  1. So wrong predictions for me this time!
It is interesting to underline that Ghorbal goes in third place game in spite of Al Ahly. The same should be said for Taylor and Real Madrid, but surely the appointment for CAF officials is more particular.
This should suggest that Ghorbal was already planned for third place in all cases, because he didn't get games before.
About Taylor, we can point out that his game was the only one without VAR involvements: maybe not the main reason for the final choice (because you can say that Kovacs did a very good job as well), but surely an argument. I think his game was not at the level of difficulty of the others, but of course this can't be Taylor fault...
The English collects another final in his palmares and I think he can be absolutely proud of his international career. Maybe he will not have the chance for CL final due to English teams and other reasons, but he found another way to get big assignments.

    2. I wanted to write, that it could be difficult to find another FIFA match where a CAF referee had one CAF team - but it actually happened at the CWC 2021 in the 3rd game: N'Diaye also with Al Ahly vs a Brazilian team.

  2. Anthony Taylor:
    - first Englishman with two FA Cup finals
    - UEFA SuperCup
    - UEFA Nations League Finals
    - Fifa Club World Cup

On the other hand, despite of good performances at euro 2020 and wc 2022 he refereed only one KO stage match (!) (ITA-AUT R16, non particular clash).

    Paradox.

    1. Taylor was not the first Englishman to ref two FA Cup Finals, just the first in a very long time. It happened more frequently in the early days of the tournament.

    4. Well, Alfred Stair beat Taylor with 147 years. Francis Marindin by 136 years and Charles Hughes by 127 years. Then you have John Lewis and Arthur Kingscott. Football was played in England before the Premier League came about.

    5. @Davidcrammond Nonsense. That was the reason given when there was just no referees that could be trusted with a cup final. Assume it’ll be Tierney this year which is okay but I dread to think who’s next

    6. I wonder will madley or hooper get one of the finals they have had pretty good seasons
Also possibly Scotts last year but he hasn't had many matches this season

      Delete
    7. Madley, Jones and Hooper are only getting loads of games because the standard is on the floor. I know they have high hopes for Madley but Hooper is the only decent one imo

      Delete
    8. I agree unfortunately there was no forward planning with almost 10 members of the select group retiring over the last 3 years and another 2 this year I'd imagine.

I have been surprised with the amount of matches hooper has received iv never really rated him and I always thought england wis a significantly better referee to jones

Hopefully there will be an improved standard over the next few years when r madley rejoins and welch &Madden join the select group

      Delete
    9. I imagine Marriner will retire this year and Kavanagh seems to have disappeared. And England is definitely better than Jones. I don’t think Welch is far away but Madden won’t reach select group

  3. Taylor made history became the first English referee to handle CWC final since 2000 until now

If anyone wants to watch how to have no control of the match and have no authority just watch last 10 minutes of Aek-Olympiacos and see how Dabanovic performed.

I will not say bad,but horryfing...

Allowing phisycal play, mobbing, nass confrotations and having no control at all.

One of the worst streches of minutes I have ever seen.

    2. 3 cards for Greek semifinal match and no authority??
      I don't think so... 😊
I am not a fan of foreign referees in our domestic league, but Dabanovic had many matches here, and always made good impression on me. And yes, first thing that I think when I hear 'dabanovic' is strong personality.

      Delete
    3. I did not say for whole match, but last 10 minutes...

Players were fighting, there were head 2 head clashes, especially Valbuena and Araujo.
Constant mobbing, pushing and shoving from rest of the players also and to all that, yes only 3 cards is ridiculous.

      Delete
    4. There is a video:
      https://streamable.com/k2eic6

      We have plenty things here:

-dangerous foul by Araujo on Valbuena, then they have their own head 2 head duel, this reminded me of Rui vs Vidal,we all know Brych solved that situation

-then 2 of them have head 2 head foul,I guess they dont like each other 😀

-Valbuena comes to the pitch without ref's permission to stop counter attack

-potential RC for DOGSO,nothing was whistled

-play brought back ,Valbuena is shown YC

-then plenty conflicts,Valbuena Sokratis,Vida,Szymanski, not one of the is warned let alone booked...

      -benches get involved

      -gradually then everything calmes down

Maybe I was a bit harsh in my criticism toward Dabanovic, but still, too passive for my view and too lenient, atleat 2 yellows there needed to be shown, even if that ment sending off Valbuena..

And potential RC,IMO could have been whistled but VAR decided to back Dabanovic.

Result also favoured him,at the end 3-0 and in terms of score not too much to worry about.

      Delete
    5. -Araujo did not foul Valbuena, but still, head 2 head with him is when most refs will show .2 cards

      Delete
    6. That head-on-head foul is shocking, clear Serious Foul Play.

      Delete
    7. If the dogso RC is not whistled, Valbuena MUST be shown a red card for two separate YC offences. First entering the FoP without permission and then stopping a promising attack. This should be basic lotg knowledge.

      Delete
    8. But did he stop the promising attack? I mean, the opponent plays a perfect ball into space. If there's any interference whatsoever that constitutes SPA, surely advantage is applied which then negates the SPA card.

I totally get WANTING to send him off here. It's a cheap and dirty play. But saying a red card here is required and citing basic knowledge is ironic, because if we stick strictly to the LOTG text, there's really not an argument for a second caution here. Illegal re-entry without permission is the only punishable cautionable offence he actually commits.

      Delete
    9. There was no advantage because the referee brought the play back for Valbuena's offence. Thus also SPA should be punished. If referee actually plays advantage there you are right - card is required only for the illegal entry but it doesn't happen in this clip.

  5. Another strong argument for explaining Taylor and Irrati appointment for the final, is that this will be the most watched game of the tournament, of course, so more focus on the experiment about VAR's decisions explanation. A referee English mothertongue and one of the best VAR of the world to ensure that. Let's add that about the other games, FIFA already knew that mostly only refereeing experts would have paid attention on that, indeed I can report that in Itay this detail (the communication by referee during the early games) was never analyzed.

  6. I watch Makkelie at Feyenoord-PSV and FC Twente-Ajax (cup). He's clearly not in his best shape. He is not sharp and makes errors of judgment that I do not know of him. I think the World Cup and his treatment there had quite a big impact. I wonder if he can recover before/in the CL knockout matches. Before the season I saw him as a serious contender for the CL final but in this form that is very far away.

A very long OFR by Ghorbal for a possible penalty to Flamengo.
In my opinion never a clear and obvious mistake.
So far in all games VAR interventions unless Taylor, the English this evening can confirm himself as the only referee not needing VAR...

I thought this was a really disappointing performance by Ghorbal. The last mass confrontation in 90'+11 shows how he completely failed imo. There have already been 3 or 4 "smaller" confrontations before with players pushing each other and not a single YC was shown but if you let the players do what they want without any consequences... well. No prevention, no control whatsoever.
I'm also not really convinced on the penalty he has given live without OFR but I'd need to rewatch this to fully comment on it.

But, at least to me, I was quite convinced that Ghorbal’s mark would be ≈4 today and a de facto repeat of the Al-Jassim third place disaster would occur. You can’t demotivate a human being to the extreme and expect him to referee well. Another good referee humiliated by FIFA on the top stage :/.

    5. Just watching Al Ahly vs. Flamengo now - incredible scene just happened at 30' where Ghorbal's knowledge of the LotG is overruled by the Egyptian team's players! De Arrascaeta is cautioned in a poorly managed scene for hitting out at Abdelmoniem, who stays down and recieves treatment. When the latter gets up, Ghorbal orders him off the FoP - rightly IMO, as the Al Ahly player wasn't really hurt and took an exaggerated amount of time. Having done this, Ghorbal then gets mobbed a bit by Al Ahly players arguing (incorrectly) that the Algerian ref *cannot* order him off, because the opponent recieved a sanction. Ghorbal then changes his mind and gives up; Abdelmoniem remains on the FoP for the freekick to be taken. Not good...

      Delete
    6. The lack of action against DtR - Not Retreating in the game, even by modern FIFA standards, was really quite extraordinary... heating the game up further and further each time, in addition to the Algerian's lack of firmness and high no. of interventions, ultimately lead to Ghorbal losing control of the match. Poor performance.

  18. Ghorbal is all gestures and no substance.
I can't believe the comments that some made that put him directly in the Grand Final. As if this actor was a great referee. When in reality he is nothing more than your run of the mill typical CONCACAF referee. An actor on the pitch who is a manager and not a referee. But hey, long live modern football and its modern pseudo referees, right?
