  1. Appointments made before knowing first leg's results.
Both Scottish referees quite unlucky, especially Collum, Oliver as well.

    ReplyDelete
  2. So probably Skomina, Rocchi, Brych, Zwayer, Hategan, Taylor in CL?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, very likely as Turpin and Karasev are appointed in their leagues, and Kuipers and Aytekin are injured.
      Maybe:
      Krasnodar-Olympiakos: Zwayer (Dingert, Stieler)
      Rosenborg-Zagreb: Brych (Dankert, Stegemann)
      Belgrade-Bern: Hategean (Pinheiro, Godinho)
      Ajax-APOEL: Rocchi (Valeri, Fabbri)
      Brugge-Linz: Skomina (Makkelie, van Boekel)
      Slavia-Cluj: Taylor (Attwell, Tierney)

      Delete
    2. Interesting situation with Skomina and his VAR. Slovenian is at moment the only "very big" name without VAR in his country, so for sure we will see foreign VAR for him. The other name in this condition was Mazic but he left UEFA.
Also, very strange that Karasev didn't get an EL play off.

      Delete
    3. What about Turpin,he is not injured and nothing for him too

      Delete
    4. That is also my question, any idea why Turpin would miss play-offs. I don't remember well, were there any mistakes in his last matches?

      Delete
    5. His last UEFA match was Nations League semi-final. It was expected level I think. I remember a correct pk.

Karasev will act as VAR today (Saturday) in Krasnodar-Lokomotiv.

      Delete
    7. OK,but he will also referee Ural-Sochi on Monday, right?

      Delete
    8. Is Kuipers injured? Dutch FA says he is on holiday.

      Delete
    9. He usually is at the start of the season.

  3. Huge game for Peljto with Levnikov as observer!

Ivanov, Buquet, Ekberg, Massa, Sidirópoulos, Letexier, Guida, Stavrev, Pawson, Grinfeld, Vinčič, Peljto got the undecided games

On the other hand, Collum, Gözübüyük, Madden, Oliver and Mažeika were unlucky.

  4. Good appoimtments for both Pawson and Ekberg. Especially the Swedish will face a full stadium and a hostile atmosphere. I wish him every luck.

Sidiropoulos with his old mentor. He needs a good (error-free) performance if he wants to have chances for Euro 2020.

    1. Policeman Ekberg for a duel with Paok president, great delegating :)

    2. However, good game for him, Holland and Flanders.

  5. Another interesting thing. Kabakov, Kovacs, Gestranius, last year debutants in CL and Kabakov and Kovacs selected for u17 world cup without a single match in this qualifications.

    1. Could be a sign they failed test(s) during the last seminar (Turpin and Karasyov too?).

      Delete
    2. I think that Turpin would not be appointed to supercup, even as VAR if he failed the fitness test. It could be, but I really do not wont to believe thata one of the top candidates for this season finals in the season of euro tournament would fail fitness test.

      Delete
    3. I don't think so, they failed the test. Because Kovacs had two games with his regular AR in our league. Why not some surprise from Rosetti, with this referees in the CL playoff. Some games is almost decided. I expect Hategan in a Tuesday game, and not at Krasnodar, maybe in Belgrad, where will be a hit game. But he had a lot of this match in our league, like Craiova -FCSB, FCSB -Dinamo and Craiova -Dinamo. I expect Brych in Prague.

      Delete
  6. Turpin is on a French league match

    ReplyDelete
  7. OT: CTA-RFEF has taken notice of the last IFAB circular and VAR has asked for a penalty kick to be repeated after the keeper advanced not really blatantly. The AR didn't call the infringement.

  8. Soares Dias (POR), da Costa Veríssimo (POR), del Cerro Grande (ESP) and da Silva Pinheiro (POR), why not?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Orel and Irfan in decisive match's?
In my opinion, very bad decision from UEFA group...

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think that Turpin without CL play off is jut a choice without particular reason, maybe the fact that Super Cup was a French assignment must be taken into account. For play off games committee decided to select other referees. I strongly expect Hategan and I'm sure this will be the start of an even higher-level career for him.

First usage of VAR on Greek Superleague today and on the Lamia - Panathinaikos match (Ref Skoulas, VAR Kominis both FIFA).

    1. Thanks for these clips. VAR review for handball is fully correct, it seems like a “serious missed incident”. Penalty and YC (blocking a shot on goal) are correct.

Handball outside the penalty area by goalkeeper: very good decision to let the advantage play, allowing the attacking player to score. In this case, goal should be allowed and keeper only given a YC (in case of NO GOAL, this obviously has to be a RC for DOGSO).

  15. OT:

A lot of questionable decisions in the Fiorentina - Napoli game. But this penalty decision is unbelievable. VAR supported it!!

    1. Valeri (very expert VAR, as you know him) supported this decision by Massa. I really would like to hear many opinions.

      Delete
    2. I’m afraid, but there’s no way that Valeri can support this decision! Even if there is (minimal) contact, this is a very blatant dive and player deserves nothing more but a YC for simulation. If Massa has whistled this, then Valeri has to call him over to make an OFR.

      Delete
    3. For me also a crucial decision but Bastian Dankert was not better today as VAR in Schalke-Bayern München match with two potential (maybe clear) handball situations without intervention.

      Delete
    4. Clear dive. This is a perfect VAR intervention case. But they didn't.

      Delete
    5. @Anonymous: "Maybe clear" sounds like it's correct not to intervene.

      Delete
    6. Just incredible. VAR protocol, as I wrote recently, is a total mess. No one knows anymore what is clear and obvious mistake. If this is not, then I don't know what is. VAR refs can do almost whatever they want - they are free to decide whether to support the call and confirm sometimes wrong decision, or to call for an OFR. I don't know if there is some sort of sanction for them. They MUST NOT have so much power, they are only VAR refs. We witnessed that in some cases VAR ref called the ref for an OFR even when there was not clear and obvious mistake, but he wanted ref to make final decision if there is some suspicion. Also, we witnessed that totally wrong decisions were confirmed, and we saw that at WC, CL and the biggest national leagues. Something is very wrong, and many things have to be improved. Fast, very fast.

      Delete
    7. ESPN has just acquired the rights to Serie A for this season in the US. This game has them wondering if VAR is redundant in Italy.

      Delete
  16. Disaster performance by Tierney and VAR in United Palace. Missed RC for DOGSO and no VAR intervention. Clear penalty for United also not given. The only thing VAR is used for in England is dodgy offside decisions. Honestly, aside of Oliver and Taylor English refereeing is Sunday League level at best.

    1. Lol how is that challenge on Rashford a penalty...
If you check well you will notice is even rashford that foul the opponent...

So stop the hate on English referees bro...
      They are trying their best...
Will all know they are not in level with Italian refs...

Right now var in England is very fast I mean quick decision the ref don't need to go to the TV....

      Delete
    2. English VAR refs are even worse than the refs on the pitch LOL. And that's not easy at all!

      Delete
    3. Im not talking about Rashfords position. I mean the clear grab of Martial. He was wrestled to the ground. Clearest penalty you will ever see. Also the ref was right in front of it no VAR needed for that unless you are blind!

      Delete
    4. Also if his sight was indeed blocked thats what VAR is for! Apparently not in England though...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just to make it clear the goalkeeper fouled the attacker and then the ball bounced into goal. Guida immideatly whistled for penalty, with a half second delay, it would be a super advantage. Luckily home team scored from the spotkick.

Besides of that missed penalty and red card for SFP in minute 8th. It was nearly impossible to spot but in case of VAR it would have been probably given as a penalty for Suduva.

  21. Any Saudi Pro League Appointments?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Belgian Antwerp FC in the meantime fighting AZ with 9 players. Second yellow cards for Mbokani (reckless tackle) as well as Lamkel Ze. Especially the second red card was one you don’t witness very often (excessive goal celebration).

    Replies
    1. How is Sidiropoulos doing?

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately I’m not very impressed... He shows little feeling for the game nor the required portion of tactical awareness and management skills. We now have 15(!) yellow cards in 100’. Also problems with acceptance, especially in the first half.

      Delete
    3. He is not authoritative or assertive with players, we know that. Any crucial error? any decision that would not be justified? There were 8 yellow cards and 2 red cards. I think Mpokani's is a definition of a straight red. Poor management by the fourth official on the sidelines where benches were screaming and jumping.

      Delete
    4. He is not very good at selling his decisions to players..unfortunately....but did he take correct decisions?

      Delete
    5. Now Belgian supporters are trying to invade the pitch and the game is stopped. Atmosphere is hostile, supporters are frustrated. Bad scenes in Antwerp

      Delete
    6. did he take any wrong decision? obviously two red cards could change the results.. the first one is a straight red for me. I have not seen the second one to judge. 6 yellow cards for such heated match are not too many..

      Delete
    7. To answer your question john stav, no crucial mistakes. Every decision can be supported by the book.

      Delete
    8. that is very important. Sidiropoulos is a ref with some capabilities, as for example excellent fitness and playing the advantage- but his assertiveness with play is always a problem. IMO he is better than Grinfield, Kulbakov and a few others but he would never become Skomina, Cuipers, Rocchi etc.

      Delete
    9. @john stav On your 22:05 comment, both red cards were 2nd yellows. So in the end he issued 16 yellow cards (not 6), 1 of which was for Antwerps’s coach.

      Delete
    10. i think Mpokani's one should have been a straight red. Number of cards should not be a problem as far as they are justified.

      Delete
    11. We have justified as backed by the letter of the law and we have justified as in showing a logical, understandable and sensible disciplinary line, together with a preventative attitude. And that’s where I was not quite convinced.
The first question I would ask myself after having shown 16 yellow cards in 100 minutes of football is whether I could have used a different approach.

      Delete
    12. I get you (and I agree with you) but bear in mind that Sidiropoulos struggles with control. So by using a large amount of cards he wanted to keep control of the game. What mark would you give him?

      Delete
    13. I have to say, in Dutch and Belgian media the responses to his performance are positive. The Belgian coach accepted all his decisions, the Dutch medua call it a cool performance.

      Delete
    14. I watched extensive highlights of the game. Sidiropoulos did a great job in a very difficult match. As far as the yellow cards are concerned, all of them were well justified; I would say mandatory. Antwerp should blame themselves for exiting EL. Based on this performance, Sidiropoulos would be still considered to be as a candidate for next euro.

    2. For me, big mistake from Grinfeld and his AR1. YC is surely enough. Lot of protests from the players and the crowd. He will have many problems in second half and he made himself his job much tougher. I dislike Grinfeld's style of refereeing. Before this incident there was one scene: foul for Frankfurt, player tried to continue play fast, but was blocked by an opponent who was standing just in front of the ball and Grinfeld let the play to continue...

      Delete
    3. Yes, he has missed red card for Frankfurt Player because elbow in the direction of the stomach.

  24. And according to a german ticker it is absolutely wrong. I am looking forward to see the incident.

    1. At first it looked worse than it was. GK and Rebic challenged for the ball, GK git it a little bit before Rebic and was hit by his leg. Quite high intensity, but IMO no studs shown, no stretched leg and IMO also no excessice force. For me, it was only reckless, never brutal. GK exaggerated the contact a little bit, maybe Grinfeld was influenced by that.

      Delete
  25. Grinfeld was thrown with a plastic beaker after this decision by a Frankfurt's fan.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think red card for Rebic was wrong. And unfortunatelly, after that red card, Grinfeld looks like he lost the control of the match.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The RC for Frankfurt was IMHO too harsh. I think it was not absolutely wrong because it was a risky challenge against the goalkeeper.I am pretty sure AR1. gave Grinfeld an instruction because he shown the YC with much delay.

  28. Situation to be rewatch too around 30', deliberate elbow into the stomach.

Not the best video, but based on that I would say RC is harsh.
Probably there was contact, but I don't see malicious intention by attacker against keeper, YC maybe in this case could have been enough.
I'm not sure if I can say that but it looks like keeper made it bigger... that would be very unsporting. However, let's wait for better videos.

  38. That's just his lack of alertness. He was very far from the situation, badly positioned and ended up with a completely wrong penalty.

Guida had also problem with foul detection, some very soft decisions, not easy to follow his line.

Overall not a good performance at all. Also Ar1 with a blatant offside mistake in the last 10 mins.

    3. Sorry to repeat myself, but my view re. that penalty (full report just below).

On the decisive penalty - Peljto took a brilliant decision IMO (look at 51:03 replay, 'Steaua' player's left leg trips up Vitória player's right leg). I wonder if the trip was actually even millimetres outside the penalty area, but actually impossible to see that.

Very easy to mistake such situations as simulation: a perfect position, intuition and strong confidence in your own perception were needed to make that call: well done!

  40. I watched in full the Vitória Guimarães - 'Steaua' game handled by Irfan Peljto.

Good performance by the Bosnian in a game where sometimes the crowd (amazing atmosphere in Guimarães!) were too loud in order to hear his whistle - he is an excellent and natural manager of the players on the pitch. Lenient disciplinary control but his simply optimal use of verbal warnings is Peljto's key to success in his matches, which I saw each time I watched him. A caution missed for a reckless elbow was only mistake in that field; very good decision not to sort out a 2nd YC at 14'. He liked to take a wide position sometimes and his strong running / fitness allowed him to do that.

Peljto is ready to handle Champions League group matches, and I think that UEFA will give him that later this year to be honest.

  41. Horrific performance by Orel Grinfeld in Frankfurt. Completely lost in the pitch. Lot of german agressive acts without cautions and phantom red card. Missed red card for german player before good one for Lienard : this tackle is totally shameful. Poor, poor score for Israël referee...

  42. I watched Grinfeld tonight and I must say this was not his night. First RC to harsh IMO, second correct. Although I would not give the RC to Rebic, I would not say it is crucial mistake. On the first it looked very bad, probably from the pitch it also looked like a clear RC. But I cant believe that Grinfeld lost control and was so disrespected by players. After the first RC therr was Eintracht's player who even made a physical contact with Grinfeld to get his attention, after the half time whistle, two Eintracht's player came to Grinfeld to protest and he yelled on them "go, go,...." more than half of a minute before they finaly stoped complaining. Second half was not much better. If performance principle will be used to make appointments for the two matchdays, I think that Grinfeld will get only EL, or even will miss first two matchdays.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Grinfeld ruined a game that was going well for him with a false RC.
47,000 people in the stadium laughed when the goalkeeper did his extra roll on the ground / dive after the minimal contact...until Grinfeld showed the RC. What a dumb decision at that point in the match.

Thereafter, he completely lost control. He poorly managed the situation with additional YCs for Hasebe and the Frankfurt coach for dissent right after the RC. That just escalated the situation. If Grinfeld hadn't shown the (correct) RC to the Strasbourg player in the second half and Frankfurt then won, this match could have escalated to the point of suspension and serious injuries.
And Grinfeld brought it all on himself.

Sorry, nothing Elite to see here.

  44. I am watching now Cero Porteno-River Plate. It is unbelievable what South American referees allow on the pitch. In 20' very dangerous tackle, open foot, close to breaking the leg. Ref was called for an OFR and incredibly he decided to give only YC. That was stonewall RC by any means. I never understood why SA refs allow so many dangerous fouls. Several minutes later he missed YC for a tackle that anywhere in the world would be caution.

  46. I watched the incidents on the 2 RCs (both 2nd YCs) that Sidiropoulos showed. First one, YC for reckless tackle totally justified (1YC was for holding around the neck). 2nd RC showed because player after scoring a goal climbed the fence to celebrate with the fans, totally justified too according to the guidelines but players had difficulty accepting this decision. The tv didn't show us the 1st YC for the player but I think it was for dissent on a penalty appeal.

02:20 indeed Guida could have waited one or two seconds, it would have been an excellent advantage, but I think he whistled because he couldn't expect that defender was about to score an own goal, this was a bad luck... but still a lesson for us, always waiting at least 2 seconds in all situations before whistling a penalty seems to be a good thing.

10:00 bad mistake, referee is late, bad positioning, clean tackle on the ball, luckily not decisive for qualification.

Waiting for the possible RC in 8', I couldn't find full game.

    2. Thank you Mikael, penalty and RC without doubts. One can still say SFP and not VC because defender was trying to play the ball, it was not a deliberate action against opponent, but still to be punished, of course. Referee was very likely following the ball, but if you ask me, it wouldn't have been impossible to see this, in case, it would have been an outstanding call. It is indeed for me clear that you must assign PK and RC, in Champions League I expect similar situations to be detected by VAR.

  51. Almost incredible situation in Cardif-Fulham around 69'. Fulham player was fouled near corner flag besides Fulham's PK area. AR2 missed that and signaled simulation. Referee gave him second YC (first was received 2 minutes before). Non existing simulation near own PK area resulted with second YC. But I am not surprised - it is fully expected in Championship if we have in mind what is going on with the refereeing in Premier League.

It is nearly impossible to understand where the holding exactly ends, maybe on the line, for sure VAR stuff, no big faults for Oliver, if he had the perception it was inside, we must trust him.

      55'
In my opinion penalty could have been whistled, but not VAR stuff, not a clear one, Oliver looked in control of the action.

      90'+2
Once whistled, correct decision, however for sure this could have been a wonderful advantage in case of goal scored by the other attacker. We can underline again the importance of delayed whistle, in many situations waiting two or three seconds before whistling is very important, then you can give advantage or return back to the foul.

0:55-10 seconds and already penalty and YC for pulling shirt I guess.

02:00-IMO clear RC,ref there gives just YC which leads to chaos, massive protest and fights between players.

    03:25-possible penalty?

    1. In my opinion all three supportable decisions.
      1)Obvious pulling for shirt
2)If it wasnt on the line but near the centre of the pitch, it wouldnt have looked so brutal
3)hard to see well from this angle

Very insecure managing and raport in second situation, but i think referee did his best to follow Laws of the game
