  2. Collum with a fourth appointment, other names were not possible for Belgrade... Skomina as expected in Liverpool, despite the controversial CL semifinal Roma - Liverpool. Mazic and Zwayer again in the same groups. Honestly, the perception I have is that this time committee has been in a big trouble while making appointments during this group stage. Too many forced choices and always the same referees.
For Sidiropoulos no big trust... the game is important only for EL qualification. He is an Elite referee with basically many options, given his nationality, but this doesn't help committee!
Kulbakov the only Category 1, so far, if I'm not wrong, with 3 CL games. This should mean something. However, he is always appointed for something not really big. Let's see whether he will be promoted on next June.

    1. I collected statistics for the referees, which can be considered for promotion. Considered only group stage and KO stage. Very interesting.
Kulbakou CL 10 and EL 25 (KO 7)
Kružliak CL 5 and EL 21 (KO 6)
Vinčič CL 5 and EL 14 (KO 5)

    2. Skomina with Hugh Dallas as observer

    3. Yes, disappointing appointment for Sidiropoulos, who could have been an alternative for Belgrade.
Kruzliak also has 3 CL matches already.

For Wednesday's most important match Donetsk-Lyon, it seems that Soares Dias is the only Elite option (under normal appointment "rules") - let's see whether he is more trusted than Sidiropoulos or whether there will be a "creative" solution instead.

    4. @Lde: And del Cerro Grande CL 2 and EL 5 (KO 1) is promoted...

    5. Also a Champions League group stage debut for Craig Pawson.

    6. Yes I forgot Kružliak as Category 1 with 3 CL games this season, but in my mind he was already Elite :) Surely he is a step ahead Kulbakov in any case, but Kulbakov very likely follows close.

    7. Shakhtar Donetsk - Olympique Lyonnais can be Cakir again...

      Delete
    8. It's possible, that it actually was Kuipers' match.
Cakir would be indeed a good choice - and Soares Dias can have ManCity-Hoffenheim then, another game, where it is difficult to find a referee.

      Delete
    9. Cuneyt Cakir cannot whistle. December 10, 2018 Monday evening in Turkey's Super League will play the whistle.

  3. Zwayer and Mazic swapped Games. Both were in charge of the same games on MD 2, Zwayer with Tottenham-Barca and Mazc with PSV-Inter and now Zwayer with Inter-PSV and Mazic with Barca-Tottenham.

    Debut for Pawson?

  4. I expected something bigger for Sidiropoulos after his UNL performance on England - Croatia. But it seems that the committee has no trust on him. He is an Elite for almost 4 years and his best appointment was an Arsenal - Bayern QF on 2017. Really disappointing.

    1. At least a strong warning should have been issued. No reaction at all is unacceptable.

38' - mandatory YC for reckless tackle missed, seconds earlier missed careless-reckless studs foul in front of AAR1

These both situations shows why Belarusian is not an elite referee. Always the same in his games: no management at all, too lenient...

    1. 10' at the moment of last touch by attacker (rebound) teammate was very likely in an extremely tight offside maybe by head, however since I think it was almost impossible to detect for the assistant referee, I just hope that offside assessment was not made on the original pass (attackers were in regular position). Also, referee had to show some cards, there was a clear mobbing by players from both teams when he talked to AAR1 and AR1.

40' no contact at all, crucial mistake

      45' extremely tight offside

      Delete
    2. 1. It think it's the right decision. I think the relevant question for the crew was, who deflected the ball after the shot. Then the forward`s shoulder was offside, so the right choice was made.

      2. Looks like a simulation.

      3. Could be, but not a clear one.

      Delete
    3. 1. Why do you need to look at the attacker's touch, because the ball bounced off the white player's pressed hand and at that moment was a clear offside. As soon as AR found out which player had the last touch, the correct final decision was made.
      2. Foot hooked, can be seen. All right.
      3. I watched a freeze frame for a minute, I can not make a decision.

    2. SFP for me - catches Mertens above the ankle with a high intensity - endangering his safety. Playing the ball before a tackle does not feature at all in LOTG so not relevant in eyes of LOTG (only eyes of ill-informed pundits/players)

To be honest I cannot really find any arguments to defend a YC.
I feel for Skomina though, besides perceiving there was studs tackle on the shin, no way he could really assess the intensity of the tackle, and YC was obviously safer option there.
VAR should solve such situations starting next year.

Skomina does a good job so far, justifying UEFA's trust (I thought he was good in SPO-ARL to be fair).
Dallas' presence suggests he could be on the road to Madrid?

  32. Very positive impression by Skomina. Totally different from Hoffenheim - Manchester City. It is clear that today we saw a very concentrated referee. One can discuss about the RC, in my opinion it was, but apart from that excellent performance. Always in control, good reading of the game, advantages, cooperation with assistant referees. Skomina in his good days is a pleasure to be watched. However, he didn't show always the same consistency during his long international career, and this was the big problem. There were long periods with too many mistakes and he looked to be not so much motivated. I think that he should continue in this way, by preparing every game (thanks for the info, Andreja) with a big focus. This will surely help him.
However, in any case, he deserves CL final before leaving international scene, that's sure, and the missed appointment for CL final in the last two seasons was something without explanations (especially 2016-17, in which he was excellent).

    1. Skomina completely missed the foul of Van Dijk. He whistled with some delay only after someone told him it was foul (one can easily see that Skomina turned away from that contact).
About the intervention: it was SFP and a red card. Without any doubt. The fact that Van Dijk touched the ball is not relevant (even Collina sustained this in a similar case some time ago). So, a red card is a big mistake and Skomina's perfromance should be evaluated accordingly. You can't extract this situation from Skomina's evaluation and say it's a 8,4-8,5 performance.

I read many things on this blog in last months and I said I won't post anymore. But some things must be said.

For clothes we have laundry-services, for cars we have car-washes, for referees we have this blog (with Chefren, Vlad and Mikael as main stars)
Some time ago Niclas closed his blog without a serious explanation. My personal opinion is: the blog was closed because of some threats from UEFA (probably UEFA didn't like the fact the referees are criticised). Having this in mind my feeling is that Chefren runs this blog with UEFA's accept. With other words: this blog is tolerated by UEFA but with some conditions. For this reason Chefren, Vlad and Mikael try always to protect the referees, to induce the idea that a referee had a good performance when is not the case (Cunha in River- Boca, Skomina in Pool- Napoli etc.). Something like: "Chefren, you may run this blog but you must have a specific attitude".

We don't know who is Chefren. We don't know his real name, we don't know his interest. To run a blog without any kind of advertising is a strange thing for me. Some time ago I was in Italy (for some football games) and I wanted to meet Chefren. I publicly invited him to a meeting (maybe you remember that wrote here, on the blog). Chefren was quiet, he didn't reply. It was strange for me.

PS: I hope Chefren won't delete this message and will give us some answers.

    2. I can only speak for myself. It was quite funny to read that I'm a UEFA's puppet on here. Believe me, far from that. You can see that sometimes I criticize referees. Some of them more often than others (for example Moen, Kulbakou), because I really don't like their passive attitude. That's it - we shouldn't look for particular incidents / mistakes only, but try to catch the overall picture of refereeing in particular games. Was the referee accepted? Did he feel the game? Did he choose a good approach? Were his calls not only correct in law but also optimal for the game? How he managed players? etc... Every referee makes mistakes and it would be pointless to pick every mistake and blame referees for that. We should take other aspects into account, too!

I can tell you who I am. I'm a fully disabled man whose only passion is watching football, especially referees. I have no interest in defending them or blaming them. I simply write what I feel.

And believe me, even the comments I post on here are taken as attacks by some referees who are typical braggarts and who can't bear any criticism. I didn't get much positive feedback by all those years, to be honest and I am gradually losing motivation to watch and write about referees.

As you maybe know, I have a Twitter account that is dead now because of many haters, mainly fans of Polish clubs, but also journalists being friends to president of Polish FA. I was also never respected by referees in my country, rather treated like an enemy (everybody who is neutral towards Polish FA, not mentioning critical, is treated like an enemy by them). I would say more about president of Polish FA and many connections but I'm simply afraid of him!

So, I do not benefit from writing comments on here. I do it with a smaller and smaller passion. Smaller and smaller because - it sounds ugly - I have encountered many referees and most of them (not all!!!) are self-satisfied, self-righteous, vain people, not worthy of attention.

    3. Dear petschovschi, I wont delete your message but I must notice again that, as you did many times in the past, after having stated of leaving the blog forever, you are again here. That's should mean something. I really don't understand, first of all, why you don't want to participate in the discussions, and then after a certain time you are back writing again. You are free to do that, but again, let me say, really don't understand. If you are here, you have to accept also other readers opinion.
Having said that, I will answer to your questions: my real identity is not important. I started to follow the previous blog when Niclas was the administrator, I shared with him the passion of having such blog and then when he decided to close, I accepted to open another blog. We are absolutely independent and everbody is entitled to have his opinion. I think that the fact you can read many different opinions demonstrates that. You mentioned Cunha among the referees "protected", according to your opinion, I remember that there were also negative comments about his performance. And the same for other referees. There is nothing strange here. No advertisement because I don't want that and people must feel free to read this blog. That's all. You are the only user making such questions and it seems as you don't want to believe to anything. This is my last answer, however, I think that you got all the info you wanted to know. Regards.

    4. ©Chefren: you are welcome

@Sale: I think you are absolutely right

      @petschovschi & Co.
I’ve been following this blog (and its predecessor 3rdteam) for the third year and I have never witnessed such a personal and below belt attack on members of this blog as is this by petschovschi on Chefren, Vlad and Mikael. I must say I was really happy when Chefren decided to open this blog (after the closure of 3rdteam) and he runs it excellently and informs us (with the help of Vlad & other members) on various aspects of refereeing. I appraise him for his democratic approach to commenting; sometimes as members we agree and sometimes we agree to disagree but always taking into account the cultural and polite way of communication. I’ve noticed that some members e.g. petschovschi, Sheriff Castrili, Anton Kniazev and his clone nick names, use this blog, to pour out all of their personal frustrations, life dissatisfaction, envy etc. on this blog. Attacking other members or demeaning referees in their posts tell more about their personalities than of those who are attacked/discredited by them. It is such a pity that Mr. Collina and Mr. Rosetti could not see their ‘’knowledge’’ and ‘’see-it-all’’ and ‘’know-it-all’’ refereeing abilities, which they present on this blog and hire them as an UEFA staff to make appointments or as referee observers in UEFA competitions.
C’mon guys, @petschovschi, @Sheriff Castrili, @Anton Kniazev give yourselves a slack, go to the bar for a beer of two, you’ll cheer up a bit. There is life outside of this blog and if you do not like it just skip it, we would really appreciate it because nobody needs your negativism on this blog (objectivity yes, negativism no).

    5. petschovschi

Your opinion about closing TTT is far from the truth. I think that Niclas made crystal clear why such decision was taken. Personally, I was 1.5 year absent. Not because UEFA threatened me but because my life had changed. And the same applies to Niclas and Chefren. I don't deny that we had issues with UEFA and we were under pressure (hacking on emails and other stuff) but we always managed to overcome such problems and the blog stayed alive for 6.5 years.

Such attack on Chefren is unfair. I am saying that because I know that he doesn't need UEFA's blessing.

    6. 'For clothes we have laundry-services, for cars we have car-washes, for referees we have this blog'

And, dear petschovschi, to make clothes dirty there is gardenwork, to make cars dirty there are Deep puddles, and to throw dirt at people and particular referees there are comments like yours and people like you. Below standard of interpersonal conduct.

      Delete
    7. I am partly disgusted and astounded by petschovschi's comments.

I am astounded because the idea that I somehow work for UEFA could not be further from the truth. I am a referee on the pitch with some experience and years ahead of me, but if you google my name you will find zero results. Also, I certainly do not believe in the utilitarianism of UEFA refereeing, quite the contrary, some of the politics being played there is really shocking believe me...
I only write about what I see, nothing more or less. I can be wrong, but I always write with integrity.

As I said, I think it's actually disgusting that you suggest that Chefren, Vlad and I work with an ulterior motive. All the work that I and everyone do on the blog comes is purely for the passion, nothing else.
Maybe you saw, I have a little place on the Kronika sędziowska blog where I write reports on matches which are far away from the general focus. Sometimes I cannot recognise one player. I could just watch the matches for my own satisfaction, but I want to give sth back to community that taught me so much (thank you for the nice comments about them, btw). It takes me a lot of time to watch the matches, write the notes, cut the clips, and then type up the report. If you think I do this not because I have a deep passion for refereeing and the blog, but in order to serve some hidden agenda...
The assumption that people should ignore all our work, because we are agents of UEFA makes me feel very angry.

I was really fed up of the populist comments on this blog, with undertones of reactionaryism, anti-intellectualism and a desparate self-aggrandisement, but thankfully I am convinced they are the minority here.
I really hope Law5 can carry on the positive road since the WC.

    8. Few words:

      1. for Chefren&friends

In this life white is always white and black is always black. There are, indeed, many shades of gray. We can have different opinions about those shades of gray. But white should be always white and black should remain always black.

The big problem is that, after some games, black became gray (or even white) on this blog.

      2. about UEFA committee

For FIFA/UEFA, the most important factor in evaluation of a referee is a (potential) scandal after the game. They really don't want scandals after the games. If we don't have scandal than the performance of the refereee is (at least) acceptable (no matter how many mistakes did the referee). Lahoz didn't whistle 4 penalties and 1 red card in Italy- Sweden, but there was scandal only after Northern Ireland- Switzerland (and you know the consequences). Brych went home from Russia after Germany- Serbia, when serbians made scandal etc.

      3. @edward

Thank you for your honest reply. You said "I don't deny that we had issues with UEFA and we were under pressure". I think it's not necessary for me to add something...

I want to add, it is also or maybe especially because you are not a referee, if you don't understand some things on this blog.
Said with all the respect. You write here as football fan and you are allowed, but you can't understand what is behind being a referee and what this means. Having said that, I want to repeat again: for you can be black, for me can be white. Where is the problem? If you write in polite words, I will never delete / censure. What do you want more? Make other people change idea? That's not possible.

The fact that you choose to focus on half of my reply suggests that you are only interested on what is convinient for your agenda.

Part 2 of my reply: ....but we always managed to overcome such problems and the blog stayed alive for 6.5 years.

    11. If we return to the trigger of this debate - Skomina's evaluation of Van Dijk's tackle ... Please take a minute and Google a bit - even former world class players, not to mention various experts, disagree about the "correct" decision. Maybe Skomina's decision was indeed wrong, but he had to take it in a split second and it certaintly wasn't as "blatant" mistake like some of you would like to show us here.

I never defend Skomina when he makes OBVIOUS mistakes (I "just" feel sorry for him as a Slovenian), but saying that his performance yesterday wasn't very good (maybe not brilliant or excellent, but still very good) and claiming that the mentioned decision "ruined" the overall decent impression, that I cannot accept.

    12. What Sale said but i have to add its easy for us to say anything after looking 5 times on replay. I would like to see you to get situations like this to see what you'll do. Sometimes its impossible to see everything right specialy if you have just a split seconds to get it correct.

    13. An interesting calculation for petschovschi:

      105x68x2.5

Calculate the result and you will see the cubic metres a referee team needs to look at in their games (players jumping, potential handballs, elbows, and such stuff).

As it was correctly said: Skomina looked somewhere else. Proper analysis should look at how it can be reached to make sure someone in the team looks at potential dangerous contact better. This is obviously what is done by Mr H Dallas. No need to throw the first stone to pull Skomina into the dirt.

You didn't understand the idea of my post. Probably you are not the only one.

When Chefren said "today we saw a very concentrated referee" I replied with the fact that Skomina totally missed the most important foul of the game. He saw the intervention of Van Dijk but he turned away from that contact. Very concentrated, indeeed ...
Opinion of Chefren was that we saw a very good Skomina (who deserves the CL final after this performance). I said that is impossible to rate the performance of Skomina as very good because he missed a red card for SFP.

Also Cunha's performance was praised by Chefren&friends. He missed a clear penalty (how is possible to whistle foul on gk ?) and a probable red card for Pablo Perez. What irritated me is the fact that, in both these cases, he whistled and stopped the game but HE DIDN'T TAKE (or SHOW) A DECISION. When you whistle you should immediatly show your decision (free kick for one team, penalty, throw-in etc.). Cunha waited for infos from VAR and with huge delay he showed the decisions.
The luck of Cunha is that River won and a big scandal was avoided. During the game, all the messages from blog were in favour of clear penalty. But after the game, when a big scandal was avoided because River won, it was the perfect opportunity for Chefren&friends to clean the garbage that Cunha made it during the game: "indirect free kick to defender is a supportable choice, the raised leg was a dangerous play against the keeper" (Chefren), "I accept the decision to whistle a foul on a goalkeeper" (Vlad), "Cunha showed to be one of the top class referees in the world last night" (Mikael). Cunha decided for a direct free kick, not an indirect free-kick (as many people thought during the game; it is possible to see that Cunha didn't have his hand raised when the free-kick was taken)

Sorry because I'm harsh but that's the reality.

    15. Mh, that's your reality which I accept. It's your opinion on these incidents. I spoke with numerous referees ranked highly in our leagues who all said that whistling an offensive foul on the goalkeeper can be supported and is even a clever call. I honestly disagree with this, for me it's a penalty, but, I know it's only an opinion.

I think most persons here were dissatisfied with the style and form of your comment rather than with your content. As you correctly said, obviously your main point was not understood by many people here. This should make you think. Perhaps it's because you put conspiracy theories regarding UEFA/Chefren/Vlad/Mikael over your content?

You hopefully see I try to be moderating this conflict, and even if you maybe have good arguments for your opinions on the incidents mentioned, the way how you placed your comments has not been OK, honestly.

    16. @petschovschi: If you don't like this blog, please don't read it and don't participate. It's easy.
I often had a different opinion than some and I was never banned. So, leave politics out of this blog, at least. Thank you.

  33. A good performance ruined by a crucial decision by Skomina. A clear as day leg breaking tackle easily a RC. How he does not give this i dont know. Crucial mistake which surely changed the outcome of the match. Overall, not as great a performance as everybody is making out it to be.

    1. What do you think about the new ones? Those who have left were actually very very good ARs. It’ll be hard to replace them!

    2. It will be hard but the new ones really deserved to be there, especially Tegoni and Peretti. I have big expectations.
