I think Feyenoord - Slavia is going to be a (very) challenging game. I would expect a more experienced referee to handle it (see Marciniak appointed to Marseille - PAOK).
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Kružliak has offered good performances in AZ - Bodø/Glimt and Kazakhstan - Moldova and is therefore rewarded with UECL quarter-final.
I’m trying to understand Marciniak’s appointment in the conference league. It’s not a demotion, I think. He is a very experienced referee and is having an excellent season (until the Atalante game) so far. If he was demoted, a game in Europa League would be more ‘logical’. Taylor and Siebert have been appointed to a game in Conference League, and after that, something bigger followed (WC play-off).
ReplyDeleteMy guess: Marciniak is saved for a CL Semi final OR we will see him next week again in a ‘high profile’ CL QF final game...
Is he appointed in domestic league next weekend? :)
The available referees for a return game in CL QF next week:
Delete-Siebert
-Vinčič
-Orsato
-Makkelie >> has a game on Sunday (10-April) in Eredivisie.
Doubt:
-Marciniak (a big game in QF or saved for SF?)
-A second Spanish ref to the Liverpool game (seems unlikely but I remember that we once had two Italian crews on the same game in 1st and 2nd leg).
Appointments for Polish Ekstraklasa are released on Thursdays unfortunately. :)
DeleteIn my opinion, it's keeping him save for one of the finals (most likely UEL).
I agree with Euro Soccer Ref. I think he is being saved for a CL SF and then the UEL Final.
DeleteTaylor has a bigger shout for Europa league Final than Marciniak in my opinion especially if the British teams go out in west ham and Rangers.
DeleteIf we look at the appointments of Turpin (2021) and Makkelie (2020), the UEL final referee was appointed a CL QF.
DeleteMy guess: Marciniak gets a QF CL or is saved for a CL semi final. Marciniak and Vincic are in competition for the UEL final.
The AA+ poule is super narrow. I don't think they will protect the UEL referee.:) Let's see.
Vincic has a match on Saturday, but either Klancnik or Kovacic (can't remember at the moment) is appointed on Sunday evening, so probably no CL on Tuesday.
DeleteTurpin is my prediction for UECL Final
DeleteMy prediction is Marciniak, god bless you
DeleteMixed choices but all are Elite referees.
ReplyDeleteMost important game for committee seems to be the one in Marseille, with Marciniak. I think this appointment could have been expected after Juventus - Villarreal, but in case of good game on Thursday, he could then be back in the major competition.
Just one point for discussion: without VAR he (like all the other referees assigned to ECL KO stage) has everything to lose.
After what happened in group stage, surely an interesting game for Gözübüyük, but I think now teams are in different form and the outcome can be different. Still, good path for the new Dutch Elite, regular assignments for him.
Umut Meler in Rotterdam a normal appointment, while for Kruzliak it is surely already very good to appear in this stage of a competition, considering his background, Rosetti is trying to stimulate him.
Chefreny czy myślisz, że Marciniak dostanie finał UEL?
DeleteYes it is possible, if he does well in Conference League.
DeleteIn my opinion, he could then get a Champions League semi-final and then after that EL final in case. The performance in Turin for Juventus - Villarreal should have been better, but the overall picture is still solid for him at moment.
OT: Huge crucial game in the EPL this weekend Man City - Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteRef: Anthony Taylor. ARS: Beswick, Nunn. 4th: Marriner.
VAR: Tierney, AVAR: Wood
To add to this, Michael Oliver is usually kept away from relegation battle games as he is a Newcastle fan and for the past years they are usually in this battle. However, they seem to be out and so he is appointed to Norwich - Burnley at the weekend, with Burt and Bennett of course. Huge week for both Taylor and Oliver in Europe then EPL. Good luck!
DeleteI hope this qunches the biggest myth in English refereeing where Oliver is seen as the National number to Taylor and vice versa in Europe. Taylor has always been ahead domestically and this stems from the domestic finals which are usually given to the most experienced and best referees at a certain point in time. Taylor got the league cup and FA cup final before Oliver and also got the Second FA cup final (becoming the first referee to do so) before Oliver. This season alone Taylor has officiated a lot of huge clashes more than Oliver. Just to put in context it’s at a ratio of 5:1 in favor of Taylor. Taylor is head and neck the number 1 referee in England both domestically and internationally, he is a certainty to go to the World Cup , Oliver just needs to bid his time!!! That being said he is certainly going to get the FA Cup Semi Final equivalent of this match.
DeleteChiagozie I wouldn't be surprised to see Atkinson, or even Dean (farewell game?) on the semi-final equivalent. However, it would of course be no shock to see Oliver there.
DeleteDean is getting the final as a fair well game and also had city in the previous round against Southampton while Atkinson had Liverpool in the League cup Semi Final which should not count against him because Oliver had the same albeit in the first leg but Atkinson generally hasn’t had a good season, Marriner stands a better chance.
DeleteI suppose it depends whether the FA have indeed relaxed the rule of only one FA cup final appointment allowed, or if Taylor and Oliver were only appointed twice because of Covid and empty stadiums. If it is relaxed then Dean will likely get it as a farewell game, if not then I'd predict Pawson
DeleteDisappointed that this tournament has turned out to be one where elites are parachuted in for the later parts of the competition. As i feared
ReplyDelete10.04.2022
ReplyDeleteSivasspor-Medipol Basaksehir: Halil Umut Meler
probably no game in second leg
OT:
ReplyDeleteRegarding the penalty whistled in yesterday's Bundesliga match FC Augsburg - FSV Mainz (discussed in a previous post), DFB published a statement:
In their opinion, penalty is a WRONG DECISION and a VAR INTERVENTION IS MANDATORY here:
"In this complex scene, which can be fully solved with the pictures, the VAR should have invited the referee to an OFR." Appearantly, they don't really see a 'tricky' incident here either, as an VAR intervention is "to be expected". For them, it's a collision (i. e. play-on) and penalty is a clear/obvious mistake.
https://www.tag24.de/sport/fussball/bundesliga/erste-bundesliga/dfb-zum-elfmeter-in-augsburg-video-assistent-haette-eingreifen-muessen-2404873
Absolutely agree - you cannot use the existance of a contact to justify any wrong decision because there is a kind of contact in almost all of the actions during the football game. It is a contact sport above all. That's why I think that VAR is used in a completely wrong way.
ReplyDeleteImportant mistake by Turkish refereeing team allowing a Prague goal after punishable offside (Fey-Pra). 43.
ReplyDeleteA huge offside missed in Slavia's goal.
ReplyDeleteNo offside
DeleteExcellent first half from Umut Meler, they want to put her under
ReplyDeleteI think you should be neutral no matter what country you are from.
Delete... and now a penalty missed for Feyenoord. A nightmare performance by the Turkish team.
ReplyDeleteI think your eyes are bad, there is no penalty, I think you should be neutral no matter what country you are from.
DeletePenalty would have been very soft but I agree about offside.
DeleteNo matter what country you are from! .... said a Turkish about a Turkish referee :-)
DeleteMaybe it's offside, but I don't think so and as you said, we can't understand it without VAR, I think it's a perfect first half.
DeleteI hope everyone is not seeing what you see Anonymous :-):-)
DeleteI only see what happens if a mediocre ref is pushed to the max... Given the current developments in Turkey this might be the last thing we Will see from Turkey for a long time. And to be fair that would be a great thing after seeing this performance which is Just below par unfortunately
DeleteClear offside not given and Slavia equalized. But I blame UEFA more than the refs, where is VAR???
ReplyDeleteClear offside, attacker on the line, impeding defender to make any action, AR should have had courage here, without VAR is difficult, but this was evident. A bit of intuition needed when you see such constellation by players.
ReplyDelete1) https://ibb.co/whWtGSR
Delete2) https://ibb.co/qYqw16Z
I agree, it might be offside, but without VAR it's hard, not an obvious mistake
DeleteC’mon Turkish ref. Be realistic. This is a obvious foul. These are the crucial situations as an AR you’re being trained for. Don’t get the escape of no VAR presence. AR2 had to spot this one. Crucial mistake unfortunately for him.
DeleteIt is a clear offside and it is an obvious mistake. Unfortunately :(((
DeleteIt is very close to goal line so easy to detect.
Let's say again that in this competition without VAR until semifinals... it is definitely not a good thing, looks like a very old football.
ReplyDeleteOk it might look like old days football. But it is never an excuse for a ref or AR to miss sonething, or for us as readers on this blog to excuse a ref or AR. They still first need to spot it them selves.
DeleteSo will VAR be used in UECL semi-finals? I thought only in the final match.
DeleteRosetti can be satisfied with Umut Meler.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha dont make me laugh. At least one decisive crucial mistake from the AR. Below the required level for me
DeleteAnonymous, Dutch or Feyenoord, I think every referee can make a mistake, I think it was good. If everyone thinks the same about offside, I think wrong, but apart from that, there is no penalty or anything else.
DeleteThe offside mistake can be decisive, end of European season for Meler.
DeleteYes, it could be the end of the season.
Deletea second leg then the European season could be over
DeleteWell, as new Elite referee I think that this was the expected last game, definitely too early for him for a Conference League semifinal.
Deleteumut meler can act as the fourth official in the semifinals.
DeleteQuiet match for Kruzliak so far. It does not look like he was out for a long time. Was his domestic suspension cancelled or reduced?
ReplyDeleteClear penalty missed by Kruzliak
ReplyDeleteAre you joking? Never a penalty
DeleteClip
Deletehttps://twitter.com/siekobos/status/1512162108628250624?t=JtrG8cp6JeVqnXi_dQUrig&s=19
I also tend to deem it a penalty in fa or of Eindhoven. Maybe Chefren could provide a clip (LEI-PSV 52’)?
DeleteLooks like a very clear penalty, given the action by defender, in such situations whistle is always expected!
DeleteClear penalty IMO
DeleteNo penalty, never only in a Village game
DeleteMy god. How can you say no penalty? Missed the ball and then clear contact (tripping).
DeleteRC card missed by Marciniak. Violent conduct, kicking his opponent with force and without playing the ball. Not even a YC given…
ReplyDeleteRC is exaggerated, Payet was too late and kicked his opponent recklessly. Clear YC missed.
DeleteExtremely hot end of the game in Marseille, all players and benches very agitated, committee was right in making a certain choice (Top Elite) for this game, I think it will be the same for return game in Greece.
ReplyDeleteChefren
DeleteOverall Marciniak was good in this match? Unfortunetly I didin't watch this match. It's posible EL final for him?
Chefreny, jak Marciniak wypadł w tym meczu?
DeletePredictions EL UECL
ReplyDeleteAtalanta-Leipzig: Vincic
Barcelona-Frankfurt: Kovacs
Lyon-Westham: Lahoz
Rangers: Braga: Siebert
Slavia-Feyenoord: Del Cerro Grande
Psv-Leicester: Sandro Schaerer
As Roma-Bodo/Glimt: Micheal Oliver
Poak-Marseille: Danny Makkelie
Oliver totally unsuitable for Roma-Bodo. There have been fights with police between the two teams in the locker room after final whistle. It will be a super heated match. I expect someone expert like Lahoz or Turpin.
DeleteNot Turpin either. Either Taylor or Makkelie for me
DeleteSiebert will officiate a CL QF
DeleteKtoś oglądał mecz w Marsylii? Jak poradził sobie Marciniak?
ReplyDeleteRosetti can be satisfied with all referees in UECL QF.
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch full game of Marciniak, so I can't answer to your questions, I just watched some of the very last minutes.
ReplyDeleteI think this should be the incident mentioned by some readers (no replays):
https://streamable.com/eap2p4
It looks like a clear deliberate kick on opponent, at least YC missed, strictly to LotG, RC.
Another clip, second YC for SPA and management of the other players with further cards:
Deletehttps://streamable.com/wfbzr4
At the end of the video, you can also see the first YC to the player sent off (kick in face). All correct decisions.
Thank you so much
DeleteFrom first glance it looks deliberate but we need a better reply/slowmotion to be 100% sure.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Kruzliak whistled a good game but missing the penalty ´52 the rating cannot be excellent imo. VAR missing can be an excuse but not in this situation where Kruzliak had a good view of the situation
ReplyDeleteLeicester - PSV, penalty appeal:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/rtwvt5
Very clear penalty if you ask me.
What it is worrying, is that referee doesn't have any reaction, in such incidents a reaction is absolutely expected, either whistle or play on gesture. I can't see a referee that doesn't make anything after that...
Clear penalty, IMO.
DeleteYes, very clear IMO too. A big mistake by Kruzliak.
DeleteGuys, did you checked if it was in or out???? It was not so clear, for me free kick...
DeleteAny Predictions for second leg?
ReplyDeleteMy predictions for next week (VAR in brackets)
ReplyDeleteBayern-Villareal: Vincic (Tierney)
Real-Chelsea: Siebert (Dankert)
Atletico-ManCity: Makkelie (van Boekel)
Liverpool-Benfica: Orsato (Valeri)
Atalanta-Leipzig: Mateu (Martinez)
Barcelona-Frankfurt: Letexier (Brisard)
Lyon-West Ham: del Cerro Grande (Hernandez)
Rangers-Braga: Schärer (Fritz)
Roma-Bodo: Sanchez
Slavia-Feyenoord: Soares Dias
PAOK-Marseille: Grinfeeld
PSV-Leicester: Bastien
Well, I was working under the condition that no referee is used twice in the quarterfinals - which admittedly could be wrong as we have no experience regarding the Conference League.
DeleteBut with this condition, there are nearly no alternatives to these 12 names (+ Collum and Sidiropoulus), I think.
Then there are obviously other permutations possible, but I don't think one can really appoint much better referees for the two games you are mentioning without losing neccessary quality in the Europa League.
Then Grinfeeld is an EURO referee after all and Sanchez has done many difficult games in his domestic league.
And finally, the appointments probably were made before first leg events/results.
It's of a paramount importance that UEFA will appoint not only excellent, but in particular referees with a very strong personality for e.g. Atletico vs Man City, Lyon vs West Ham, Slavia vs Feyenoord, PAOK vs Marseille (!), PSV vs Leicester, ...
DeleteAgree with your list Jacques.
DeleteATM - MCI in the return game is a tricky one. In first leg, you could already see it almost boiling over at the end of the second halve. 2nd leg in Madrid will be more difficult. The referee and his team in charge are highly trusted for sure. I doubt if ANY referee would be glad to be appointed to this game? Joking. Great chance to display themselves.
Bayern-Villareal: Vincic
DeleteReal-Chelsea: Orsato
Atletico-Mancity: Marchinak
Liverpool-Benfica: Siebert
Leipzig-Atalanta: Turpin
Barcelona-Frankfurt: Kovacs
Lyon-Westham: Lahoz
Rangers-Braga: Meler
As Roma-Bodo/Glimt: Taylor
Slavia-Feyenoord: Del Cerro Grande
Psv-Leicester: Sandro Schaerer
Poak-Marseille: Danny Makkelie
Bayern-Villareal: Soares Dias (Pinhiero)
DeleteReal-Chelsea: Siebert (Dankert)
Atletico-ManCity: Makkelie (van Boekel)
Liverpool-Benfica: Orsato (Irrati)
Atalanta-Leipzig: Mateu (Martinez)
Barcelona-Frankfurt: Vinic (Di Bello)
Lyon-West Ham: Schärer (Fritz)

Roma-Bodo: Ayetkin
Slavia-Feyenoord: Grinfeeld or Siridupolous
PAOK-Marseille: Del Grande
PSV-Leicester: Bastien
Are there any house rules regarding making predictions? I wonder, since an admin expressed his displeasure a few days ago towards a reader who frequently posts predictions. In my opinion a bit rude, because I remember that making predictions was quite popular during the EURO, and still is. Probably among silent readers too.
ReplyDeleteSome readers apparantly have the opinion that it affects the blog's credibility. I can understand both. There ain't a separate page available?
People are dropping predictions everywhere. It can be a bit chaotic, sometimes.
DeleteI do find a bit strange - and I’m trying to write it very polite - that an admin confronts an user publicly about the content of its messages. Honestly this does not encourage readers to post messages with an User-account. Anonymous users can post off-topic messages every day without being addressed by an admin.
There are a few options: 1. adjust the house rules, 2. create a separate page for predictions, or 3. keep it like this and respect off-topic posts, even when a topic is completely out of the blue. Everybody’s welcome, right?
Still thinking about that Meler performance yesterday. Apart from the wrongful first goal by Slavia, I didn´t like has management. He didn´t seem to connect with players, card management was difficult, many very quick cards.
ReplyDeleteThen there´s Kruzliak. After his big error last year in Lille-Ajax, he made another big miss yesterday by not giving a penalty to PSV.
All in all, where was VAR? This is so unbelieveable. Two big match deciding errors by these two referees.
Marco23, show me evidence, that it was inside. Its very Easy to say mistake.
DeleteUmut Meler's appearance in Rotterdam will not affect his future.
DeleteCL QF predictions
ReplyDeleteBayern - Villarreal Orsato
Real Madrid Chelsea Vincic
Liverpool Benfica Makkelie
Atletico Madrid - Manchester City Siebert
Enrique Cáceres is the new head of CONMEBOL referees. He replaces Wilson Seneme who quit CONMEBOL "for personal reasons" and already has been chosen the new head of Brazilian referees.
ReplyDeleteI report the observers for 2nd, according to another referee blog. Not sure if it is a good source, tbh.
ReplyDeleteConference League
Roma - Bodo Garibian (FRA)
PSV - Leicester Batista (POR)
Slavia Praga - Feyenoord Filipovic (SRB)
PAOK - Marsiglia Jakov (ISR)
Europa League
Lione - West Ham Trentalange (ITA)
Barcellona - Francoforte Riley (ENG)
Rangers - Braga Tritsonis (GRE)
Atalanta - Lipsia Nalbandyan (ARM)
Champions League
Real Madrid - Chelsea Bianchi (SUI)
Bayern - Villarreal Šajn (SVN)
Liverpool - Benfica Velasco Carballo (ESP)
Atlético Madrid - City Rosetti (ITA)
So, if this is correct, no Orsato in ATL-CITY. My predictions:
DeleteReal Madrid-Chelsea: Orsato
Bayern-Villarreal: Makkelie
Liverpool-Benfica: Bastien
Atlético-City: Siebert
Makkelie has a game on Sunday
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteCould Chefren maybe confirm these observers?
DeleteNo, I can't do that.
DeleteHint: You can find the referee observer and UEFA delegates earlier in UEFA's API. All you need to know is the ID number of the match from UEFA's website.
DeleteFor example in Real Madrid-Chelsea, the report URL is: https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/match/2034659--real-madrid-vs-chelsea/
Therefore the ID number is "2034659", then just put it into the following link: https://match.uefa.com/v2/matches/2034659
There you can see Francesco Bianchi is the referee observer, and Peter Lundström is the UEFA delegate.
Thanks, SJ!
DeleteThen, we have the following names for now:
UCL
BAYVIL: Rosetti (ITA) / Šupraha (CRO)
RMACHE: Bianchi (SUI) / Lundström (FIN)
LIVBEN: Velasco Carballo (ESP) / Ubias (CZE)
ATMMCI: Šajn (SVN) / de Jong (NED)
UEL
ATARBL: Nalbandyan (ARM) / Zorzi (SUI)
BARFRA: Riley (ENG) / Cruise (IRL)
LYOWHU: Messina (ITA) / Stefański (POL)
RANBRA: Tritsónis (GRE) / Ryszka (POL)
UECL
ROMBOD: Garibian (FRA) / O'Connor (WAL)
SLPFEY: Filipović (SRB) / Jordania (GEO)
PAOKMAR: Jakov (ISR) / Struthers (SCO)
PSVLEI: Batista (POR) / Morais (POR)
I am sorry but I can't understand how some observers are appointed. Someone who has never whistled a GS match of a competition is appointed as an observer on a QF match.
DeleteTragic to say the least.
Ok, now I can confirm that the updated observers reported by Anonymous are the correct ones (as for now) :)
DeleteWhat is UEFA's API?
DeleteTrentalange recently faced a serious car crash, I guess he is still recovering and cannot be on duty in Lyon. Anyway if above observers are right we can say that Orsato will not referee AM-MCI, Vincic not BM-VILLA, Mateu or Del Certo not LIVE-BENFICA and Sharer not at Santiago Bernabeu 😀
ReplyDeleteWho is Sharer?
DeleteStieler makes his comeback in 1.Bundesliga today - so he would be available for a match next week.
ReplyDeleteSiebert has a 2. Bundesliga match today - so he is available on Tuesday.
From what I saw, Jon Moss had a very good performance in the quite important Everton vs. Manchester United game today! I think he should have awarded Everton a penalty for a tripping incident in the second half though.
ReplyDeleteA couple of clips:
77’ - potential penalty to Everton (tripping)
https://streamable.com/vyqlq7
+93’ - potential penalty to Manchester United (handling)
https://streamable.com/7cik9e
I Have a Question:
ReplyDeleteIn the cadiz-sevilla derby today, cadiz was quite a long time in front and they wasted a lot time. Then after 83 minutes or so sevilla wes 2:1 ahead. Is the time that is lost because of Cadiz time wasting in this case supposed to be added on in extra time?
If they waste time they should get yellow cards. If a referee ignored the law and instead adds time to avoid giving yellow cards, it’s incorrect and bad.

"I am sorry but I can't understand how some observers are appointed. Someone who has never whistled a GS match of a competition is appointed as an observer on a QF match.
ReplyDeleteTragic to say the least"
This must be the most crazy comment ever on this great blog. An observer without group stage match appointed for QF final is normal. It is about the quality of the observer.
Jurgen Klopp has never played CL football. Thomas Tuchel Chelsea and Carlo Ancelottti has not played there. Naigelsman hasn't played.
So that is tragic???
I am waiting with excitement for a reply.
I agree with you. Only whether observer's reports are meritoric and valuable should count. I often read reports written by "big names" and they are sometimes not much professional. The reports written by observers from smaller nations / without big international experience are often more detailed and include more interesting nuances than those written by refereeing stars.
DeleteI agree with you on the observers, but Ancelotti won two European cups with AC Milan and played 26 international games with Italy, so he did indeed play at the highest level.
DeleteBesides the written reports, there is a personal interaction between the referee and observer, including a verbal debrief. A referee will always feel when an observer speaks from his personal experience or from the books. In practical life, people learn better from role models who are sharing their experience rather than from written materials. There are exceptions, as in everyday life, but, in my opinion, the vast majority of observers should observe at the level they refereed.
