  1. Completely off-topic: here is the highlight video of NÎMES OLYMPIQUE vs OGC NICE, a very challenging match refereed by François Letexier (Category 1 in UEFA).
    => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHFr1T3TAyA

I'd like to hear some opinions of these incidents:

Penalty for Nice awarded for handball (VAR supported the decision)
    => https://youtu.be/fHFr1T3TAyA?t=27

Penalty for Nîmes awarded after OFR
    => https://youtu.be/fHFr1T3TAyA?t=88

    2YC for Coly (Nice)
    => https://youtu.be/fHFr1T3TAyA?t=134

    2YC for Martínez (Nîmes)
    => https://youtu.be/fHFr1T3TAyA?t=164

Furthermore, Nîmes captain has been sent off with a straight RC for aggressive behaviour towards Letexier just after issuing the 2YC to Martínez. I also read on L'Equipe, that Letexier rejected two penalty shouts for Nîmes prior to their 2YC, it would be nice to have some more information about that.

    1. Hi Stake, very interesting case study indeed, I also wanted to mention this game. Based solely on the highlights, it looks like a disappointing performance, below expected level.

      My thoughts:

      1) penalty for Nice: wrong decision, the arm is used as support and points to the ground. This should IMO be considered as "clear and obvious mistake", so also VAR stuff

      2) correct penalty to Nîmes after OFR, missed incident by Letexier

      3) wrong 2nd YC to Coly (Nice). There is barely a pushing with the hand whereas the trip to the foot is unintentional and not worth a YC.

      4) correct 2nd YC to Martínez (Nîmes), reckless challenge

  2. So Skomina,Turpin,Brych,Kuipers,Zwayer and Rocchi for 2nd legs.

    1. I think simulation, the player falls before the GK touches him.

  4. Giallatini is back after a very long injury, he missed whole 2018-2019 season. On last weeks he got a friendly (Roma - Rel Madrid,) an Europa League assignment and now this play off. He will make his return in serie A in the first matchdays. I hope he fully recovered.

    1. So no Turpin in CL or EL play-offs.

      Delete
    2. Surprising. So there is a better chance for Hategan and the British refs to get a CL play-off now.

      Delete
    3. Hategan surely deserves a CL play off, if you ask me, more than English referees.

      Delete
    4. I agree, but the English have the advantage of VAR in their league now (and therefore possible VARs from England)

  7. Question: is this OK regarding attacking players on the defensive wall according to the new Laws of the Game (last video on the page). https://www.marca.com/futbol/primera-division/cronica/2019/08/17/5d5831c7ca4741766f8b4574.html

In that situation, if the position of the attacking team is considered irregular, should VAR intervene and cancel the penalty? (Theoretically, not in that exact situation as I think there might be doubts).

  8. I have to say that i am very satisfied with Danny Makkelie as a referee in Bern. I consider him as a rising star and one of the best young referees in the world. I wish him all the best in Switzerland. For return game in Belgrade I expect Skomina, Rocchi or Turpin (i would prefer Kuipers, too, but tho Dutchmen probably is not possible).

    1. A Slovenian won't be appointed to a Serbian team.

      Delete
    2. Why not? If German can be appoint to Swiss then Slovenian can go in Serbia.

      Delete
    3. Name one example of a Slovenian in Serbia (Croatia, Bosnia ...) or vice versa in UEFA or FIFA competitions in the last 20+ years.

      Delete
    4. Oh, and you don't know much about history and politics when comparing Switzerland and Germany to ex Yugoslavia countries.

      Delete
    5. I really can't understand people who still making problems about political shit... that was 20 years ago..... man balkan war is 20 years ago... should the Dutch also stay complaining about a German referee? This should have nothing to do with that.....a referee should, and is always neutral....and the referees who are there now have nothing to do with this shit 20 years ago, so why we should make problems about apointing a referee from Slovenia to a Serbian team, that's not fair!

      Delete
    6. And by the way..... here you got your answer... as mister Damir Skomina (slovenia) refereed the Euro U21 final in 2007... THE GAME Netherlands-SERBIA on 23th of june

      Delete
    7. Do you have some mental problems? Who is making "political shit"? Certaintly not me, I like all former Yugoslavia nations and I'd be delighted to see Skomina in Belgrade, Bebek in Ljubljana etc. I'm just saying that such appointments won't happen, at least for now. Ok, you found one single youth match, but that's obviously one single exception.

You should point your rage towards people who make appointments, not me, and first of all calm down, fury is bad for your health.

      Delete
    8. Sale, the thing i said was not a personal thing to you, but in general :-)

      Delete
    9. Both are right IMO. Skomina could theoretically officiate in Belgrade and he is experienced and great referee and very likely would do good job. However probably its advisable not to make such delegations. Its also the language, maybe not completely fair that referee understands every word (maybe insults too) of one side and not the other. Not critical argument though.

      Delete
    10. I'm certain that Skomina or any other top referee is completely neutral, but you cannot imagine how many supporters, even clubs of supporters of teams like Crvena zvezda, Hajduk Split etc. are there in Slovenia. It was a single country not so long time ago and you cannot erase all the traditions over night. So yes, I can understand the practice of non apppointing, even though I'm not defending it, as said.

    4. So, if I get this right, FIFA sent all men as VAR to the Women's World Cup because there were no qualified women, and four months later, miraculously, they find Bibiana Steinhaus and assign her as VAR? Steinhaus was not retained as VAR after the group stage, FIFA preferring to employ men.
FIFA pretended that they had no qualified female VARs for the WWC, which is true only if you ignore the qualified women who were ignored (another that comes to mind is Christina Unkel, who has MLS experience as VAR and a long FIFA career). And now, if the idea is to use the U-17 WC to train VARs, what's the point of sending 40 year-olds?
Truly, I don't understand FIFA assignment policies.

  10. Some words on Mateu's performance in the APOEL - Ajax game.

Though he started the game with quite a relaxed optic, it ended with his usual unique and expressive gestures - he had the control from the first to last whistle, players always responded well to him. Not just players: he 'connected' well with the Ajax coach at +93' and calmed him down. Such presence might give you the presence of the referee who would "do the players a few favours", but not the case. Three correct SPA cautions in the formative stages were part of a convincing disciplinary control; two softer cautions (reckless elbow/arm and rather careless studs tackle - the latter valuable though for balancing) were joined by seven correct YCs, including a heavy standing leg tackle 2nd YC (SFP was in sight there). Penalty correctly not given for a normal (trifling) football contact by APOEL GK at 88'.

In summary - very good performance by the Spaniard.

  11. Correct penalty by Orsato in Zagreb, VAR confirmed.
Now a possible penalty in del Cerro game for deliberate handball, game was allowed to continue by VAR.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 27': Possible handball penalty for Bern not given without OFR. My first impression is, that it should have been a penalty, because the arm moved towards the ball.

  13. Great onside call by AR2 confirmed by VAR in Zagreb at Dinamo's second goal.

    1. If I'm not wrong, ball was touched by defender, so this was the reason of NO FLAG, otherwise I think it was offside...

      Delete
    2. Yes you are correct, but well seen by Orsato and AR. At first it looked like clear offside.

      Delete
    3. https://www.goalstube.online/338Yes, the attacker didn't touch the ball, it was the defender. (I made the video slow-mo -
the trajectory of the ball didn't change when it passed the attacker's head. But we can't be sure about the hair. ;))

  14. Orsato near perfect imo so far.
    Del Cerro too lenient.

  15. Very easy going game for Makkelie in first 35 minutes. Then it started to heating up. 2 correct, stonewall YCs, and one clearly missed YC for Young Boys in 41-42 minute. Very harsh fouls on Serbian best player Marko Marin. One wrongly given foul.
About potential penalty in 26' - it could be given. No intention to play the ball - therefore I believe VAR confirmed decision on the pitch.

    1. Concerning the handball, at the moment arm touched the ball the defender lost balance a bit after push in the back by YB attacker.

  16. Again very harsh foul on Marin, and again same player that escaped YC in first half. This would be his second.

  17. Penalty after VAR in Berne. Penalty not wrong but I‘m not sure if an OFR was necessary because the Swiss striker lets himself go quite easily after minimal contact...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me not a clear penalty because there is not much contact. So for me OFR not necessary and 'no penalty' a right decision.

      Delete
    2. Exactly my thoughts however if there‘s an OFR penalty is the expected decision but again play on should have been supported by Kamphuis

      Delete
    3. I agree, hardly a clear mistake to not award the penalty. So a wrong perception by Makkelie would be the only explanation for an OFR.
Even with the OFR, it would have been acceptable to not award the penalty IMO - but penalty is also not wrong.

      Delete
    4. VAR procedure is a real mess. No one knows how to implement it properly! I read here million times that referee is called for an OFR only when there is OBVIOUS MISTAKE! This wasn't the case - the decision on the pitch was supportable, it wasn't clear mistake. It was minimum touch, but the player fell as he was heavily injured. Disgrace. This was very crucial decision for the final outcome for qualification for CL. It can worth 15-20 million euros. I hope it will not.

    6. Obvious mistake or missed incident. So it is possible that Makkelie rewatched it because he did not see the situation well. For me penalty was a correct decission.

      Delete
    7. Exactly the opposite debate about Italian team and Orsato in Zagreb. Handball in 39'. despite the short distance, hand not in natural position with movement to block the ball. Still, no VAR intervention.

      Delete
    8. I cant yet find the replay, but here is screenshot of the situation.

    9. I just saw the highlights of the matches this morning and my personal opinion is that VAR should have supported the decision of Makkelie. This is not a clear and obvious penalty, ofcourse if penalty was awarded you can support that decision also. I think AR1 had a good view on the situation. The handball in Orsato match, deliberate is not in the law any more, now it's about natural or unnatural position of the arms. For me this is natural, and also because the defender is trying to avoid the contact by pulling his arm back close to his body. Correct from VAR to support play on.

      Delete
    10. Deliberate still is in the law:
"It is an offence if a player:
deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, including moving the hand/arm towards the ball"

      Delete
  18. I could only watch last 20' of Del Cerro Grande in Olympiacos-Krasnodar.

Seems that the only 2 YC of the game were issued in the 3rd goal's celebration.

  19. http://static-3eb8.kxcdn.com/documents/822/164203_210819_Circular_17_LoG_Laws_clarification_2019_20_EN.pdf

IFAB Circular 17 - Released today.

So if I'm not wrong, the chance to disallow a goal directly by VAR for deliberate handball is not mentioned, therefore I would say strongly condemned. There is always the need of OFR. That's my opinion as well. Handballs are not factual decisions. Referee must always see whether he agrees or not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now it's also clear that UEFA gave instructions that are clearly against IFAB's vision regarding execution of penalty kicks.

VAR HAS TO intervene if GK saves a penalty while having both feet off the line in the moment of PK execution.
