  1. So, appointed for CL semi finals but not for EURO. Interesting…

  2. For me, this is a clear confirmation that she will be the exchange referee going to the South American tournament.

  3. Rocchi is observing right now Sozza in Udinese - Salernitana, postponed serie A game. Since there are two big games on next matchday and not so many options, I think that he could get the first very big assignment of his career, as culmination of an excellent season: either Inter - Roma or Lazio - Milan.
Today serie A appointments were expected, but they will be released only tomorrow and that's another clue for that.

  4. OT: Absolutely joke of a performance by darren england as var in chelsea arsenal today. To not overturn that penalty call by jon moss

  5. Watching Chelsea - Arsenal (ref: J. Moss). And I would say, completely wrong penalty on 90'+2, and clear RC for SFP for Mount missed earlier in my opinion opinion, only YC issued. I have only one question, where is a VAR in that game?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the VAR very obviously recommended Mount’s caution (“check for SFP complete, Jon”), with Moss having no intention to book before that, so he was somewhere! :D

Personally, I think yellow is just right for Mount - he was just running forwards and the (very dangerous) contact is more genuine bad luck than excessive force IMO. The penalty seems to have been completely accepted here, though it looked dubious to me; I’d like another look.

    2. 32' - APP offence?

      82' - Second YC? (management)

      84' - SFP?
      https://streamable.com/fofd0x

      90' - Penalty given (+ management)
      https://streamable.com/in594c

I take back what I said about 84', the very dangerous contact was as a result of Mount making an uncontrolled kick at the ball, and not an inevitable accident.

    3. 82' is a great example of why IFAB's recent change to Law 12, that prevents referees from cautioning players for SPA if they play advantage, was a terrible change that goes against the spirit of the game. Arsenal are effectively penalized for continuing to play on, when the defender should absolutely deserve a yellow card for interfering with a promising attack. (It is borderline careless/reckless, so Moss could have given it anyways, too, but this one is squarely the IFAB's fault if you ask me).

84' Probably more red than yellow for me, but not enough for a review. The knee bends upon contact, and Mount doesn't drive through with his leg, he pulls away right after the start of the contact. These are mitigating factors that would support a no-red-card decision.

90' I was completely fooled by this from the broadcast angle, but the angle from behind clearly shows that Saka was holding the defender, not the other way around. Definitely should have been reviewed.

Also, can we imagine such a referee with Moss's style refereeing in any other high-level professional league besides the PL? The whole clip of the penalty incident, he is walking the entire time. And I get that the aloof, ultra-calm (almost bored-looking) style is quintessentially English, but it still surprises me how this style of refereeing can survive in perhaps the best domestic league in the world. It really feels like PL refereeing is 30+ years in the past sometimes...

      Delete
    4. After watching replays, incident on 84' is still RC for me. And I also don't like the management after penalty given. He could easily prevented confrontations, but didn't take any action for a while. I was never a person, who likes to critisize referees, and I have nothing against Moss, but this desisions are just unacceptable for this high level.
And also interesting topic, agree with smala017, we don't so many examples in other leagues, when referees continue their career after age of 50, it's really rare nowadays.

      Delete
    5. 32' - Looks to me like the classic situation of a player realising he's lost the ball and just tries to get a freekick. I don't see any contact; well seen by Moss.

82' - Smala017 explained it very well, fully agree.

84' - RC for me. Mount clearly wanted to kick the ball but has no control at all, misses the ball completely and only hits the opponent.

90' - I wouldn't blame Moss too much as it looks like a penalty from his view and the main camera angle as well BUT no VAR intervention from Darren England is unacceptable for me. Never a penalty as Saka is clearly holding Azpilicueta.

      Delete
    6. I agree with the others here saying that the penalty decision is not Moss's fault; anyone watching from in front would have the same impression. But the view from behind shows that the holding is clearly done by Saka, so the lack of a review is unfortunate.

      Delete
  6. I'm an Arsenal fan and did think the pen on looking on review was harsh and it was 50/50 although it is about time we did get a decision as we clearly haven't had much go for us on var this season

    ReplyDelete
  7. I've seen worse 'fouls' getting overturned. Is VAR in the game to have good decisions for the team you support or to actually have fair refereeing and remove such ridiculous mistakes

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fair referring of course but there has been some absolute shocking decisions been given against us this season that should have been given and some shocking red cards we shouldn’t of had as well

  8. OT: Vincic has a game on Sunday, so we can exclude him for the CL game on Tuesday.

I think it will be Makkelie in Manchester, unless Orsato makes a surprise rentree :)

    1. OT2:
In addition, yesterday I had a discussion with a Dutch friend (I temporarily live in the Netherlands for work)

He stated that – in his view - the chances for Makkelie reaching the CL final are very small, because Bjorn Kuipers just had the Euro final. In his view, that reduces the chances for another Dutch in a big final.

      What do you guys think?

      Delete
    2. That would be political bullocks. It should be about quality and the best performing referee who deserves the final, despite what happened during a tournament a year ago.

      Delete
    3. We know how this works. UEFA breaths politics.

France and Poland didn't have a referee in a "grand final" for a long time.

    1. It would be a ridiculous choice.

Makkelie deserves it based on over-all experience and handling the most complicated matches (involving PSG and Atletico).

      Delete
    2. Marciniak he deserves it final, Turpin absolutely not.

      Delete
  10. Turpin is behind Makkelie and Marciniak for CL final, no doubt about that.
    That said :
    - he has already officiated an important 2nd leg in CL QF : Roma - Barcelona a few years ago
    - he has two EL SF experience, including Atletico - Arsenal, quite a heated game.

And, I would be confused if he does not get a CL SF this year. This would for me be a reconsideration of his place among top Elite

About Euro 2020, he was disappointing and we can all agree about that. WC 2018... it is a bit unfair to say he didn't each KO stage. It was his first WC, we were unsure about his seat as main referee and he got two games, correctly handed. 2022 is probably the time for something bigger.

    3. I subscribe the argument that a CL final referee should have a SF experience in CL, Euro or at the World cup.

A referee MUST be tested in a very significant, high-profile Knock-Out game (preferably a SF or otherwise a QF return), either in CL, EURO... The tension is way bigger at those tournaments. The whole world is watching, the referee is under a magnifying glass.

    4. @Rob_81

I clearly agree, just wanted to bring some nuance about Turpin.
Not enough but still something :)

  11. It seems that Makkelie is appointed to the Semi-final match next Tuesday in Manchester. In domestic league, he has a game on Friday and I don't see any other options for MCI-RMA. Marciniak and Turpin recently officiated Real Madrid. Maybe one of them (or Vincic) will get the 2nd leg if Orsato is still injured.

I'm not sure what a Semi-final appointment would mean for Makkelie's CL final chances.

-If Orsato is OUT, the committee is forced to appoint all the big names in Semi-final (Makkelie, Turpin, Marciniak), also considering what happened with Siebert in the QF. With that in mind, committee should not take any risks in Semi finals.
-On the other hand, if Orsato is recovered ON TIME for a 2nd leg, the committee can decide to "save" Marciniak/Turpin for the final in Paris.

It all depends on Orsato's condition. Any news?

  12. As expected, Alejandro Hernández Hernández has been appointed for the Betis-Valencia Copa del Rey final on Saturday, first one for him. Full appointment:

    Referee: Alejandro Hernández Hernández
    AR1: José Enrique Naranjo Pérez
    AR2: Raúl Cabañero Martínez
    FO: César Soto Grado
    VAR: Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea
AVAR1: Roberto Díaz Pérez del Palomar
    AVAR2: Pablo González Fuertes

    1. Very expected all appointments, Soto as FO (being his first FIFA year and as an award for his good year), and Ricardo as VAR, as he probably is the next one in the list to handle the Final next year or the year after (if final is not given as a last match to Mateu o DcG, before retirement).

  13. I hate political choices, however if politics 'prevail', it will be Marciniak in the CL final.

The Polish didn't have a referee in a final since 2018 (Supercup).

The French are hosting the CL final and recently had Frappart (Supercup 2019) and Turpin (EL final 2021).

Marciniak's 2nd leg in the quarter finals screams FINAL test to me.

    2. Inter - Roma Sozza
      Lazio - Milan Guida
WOW, big big game for Sozza, this must be watched!
Orsato still out, will work again as VAR in Lazio - Milan with Guida referee, his assistant referee Giallatini and Preti are with a young referee in a not important game.
I think it is a very serious injury for him.

      Delete
    3. Thanks. Great game for Sozza! He is the one to watch

I feel sorry for Orsato. Hopefully they can prepare him for a second tie.

At the same time, I also feel bad for Hategan. I think, due to the limited options, this was his easily his moment to get a semi-final CL this year.

      Delete
  15. Oh, please. A lot of crying on this fan-blog. Based on this blog he's the only possible person for the final, all other options are dirty politics. Come on. What about his catastrophic performance in Europa league final where he totally lost control? Or his shocking penalty in Euro semi-final? Or play-on decision after a foul on a goalkeeper that caused Real to advance and PSG to fell out?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ahaha, funny how you describe the three performances and assess them. All of them I assess differently.
      Europa League final was a very good performance (where one can debate about the dealing with dissents though);
      the penalty in EURO semi’s was a soft one, but totally understandable taken position and viewing angle into account (and deemed not worthy of intervention by committee);
play-on decision in Madrid was simply a correct decision for me (mistake was at Donnarumma’s side).

It’s all just a matter of perspective but from my point of view this year’s CL final should go to Makkelie if we consider performances. When given to somebody else I wouldn’t automatically say “dirty politics” are played, but at least other aspects than meritocracy are involved.

      Delete
    2. My opinion:
-Europa League final was a great performance, managing 22 hot heads and all KMI's were good
-Penalty ENG-DEN: a bad call. I didn't like it. Too soft
-RMA-PSG: never a foul on Donnarumma

      Delete
    3. Please mind that Lahoz (FRA-POR) and Turpin (DEN-RUS) got send home immediately after equally soft penalty calls in group stage. Maybe it wasn't worth an intervention, but it was certainly a very bad call that would have ended Makkelies tournament run if it happened earlier.

      Delete
    4. I agree Kaer. Makkelie would be sent home if that soft penalty was awarded early in the tournament.

It is also worth mentioning that Makkelie didn’t award one SOFT penalty this entire season (definitely learned from it), whereas Turpin awarded a few soft ones. At least in my memory. I don’t know about Marciniak since I don’t watch Polish league.

    5. @ Anonymous 11:41

If you have the opinion that Makkelie lost control in his EL final, then I advise you to re-watch, for example, Porto-Atletico (Turpin) or Atletico-Man City (Siebert).

And after re-watching those games, I advise you to re-watch some games of Makkelie or Marciniak when they officiated Atletico Madrid.

  16. On topic:

Maybe interesting to discuss what we perceive as a “sonorous” game, and what is not…?
I assume, that is a very subjective thing :D

    For me, a sonorous game:
    - is played as part of the biggest tournaments, when the interests are the biggest, the games that have most viewers, etc. For me: Champions League, EURO cup and World Cup.
    - is played in knock-out stages / do-or-die games
    - involves two of the biggest names in nowadays football (based on history, fan-base, budget). In my opinion Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus.

Based on my view, let’s have a look at their experience.

    Marciniak:

-Real Madrid – Atletico (Supercup final)
-PSG – Barcelona (R16 first leg)
-Juventus – Barcelona (QF first leg)
-Tottenham – Juventus (R16 second leg). Big game at Wembley stadium
-Atletico – Liverpool (R16 first leg). Complicated game, I’d say. Atletico never easy
-Inter – Liverpool (R16 first leg): big game
-Real Madrid – Chelsea (QF return leg): intense game + 30 min extra time.

    *Worth mentioning:
    -R16 at EURO 2016

    Makkelie:

-Liverpool – Atletico (R16 second leg). Tough game
-Real Madrid – Chelsea (semi final CL – first leg).
-Real Madrid – PSG (R16 second leg). Very tough one
-Germany – England (R16 Euro 2020). Big game at Wembley
-England – Denmark (SF Euro 2020). Big game at Wembley but certainly not his best performance

    *Worth mentioning:
-The opening game at Euro 2020 (big responsibility)
-The Europa League final 2020 between Inter and Sevilla - probably one of the most challenging finals of the last years.
-He is often paired with "potentially problematic" teams/players, hot atmospheres, hot potatoes.

    Turpin:

-Chelsea – Bayern (R16 first leg)
-Chelsea – Real Madrid (R16 first leg)

    *Worth mentioning:
-Porto – Atletico: this was actually a group stage game, but a very complicated one.
-Europa League final – although it didn’t involve two of the biggest names
All his other games do not really “stand out” for me. It is also particular that Turpin is often with Nordic teams that are well-known for their good behaviours / focused on playing football.

Based on experience, Marciniak has a good chance to get the CL final.

Feel free to share your view or correct me on some points :)

    1. Wow, Marciniak has a big list! He is a Final candidate for sure.

Makkelie is slightly ahead of Turpin. No doubt. If Turpin is appointed to the CL final over Marciniak and Makkelie, I tend to agree this it a political choice.

    2. For CL final, we can also consider Anthony Taylor (2 Spanish teams) or Carlos DCG (2 English teams) :)

  20. Off topic but Craig Pawson has been appointed to FA Cup Final.
Chelsea V Liverpool (14th May) full appointments:
    Ref: Craig Pawson
AR: Dan Cook, Eddie Smart (Reserve: Dan Robathan)
    4th: David Coote
VAR: Paul Tierney, AVAR: Simon Bennett

Not a surprising appointment and Pawson can be happy with his season (he also has Arsenal v Man United on Saturday). It also seems that the rule of only 1 FA Cup Final per referee is back in force after 2 years of Taylor/Oliver receiving their 2nd finals due to empty stadiums - if the rule wasn't back we might have seen Mike Dean get his 2nd final as a farewell.

Good luck to the whole team.

  26. I don`t think the fact that Kuipers had the EURO final last summer is a valid reason for Makkelie not to get the UCL final this season. My main argument for this statement is that it seems like Rosetti "prepared" Makkelie for the final, otherwise the appointment in Tiraspol for example would not have made sense. Or, we would have seen him in QF. I mean, UEFA has not suddenly realised in the middle of the KO stage that Makkelie is Dutch. No, he was chosen for the final and still should get it.
So, I would like to see Turpin, Marciniak (they will get a game 100% in my scenario), Kovacs (why not, as long as he handled successfully City-Atletico) and Vincic (I still think his performance in Manchester was horrible but I don`t see any other options as long as Orsato is unavailable. Cakir is unlikely to be one, maybe only Dias, as a reward for the good game he had, hard to say, but is also unlikely for me. Let`s hope Orsato will be back in time.)

    2. I think Orsato was planned. But since he seems seriously injured i think Rosetti will opt for a 2016 scenario in which Makkelie gets both a SF and the final. With Taylor maybe as stand by in case of a Madrid Villareal final. Ricky, but i think given the lack of options that this is how it is gonna work out

    ReplyDelete
  30. If Turpin, Marciniak and Vincic all have a game on Sunday, I think there is only two options for the game on Tuesday (MCI - RMA).

First one is Orsato. The fact that he is not appointed in Serie A for a few weeks is worrying, however we can't exclude the option of this being preventive because of a small injury and Rocchi being very cautious with him, given the limited options of Rosetti.

If the injury is more serious, we can expect Makkelie in Manchester. Maybe Orsato to be recovered for a 2nd leg. If not, I pretty much think that Turpin and Marciniak will get a SF as well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Frappart in charge of Coupe the France?

This can be a clue that Clement Turpin will handle the second leg on 4 May (Real - Man. City). This return tie requires a big name !

  32. Maybe Monzul for Olympique-PSG? It would be great appointment

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is quite risky to rush him into a CL Semifinal so quickly, but at the same time:

    A) He is Cuneyt Cakir.

    B) There is an availability crisis at the moment. If there were other names that could fill in, perhaps it's not worth the risk. But given the lack of options, this may be UEFA's best choice.
