  1. So now I expect Siebert to officiate Atletico Madrid - Man City and maybe Orsato preserved for a semifinal...

  2. Vincic in such a big game with favourites behind 🤔 hes an awful referee too

    1. Yes, it's so posible, Marciniak is one of the best referees in europe (my opinion)

  5. Do you think this is a penalty? Yesterday, Van Boekel gave Ajax a penalty for this. In the Netherlands, there is lot of discussion and IMO it's really, really soft.

    1. I would rather swap the referees since the winner of LIV - BEN could face Bayern München in the semi-final. It wouldn't be a wise decision to let Siebert handle that game when there are (simple) other options.

  7. Why would anyone think that a referee at this level would influence a match just so a team from their country gets "easier" opposition? Ridiculous
Put the best referees on the games!

  8. Definitely an excellent path for Marciniak, after Conference League game now this one in a short time. Could be maybe easier after first leg score, but CL history tells us that this can be never said.
Vincic with Rosetti is another confirmation of his extremely high reputation.
Both these referees are candidates for EL final this season, after Hategan health issues, they are first choices.

    1. Why are we ruling out Taylor from a Europa League Final!! With his status now and very well not getting the UCL final he is for me number 1 for Europa league.

      Delete
  9. Vincic and Marciniak. Could we say that whoever has the better game, gets the EL final? :D And Makkelie (maybe Turpin) gets the CL final.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think Vincic has a poor performance in his last UCL game. Not sure if he deserve this game, probably not. But as long as Marciniak remained the only candidate I agree that we need some kind of "competition". Don't exclude Anthony Taylor though.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Vincic was expected in Munich. Marciniak in Madrid is a good appointment but seems a bit weird that he had a match in UECL only last week. What do you think is the reason for that? Was one appointment a replacement or is this just a concequence of UEFA's very narrow pool of trusted officials?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Didn't someone mention that Hategan should have handled CHELSEA-REAL last week? Maybe UEFA swapped Clément Turpin from second- to first-leg appointment and now had to select a replacement for the Frenchman.

  12. Again, Joey Kooy shows why he is not capable enough to be an official at this level. Doesn't send ref Manschot to the screen, while this is a crystal clear RC.

    1. Supportable caution IMO as the tackle is low and contact on the foot. In Uefa competitions YC is the appropriate decision, probably RC would be even perceived as wrong. In Dutch domestic league of course I don’t know.

  13. OT: for 2nd Man City goal at about 36', a minute or two before, there was an offside call, but the ball had already gone to the Liverpool defender near his goalkeeper with no players around. Liverpool takes the kick for the offside call and sends it right to a Man City player and are never able to get it out of their end after that, with Man City scoring a minute or two later. So the offside should never have been called, as the advantage was to have the ball without any defensive pressure, rather than letting the defense get set up during the kick for the offside call. Small mistake but game changing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Just saw a replay of first Man City goal. After a Liverpool foul, Man City takes a quick kick, which is fine, but the spot of the ball seems to be about 3 to 4 yards away from the spot of the foul, towards the Man City goal, though the direction doesn't matter. The spot of the ball should have been closer to the foul or the kick retaken.

  15. The latest situation in Turkey

3 decisions from yesterday's match in Turkish Super League.

1.) Offside situation.  There was no intervention, the goal was awarded.  At the 1.44 minute of the clip, the attacker's contact appears.

    https://streamable.com/03us6x

     2) 2nd yellow card application.  Is it enough for a 2nd yellow card?

    https://streamable.com/in1pma

     3) player's dissent and red card after an incorrect foul decision

    https://streamable.com/iapsvi

The green team is at the forefront of the clubs supporting the referee operation.  Unfortunately, all decisions are in favor of this team.

Unfortunately, these things are happening in Turkey recently.

    6. IMO
      82': clear red card
      85: SYC

      Delete
    7. 82': IMO no VAR intervention required, because the main impact was on the foot and the leg not fully stretched, but borderline to a clear RC
85': Tricky, because Thiago was fouled first (as Taylor well detected), so one could argue that he was only late due to that foul and would have reached the ball otherwise. However, the tackle itself seems reckless independent from the foul on Thiago, therefore a YC would be at least the better decision IMO.

In general, Taylor was well accepted by the players and faced not much dissent by them (and by the two coaches).
I don't think, he will be a talking point after the game, so the general picture probably is quite positive - in spite of some aspects, that have been mentioned here.

    2. Maybe replacement.

    3. I hate these political choices. This is obviously compensation for KNVB as the other (higher rated) Dutch ref doesn't have a CL-game.

    4. why Gozubuyuk? Shocked and confused...

    5. Cakir? Maybe Hategen with Kovacs originally being on this game?

    6. As a Dutchman I have to say that im shocked to read Gozubuyuks name. But at the same time it confirms the favoritism of 2 countries in particular. NL and Italy. I think we can draw a conclusion on the question why no Makkelie as well. He is safed for Paris IMO

      Delete
  21. Any theories on why Orsato and Makkelie didn´t get a game at all, while Vincic and Marciniak got 3 KO games up till now? I think it's not a sign of very solid management.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, they are protecting them for SF (Orsato) and Final (Makkelie).
      In this competition:
      Orsato got R16 1st leg: PSG-RMA
      Makkelie got R16 2nd leg: RMA-PSG
      Vincic, Marciniak 3 KO games
      Turpin 2 KO games
Taylor just 1 KO games but he was in charge for WC Qualifiers Final, and so many English teams make him difficult to appoint :)

      Delete
    2. I think Orsato is injured, if not appointed tomorrow, you can be sure about that. Let's wait for Makkelie next assignment as well.

      Delete
  22. I have never see Gozubuyuk on the pitch, let’s see if he deserve this QF or not.
Really hard game for Siebert, this is his chance to prove he’s a A++ referee.

As expected, Makkelie and Orsato did not receive any QF game.
The Dutch clearly saved for the final, the Italian saved for a high-profile 2nd leg Semi-Final, for the other three refs we can predict Turpin, Marciniak, then Taylor/Lahoz (or both, depending on Spanish and English teams), and/or Siebert if he manages well this game.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they won't use Marciniak there, because my prediction would be he will be saved for the UEL final. Vincic and Siebert might be strong contenders for UECL final

      Delete
    2. The issue being Taylor and Lahoz/Siebert could be out. If there is only one spanish team in the SF would they really give Lahoz the other tie?

I think Orsato for the second leg of one SF and Turpin, Marciniak and Siebert. someone else. Makkelie for the final

      Delete
    3. Why not? In case of LIV - BAY Lahoz would be possible.
They did it in CL 18/19 when Mateu Lahoz officiated Ajax-Tottenham, SF first leg. The other SF was Barcelona-Liverpool.

      Delete
  23. Vincic and Marciniak are in Qatar (whatever happens in this games)

    (My opinion)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why is Carlos DCG not appointed to one of the QF’s in UCL, UEL or UECL.
    Anybody an idea?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Del Cerro Grande might get an Europa League Semifinal and the Final of the Conference League?

Other predictions: Final of the Champions League: Makkelie / Europa League Final: Marciniak

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes it is possible to see Del Cerro at first in EL semifinal and then ECL final. He is indeed in my opinion a candidate for ECL final, as "closing honor" for his UEFA career, despite of some controversial performances. Then the last hope for him is WC, still difficult to say something about that at moment.

  26. Correct first yellow card (min. 9´) by Marciniak in Real-Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 3' Bayern-Villareal: any explanation why UEFA expects the referees to whistle delayed offside after the goalkeeper secured the ball instead of applying advantage? Seems quite inconvenient to me since it's both denying an advantage and taking flow out of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Very difficult management of Lewandowski by Vincic... the Polish is lucky!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. Should have been the second YC for Lewandowski.

      Delete
  29. About 41', hard and obvious foul on Loftus-Cheeks by Vini Jr. not called, and at about 38', possible YC not called. Doesn't bode well for second half.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't agree regarding 41'. IMO at least supportable to play on, because the attacker is leaning in and looking for the contact.

A YC for the 38' is not mandatory as an isolated incident, but would have been better for balance given the YC for Benzema shortly before, that was a bit harsh IMO.

      Delete
    2. IMO GOOD PLAY ON IN 41'

      Delete
    3. I should rescind the word "hard," but it looked like Vini Jr. stuck his arm out across Loftus-Cheeks's body to stop him, thus bringing him down and almost injuring him.

      Delete
    4. 38' incident was a completely careless tackle IMO. Not worthy of YC in any context. He knew that Real Madrid would ask for it and anticipated the protests

And I agree with Philipp, play on in 41' was at least supportable.

    Weak performance.

    ReplyDelete
  35. in my opinion, very good first part of marciniak, if he continues like this, we will surely see him in one of the 3 finals

  36. OT: if, according to the article at https://www.dailysabah.com/sports/football/13-high-profile-turkish-referees-stripped-off-super-lig-duties, Cakir will really make $500,000 per season in the Saudi league, I don't think he can feel that bad, once his wounded pride heals.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I didn't see Vincic's first half complete, but the minutes I did see it was costing him the game. bad for him

    ReplyDelete

    1. Taken the first half I think this game ist one size too big for Vincic.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you, it was better for Makkelie.

Makkelie would have been better in this match and Vincic in Makkelie's, simple as that.

      Delete
    3. Yet another too big game for Vincic after last years EC quarterfinal Italy-Belgium.

      Delete
  38. I think Marciniak just missed a clear penalty for Chelsea in 47'. It was a clear trip by Casemiro. Maybe it was offside before but if not, penalty.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with that, but think, it was rather offside.
Hopefully, VAR at least checked in detail.

      Delete
  39. Wrong corner kick before 0-2, that's not good but VAR can't do anything there.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Unlucky I think. Originally looked like a corner until you see the super slow mo close up.

      Delete
    2. Big mistake from Marciniak, the UEL final will be difficult for him now, especially if Chelsea returns, Madrid management will give him a headache

      Delete
    3. It is not a "big mistake", wrong corner kicks happen all the time. The outcome of the play (which is determined by the players) should not change how the mistake reflects upon the referee.

      Delete
  40. 49' corner called when it was a goal kick and Chelsea score a minute later. VAR should really be opened up for out of bounds reviews like it is used in basketball.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Starts to get like a video ref is running the whole game then don’t you think? Would take forever. And what if he gives a goal kick and it was a corner…just feel like it would penalise the attackers a lot more and stop more goals.

      Delete
    2. Well, remember there was no goal line technology until I think Lampard's goal against Germany wasn't called in the World Cup. It will just take one mistake like Marciniak's in a huge game to sway the tide and make everyone call for wider VAR usage. After all, if everyone watching the video of the match can see a mistake but the referee can't see it, shouldn't that technology be put to good use to correct the error? But I see your point about it slowing down the game.

      Delete
    3. I’m a huge fan of VAR in general, but personally I wouldn’t want it opening to these. You need a limit otherwise it will just go overboard I believe - in England we already don’t like VAR that much so it wouldn’t be widely accepted here!!

      Delete
  41. Oh marciniak! Was it a corner kick for Chelsea? (consequence: 0-2)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unfortunately it’s wasn’t a corner kick. Normally not a big issue, only now it lead to the equaliser. Before this corner Marciniak whistled an attacking foul, but looking closely to this incident it was the defender who tripped the attacker avoiding him playing the ball. Remarkable that VAR stayed silence.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wrong corner kicks in modern football are a big issue, if you ask me. We have VAR, introduced for avoiding clear and obvious mistakes, and mostly objective ones. This is almost the only kind of mistake that can't be corrected by VAR, but at the same time you have clear proof that it is a 100& mistake. I don't know if it will be possible to do something, because I mostly agree with Ben @22:11, if we start with such analysis, a game would never end and many small decisions should be changed. Really don't know what to add, but in nowadays football, considering the interests of big teams, such mistakes stay as unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At least wrong yellow(-red) cards and wrong free kicks in proximity of the box have significantly more impact on the game than wrong corner kicks. If you add all of those to the VAR-checklist, you are close to NFL where basically every play is reviewed...

      Delete
    2. A wrong corner is a mistake by the referee. But in my opinion the bigger mistake is done by the defenders if a corner kick leads to a goal! The defending team still having any possibilities to avoid a Goal. That is different to the situations where the var is allowed to do sth f.e a penalty

      Delete
    3. I agree with JD, a wrong corner kick is not a serious mistake on Marciniak's part, and certainly not something VAR should be involved with.

Corner kicks have roughly a 3% chance of resulting in a goal. Yes, it is a mistake worth ".03 expected goals" when a referee gives a wrong corner kick. But really, that is not a big mistake! The fact that a team happened to score on that one in particular does not change what the mistake was; a referee shouldn't be judged based upon the outcome of the play determined by the players on the field, he should be judged on the basis of the mistake itself. Which is, again, not a very big mistake. These complaints always seem ridiculous to me, especially when coming from referees like ourselves.

      Delete
  44. Because Marciniak whistled the foul VAR should correct it into the correct outcome: penalty. If he would have played on, VAR could support play on, even when it’s more penalty than play on.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now intervention by VAR, handball before scoring a goal.
This avoided an analysis about possible active offside when Chelsea scored.

    ReplyDelete
  46. For me, good for the VAR. Chelsea goal correctly disallowed

  47. Different attitude by players towards referee in Real - PSG Makkelie versus Real - Chelsea Marciniak. Interesting to see the difference. Great match to watch by the way!

  49. 2nd missed SYC for Lewandowski

    ReplyDelete
  50. But I have the impression that there are more complaints tonight comparing to the previous match. Perhaps because Marciniak whistles more free kicks which create more reaction.

    1. Ach Florian ...

    2. Could very well be that the CL season for the Spanish refs is over ...

      Delete
    3. The pool is very short without Spanish and English referees available.

UEFA has been terribly unlucky this season with referees missing for issues not related to performance principle (Hategan recovering from a heart attack, Karasev 'sanctioned' due to Russian invasion from Ukraine, Çakir unfairly removed by Turkish federation)

    4. It is fore sure, isn't it? Semi finals sre no longer possible and they have absolutely no candidate for the final (and two spaniards in a row are also not going to happen in any case!). DCG has chances for a ECL final, I think, but his form is not convincing.

  61. Guys, do you think that with the performances of Szymon and Slavko in UCL, you have already earned your place in Qatar?

And if yes, how far do you see them go?

  62. With English and Spanish teams in semifinals, the worst scenario for committee, indeed. I think quite sure to see Turpin and Orsato (the latter if back from injury), then I would say that another appointment for Marciniak before EL final would be possible, but in normal conditions he would go directly to handle it. And maybe the fourth name will be selected between Siebert and Vincic. Committee has been forced to appoint always the same referees, despite of a very large pool of Elite, but we already knew this situation, I just wish in future it will be always different. Having said that, you easily understand who is CL final candidate for me, it looks clear after last assignment...

    1. I would dare to say that Real Madrid- Villareal can be assigned to Taylor, especially the first leg. Then if Manchester City will pass, a spanish (Mateu ?) can be used for the other semifinal, leaving Orsato and one between Makkelie and Turpin for the return leg. Yeah not the best scenario; it would be better to rile out in a SF referees coming for same country of involved team , but I guess it's time to overpass such pre-concept and grant the experience and the knowledge of two top levels like as Taylor and Mateu. All in all I agree on the fact that they are always some names.........
Siebert, Kovacs and Oliver can be appointed for UEL SF

    2. The semi-finals are Liverpool - Villarreal and Real - City / Atlético. Taylor could indeed be used in the Madrid Derby (if City will be out), but if City are through all Spanish and English refs are out for sure.

    3. It is even possible that one very trusted referee will handle two semi's, like Cakir once did. Not my preferred option for sure.

  63. Does anybody subscribe to the argument that Vincic is the anticipated referee the Europa League final, and not Marciniak?

Some observations: Vincic has the advantage of being at the EURO, was the 4th official in EL final (2021), had a very important observer yesterday (CL QF). And last but not least (hate to say it…) he’s Slovenian.
Some people will say, he had a bad game in Manchester (R16), but the same applies to Marciniak in Turin.

Marciniak did the Supercup final in August 2018. Referees that have a triple (Supercup-EL-CL) are pretty ‘rare’. At least, in this century. I think, the normal path after the Supercup is a Semi-final CL and then, at some point, the CL final.

  64. OT: Saudi association judged that Jesús Gil Manzano and his VAR Hugo Miguel (POR) committed three clear refereeing mistakes in their handling of the important Al-Ittihad vs. Al-Nassr match in February this year.

    1. I don't think UEFA would want a VAR intervention for any of the scenes. Do you?

    2. Agreed. I'm not really convinced at all by the assigned VC-by-knee offence to be honest, but in other video released in last 24hrs, there was another such offence rated SAFF7 (-> red card), so I guess they have very clear ideas about this.

    Man City/Athletico vs Real Madrid

    Marciniak and Orsato
