  1. Impressive first half by Diego Haro in my opinion. Correct early penalty for handball given on his own (3'), three correct YCs for a reckless challenge, simulation and SPA. No messing around, meek warnings or gestures; backing up his words. Also, very calm and respectful player management.

    1. A bit weaker, but still solid second half. Big point for improvement: Positioning (he got hit by the ball three times) and management for dropped balls. His instructions for these were not accepted by the players and it took quite some time until play continued.

Three more cards (Reckless, Reckless use of arms and a late tackle that was half reckless half SPA). Maybe three more scenes were card were possible (49', 79', 86'). Especially the first one is a scene open for discussion. Looked like he stepped into the heel of his opponent, Haro just gave a foul. Even a RC could have been possible. OFR would have been a good idea - in case he does not deem it SFP, a 2nd YC could have been issued.

In 53' a Paraguay goal got cancelled by VAR for an offside of the player who had given the "pre-assist". Replays were only shown without a drawn line, seemed very close.

Still, a solid performance. Very calm referee, has no problem to talk and explain. Maybe even a bit too much.

  2. Minute 42 Uruguay vs Ecuador. Suarez tackled in the penalty area and then the ball goes to an offside standing teammate who then touches it. However the foul is before the offside. I think this was a foul but if not a foul okay play on and then offside.

  3. Not convincing first half by Anderson Daronco in a challenging Copa America match between Uruguay 3 - 0 Ecuador.

He is active and motivated. His physical conditions and positing are excellent, okayish foul detection (some problems with arm challenges) and clear + strong body language.

    Key match incidents:

Minute 2': Correct evaluated penalty situation. No handball by Ecuadorian defender, only elbow.

Minute 14': Correct YC for URU

Minute 19': Missed YC for ECU after an illegal arm challenge

Minute 24': In my opinion wrong VAR intetvention by VAR Wilton Sampaio (YC was turned to RC).Clear YC because a natural air challenge with no active impact movement!

Minute 42': Correct play on in the penalty area against Suarez in my opinion

Minute 45+1': Missed YC for Suarez after a dive whistled by Daronco.

Minute 45+1': Missed YC for URU player after a reckless air fight

    1. I am okay with VAR intervention here as was Marco Antonio Rodriguez on the broadcast. He said that Daronco should have Red Carded him himself without VAR helping him out.

And I am 100% with the Red Card decision. The Ecuadorian player used his arm as a weapon. I for one am not willing to wade into dangerous waters of speculating intention, intensity, movement, natural/unnatural. I'm only taking into consideration the act.

      Delete
    2. The fist is an argument for "weapon" and RC, but there is no hitting/punching movement, but just leadingw with the arm, therefore it's 60:40 for YC in my opinion.
Anyway, not a clear and obvious error. And the "missed indicent" argument is difficult, because there was an initial YC. But maybe there was still something, that Daronco missed.

      Delete
    3. You don't have to use a swinging or punching movement to inflict damage on an opponent. Simply "leading" with an elbow or forearm (solid surfaces) into the head/face area of an opponent can lead to injury. IMO, these type of challenges need to be eradicated from the sport. Head injuries have devastating long term consequences on players.

  4. Interesting sound byte. During the Ecuador v Uruguay broadcast. Marco Antonio Rodriguez (former FIFA Referee MEX) was asked by his fellow broadcast team member. If he would have liked to have officiated with VAR. He specifically pointed out the Luis Suarez "biting" incident versus Italia as a time in his career where he would have loved to have had VAR available for his use. He said that in the moment and on the field he had a strong feeling that Suarez had done something wrong. But there was no way for him to prove it and to justify any sort of disciplinary action.

  5. For those of you who were wondering what color referee kits Marathon Sport has provided the referee's. So far we've seen, Yellow, Blue, Black, and Red. And I like them all. I am especially appreciative of Marathon Sport for using solid black shorts and socks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And Marathon Sport just had to go ruin the referee kit look for me. Diaz de Vivar wore the yellow shirt and unfortunately also wore hideous yellow socks.

      Delete
    2. I like the colours but I'm seeing similar issues to the new European uniforms in that the pockets on the shorts don't appear to be big enough for large cards.

      Delete
    3. Yeah I really like the shirt colors also and the design. They're definitely much sharper looking than what the Gold Cup referee's are wearing. The size of the shorts pockets for sure a problem for the referee's who carry their cards or booklet there.

  10. Absolutely riveting television in the Copa America. Watching a control room of referees and watching the referee look at a screen. With no images of what they are even looking at until after the eventual decision. Whoever the host broadcaster is needs to improve drastically!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah whoever is running the television feed in Brasil needs to step up their game. There have been multiple OFR's situations where we the people watching at home have absolutely zero idea of what images the referee is watching. Not at all like how OFR's are being handled at the Women's World Cup.

  11. I have no idea why this goal from Coutinho has been ruled offside by VAR. The player in the offside position does not affect the play at all.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I read the news and it said the ball touched Firmino. That's the only possible explanation I guess.

    2. Ah interesting. I could not tell that the ball had hit Firmino from the images I saw.

    1. 60th minute Gabriel Jesus goal annulled.
Is that touch by the Venezuelan player an intentional play? Or is considered a save/rebound?

      Delete
    2. 87th minute Coutinho goal annulled
The ball does hit the knee of Firmino who is in a questionable offside position. The only doubt on the play is whether there are 2 Venezuelan players nearer to the goal line than him. Based on the replays I've seen. There wasn't. Good offside call.

      Delete
  13. Bolivia was correctly given a PK after Peruvian player handled in the penalty area. But the entire play was quite confusing. AR1 Lescano incorrectly called offside (player was clearly onside) on the play leading up to the handling incident. So VAR had to decide if there was or wasn't an offside infringement and whether the Peruvian player was guilty of handling.

    ReplyDelete
  14. As I watch this years Copa America. I am reminded of the disappointment I feel during each and every tournament. Some if the most skilled and talented players in the world participate in the tournament. Yet the type of play you're treated to on the pitch doesn't reflect all that skill and talent. Instead the teams and players resort to a brutal and cynical style of play. And unfortunately the referee's are entirely complicit.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly my point. The brutal nature of the matches on display is questionable and the referee indulges them. It's more like the ref com in South America tells them to act in such manner

  15. Bolivia v Pero
81st minute missed 2nd yellow card by Zambrano

Paolo Guerrero (Peru) in an attempt to win the ball plants his studs into the foot of a Bolivian player. The same type of foul for which Zambrano cautioned him earlier in the match. And in typical cowardly manner, Zambrano knowing that the Peruvian player has already been cautioned. Refuses to correctly show the 2nd caution and red card. The Bolivian player understandably upset vocalizes his disapproval and is quickly cautioned by Zambrano. Totally senseless disciplinary line.

  16. Bolivia v Peru
    90+5

Scary scenes on the pitch. Bolivian player #17 lands awkwardly and bashes his head on the pitch knocking himself unconscious,

    ReplyDelete
  17. Interesting! I've never seen this done before. At the 90th minute of Brasil v Venezuela. The 4th official raised the electronic board to signal that there will be a minimum of 7 minutes of added time. During the 7 minutes time is lost because of a Venezuelan injury. So at the 90+7 minute, the 4th official once again raised the electronic board to signal that there will be another 2 minutes added.

  19. I just need to give the tribute to the best officiated Copa America final ever- Heber Lopes in 2016.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know that his performance divided a lot of opinion. Some people to this day think that it's the worst officiated Final ever. While others loved the fact that he stayed true to himself and most importantly to the LOTG. He didn't allow the fact that it was a Final influence his approach.

I personally loved the way he worked the match. I appreciated that he he didn't go South Africa 2010 Howard Webb style just because it was a Final.

      Delete
    2. One of the hardest games ever to officiate, especially 1st half where we saw 5 yellow cards (could have been more) and 2 red cards.

I've never seen dirtier and more violent match, even for South American standars that was too much IMO.

One name who comes to my mind that could have provided better officiating and better match control is Cakir,he is no stranger to very violent and dirty matches, especially matches like big Turkish derbies that can be similar to this one.

About Lopes,I will write what I wrote 3 years ago:
He was not good, but he was not bad.

  20. OFR by Alexis Herrera in 33'. Much confusion as to why, as CONMEBOL never shows pictures during the review. Decision was no penalty for handball against Qatar. From the looks of it, a different decision would have been supportable. No clue if he found the handball not punishable or it was outside the area.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very lenient approach from Herrera. So many protest from Qatar being unpunished.
As I was writing this small confrotation accured,so he showed 2 cards.

  29. Interesting offside/goal situation in Japan v Ecuador on the 1-0 goal (~14 minutes in). VAR looked at it for a while before it was confirmed a goal.

    2. In my opinion offside is not punishable but very borderline.
Regarding the decision to confirm it by VAR, we can't know, it is possible that player was assessed ONSIDE, and then AR mistake just based on that. What do you think?

      Delete
    3. The only explanation of this decision is that he was onside. If he wouldn't be onside, clear no goal. But if onside, fully correct decision.

      Delete
    4. You can't say "clear" because the offside can be discussed if punishable or not, in my opinion.

  30. And in the 30th minute (or so), an amusing dropped ball situation.

Ref very careful to push the ECU players back 4m, drops ball, JPN player touches it before it hits the ground. Ref calls it back. Much less careful about pushing the ECU players back. Successful drop second time around.

  32. On a side note, Pitana looked very strong in the opening match BRA-BOL.
Sleek, fit and ready to go. Just about the opposite we all saw at the World Cup Final. When in shape and with proper rest, he is a very reliable ref.

Too bad the committee at the World Cup thought he would be up to the job in such a dispirited state he showed during the entire match.

    ReplyDelete
  33. On another side note, pretty much all refs in Copa America seem very fit and are keeping up with play nicely. Good job in preparation, everyone!

  34. At 8630 it appeared that the ball went out for a goal kick. Upon restart the Brazil keeper passed the ball to his fullback who was standing well within the penalty area. He received the ball and carried it out as quickly as possible. Should that not have been called back and been retaken or did I miss something?

  35. Roldan has quick trigger.3 bookings in 4 minutes.
I would say he is one of rare refs from Conmebol that is not afraid to show cards at any time.

  36. Brazil - Paraguay: OFR in 58', it should be a protocol's mistake.
It was only a matter of INSIDE / OUTSIDE. VAR had just to inform referee that foul had occured outside, so RC instead of YC. No need of a so long review, I don't know why this was made.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 83' OFR for what? Never more than YC.
I didn't watch games of this Copa America, but what happened in Brazil - Paraguay makes clear, in my opinion, that CONMEBOL has not a good knowledge about VAR protocol.

      Delete
    2. I thought 83’ was because the referee missed the incident—he didn’t even give a foul initially.
Also for 58’ there might have been another touch inside the area so I think that’s why there was an OFR.

  37. COLvCHI. 70. Handball that creates a goal scoring opportunity. Missed by ref live (understandably, not a great angle to see it), VAR caught and disallowed.

    4. Initially most were under the impression that the play was being reviewed for a possible offside. As a Chilean player was possibly interfering with the Colombian GK's ability to make a save. It wasn't until Pitana was doing the OFR that the handling became evident.

      Delete
    5. I was wondering, whether with the new LotG one could consider handball before a goal as a factual decision and therefore not need an OFR.

      Delete
    6. That's a good point Phillipp S but I think an OFR is still needed even just from a, selling the decision, point of view.

  40. Brazil-Argentina is the most important game of this Copa America. Roddy Zambrano is not the most important referee of this Copa America. Let's wait and see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But nearly no alternative. The referees from SF countries obviously are not possible, Roldan had ARG in the QF and everyone else (e.g. Diaz de Vivar and Valenzuela) is less experienced than Zambrano, I think - or at least don't have a better reputation.
For the same reasons it's quite likely, that the final will be handled by someone from a country, which loses in the SF.

      Delete
  41. An interesting remark by Arbitro Internacional: it seems as this will be the first time for a referee from Ecuador in an official Brazil - Argentina, it never happened before, at least in recent times. Not even Byron Moreno handled it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Roddy Zambrano is not the man for a Argentina v Brasil clash. But much like UEFA, CONMEBOL has used a very small group of referee's for any and all major games. Now they've backed themselves into a corner and are forced to use an unproven Zambrano.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wasn't Bascunan (CHI) a possibility for Argentina v Brasil?

    1. It seems as committee didn't want to appoint referees coming from the 4 nations involved in semifinals.

    2. That indeed makes sense. I guess I'm too used to how CONCACAF controversially works. As they routinely assign referee's no matter if their home nation is still in the tournament.

      Delete
  44. And Roldan was not an optipn for this match cause he already had Argentinian match in last round.
So CONMEBOL really put themselves in the corner.
Hopefully Zamvrano will have a good game.

Also we have to mention that Roldan also has challenging match,Battle of Pacific,so it wont be easy for him for sure.

  47. Well now that 1st half is over we can say that Zambrano was not the right choice for this hot match.
Best example is his 1st YC shown to Tagliafico. It was fully deserved, but couple seconds before that BRA player fouled ARG player and deserved YC.

After that couple fouls worthy of a YC,some of them not even whistled.

ARG players are not pleased with his decisions,if he continues like this I can already see them blaming Zambrano for loss.

  48. Second half is looking better, a fair few cards given so it looks to be under better control now. However there is still 30 minutes to go.

  49. If only Cunha had passed his pre tournament physical. He would have been the ideal candidate for this match.

And I must add that the country of Ecuador and the entire CONMEBOL really miss Carlos Vera.

    ReplyDelete
  50. How in the world was that not a PK? The Brazilian player with no attempt to play the ball just time through Otamendi using his shoulder/forearm. I get it, on a corner kick there is a lot to at for the referee. But for the VAR to miss it is criminal.

Further proof that as long as it's humans behind the screens. They'll only see want they want to see. Or see what makes the center referee look better.

    1. Sheriff, again, VARs want to see all. Do you truly believe they don't? If you do, no comments. Why on earth would someone (doesn't matter referee or VAR) intentionally make a mistake? That's as ridiculous as to say "VAR works only for big teams". And how did not intervening make the referee look better in this case? No way. If VAR doesn't intervene when it has to intervene it's because they have missed it (unacceptable) or they didn't tell the referee to delay restart when the ball was next out of play if check was not over (also unacceptable). It isn't because they don't want to intervene or see something.

      Delete
    5. Sheriff as ridiculous as always. CONMEBOL clearly stated that the malfunction had no impact on the match. What evidence do you have that proves theses as fake news? Unless you are Brazil's president's bodyguard, you have no evidence. Nothing close to fake news. Sorry but you are behaving like Trump. Yes, the VAR made mistakes. Whe can say he "malfunctioned". But communication also malfunctioned before the match, WITHOUT having an impact on the communication during the match. Both things malfunctioned but they were not linked.
