  1. Interesting to see that Kamphuis is the VAR and Nijhuis only the VAR-assistant. Another prove that he will be international soon.

  2. In all 4 matches the AVAR is a First Group referee and the VAR is lower ranked.

    1. Let's see whether it will be the same for the other pairs, a possible explanation is that Category 1 should officiate games and so better to have Category 2 (or lower) behind the monitors and this tournament can be used as making experience, maybe the selected VARs there will be assigned to many referees from other countries on next CL group stage.

    2. It can't be the same for the other pairs. ;)

    3. As for Italy, Fabbri VAR and Guida AVAR would mean going in this direction.

  4. Interesting that Attwell, Tierney and Kovacs are appointed in the group with their national team - but should not be a big problem.

  10. Expected first half by Istvan Kovacs in Poland 1 - 1 Belgium.

He is very motivated, active and full in in the match.Solid foul detecion and one correct YC given (40' BEL).

    ReplyDelete
  11. A correct YC by Kovács in a not challenging first half.
Not good start for Macron kits in this tournament as referee lost the badge from his chest.

  12. 48': simulation by #11 BEL, correct decision by István Kovács.

  13. 48' Correct YC for blatant dive. Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  14. 72' correct YC for holding (POL).

    ReplyDelete
  15. 90' YC for Poland goalie, time wasting.
92' YC for Poland #17, SPA.

  16. Good, expected level from Kovács in the opening game.

    1. I would say 8.5 is possible due to a very positive approach and the well spotted simulation. Maybe something like 8.45 but closer to 8.5 than 84.

      Delete
  17. I agree with the comments on Kovacs. Good (player) management, foul distinction, personality and disciplinary control. Simulation well spotted in the first half. Mark 8.4/8.5 for me as well.

Now Gozubuyuk in an important match. I am looking forward to his performance tonight, as he has never impressed me. His presence is mostly arrogant without any feeling for the game. No natural leadership. His appointment for this U21 championship was a big surprise for me after a moderate season. But let's wait and see.

  18. Can anybody answer me may Srdjan Jovanovic in case of good preformances be appointed for final

Jovanovic is very promising referee. He had good season in Europe.
Also, he has UEFA U19 finall.

  19. Quite early YC from Gözübüyük. I think correct.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Intense start for Gözübüyük...now another 2 possible YC asked (reckless challenge on Fabián, SPA on Kean), but keeps authority.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Already from the start no acceptance by the players and losing control. And his finger pointing to his pocket....

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like all Dutch referees but not Gözübüyük

    ReplyDelete
  23. Absolutely no control in this game by Gözübüyük.No strict words to calm down the match (Kean vs. Vallejo).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very challenging 1st half for Gözübüyük.
Already 3 cards shown in 25 minutes,no control and acceptance with players.

    ReplyDelete
  25. What a brutal foul by Italian player.Even NO foul whistled!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. What a foul missed close to sideline...

    ReplyDelete
  27. What are Italian players doing? And why isn't it being stopped?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now a possible penalty: Italian player was "fouled" by Spanish goalkeeper!
    Your thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Strictly by the LotG, penalty would not be wrong. But they normally are not whistled in these situations, it's accepted behaviour by the GK.

      Delete
  29. I have to also mention,Italian's style of play is not helping Gözübüyük to have control of the match.
They are playing like it is matter of life and death.Rough tackles, hard fouls, too much complaining...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Referee should started this game on two ways:

    1) No cards for the first two situations (First YC situation and Kean's situation), but with very strong and clear verbal warnings.

    2) Very early YCs for both situations.

Referee choose something between and that didnt work.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you, Whistle2. That would have been a smart and equally balanced start. Plus, a better face to face communication might have helped in reducing complaints

      Delete
    2. I hope that he will be much better in 2nd half. All the best for Dutch team in next half.

      Delete
  31. Very bad performance from Gözübüyük so far. He missed at least 4 YCs, maybe some of them could be second for the player. He allowed very rough play from home team. Awful football from Italians, lots of harsh tackles. Referee lose control from the beginning of the match. No authority, nothing. This should be his last match on this Championships, or he could be appointed to observe some not important match in the second round.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Game calmed down last 15 minutes of 1st half. After Italy scored everything calmed,Gözübüyük job was lot easier.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not really. After that, a missed 2nd YC for Italy and a YC for Spain's #7.

      Delete
    2. That was not for 2nd YC. It will be to strict. Don't forget one important thing. Italy is a domestic team and he iritated Italian players in first 30 minutes.

      Delete
    3. Well, actually a good referee should forget that… and given how that player earned the first YC, the missed one is very similar. He has chosen not to give it. Let's see if he keeps that line onwards.

      Delete
    4. I understand you but it's not everything in the LOTG. Referee must not be a police officer on the field and must not have the same tactic for every game. He need to feel a spirit of the game.

      Delete
  33. As I mentioned before, I wasn't impressed and again I am not. All responses here is a confirmation of what I have said.

    ReplyDelete
  34. From what I have heard is that in Dutch FA his colleagues doesn't like him and nobody trust him. Kuipers and Makkelie are never sitting next to him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Not bad Gozubuyuk please consider match difficulty. All referees at this tournament would have had troubles.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It became difficult because of the management and approach. All games refereed by Gozubuyuk are having difficulties, that's no coincidence for me.

      Delete
    2. not that bad, but also not convincing and with more errors than should occur. and not really in control. but one must admit: the match was very difficult at the beginning.

      Delete
  36. Me too. I didn't like Serdar Gozbuyuk after a game in Europe League in 2017, between Genk and Astra 1-0, with some strange decisions. I like Danny Makelie style.

  37. What a foul missed in very dangerous position for Spain!

  40. 76'mandatory yc not given to ITA #7.
Off the ball pulling in a promising situation, how is that not YC is beyond me.

    1. It's not a promising situation. The player is 70 yds from the goal, facing his own goal.

    1. This was the first one in the tournament, right?

  42. This will be his first and last match at this championship. Or perhaps a second one, a not important one, and then he will go home.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Penalty is the correct decision in my opinion. On a good day, the referee would have spotted the incident himself.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Correct intervention by Kamphuis.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Gözübüyük was very close, but he was following the action.
    Real fault for him there?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think we can't blame him for that. As you said, he was following the action.

      Delete
  46. Gözübüyuk is missing too many 'off-the-ball' bookable offences IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  47. IMO this won't be his last match as there are only 9 referees at his tournament, i think he will get one more.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Generally, disappointing performance by Gözübüyük.

For a referee who he has a lot of experiance (8 season in Eredivisie, 7 seasons like a FIFA referee, UEFA U21 tournament two years ago) i expected much better performance.

Dutch referee choosed wrong tactic and lost control of the game at the begain. He allowed very rough play from home team.
    He missed two clear YCs.
    Too many fouls missed.
    No authority.
Only positive thing for him tonight was his fitness.

Good decision to give a penalty after VAR intervention. As i said, we can't blame him for penalty situation because he was following the action.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sad to see that such a bad behaviour gets a reward. Hopefully, the responsible of permitting and thus intensifying that behaviour won't get a reward too and will be sent home ASAP.

IMO, the performance was one of the worst I have seen in the last months in UEFA. Not only he missed about 7-8 YC and a penalty in which VAR correctly intervened. Some of those cards could have been straight reds easily. The foul close to the line in the first half comes to my mind, or some kicks when the rival player was on the ground (first half too) that were, at the very least, unsporting behaviour. He doesn't deserve to continue in the tournament, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I would give 8.0/8.1, but if we want to be strict and count all the missed yellow cards and fouls the mark will be at least 7.7

    ReplyDelete
  51. The game for Gözübüyük was surely very difficult, but one should try to understand why. I think that referee could have made it better by a different approach. I fully agree with the opinions reported by some people here, that he missed in finding the right foul to start to book players. Best option in such game would have been to be very strict from the beginning. In addition to that some clear missed fouls and points for improvement in foul detection. I think that players didn't help him and that's true, but a different refereeing was required there. A referee with Gözübüyük's experience should have noticed that from the beginning. Better to book many players than to end a game with so many unpunished challenges. Missed penalty was not his fault in my opinion, as it was almost impossible to have eyes on everything, VAR is there exactly for such incidents (this incident, in particular, could have been spotted only by an AAR, without VAR).
He should do definitely better in his second game to have a hope for KO stage, but of course we must wait for other referees performances.
Let's say however that I expected definitely more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fully agree. Your mark for his performance is ?

      Delete
    2. Who knows, maybe FIFA's terrible "epidemy" regarding showing as few cards as possible and whistling as few fouls as possible have went to UEFA too? I hope not. Probably not, I am quite sure that it was just in one match due to the referee's personal untactical approach. But we will see as the tournaments progresses.

      Delete
    3. I started to think that, too, Anonymous. :D The disciplinary line was non-existent, especially at the end of the game. That reminded me the U20WC.

  54. OT: Referee appointments for LaLiga promotion play-off Final.

    1st leg. 20 June 2019, 21:00 CET.
    DEPORTIVO LA CORUÑA - MALLORCA

Referee: Daniel Jesús TRUJILLO SUÁREZ (1983, Canary Islands, LaLiga referee between 2016-2018)
    AR1: Francisco Javier García Sabuco
    AR2: Fernando Estela Bravo
    4O: Guillermo Conejero Sánchez

    2nd leg. 23 June 2019, 21:00 CET
    MALLORCA-DEPORTIVO LA CORUÑA

Referee: Valentín PIZARRO GÓMEZ (1981, Madrid)
    AR1: David Maldonado Urbina
    AR2: Iván Massó Granado
    4O: David Gálvez Rascón

So, if CTA-RFEF does like last year, the a priori 6 candidates for LaLiga promotion are:

-César Soto Grado (La Rioja, 1980)
-Juan Luis Pulido Santana* (Canary Islands, 1983)
-Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos (Castilla la Mancha, 1989)
    -Jorge Figueroa Vázquez (Andalusia, 1980)
-Daniel Trujillo Suárez (Canary Islands, 1983)
    -Valentín Pizarro Gómez (Madrid, 1981)

*Quite unlikely IMO as he had a disappointing performance in Mallorca-Albacete with 3 crucial mistakes.

Official lists are expected to be published maybe in the first days of July as official competition ends exactly in June 30 (2nd and 3rd division play-offs)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If those are all the names, I'd bet on Díaz de Mera Escuderos and maybe Trujillo Suárez (he was not that bad in LaLiga IIRC… but someone had to be demoted), as the others are "too old" (38-39). Let's see if other referees have chances too.

      Delete
    2. Prieto Iglesias is also 1981 born and was (re)promoted last year, so I wouldn't be suprised at all to see 'old' referees promoted.

My early bet indeed is Díaz de Mera Escuderos being promoted, but along with Pizarro Gómez in case of a convincing performance. Those would be two deserving promotions IMO.

Agree. Trujillo Suárez's demotion last year was kind of 'undeserved' because of Iglesias Villanueva who actually had to be demoted instead of him, who (IMO) didn't have a good season either but maybe for CTA it was easier to 'sacrifice' an almost newcomer referee with no international projection and because of his age, still eligible to referee in the lower category in case of demotion (which was not the case of Iglesias Villanueva).

      Delete
    3. Yes, but that's the thing and why I bet on Trujillo Suárez: they had already been in Primera División. If you have to choose an old referee, better be it one with experience if he has earned it. Besides, he is the 2nd youngest in the list. I don't consider Pulido Santana, who has an impressive list of polemic situations in play-off games and this season just added one more.

  55. SRB-AUT

One of the most important things is to choose the right momment for the first YC on the match, and Ekberg definitely done it. Very calm and pedantic refereeing.
35' full control of the match and good authority.
I'm watching the Swedish for the first time and I must say I'm positively surprised.

    1. 38' VAR intervention, goal for Austria is awarded.
AR's decision overruled (he signalised offside)

      Delete
    2. And it was not minor mistake by AR, attacker was onside about 1.5m

      Delete
    3. PS
VAR check wasn't the fastest one, at first it looked like the play will be restarted with goal kick, but Spanish VARs intervened.

      Delete
    4. I thought he whistled a free kick (guessed for potential handball in attack). If I'm right, probably such mistake won't be well-received by the powers that be because the referee created something that didn't happen.

About the rest - very methodic way of refereeing, keen to show cards for offences other referees would have classified as demanding a warning only.

I liked how quick he was reaching to his pocket after deciding to show a card. It reminded me Roberto Rosetti :)

      Delete
    5. Terrible mistake by the assistant, there wasnt even a slightest doubt that he was wrong from the second he lifted hia flag. Great refereeing and control of the match from Ekberg though.

      Delete
    6. I like Ekberg. He looks like a good policeman on the pitch, nothing seems to scape to his control (IIRC, he actually works as a policeman in Sweden).

      Delete
    7. What is your opinion about red card? In my opinion it is maybe little bit harsh and influenced by the sad fact that player broke his leg

      Delete
    8. Red card for Dogso or for the tackle?
Wuth that horror injury, it's very hard to sell the decision to show YC. Live, it looked like maybe the foul, but on the replay...

      Delete
    9. For me that was for orange card. What about possible DOGSO?

      Delete
    10. I believe it was for DOGSO

      Delete
    11. For me the RC is rather wrong, because I think neither the criteria for SPA nor for DOGSO are fulfilled.
By the outcome, you can claim, that it endangered the safety, but that was rather unlucky than the defender's fault IMO.
The OFR itself was OK, because the referee seemed to have completely missed the foul and a RC was possible.

      Delete
    12. And for DOGSO: I think, the other defender could intervene due to the angle towards the goal.

      Delete
    13. Neither SPA?
There is clear path to the goal in front of the AUT player

      Delete
    14. Hm, Milenkovic was 10 metres away.

      Delete
    15. Sorry, SPA should be SFP in my first comment.
But combined with the fact, that Wolf was not completely in possession before the foul and running parallel to the goal line, I think, that Milenkovic would have reached him in time.
But probably you can find arguments for both colours.

      Delete
    16. Looking at some replay on youtube, it seems that the Austrian player got injured on his own. The foul itself was not worth a RC according to me. Here is a link to the situation:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewXtVd3WAGg

      Delete
    17. BTW, it is only(?) a severe injury of the ankle joint, not a broken leg.

      Delete
    18. That is somehow good news, Philipp

      Delete
    19. Unfortunately the news got worse again: A broken extramalleolus (ankle) is reported now.

      Delete
  56. Red card only because player injured. VAR afraid of leaving it unpunished.

    ReplyDelete
  57. After watching the replay, I'd accept a RC there because of DOGSO, but SFP would be harsh if not wrong, it was a terrible but unlucky outcome.

How was Ekberg in 2nd half besides that? I could not watch it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can only report from minute 50' onwards. Besides the RC I saw a correct YC at 53'to Mašovic (Serbia), and an odd interference with the game around 71', he stayed too close to the play and was lastly caught by a player.
Also, at 85' an offside was whistled, I did not understand why AR1 did not wait the end of the action before raising the flag. That was a tight call.
Anyway, very calm and pleasant personality showed by Ekberg, this is surely a quality

  58. It's strange because looking at the screen, initially Ekberg seems like he's reviewing the 'SFP angle' and after that the 'DOGSO angle'.

    1. IMO it was definitely no SFP but red card for DOGSO is correct (although just YC would also be correct).

  59. Can someone please confirm that there were only 1 OFR and 1 VAR-only review in Serbia - Austria?

    1. Two decisions were changed: gola by Austria allowed (wrong flag by AR2 on the pitch), and then OFR for RC, Ekberg changed decision there.

  60. Good first half by Orel Grinfeld. 1 correct caution (36') and I would prefer another one at 43'. Nothing extraordinary on the first half.

However, he gives me the impression that he is not so interested on this match.

  61. 72' Corcect penalty decision

  62. The 3:0 was a nice moment for Grinfeld as the goal was scored after he had given an (expected) advantage.

  63. I just watched the penalty and the advantage before 3-0, both excellent decisions. However, I think that from his position, penalty was also whistled thank to intuition, because it was impossible to have a very clear view, in addition VAR detected (this was surely impossible from the pitch) that handball had occurred when ball was still in play. So, it seems a very good display by Israeli.

    1. The AR could have detected the handball, I think. Even with VAR, there is this classical way of being helped as a referee. ;)

  64. Anything notable happened in Romania - Croatia so far? Any VAR reviews? Correct penalty? What's the performance? Thanks for the info in advance!

  65. Penalty by Madden given after OFR: Short distance, but arm clearly stretched away from the body. Correct decision, I think. And difficult to spot directly.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Good performance in general from Madden in the 1st half, the penalty was indeed very difficult to spot without VAR but 100% correct PK.

Perhaps he can be more consistent, he let the game flow and allowed very hard tackles in the first 15 mins, but after a Croatian player got injured and had to be substituted, he changed his approach and whistled almost everything until HT.

    1. Very good performance by Madden. He allowed strong play, but knew when to stop and give few yellow cards. His authority was obvious and he controlled game very well, despite few missed clear fouls.

    2. I agree Madden was really positive today. Crucially, consistent disciplinary control with a smart decision for card opening and full acceptance, as pictured by the relaxed and kind handshake from ROU #19 with the referee as he was leaving the pitch for substitution.
Only clear point for improvement is fitness, I did not see him sprint very much today. Temperatures over 30°C cannot be enough to justify this .

    Missed YC?

    2. There is no reason for the YC

  71. Good performance so far for Jovanović on a normal difficulty match.

  72. I think the penalty should have been retaken (keeper infringements) but why the assistants never signal it?

  75. 62' correct penalty for France. After OFR he gave a straight RC for SFP

  76. Another VAR review for RC with the outcome of a terrible injury. This time SFP is correct, I was thinking there would be VAR since I watched the replay.

In live that was for YC. Replay show us that start was for RC (SFP)
    Good VAR intervation

  79. Very, very good refeeeing by Jovanovic so far.
Second penalty for France awarded, referee gave YC.
After VAR rewiev, RC is shown... Hard to spot without VAR but correct decision.

After missed PK, Jovanovic awarded IFK after ball bounced from the post to the penalty taker.

  80. IMO, a very good performance by Jovanovic. Both penalty calls were correct decisions and all the cautions correct. Also a correct RC after an OFR.

  81. Faultless officiating by Srđan Jovanović (I don't blame him for missing SFP, certainly forgiveable to miss that on a expectation-perception-recognition level). Full 8,5 performance in my opinion.

UEFA should now be convinced: Serbian is ready for a CL debut.
