are taught, but still...
68' - Very good, even excellently seen, play on for me, after attacker tries to win a penalty by putting his legs where it would generate contact with the defender. However, can also understand the view that defender's actions are too clumsy / careless and hence a penalty should be awarded anyway.
About appointment predictions: to be honest, I am not very good at them, so I leave that to others who are simply better at making those educated guesses than me!
Mikael is refereeing by the book, without football understanding :-) Football doesn’t ask for book referees, they want referees who had feeling for the game.

Off-topic: fun fact, a Dutch friend of mine is interested in genealogy, and told me that the name ‘Makkelie’ is not common in the Netherlands and actually from Scottish origin. Apparently all Dutch names starting with ‘Mak’ are from Scottish origin (‘Mac’). For example the name of former attacker ‘Makaay’ is a phonetically adaptation of the Scottish name MacKay. The BBC are always pronouncing his name as ‘MacKelly’. I bet that could be pretty close to the original name.
