  1. I was actually going to write a comment yesterday about the possibilty of a "lower" Elite referee in Liverpool but thought it's probably unlikely + appointments are already made before first leg results but here we are :D
I think the "safe" way would have been Orsato in Madrid and Siebert in Liverpool but I thought there is a high chance that Orsato will be saved for a SF so Siebert is the expected choice in Madrid.

I'm not trying to discredit Benfica but looking at all the other QF matches and first leg results, this is the match where you can take the "risk" of appointing a "lower" Elite referee. I think there just wasn't anyone left of the very trusted officials who could have been appointed tbh. Cakir, Hategan and Karasev are not available, Makkelie and Orsato saved for SF/F, another Spaniard was unlikely after first leg, Jovanovic/Massa/Meler already had CL R16, the likes of Bastien/Aytekin/Sidiropoulus/Dias etc. are out of favour and are not trusted enough for a CL QF. Which leaves you with the new Elite referees: Letexier, Schärer, Sanchez Martinez and Gözübüyük. Out of these four, Gözübüyük seems to be the most trusted.

Btw I'm not saying I agree with the way this is done but it seems quite logical to me tbh. Whether all this is the right thing to do, you have to judge for yourselves.

    1. Can you explain why Soares Dias is now out of favor (so much so as to be placed in the same category as Bastien, Aytekin, and Sidiropoulos)? I haven't followed his situation closely

      Delete
    2. Tbh neither have I but his appointments this season have been disappointing. He's still without a EL KO match. His appointment in the NL relegation play out could have been a replacement but either way he is ranked quite low by UEFA at the moment.

    3. Well I guess I was wrong about Dias :D

  2. I like Siebert, but at this rate the committee will give him the CL final, it seems a bit premature to give him matches of this complexity and importance...

    1. I agree, he is a bit overrated by Committee. He probably will get CL final in 2/3 yrs :)

    2. A cynic might even think that Rosetti deliberately tries to destroy Siebert by these appointments. Orsato is the PERFECT name for this game, experience (especially of such technically demanding games), leadership style, whereas Siebert is a newbie, the Italian only has months left of his (brilliant!) career now.

In the end he did well (enough) I think, but Siebert really teetered in the group stage's Atlético vs. Liverpool and also in Villarreal; one can hope that he doesn't fall this time. The recklessness of this appointment, in addition to the randomness of the other (let's wait for the attacks in reply - the shakiness of Porto vs. Lazio was quite the opposite to a CL QF recommendation); oh Mr Rosetti...

  3. At this point, I think that Orsato is injured, because he skipped two Matchdays in serie A but he was not appointed in Champions League.
Let's see whether tomorrow he will appear in the other competitions, but it is unlikely, he would have officiated some games in serie A before, in this case.
Very surprising to read Gözübüyük's name in CL KO stage, I didn't expect him for this game. Given that we had Gil Manzano in first leg, we can say that Liverpool - Benfica has been treated differently by committee if compared to the other three clashes.
Also, important to say, Gözübüyük and not Makkelie can mean that the latter is kept for something bigger in CL, otherwise he would have officiated this game.
More generally, I think we should like to see new names in CL KO stage, finally.
About Siebert, I was not sure after Villarreal - Juventus, but it was the same as Marciniak, at first Conference League, then now again Champions. I don't think he will get CL final, my prediction at meximum is Conference League final for him, but surely this one will be a very challenging game for the German and he must do better than Villarreal.

    1. Ah - thanks, in that case I (of course) take my comment back about Orsato.

    2. Hopefully just sth preventive and nothing serious. Orsato is very much needed in a Semi-final (return game!).

      Delete
    3. Not so sure about that. Orsato has been appointed for 3 consecutive Serie A matchdays in March, something unusual for Daniele, so maybe Rocchi wants to manage him even considering the final sprint where Orsato will be very important and that in the last two matchdays there were not suitable games for him.

    4. Very good appointment for Gözübüyük!

Do you guys think that Gözübüyük is appointed because of his good game thursday (Bodo-Roma) or was this appointment already made?

  4. Siebert just has these appointments mainly because Rosetti was his trainer... Don't think he is on such a big phase to handle Madrid and City players...

    1. After all happened in Turkey, I think it is impossible to see him again in UEFA games this season.

  6. I think, for Felix Zwayer it might be rather tough to act as Fourth Official behind Daniel Siebert; an appointment which he, Zwayer, might perceive as a kind of consolation prize and as a sign, that higher ranks are not within reach for him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Zwayer isn't a bad referee, just than the match between Bayern and Dortmund a few months ago lowered her career considerably.

      Delete
    2. Analizing the appointments, Zwayer fourth official in that game is only because committee prefers to have an Elite referee as fourth for such games, if possible. So easy to send another Elite from the same country. I think Zwayer himself is aware of that.

    1. A very, very weak performance (lost control, many missed cards making the game brutal) in Rangers - Slavia before EURO and injury this season. Someone reported also a poor performance in Ludogorets - Olymbiakós in August but I didn't see this game.

      Delete
    2. Before being promoted to Elite on December 2019, he had shown very good performances, to justify the choice by committee.
Unluckily, after having got the highest rank as UEFA referee, some months ago, he started with rather controversial performances and he missed many opportunities due to that.
I would say decisive moment of his career was the beginning of 2021, when he was assigned at first to CL KO stage with a game like Lazio - Bayern, I think at that time committee had a great trust in him. But this was the turning point, as he didn't manage to convince anymore the months after. Not a positive year, with a very poor EURO, he stayed only with NED - AUT, as you said, then not a good experience at Olympics that summer, surely better than EURO but still he could have got more.
After that, he had to face several injures, to complete a very negative disappointment. Difficult to be back, he should again convince committee, in the middle he had some issues in hot games in Europa League as well.

    3. Oh, I understand, I really thought he would become a level referee, consolidated. I'm sorry for him

  15. Id say they are more deserving than the latter three. However what concerns me more is that we have refs from smaller countries that are equally good as Gozubuyuk or Massa (scharer/visser come to my mind) who do get really overlooked in favor of Nl and Italy. A pity imo

  16. Visser surely not. Defintely not. Maybe you wanted to say Letexier.

    4. Elfath and Escobar are 100% locks, barring some act of God.

There will surely be a Mexican as well; I think Ramos is most likely, but possibly also Hernandez or, less likely, Guerrero.

That leaves one spot if you retain the same number from 2018 (4 main referees). My gut tells me it will go to Barton, but I think Martinez also has a good chance.

Finally I would like to add the interesting case of Jair Marrufo. He has had a very long career and attended the World Cup in 2018 as the "second choice" American referee behind Geiger, and he refereed one game. Then he went and did the Club World Cup Final that year. It seemed he was in line to be the #1 USA referee in 2022, but it has since become clear that Elfath is the #1. Marrufo has faded into the background, not too many big assignments internationally. Is this because he is a known commodity being protected, or because he is taking a back seat? My personal opinion is that he should go - he is, in my view, the most talented referee on the continent right now. It is certainly possible that FIFA takes two Americans - appointing two referees from the same CONCACAF country is not at all unusual for the World Cup; it has happened in 3 of the last 5 editions. It is also possible that he will attend as a VAR, or not at all - no one can say for sure right now.

In summary, these are my predictions (alternative predictions are shown in parentheses):

      ELFATH
      ESCOBAR
      RAMOS (Hernandez)
      BARTON (Martinez, Marrufo)

  19. I prefer Ostojich, because as you say, he has lost great tournaments but he whistled the final of the cup america and the club world cup, that gives you a good "sign" towards WC.

Leodan Gonzalez (in my opinion) will go as VAR with Cunha.

    1. The case of Uruguay is very interesting to me. You have

      - Cunha, who was so trusted as to work the big semifinal in 2018,

      - Gonzalez, the frontrunner whose qualification campaign was derailed by two bouts of COVID with terrible timing

      - Ostojich, the replacement for Gonzalez in those situations, who mostly impressed

      - Matonte, who got a call to the Arab Cup in one of the last moments to prove himself

I have no idea what to make of the situation. I think the spot should go to Gonzalez, or maybe Ostojich, but I have no idea who will actually be selected.

    2. Without wishing to be become too 'the Pepe Silvia meme from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia', so long as 'we' aren't talking about how 'scandalous' and ridiculously political Gözübüyük's appointment is (and it is completely absurd, to be clear), I don't think that 'they' care.

No focus on performances at all, only trying to keep associations happy, avoid controversy or a completely failing mark and you'll be safe, doing everything to undermine the category system so that it doesn't exist, a weak committee (leader) who does everything the politician(s) says - this is the UEFA refereeing scene I know from the WC86-time era, and crazy how we've returned there about 35yrs(!) later.

When we add the crazy guidelines from the winter course (maybe treat the top referees like adults, or at least not like idiots...), I would argue that it is an unparalledly low time to be a UEFA referee (follower).

      Delete
    3. The only guideline is that you have to be from the Netherlands, italy or to lesser extent spain to get your big appointments at UEFA these days..
It bodes well if the trend continues. In that case in 10 years we Will have the Kooij and Vd Eijk at the Elite top.... cant wait to see how that turns out ;)

      Delete
    4. Mikael, could you expand a bit more on what the guidelines from the winter course are? I don't remember hearing about them.

      Delete
    5. Very lenient disciplinary (more so than EURO), make the games artificially exciting by ignoring clear(!) fouls, when the players (naturally) complain about it, more freedom to caution them than usual.

      Delete
    6. I have mixed feelings when I read this discussion. In general, I disagree when a referee does not respect the LOTG. I will always disagree when a referee does not whistle 100% clear fouls. On the other hand, I’m trying to reflect and to understand what FIFA/UEFA tries to achieve and what football wants (the players, supporters). In recent years, we have seen many referees that whistled all small contacts. I think, FIFA/UEFA want to get a rid of that, to make games more attractive. Sometimes I do understand when a referee does not issue a YC according to the LOTG, but only if it helps him to keep control.

Let’s say: the implementation of new guidelines is not going very smooth. The changes are too drastic in a short time and some referees have overshot the floor (not sure this is correct English?). Other referees clearly struggle to adapt and this has impact on their game control.

      Delete
    7. In addition, another development are the so-called ‘soft’ penalties no longer being whistled.
I can be wrong, but I assume this is actually one of the (in)direct consequences of the VAR implementation? At first, the purpose of VAR was too avoid big scandals in football. To avoid that a referees carrier would be destroyed after a big fault. After the introduction of the VAR, it was noted that video assistants were looking at all contacts in the box under a magnifying glass (also very small contacts). Players adapted to that and, sometimes, we saw exaggerated reactions from players after a contact in the box. For instance, the attacker of Inter Milan (Dzeko), is very smart and falls after a very small contact, acting like he is hurt. I understand people who say: stupid action from defender. On the other hand, I also don’t understand why such a big guy (192 cm) should fall down so easily. Maybe, not whistling soft penalties is a kind of counter-reaction on these developments? I hope you get my point, my English is not so great. I assume, the referee on the pitch more and more has to evaluate whether the contact is blatant enough to cause a fall?
I’m not sure this is a good development. I think, ‘careless’ fouls (according to the LOTG) are internationally not always whistled anymore? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    8. Thanks for thoughtful and considered comment(s) Rob_81!

I broadly with everything besides quite strongly disagreeing actually, that until recently we had a lot of pedantic referees - UEFA (understandably) tried to completely remove such officiating for the last ten-ish(?) years.

If you have the time, watch K. Vassáras's performance in R. Madrid vs. Roma in 2008 - a very good one by the (very good) Greek referee, but one could never imagine such a (relatively) pedantic line in foul recognition as that in today's CL.

The problem with the UEFA guidelines from the winter course is that the tie in impeding-type and contact-type offences as the same thing. I am the first person to celebrate a generous acceptance of contacts in the games, but impeding offences are NOT in the same category; players can never, and will never, be able to run through 'brick walls'. Hence, they get very annoyed when refs turn a blind eye to such offences. I think UEFA should rethink this element a bit.

  22. As a Costa Rican, it hurts me not to see any Costa Rican referee on the WC lists, the only one with possibilities is Ricardo Montero (who was in WC2018) but in the local tournament he always offers bad performances, at the CONCACAF level the same, he never looks good and it is difficult for a referee like this to go to a WC

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Incorrect. Hall didn't like Montero in the end, so he jettisoned him from all the FIFA pre-list courses, replaced by more-favoured compatriot Calderón. I highly doubt Rizzoli has reversed that, too.

If you are going to change the topic so aggressively, at least be accurate when doing it! :P

      Delete
    2. same bro, Calderon is not a guarantee, sometimes yes and sometimes no, but hopefully one appears on the final list! :]

      Delete
    3. I would be really shocked if Calderon is at the World Cup 2022 as a referee. He's very far behind some other candidates, like Barton and Martinez.

      Delete
    4. Actually, Montero attended the FIFA pre-selected course last fall, Calderon was preferred within Concacaf until 2021 and now the Costa Rican with most appointments in Concacaf is young Herrera (28).

    5. About Montero and the course - that is not what I heard ;).

  23. As a Dutch person, I must say that I am both surprised and happy about the Gozobuyuk appointment. In recent years, I have always been a critique of Gozobuyuk and his way of managing matches. But one must admit that this season, his European matches were mostly at good level and he was not undeserving of a good appointment in the KO-stages. Also in the Dutch competition, I see a different Gozobuyuk, much more the referee that we used to see, more focussed, good with players. Maybe it's a bit early and I'd have preferred a Round of 16 match, but I do think Gozobuyuk made a good development and that he earned his matches mostly, this season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you had told me before the season that Jovanovic, Meler, Massa, and Gozobuyuk would all make their CL debuts this year, the latter of which in the second leg of a quarterfinal(!!), that would have sounded completely crazy. But here we are. It really highlights the shortage at the top of UEFA refereeing, caused in part by some retirements and in part by some awful luck (Cakir, Hategan, and Karasev being surprisingly unavailable).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Add to the list: Orsato injured, and then as well the complexities due to the high number of English and Spanish teams. Slim pickings for UEFA right now.

      Delete
  25. @ RikB. The main criticism of people is committee making political choices. Some examples:
-If Orsato doesn’t have a game for some reason, we will see a KO-appointment of Massa.
-Siebert – I like him a lot – is pushed way too much. Germany wants a successor of Felix Brych at the WC. He is really talented but, dear committee, calm down please. Don’t risk him too much.
-When Marciniak was injured last year, we saw some other Polish refs in the KO-stages. Where are they now?
-We have seen some Dutch refs in the KO-stages when mr. Kuipers was injured.
-Kovacs in a QF CL was probably a replacement for Hategan. The one thing I didn’t understand is why he was assigned to the Atletico game. It was speculated that Hategan was the referee for CHE-RMA. Why would they swap things up if the Atletico game is a more difficult tie to officiate? I don’t get it.
I haven’t seen a lot games of Gozubuyuk. Just the Porto-Lazio game, in which he was a bit shaky. But he was well accepted, he didn’t loose control, no controversies which seems to be the most important thing for committee nowadays. The “main” reason of appointing Gozubuyuk in QF CL is because Makkelie is saved for (at least) a SF CL. To make the association happy. Well, and the fact that the Elite poule is very narrow, and Karasev and Hategan are out, doesn’t help either. Of course. I think, Jovanovic deserves it more than Gozubuyuk.

    1. Totally agree that performances by Jovanovic > Gözübüyük.
Alas, Jovanovic just had a very high profile EL match (FRA-BAR) under Rosetti, which should have helped his chance to go to the World Cup.

Whereas this CL match can't be expected to be challenging given the score in the first match, so giving Gözübüyük a chance here seems absolutely fair.

  38. Accouncer said, "Referee Daniel Siebert is letting an awful lot go, both ways." Let's hope it doesn't spiral out of control and he shows a card or two if needed.

    1. You can't say that because in case of booking by Siebert after first foul, things would have turned out differently. Let's say, referee gave a bonus to Atlético player...

      Delete
    2. Even if he was on a YC, no chance a referee would send him off for that foul in a CL quarter final...

  40. Good start from the Dutch ref in LIVBEN (too long for me to try and spell!!). Has good control and good foul detection

  41. Good job to Gozubuyuk, my opinion

  42. 36' Griezman took out Man City player but no call by Siebert by call by AR. Earlier it appeared Foden got tripped in Atletico end and no call, and De Bruyne kicked Atletico player quite hard in Atletico box and no call. I wanted to give Siebert the benefit of the doubt, but a poor performance so far, I'd say.

  43. I think people are being too harsh on Siebert for now to be honest. I do think there were some moments where he looked weak (especially in comparison with the great performances of Vincic and Marciniak yesterday), but the game is not a lost cause yet. Let's see how the second half goes first.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think that if we make an assessment based on what we should have expected from a referee officiating this game, without the particular reference that it was Siebert, this assessment should be below expectations, because early YC had to be issued and there were other moments in which referee looked to be a bit in trouble. But if we see things from the specific point of view of Siebert, at this level for the first time and in a very challenging game, we could say that his job overall is still OK. No more than that, though, and personally I think that after Villarreal - Juventus for this game he would have had a different approach, I was wrong.
Second half will be now decisive, with Atlético that will try everything for sure. We will see.

  45. An average first half by Siebert IMO

  46. Now Marijo Strahonja, ex croatian ref, criticized Siebert' performance.

Not being concentrated enough, allowing too much phisicality and mobbing by Atletico, missed couple corners and he is having problems, he said.

If we remember, he has history of bad management with 'hot and temperamently teams', Napoli-Granada, Besiktas - Rio Ave, his style may work in Bundesliga and fair play teams, but not with Atletico.

I expect even more challenging 2nd half.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The issue is that this is his style, rather than a wrong approach and he doesn't change it, I think committee is aware of that.

    2. I agree with that Chefren and I think that's why UEFA likes him so much (apart from the obvious push to have a new german top ref). He fully embodies the narrative UEFA have been pushing for the last while (allowing a lot more physical play, letting the game flow, ignoring clear yellow cards).

      Delete
  47. I actually don't think it was a bad performance by Siebert so far. Yes he missed a clear YC and there were a few situations where he had some issues but this is a very challenging match. He's trying to let the game flow as much as possible which is risky but he is consistent so far so I don't see any issues with that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. We can clearly say that UEFA's referee pool has never been so narrow. Without big names like Çakır, Karasev, Hategan, Orsato, Makellie, nothing more can be expected from a less experienced Siebert. There are so many mediocre referees, I miss the referees from 1 year ago

    1. Yep, we can see how much Kuipers and Brych are missed.

    2. Yes, I was going to ask why there aren't as many top elites as before? Is referee training the answer or just chance or VAR showing/correcting more mistakes than before or has the game gotten more physical and faster? Just throwing out ideas.

    4. If it was Skomina because it was political, Vincic would never have been elite, and if it had been Kuipers, Gözübüyük would not have been bigger. Referees such as Meler, Massa, Gözübüyük and Bastien got these promotions just because they were political, and I think the problems at UEFA will get bigger in the coming years as this continues.

    5. And if Brych were the same, Siebert would never have been elite

    6. I'm really fed up with your bashing some referees all the time in all the topics. It's not Vincic's, Gozubuyuk's or Massa's fault that Cakir has been banned by the Turkish referee committee. And before you attack me, I agree Cakir was a great referee.

      Delete
    7. Cakir had some ‘political’ trouble since last year… appointments in EURO2021 were absolutely crazy, totally dominated by GER / NED referees and Cakir sent home at QF instead of officiate a well-deserved SF / F.

    8. It's the political promotion of these referees, and there's Meler in it, why don't you see this, the most mediocre referees of the last 3-4 years, and my opinions, if you're tired, don't write anonymously

  49. How much aggressive is Simeone, during first half I noticed he argued with Zwayer, now with AR1, reproaching him for having raised flag without waiting for the end of action, he also made VAR gesture, I think this is definitely enough, I would send off a coah like Simeone in the first minute of the game.

    1. Yes this is ridiculous. The officials are way too soft for Simeone. Same for Koke's gestures

  55. There we go. The mass confrontation you could see coming in min 89. Siebert has lost control. I would have liked more prevention there

  56. The mass confrontation shows us that Zwayer is by far more used to handle such situations, he immediately helped Siebert being more active than the referee himself and suggesting decisions.

  61. Im sorry but Siebert is avery good referee, but he is too calm for this hot matches. If he wanna go far in European comeptitions he has to learn how to change his style. I dont understand why he avoids to caution when he has to :(

    1. Oh Come on a ref at this level has to be able to adapt the style a bit to the match at hand. If Siebert cant he is Just below par for the top top matches. As he has shown tonight

      Delete
    2. Modern refereeing... or...?

      Delete
    3. That's my interpretation exactly, he is too calm and slow in a game like this. In lots of games that will work, but not in this very intense game with a team like Atletico. The referee needs to be more intense and very active, like the styles we see from South America a lot.

I think Siebert will struggle in Qatar if he gets teams (especially from Latin America, but not exclusively) who play a similarly emotional, intense, "dark arts" style like Atletico. He needs to be more willing to adapt if he wants to be able to handle these challenging matches.

That said, everything we say here must be taken within the context that this WAS a *difficult* match. Lots of great referees would struggle with it, and none would be able to mind-control players into behaving well.

      Delete
  62. Siebert was definitely not quick enough to react to the kick out in the corner near 90 minutes. I was hesitant earlier, but can say now that this has been a weak performance, albeit in a challenging game.

  63. Simeone does what he wants, I simply don't understand why referees must be so lenient! Let's stop this behavior!

  70. I like Siebert, but he wasn't the right ref for this match.

If he wants to be, he needs to show authority early on through YCs for ATH players and sending Simeone off for leaving the coaching zone repeatedly and generally being a douchebag. There really is not team more antisocial in European football than Atletico and the only language they'd understand is clear authority.

I'm glad he finally sent Felipe off though.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Zwayer so good in helping Siebert during mass confrontation, so poor in allowing everything to Simeone, but we can easily draw conclusion that it is modern football that doesn't want to see coaches sent off.
VG in the comment above is 100% right.

  72. Well done Mr Rosetti - with the crazy guidelines you completely disarm referees (especially Siebert, whose thesis for success is not charisma, fitness etc; but tactical approach), and then you appoint the newbie to this Atlético vs. Manchester City and completely destroy him, as you’ve threatened to all season. Very weak Siebert, he needs a break after that.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Seriously guys, it is as if none if you ever refereed a game. Blaming siebert for the last fifteen minutes is utterly outrageous, he did everything he could to keep an uncontrollable situation under control and kept his calm, so for that alone he should be commended, not criticized.

  74. To be honest, I don’t blame Siebert, we all know that controling Atletico’s players and Simeone is difficult for every referee. Most important, Siebert did not make any big mistakes and I hope this last 20 minutes will be a lesson for him for the future to maybe react more strictly and less lenient.

    ReplyDelete
  75. At least Gozubuyuk had a good night. 2 times the VAR intervened too award a goal for Benfica which was first called offside. From what i saw the situations were really close for the AR. Not that much to report further from Liverpool. Siebert absolutely failed the test. Gozubuyuk positively surprised me today

  78. I didn't watch the game but aren't there always problems with Atletico in high pressure situations? Simeone has always been a pain in the ass. I don't know if the game management of Orsato or Turpin would have necessarily prevented a confrontation at some point in the game...Again didn't watch the game just going with the comments on here

  79. Can’t The Ref com use referees personality to appoint referees for a match???? It is so so embarrassing to see Seibert today!!! He looked so so lost. If not for Zwayer.

  80. Rosetti is 100% guilty of that situation.

  81. Re: Simeone's caution: In minute 90+10' and in that match context you either ignore the manager's behaviour or just send him off, in-between things like the YC are pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  82. So easy to say it was out of control ! Can you name only one moment that Siebert was not calm? Or just name a decision that indiceted the result of the match (like Marciniak the other day with the goal from the corner kick) ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sometimes (like today) being too calm/passive leeds to matches boiling over. Thats the biggest reason why siebert failed today. He was unable to increase the presence when it was absolutely needed

  83. Definitely this had to be the match for Orsato, he would not have allowed any disrespectful behaviour towards the refereeing team, that IMO lacked charisma to manage such a heated match. I remember last year's CHE-ATM, where Orsato sent off Savic for an elbow showing RC and yelling at his face at the same time, avoiding any shameful reaction by Atlético players as the ones we saw tonight. Very tough match, for very few referees (probably only Orsato or Makkelie)

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't want to criticize Siebert too much, because it was very challenging match anyway, but I would say, that in such much, it's better to use different approach, you should act more like a low enforcer, IMO, because if not, it will lead to the mass confrontation.

    ReplyDelete
  85. My comment on Siebert:

I agree with most of you, it was not the right match for him. Perhaps he lacks a little more experience in final instance matches.

Instead, Zwayer showed good control. Perhaps Zwayer could have handled the game better.

Regarding Simeone, yes, he always exceeds his claims and no referee (as far as I know) has dared to expel him in the first few minutes.

And Felipe, it is unfortunate to see this type of attitude. Well expelled.

Thank heavens the game didn't go into overtime, because otherwise it would have made it more difficult for Siebert and maybe stain his career.

    I give him a 6/10.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Not a chance any ref, ever could solve that tonight. Unfortunately Siebert looked a bit like a rabbit in headlights. Can definitely see why they’ve tried to shield Makkelie to keep a ref available for the final…

    ReplyDelete
  87. This kind of HOT games can only be managed well by Makkelie and Orsato. Perhaps Marciniak also, but then it ends. Unbelievable that Makkelie is appointed for conference league while ATM - MC would have been the right match for him.

    ReplyDelete
  88. After what we saw in this match, I just remembered CAKIR's performance in madrid derby few years ago when he was great and nothing like that happened, + I think committe should thank god because the other team was ENGLISH, focusing playing F.B,we started feeling boring from watching same faces every round.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Overall a bit of a mess. Siebert is a good referee but shouldn't be expected to handle this kind of clash yet. UEFA have severely limited their options.

That being said, Atletico prove once again they are one of if not the most challenging teams to referee in Europe. Yes, Siebert missed a YC for Felipe earlier on, and did not demonstrate authority (as mentioned he is more technical than charismatic). Savic should have been sent off and so should Simeone, but I am honestly unsure if ANY referee would show them 3 RC's as they seem to get away with it time and time again.

I don't think this will damage Siebert in the long-term because of the impossibility of the mass confrontation. He must learn and will likely be given a break from high profile UEFA games.
