  1. I expected Rebecca Welch in final. Very difficult to make a prediction now. We have to exclude Frappart, due to the French team that will reach it, and Huerta de Aza (possible candidate as well) due to Barcelona that won 5-1 first leg. Then, it is about the referees appointed for semifinals, Martincic would be out because she officiated a game. Maybe a Swedish or Finnish choice this time...

    1. Lehtovaara? After a final test (BAR-RMA) in the QF

    2. Could have bet my house on Rebecca Welch getting the Final just Like Makkelie!! Which is UEFA might surprise us with Makkelie as well and just see him In Villarreal, we never know.

    3. It was unbelievable to me that Frappart didn't get the final last year, the once-in-a-decade (or more) opportunity to not have a French team in the final and they passed it up... terrible management by UEFA there.

      Delete
    4. I agree, that Lehtovaara seems to be the most obvious name now.
About Monzul: Could be an appointment as a political sign (+ the fact that she is among the very top officials), but I don't know whether she is considered ready in her current situation.

    5. It seems that Sian Massey-Ellis is still not fully recovered (only appointed as AVAR) with less than 2 months before the Women's Euro. In spite of that, she was selected as AR. With all due respect, would that happen if a male AR would not be fully recovered before a final tournament? I am not aware of any similar case at such high level...

    6. @smala017, I was surprised as well, because it is possible that Frappart will not have any further chance in future due to French teams, but as it was discussed one year ago on the blog, it was due to a very poor performance in a KO stage game she officiated (Atlético Madrid - Chelsea). But for the same reason, performance principle, this year it looked quite sure to see Welch. Committee is really unpredictable and they don't show to have always the same criteria for a choice. Also, maybe another reason could be that they wanted to assign either Lehtovaara of Olofsson to CL final before, but they had to maske experience with VAR before...

  2. I'm hearing rumours that Former FIFA referees Jon Moss and Martin Atkinson are to follow Mike Dean into Retirement with Jon and Martin receiving roles with the PGMOL.

    1. It is already reported by all English media.
"Martin Atkinson and Jon Moss will retire from their roles as Premier League referees at the end of this season. The pair will take up backroom roles at the Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL). Atkinson, 51, will coach the Select Group 1 (the pool of Premier League referees), while Moss, also 51, will manage the group."

    2. I don't trust anything until its released by the pgmol itself

    3. If this is the case then the PGMOL really needs to begin to put trust in their newly promoted refs. This season, Salisbury, Brooks, and Harrington were promoted to SG1 and have refereed a combined total of 7 games (yes, combined!). Why promote them and then not trust them? Gillett was also promoted and has been a little more trusted, with 7 games himself - as a former FIFA referee this may be more expected.

PGMOL like to give 'big' games also to Atkinson, Moss, Marriner, Dean and occasionally Friend. This makes sense given their experience, however given their age makes it worrying for what will happen when they are gone, which is likely soon and all at once.

In terms of the 'big' PL clashes going forward: Of course Oliver and Taylor will be ever present. Pawson is now a reliable pair of hands. Tierney has had his chances and in my opinion underperformed. Attwell has had some big clashes but still needs to prove he is capable of handling them regularly. Kavanagh looked as though he would excel in recent years but injuries and disappointing appointments this season mean this is still unsure.

I think the most likely referees to start receiving 'big' games will be Madley and Gillett, as well as possibly Coote and England.

It is hard to tell how good a referee really is when they are never given consistent runs, which PGMOL are certainly guilty of. The situation must change and Riley must trust his younger referees.

    4. Some might even suggest Riley should depart with them…

    5. They really need to bring Webb back to England within the next couple of years.

    6. No, let him stay with us. Howard Webb is doing a great job with PRO.

    1. Same comment by me; it's strange to mix English and dutch members, not helpful

      Delete
    2. It is indeed a very particular choice. I was due to comment about that as well. I think that VAR teams are at stadium, as it was for all the games in all club competitions of this KO stage, so very likely reason could be that committee wanted to ensure a certain experience by splitting the Dutchmen, one in Wolfsburg and the other in Paris. In any case, Chrstopher Kavanagh with Sian Massey-Ellis in a game, and Pol van Boekel with Dennis Higler would have been by far more and more logical.

Georgi Kabakov (UEFA 1st) will handle the Greek SL clash PAOK - AEK on Sunday. His assistants are Margaritov and Valkov. VAR is Stoyanov.

Aliyar Aghayev (UEFA 1st) will hadle the Panathinaikos - ARIS match also on Sunday. His assistants are Zeynalov and Amirali. VAR is Santos (POR).

Btw I think it's clear that Clattenburg needs to go now. You can't have a convicted SL observer and appoint him twice after the courts decision. Or an observer on SL2 who has falsified his ID in order to change his DOB and appoint him on the last MD of SL2.

Unfortunately Greek refereeing is a complete mess.

  8. Some observation.
Saying that Turpin cannot referee RMA-MCI because he referees on Sunday in Ligue 1 is a false tip.

Turpin refereed Saint-Etienne - Marseille on 3rd April (Sunday) and RMA-CHE quarterfinal on 6th April (Wednesday), same for Marciniak (domestic game Pogon Szczecin-Legia on Sunday 24th April, and LIV-VIL semifinal on Wednesday, 27th April ).

Finally, if we want to talk about politics, Turpin officiated the Europa League final last year, and this year the final will be played in France. Isn't it 'too much' for France, talking about politics?

  9. Off topic
@Matei stated that Kovacs covered more than 13 kms in the first leg in Manchester. That's a lot. An intense, high paced game like RMA-MCI is perfect for Turpin. I'm not sure about Orsato (and his physical issues?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, that's right. I can not guarantee 100% the accuracy of the information but that was said on TV by a respected guest and then published by all sports websites, so it should be true. 13.4 kilometres.
I thought also at Orsato's physical issues as a reason to avoid appointing him in Madrid. But the scenario with Turpin in Madrid and Orsato in Villarreal sounds very good to me.

  10. Artus Dias has a brilliant game in QF in EL.
Any possibility for him a semi in CL?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He should have been 4th official in Manchester last week but was replaced with Scharer. I think someone said that Dias got injured during a game in Portugal and was substitued at halftime. But UCL semifinal was anyway too much for him.

      Delete
    2. I think Liverpool-Villarreal would've been a suitable game for him, but he has been replaced in a La Liga NOS game, then from his 4h official appointment in City-Real, so very likely he is currently injured.

    1. Giovanni, on this blog many people wrote about Kuipers (NED) as observer in RMA-MCI, so Makkelie is 100% out for that game. About Vincic, he did 4th official in LIV VIL, I doubt he can get the same match twice.
About Turpin… well, we have to ‘wait and see’ if politics matters more than performance :)

    2. I forgot for Vinčic and Kuipers : thanks !
Just a question : it's not "strange" to see both Dutchman together ? (Makkelie and Kuipers)

      Delete
    3. If you mean both Dutch together in RMA-MCI, it is impossibile of course, Makkelie and Kuipers are compatriots and good friends :) if you mean Kuipers as observer in Madrid and Makkelie as referee in Villarreal, why not.

  14. Siebert has now screwed up a 3. Liga game as well - I think it would be best for everyone (UEFA, Siebert himself and possible teams involved) to not give him another international match this season. He seems out of form, which is very understandable given all the events he's had this season (EURO, a lot of important games, CL knock-out games, becoming a father). I don't think another game for him would go well and I fear it could hurt his confidence quite a bit.

  19. Below some potential red card incidents from the Corinthians vs. Boca Juniors game from Copa Libertadores this week, handled by Andrés Matonte from Uruguay.

    https://streamable.com/5mjggu
    https://streamable.com/htfryb
    https://streamable.com/bdvtzn

Having watched the match, let me say this - it is quite shocking that such an incredibly mediocre and poor referee is in line to attend the World Cup later this year. Matonte was completely out of his depth (one could expect such a referee never to get out of the old UEFA 3rd Category, to be honest). Displaying zero preventative or management skills, the game spiraling out of control on multiple occasions was the only logical consequence of this very poor performance by the Uruguayan ref.

I fear that FIFA/CONMEBOL drew very different conclusions from Matonte's Arab Cup than us...

    1. Ostojich and Cunha are back now, under the new leadership of Caceres, but it might be too late for a WC scheduled in 6 months...

      Delete
    2. Second potential red card incident could have been definitely prevented by referee with a quicker reaction after the previous misconduts and by identifying the problematic players. First incident is by far more red card than the third one, but of course in all scenes RC would have been appropriate choice.

      Delete
    3. Especially the third one is shocking. I must add that it already starts with the yellow socks, against the yellow socks of Boca Juniors. But he seems like a referee with few control, few prevention and very responsive, not getting the respect. Than again - that's three clips.

  20. I think 5 CONMEBOL referees will go to the WC:
    Claus (BRA)
    Sampaio (BRA)
    Ostojich (URU)
    Tobar (CHI)
    Valenzuela (VEN)
    Rapallini (ARG).

I know that it is unlikely that 2 Brazilian referees will go to the WC but I do not see that another referee can get into the final list.

    - Ortega (PER) is very young and lacks a track record to be considered a candidate, I am sure he will attend in 2026.

    - Diaz De Vivar (PAR), famous for expelling Messi in Copa America 2019, seemed like he could be a candidate but not He gave up and I don't consider it.

    - Rojas (COL) seemed like he would replace Roldán in WC22 but he has been in many controversies, even he has been suspended by CONMEBOL.

    - Guerrero (ECU) I don't see him in the WC, maybe in 2026.

    - Vargas (BOL) Bolivian arbitration has never been considered by CONMEBOL (although it hurts), they never give Bolivia opportunities. Gery Vargas (the most qualified referee in Bolivia) 0 qualifying rounds this year 0 Copa America 2021... He will not be considered by FIFA. Maybe like VAR.

    - Herrera (VEN) Jesús Valenzuela won the race for WC, Herrera 100 for sure in 2026.

The 5 options mentioned by me are, in my opinion, the most qualified for WC in Qatar.

  21. And in CONCACAF, I think there will be 5 central referees:
    Elfath (USA),
    Martínez (HON)
    Montero (CRC)
    Ramos (MEX)
    Escobar (GUA).
And a support referee: Barton (SLV). Barton disappointed me at PUMAS-SEATTLE, I don't like the personality he has, he always wants to steal the show. The arrogance with which he referees, I hate.

Elfath, Ramos and Escobar will be in Qatar.
The case of Martinez is very interesting, a young referee who has managed to handle the pressure of CONCACAF, giving him the Gold Cup final this summer, he was in the Arab Cup and being in big tournaments, some controversy there, but I like it.

Montero from CR, has stayed away from international tournaments (Olympics, Club World Cup, Qualifiers, CONCACAF Tournaments). Very famous for the controversy at the opening of the 2021 Gold Cup, where Lozano (MEX) had an impressive injury to his face and all the blame was placed on the referee, where in my opinion, the VAR SHOULD have come into action. But he did nothing. Punishing him with no more matches in the Gold Cup. An already mature referee, he has 2 international tournaments, 1 WC as a reserve and I think he will do well in Qatar.

Fischer (CAN), Marrufo (USA) and Guerrero (MEX) will go as VAR.
