    I guess that there is a global strategy involving both CL and EL to appoint new development referees in the first leg matches (Guzubuyuk, Massa, Gil Manzano, Mariani, etc) and top level ones for the return leg (Orsato, Turpin, Vincic). It's a way to prepare the future

    I was expecting Turpin in Machester, he was in factmy first guess here, but I don't understand Orasto in PSV-Sevilla, this game doesn't really need him, even more now considering the first leg result. I am wondering what scared the Committee that the things could have gone out of control there. Very good appoinment for José María Sánchez.

    Orsato in that game is the confirmation that appointments had been made before first legs, and the Italian will officiate just as "training" for his next CL assignment. I think that it is good to give him a game before, because he can keep in form.
    Del Cerro with a second game, confirmation that he was a replacement in Braga and committee didn't change him for this match in Berlin.
    Vincic in Rome is a more sonorous appointment than the original referee for Slazburg, Nyberg.
    Turpin in Manchester gives us a clue of the plans that committee seems to have for Mariani, appointed for first leg, and then you have a so big name for the second tie.
    Hernandez Hernandez seems to be at the very top of Cat. 1 at moment, but withouit a chance to become fifth Spanish Elite, somebody should retire (Del Cerro? Mateu?) before this possible step.
    About Kružliak, decent assignment, I'm still curious about the assessment of Bayern Inter handball in group stage, but very good for him to get EL and not ECL.
    Sanchez Martinez for Nantes - Juventus reasonable choice. Let's remember in first leg the originally appointed referee was Sidiropoulos, the injured (reported on the blog), so two Elite for this game, but two low (for different reasons) Elite,
    So far we have all Elite appointed unless Kulbakov.
    Of course we can rule out Karasev for known reasons, Hategan for his particular situation (good that he appears as AVAR), and Sidiropoulos, injured as reported. So we can maybe draw the conclusion that Pinheiro wasn't planned at all in this set of games, and he got the match in Turin as "extra" replacement, among the referees who didn't attend the course.

      Of course I must clarify that I consider the three missing big Elite Taylor Makkelie and Marciniak already planned for a CL return game. So in this context Kulbakov would be the only missing but maybe a chance for ECL next round....

      De Burgos in Union Berlin - Ajax, and Gil Manzano replaces him as VAR in Basel - Trabzonspor. To be honest, but maybe there are aspects we don't know about, it would have been by far easier to send directly Gil Manzano as replacement in Berlin as main referee and nothing else.

      For me, Hernandez Hernandez is currently the best Spanish ref, and the best since Mejuto Gonzalez. I also liked Dauden Ibanez very much. I think, Hernandez is head and shoulders above Gil Manzano, and hope, his qualities will be more appreciated by Rosetti and co. in the near future, and he will be rewarded accordingly.

      In colour television era, García-Aranda IMO. He had a great style. Mateu also, but he regrettably de facto failed in two of his three big tournaments.

    RC for DOGSO in Nantes, handball close to goal line.
    Once whistled the handball, fully correct RC. One could discuss about the position of the arm, but in such scenario with an empty net and the ball coming, there are strong arguments to say always penalty.

      Was this given in the field or after OFR? Surely not a clear handball… Chefren, the argument about the location of the handball has no basis in the Laws. It is disappointing to me there sometimes seems to be a different standard for handball when it just happens that the ball is going into the goal.

    Certainly not a mistake but also not a 100% yc, esp second yc. I much more liked World Cup where refs did everything possible to keep 11 against 11 in every match. Just my opinion, again I understand that its not a mistake but now this match is basically finished as is Nantes vs Juve tie.

    Orsato lost it in Eindhoven. 2 red cards in the last minute. Only 4 minutes added time is way too low. Also a fan attacked the Sevilla keeper in the added time

    Not a good performance by Orsato in the last minutes. Red card for PSV was a very strange moment, having the hand at the pocket waiting to give it. And the additional time really wasn't enough, after so much delay in the match, and giving a red card during the additional time to the bench. Before this, he wasn't bad (not great though) but the last minutes really were... strange.

    Orsato was never good in managing the added time, I think this is his weakest aspect, maybe the only one. For some reasons, he has always a certain hurry to whistle the end. I noticed that in many serie A games over the years. Having said that, nobody could have guessed such an end for this game.

      I agree aswell. Not sure if Turpin would give it again. I've seen he adapted a 'big match' mentality by not giving a clear YC against a Foul on Martinez, so I would expect soft penalties also not to be given with that mindset.

      I think most Elite referees would not whistle it live tbh. Especially in a big match like this, where the referee can apply a much higher standard of physicality, to allow the game to flow.

    Another clear red card missed when a player clearly shoots the ball with full force at an opponent who has been fouled. So tired of this disgusting behaviour not being punihed. Last time I saw it was in the WC with the Argentinian player. Horrible behaviour, a sane person wouldn't do that.

      I wonder if the ball needs to hit the head in order for it to be given as a RC. I also think it was on purpose and the force is high and unnecessary, so technically it should be a RC. Problem is, there is no such precedent in the past, so the referee would 'make it about himself' by giving red.

      Dont get me wrong. For sure when a match get out of the hand with multiple mass confrontations the players are the one to blame. In this case mostly Ajax. But there is also a role for the referee and his role was not good.

      IMO Ajax players were to blaim, but De Burgos could have avoided this easily. Ajax had no chance to win it and their frustation was clear. Why would he give 4 minutes of added time and add even more time. Just be smart, feel the game and end the match

    Fully agee. Overall, good performance by de Burgos, but he still need more KO stage expertise to feel when a match is ended. The long extra time is something comming from la Liga, but he need to know when to switch the competition

    Referees know that every strong decision against Italian teams or PSG can have negative consequences for themselves. Roberto Rosetti tries to keep the Italian media on his side. This can lead to more and more "smart" (or rather: not fair) referees making 50/50 decisions in favor of these teams. If only to protect their own career. Pretty worrying.

    Referee Turpin tried very hard to help Barcelona yesterday. At the beginning of the match, a clear foul on Rashford is not whistled, and on the other hand, a questionable tackle by Bruno and immediately a penalty.

    What a game for Javier Iglesias Villanueva in Elche - Betis with 4 penalties and two RCs (actually three, but one was given to a substitute player for dissent). All but the first PK were against the home team.

      I am not too convinced about the first PK. Yes, there is some contact, but it doesn't seem to be clear tripping or a clear stamp and is quite possible, that the attacker goes down deliberately.
      And calling that reckless is clearly wrong IMO.
      The next three situations are clearly correct and the last PK is at least acceptable (with some arguments for a natural arm position).

      We are really straying from best practices for VAR in some competitions. There's absolutely no way that first incident should be looked at in 25% speed and then a freeze on the point of contact. OF COURSE it's going to look like a foul then. That incident needs to be seen in full speed to determine if it's clearly wrong.

      Usaref, maybe you remember your answer about the clear (for me) handball in Eintracht - Napoli, now you said something similar in this topic, regarding this Spanish game. Just want to say that Italy and Spain have a very similar approach about handballs, once you can detect them with VAR, a touch by arm in a not natural position, should be always a penalty because there aren't contrary arguments.
      Also, the fact that it is impossible for the referee on the pitch could be an argument, but basically handballs were, are and will be always difficult to spot, so? Once you have technology what should you do, if one fully agrees with your point of view could even say that VAR is not needed in the games...

      No, not at all Chefren. First, there are contrary arguments--as in the Eintracht/Napoli case, I made one of them.

      But more importantly on this point and this incident, I'm talking about global best practices for VAR. The below passage is literally a quote from IFAB:

      If Spanish and Italian VARs are doing it differently and using slo-mo as a matter of course to determine fouls, then they are doing it wrong. This isn't a difference of opinion. It's corrupting the intention of VAR protocols and procedures.

      In this case, the slo-mo can be used to show the factual existence of contact. But if slo-mo is being used to determine whether or not that contact rises to the level of a careless foul, it's being used incorrectly.

    Today, Sunday the 26th of February will see the return of referee Chris Beath in the middle of an A-League match. This is his first game since a disappointing World Cup where he only refereed one match. The world cup ended in December so it's been a long time since he last refereed a match. His last A-League match was on the 29th of October, Brisbane Roar v Melbourne Victory.
    His match today is:

    Question I have for our Spanish readers and writers.

    What do you think about Alberola Rojas as referee?

    Imo,he has one of the worst styles in history of officiating,with his verbal warnings and all the talking...

    That style is the problem in ligue that has so much fiery teams and crowds.

    I mean ,I also dont want to see 15 cards a match,but if you need to show card,show it...

    He does the exact opposite,he tries to manage the game with his gestures and talking,a.k.a Lahoz style.

    But Lahoz is ref who adapts to every match,Rojas does not adapt,he has 1 style only,and that is to be as lenient as he could be...

    He is young and has a lot to learn,but imo,so far one of the most overated refs...

    Just my opinion,watching him handle some matches can be very frustrating.

      Kinda agree. He was the golden boy of the Arminio/pre-2018 CTA, where technical director Manuel Díaz Vega had a doctrine of pushing primarily young and physically ultra-fit referees. Some of these referees pushed under this system like Gil Manzano have reached the top, others like Vicandi Garrido failed. Technically average but physically athletic referees were regularly promoted over good managers or technically good referees with average physical condition.

      Proof that things changed after 2018 was that Velasco Carballo chose 41-year old Soto Grado to become FIFA over Alberola, or that last year CTA-RFEF promoted two referees that were 39 years old, they don't look at the referees' ID card anymore to decide promotions or badges. Alberola might get one of the badges but I'm skeptic he would go far ahead in UEFA. It's his sixth season in LaLiga yet he rarely gets big games.

      Alberola Rojas hast an outstanding Natural authority in my opinion while his decision making ist also okay I would say. He Sometimes hast tonbe careful Not to geht very arrogant but in my.opinion a top ref👍

    Now an incorrect restart of play from Stuart Atwell after a head injury in the 53rd minute. He gave a drop ball restart from where the injury occurred instead of where the ball was when play was stopped.
