  1. Unless shocking RM defeat, I think the final will go to Ghorbal.

  2. Ghorpal now the only referee in cwc didn't referee any match

  3. Why Juan you write this Ghorpal now is the best referee in Africa and refereed 2 matches in wc 2022 such as Taylor and this is the 3 rd time he referee in cwc i don't agree with you juan

    1. If RMA is in the final, forget about Taylor.
      It's that simple.

    2. First, Kovacs will not make the final whoever is there because he has the semifinal.

      Taylor is better than Ghorbal?
      Yeah.
      Does Taylor deserve the final?
      Yeah.
      Does Ghorbal deserve the final?
      Yeah.

This is the third club world cup for Ghorbal, this indicates that there is not enough trust (apart from him) towards the CAF referees.
I don't think they brought him to Morocco without being considered for the final.

After the Barton disaster, Matonte and Kovacs automatically ruled out and Ning out, Taylor VS Ghorbal.

I don't think Collina breaks the rule with the RMA in the final, so Ghorbal candidate No.1

  4. If real Madrid vs flamengo in the final Ghorpal will be the referee any other conditions Taylor will referee the final

    1. But what would be the message behind such an assignment? African referees (including Ghorbal) were not good enough to handle ANY of the 16 knockout matches during the World Cup some weeks ago but good enough to appoint them directly for the Club World Cup final as the first game afterwards?

      Delete
    2. Ghorpal deserved to referee Croatia vs Japan in 16 round knockout but politics helped elfath to referee this match

      Delete
    3. @Juan: That's exactly what I wanted to suggest indirectly: If FIFA really was that unhappy with the performances of their CAF referees during the World Cup, they could have selected another promising referee for the Club World Cup instead. The only logical solution to appoint a CAF World Cup referee would be the specific tournament constellation: Theoretically, each match could involve a CAF team. Applying the confederation neutrality rule, one could not appoint that young unexperienced referee for the first-round game Al Ahly - Auckland City, both second-round games Wydad Casablanca - Al-Hilal and Seattle Sounders FC - Al Ahly and maybe even for both potential semi-final games, the third-place game and the final. In that case, FIFA could only save him for the third-place game (and break the conferation neutrality rule there) - but such an appointment would be "too much" for a prospective World Cup referee at the moment.

  5. Perhaps Ghorbal was initially slated to ref a R16 match in Qatar (maybe CROvJPN?) before being replaced late.

  6. In as much as Taylor is a top Uefa referee same as Ghorbal as a top Cad referee and he has also been in three consecutive CWC games compared to Taylor or I think he should deserve the final so I don't agree with Juan on this although it is your personal opinion too if Real Madrid doesn't get to final other wise Taylor can get the final

    ReplyDelete
  7. As it will seem very unfair if Taylor get the final with Real Madrid on it.

  8. I fully agree on the fact to give recognition and visibility to referees belonging to minor confederation, but come on, the neutrality confederation rule is really a non-sense. Will an english referee be more respectful toward a spanish team than a brasilian one ? If we want follow ONLY meritocracy the neutrality rule should be delete. Furthermore I agree with Peter, CAF referee didn't demonstrated good performances and reliability at latest WC. To me the should be afforded in a more structured way, making AFC, CAF, OFC and CONCAF referees able to grow and to improve like their colleagues in Europe and South America, promoting full and continuous exchanges, common seminar, trainings and domestic matches in the major leagues.
The same means for low level country within Europe: I'm convinced that a referee from San Marino will be regularly appointed in Serie A or even in Serie B could compete with name like Massa, Mariani, Di Bello, Guida....

    ReplyDelete
  9. Look, my prediction is that FIFA will not break the confederation rule, but if there is a time to do it, than now it is, when UEFA has 2 representants. I don't want to talk about meritocracy, but yes, it would be nice to see Taylor with Real, I vote pro.
However, one thing that nobody is talking about from what I read is the fact that at this edition we have 6 refeees for 7 games, while at the last edition there were 5 referees for 8 games. Have you noticed that the Fifth Place game was cancelled? It is quite a difference.

  15. Clear penalty whistled by Kovacs in the early minutes, maybe missed YC for DOGSO?

    ReplyDelete
  16. 15 minutes and already two crucial decisions spot on by Kovacs.
Now YC for simulation, a fantastic call, the Romanian is very focused.
    To follow, YC for protests.
The issue with laser is indeed big and unacceptable, but it is impossible to inspect all people joining the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  17. WOW I must say excellent spot by VAR in 45'+6, with the focus on a possible hit on head, Kovacs was called to OFR for a foul made by another player from behind (low contact), and I would also say very dangerous, mandatory YC. Fully correct decision and YC for reckless challenge with second penalty to Al Hilal. This was impossible to see, but surely one can discuss about the possibility to stop game by Kovacs because the attacker had been hit in his head (nevertheless, not deliberate in my opinion and rather unlucku circumstance).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Very good intervention by Martínez Munuera IMO. I was totally focused on the head collision and missed the stamp. Correct PK + 2YC after OFR, Brazilians are visibly angry.

    1. Agree! Clear evidence of both foul + reckless.

    2. Instructions might be different, but this would have been a good opportunity to explain why this was a foul by Gerson and not by David Luiz during the public announcement.
I read a liveticker claiming it was a foul by Luiz and wondering why the 2nd YC was given...

      Delete
  19. Very good Kovács so far, as Chefren said very alert from the first whistle in a challenging match. Besides non-YC at first penalty (okay you can say it was DOGSO deliberate in theory but not for me) disciplinary optimal. By far the most interesting thing is his management/acceptance of Flamengo players, most of all the instant booking to Gabriel Barbosa for ignoring him (it was a brave choice and could have backfired). He was very focused on always 'staying on top' of the Brazilian side's players and succeeded.

Now after the two penalties given, the Romanian may well have a big challenge to keep that up in the 2H.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Another scene: how should we assess this potential 'follow-thru' SFP incident?

    https://files.catbox.moe/h4nx1w.mp4

    ReplyDelete
  21. BTW crucial incidents like red cards and penalties, very often with VAR involved, are definitely more likely to happen in FIFA games than UEFA. This can be explained at first with a quite different use of VAR, but as for the rest, I came to conclusion that European players in UEFA games act differently than most of the teams from other confederations. They are more careful, knowing that there is VAR, while in the other confederations we have still the "old football" (I mean, without VAR) for some aspects. What do you think?

    1. Deservedly so, terrible reaction by Flamengo against the officials at the end, they deserved to lose and the ref was spot on. Kovács was very good throughout, the hard 2H never really materialised. Any reason why he can't referee EL Final this season? ;)

      Delete
    2. I didn't watch the game, but I am glad that it was a good performance.
The UEL final will be in Budapest, and... you know... better to avoid. This would be the only reason that comes in my mind.
But how about the UEFA Nations League Final? I would say he is among the favourites in this moment, without Orsato, Taylor, Makkelie or the 3 Spaniards available. Turpin also a serious contender. Early prediction: 4 out of 5 from: Turpin, Kovacs, Siebert, Oliver, Jovanovic. I ruled out Marciniak because I see him in pole-position for the UCL final.

      Delete
    3. Why would it be better for Kovács to avoid a final in Budapest? He's ethnic Hungarian, Hungarian is his 1st language, he has Hungarian citizenship etc. It would probably be his only chance to referee at the National stadium because he can't referee Hungary or any Hungarian club teams.

  23. If hilal vs ahli in the final Taylor England will referee the final / if hilal vs real Madrid in the final Ghorpal Algeria will referee the final

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think very good performance by Kovacs in a hot game with an unexpected outcome. Not a big issue the OFR if you ask me, VAR is there for such incidents, referee must be praised for his alerteness during the full game. Nevertheless, I noticed that by having this approach, the Romanian was a bit unnatural, if compared to the referee we see in UEFA games. Not a big problem, maybe this was a consequence of his choice to be in full control of this clash from the beginning, without losing even the minimum detail. A scene in the early minutes of first half, when a player from Flamengo tried to shake his hand, and he refused, must be surely highlighted. I think he did that because he was afraid that action would have undermined his authority, becoming too friendly under the eyes of Brazilians.

Now, coming to final, for me Ghorbal has the required skills to make it, after so many calls at this tournament in the years and the missing game in KO stage at WC. Even in case of Flamengo in final I would have said the same. It is expected to see this choice, another one would be rather surprising, but let's see.

    ReplyDelete
  25. But if ahli vs hilal in the final English referee Taylor will referee the final ahli in Africa and Ghorpal from Africa that's not possible

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would give Kovacs a Nations League SF, specifically NED-CRO.
I would not give him any European final, instead I would put him as the fourth referee in the UCL final.
    That is my analysis.

The Nations League final would not be bad for him, but I prefer to take it "slowly" thinking about the UEL final 2024

Marciniak for this year's final in Turkey.

I have no idea who can be in Budapest, it depends on the teams.
But I think of Jovanovic or Scharer

And for UECL the names of Umut Meler and Letexier come to mind.

    We will see

  27. Good morning my friends in your opinions who will referee CWC final ?

    ReplyDelete
  28. After the referee audio was finally working properly yesterday, I think it's also fair to make a first assesment about it. Surely I'm not the only one who expected... more? All Kovacs said was "Decision is penalty, YC to Number 20", this doesn't help anyone. Making the TV symbol and pointing to the penalty spot seems to be the simpler and also easier to understand thing in this case. Like Philipp pointed out in a comment above, a simple explanation WHY the decision is a penalty would help way more. I get that it might be difficult to explain a decision in the heat of the moment + not in your native language but the way they're currently trying it out is pretty useless imo.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, in this way it is useless. I also think that it is not necessary that the referee explains the decision in all cases. Everybody understands an OFR because a foul occurred outside of the penalty area for example also without further explanation. So in my opinion it would be enough if the referee could just use it in cases that are complex (with multiple things to check for example) or hard to see if you just watch the video (the foul yesterday for example). But then, a few more words should be spoken. Yesterday it would have been nice and useful, if Kovacs explained that the challenge was that one by Gerson and that it has to be judged as reckles and therefore a YC must be given.

      Delete
    2. It was verrry naïve to expect more, with respect. Because it would have been a huge, huge revolution and totally out of kilter with 'Refereeing in Paralysis' era post-2010 and has carried on unabaited (another very exciting WC means nothing will change for many, many more years).

The speed which UEFA/FIFA instantly acted against a random third category official who tried to create his own communication channel, bypassing MSM ('Frappart was there on merit'; 'Mateu was attention-seeking in NEDARG') and official competitions, should say enough. KNVB are stopping their post-match interviews (which are very good IMO), iirc? And Roberto reminded anybody in doubt "the best interviews are the ones you never give".

The announcements only exist to take some pressure off the 'VAR isn't fair on fans in the stadium' argument, ensuring that they still turn up and cheer on their teams etc. It was hardly a mortal danger but better to be proactive, for competition organisers / broadcasters / clubs. UEFA had a very interesting experiment at EURO 2004 (to be explored on euro04ref, ofc ;)) to try and bring referees more into the 'football media sphere' and IMO it was very beneficial for 'us'/fans, but it was never really tried again for one reason or another (okay Les Arbitres for 2008, but this was relatively 'harmless' as UEFA could put in what they wanted).

VAR + encouraging mediocrity suits the powerful clubs, competition organisers and broadcasters, and they were never realistically going to threaten this current status quo in any way.

      Delete
    3. KNVB have indeed stopped their post match interviews since the restart of the season. They were often excellent & informative. I've heard from a couple of the younger refs there the TV company had reached the stage of knocking on their door literally 30 seconds after they had come in asking when they were coming out to apologise for their mistakes, which is bang out of order. Seems they had gone from being referees just explaining the LOTG and why decisions were made to being quite demeaning towards the refs.

    1. 50' Spot on! That was SFP and the referee realised that there was no advantage here because it was a SFP.
The only dilemma is whether the referee spotted the SFP himself or one of the assistants spotted it.

63' Very brave decision IMO correct one. The referee first brilliantly ran the counter attack of the visiting team, and then took a good position at the incident itself.

      Your thoughts?

Just to add, I think this is 3rd match in UYL for the young Serbian referee. Definitely a good sign and a name to watch out for.

    2. Check the YC for Caicedo in 58'. Clearly excessive force, but unclear if he stamped Juventus's Hasa on the boot or he stepped on the ground. I saw from just an angle online but I'd rather say that it was the first one, a RC would have been absolutely expcted.

      Delete
    3. Yes, Milanović even made his UECL GS debut this season (Molde-Shamrock Rovers), other times I watched him (Eternal Derby in 2022 Serbian Cup final, CZEENG U21) he left a good impression on me.

Another RC given in UYL today, by Igor Pajač in AZ-Eintracht (DOGSO): https://streamin.me/v/b389a7c6

    4. Another game with two RCs - Hajduk-Shakhtar, referee Damian Sylwestrzak (POL)

88' RC for HAJ5 (VC), I think that there was also a YC for SHA6 given offscreen (VC with negligible force), as you can see the referee putting his YC back at his shorts pockets

      90+5' 2YC for SHA8 (reckless challenge)

    5. Hm, if you put the 2nd YC for Juventus and the DOGSO for Frankfurt next to each other, there is not too much difference: A bit of contact by the defender and the attacker going down easily.
Still, there is a (2nd) YC for the attacker in one scene and a RC for the defender in the other one.
No real consistency there and I have difficulties to accept both decisions at the same time.
Maybe play on would actually have been the best solution in both cases?

      Delete
    6. My opinions:
About Milanović absolutely correct RC for SFP and very well detected I think by another official, otherwise he would have stopped game before, no advantage possible in a straight RC scenario, unless a very clear goal scoring opportunity.
The YC for simulation is very harsh, but not a mistake.
In my opinion this was a PLAY ON, no foul, but I don't see arguments for a clear simulation. Better simulation than penalty, but surely if simulation is second card, it sounds quite harsh. Nevertheless, one can't talk about a 100% crucial mistake. In both incidents, referee with a very interesting body language, a name to follow.
Pajač: indeed for me, as Philipp wrote, quite similar to the previous incident, so better to play on, but once whistled, one agrees with RC, quite clear DOGSO. A more evident foul was required to make this call, but again, not a real mistake.
Sylwestrzak: very clear RC for violent conduct as reaction, but indeed there was also something by opponent, who was booked. Second YC for reckless challenge seems correct as well, maybe even "orange" foul...

      Delete
    7. I'm going to take a slightly different approach on some of this.

First, great SFP spot by Milanovic. And I think it's around 50/50 whether someone told him to stop or it just took a full second for him to realize there could be no advantage as he processed it was SFP. The idea that an AR told him "stop it's red" and he did that fast is... very tough. I think it's more likely he just needed a moment to realize advantage couldn't be applied.

Second, the simulation call is brilliant, not harsh. The Juventus player quite literally bends and throws his hip into the opponent. He is trying to show the referee something that did not occur. It's the definition of simulation!

Conversely, I don't think the Frankfurt player fouls his opponent but I also don't think it's a blatant dive either. Sometimes players come together with trifling contact and it is best to play on. So I wouldn't compare the two plays all that much. In the Juventus scenario, the player is trying to cheat. In the AZ one, the player is asking for a soft penalty. A sophisticated referee can discern the difference.

And that leads me to an important point... the referees and their positioning. Look at Milanovic. He's RIGHT THERE. He knows what he saw and isn't guessing. He has full authority over the situation. Meanwhile Pajac is sprinting to catch up and get the right angle. He has neither when he makes his call. He is, effectively, guessing. And he guesses poorly. But once he whistles he knows he has to go red.

Milanovic and Pajac are night and day in this situations. Milanovic should be praised. Pajac should be answering a lot of questions from his observer.

As for Sylwestrzak, I think he has the VC right. Even if it's an open hand and glancing, it's simply too much of a swing to be excused as anything but VC once it makes contact above the shoulders. On the 2CT... well, it seems obviously correct but you've got to ask yourself if it could have been avoided simply by whistling full time 10 seconds earlier. If he put +4 and he was willing to end it at +4:25, did a red card really need to happen at 4:20 for a foul at 4:10? Hindsight is 20/20 and all but he essentially played 8 extra seconds or so just so someone could get sent off. That doesn't look good to certain powers that be. This would be a very unsavory end, for example, in a UCL match.

      Delete
    8. Sylwestrzak: fourth game in Youth League, fourth very well refereeed. Red card for VC is not in doubt. Sorry, but writing that a red card in 90+4 minutes looks bad is like writing that a yellow card for reckless in the 1st minute looks bad. There is no wrong minute for the right decision. The young Polish referee promises to be the second Marciniak IMO
Milanovic: very good decision red card, second yellow for simulation is unacceptable. We have contact between the defender and the attacker, the attacker falls naturally, there is no simulation. Play on, nothing else.
Pajac: In my opinion, there is no foul in this situation. Play on, just like in the Milovanovic match.

      Delete
    9. You put words in my mouth, Krokus73. I didn't say that giving a late 2CT was bad or wrong. I said that the time management was bad. My point is that if he was going to end the game IMMEDIATELY after the 2CT with no restart, then surely playing time was over BEFORE the foul was committed. Sylwestrzak has to be more aware there. Either end it right at +4 (and the foul never happens) OR extend time to +5 to demonstrate that there was additional playing time left. Yes, it's simply bad luck for him that a 2CT occurred there. But the way he ended the match will not sit well with a lot of people. He allowed time to go on an extra few seconds just for a send off to result. That's the sort of bad luck that a referee can either prevent (end earlier) or manage better (add more time).

As for Milanovic's second red card... I'm sorry, but if someone looks at that and doesn't think it's simulation, it is a problem. It is blatant and deliberate cheating. The idea that contact should excuse the simulation card was something, I thought, that we had all let go of. A good diver/cheater will ensure there is contact to make the play look more like a penalty. The Juventus attacker folds over at his waist and throws his hip into his opponent to fool the referee. If we aren't punishing this, we shouldn't punish any simulation. It bothers me that referees can look at such a courageous decision and call it "unacceptable."

  30. In 56' an interesting incident in Matonte game, very long VAR check for a possible penalty, referee had assessed a tackle as fair on the ball in penalty area, assigning corner. Delete
    4. Yeah, I'd forgotten how young Matonte is (34yo born March/1988). But I still don't see the scope for him to get any better. He is aloof and doesn't possess any real ability to interact with players: just look how he (doesn't) solve the mid-OFR confrontation, distantly showing two pro forma cards at puzzled players. It was the same in the boorish number of pre-corner warnings too, just shouting at players quite close to him, never connecting at all. His prevention was indeed limited to these endless corner chats - no cleverness at all in tactical approach. Al Ahly obviously tried to 'test the waters' early on with a few more-than-careless interventions, and Matonte never gave any signal that he was going to act against them. I think the Egyptian side wanted to present a 'positive' side in this prestigious game vs. European giants; indeed I was quite surprised that they didn't start recklessly fouling, given the Uruguayan's approach. No card at 82' for a reckless tackle, and having to be told by Barton about a borderline-to-SFP challenge even happening (38') were the worst moments. In general it is obvious to me that Andrés Matonte tries to get through his games with decent physical attributes, issuing the fewest cards/warnings possible and avoiding to talk with players. Hence, I *genuinely* can't understand what FIFA themselves see in him, why they think he is one of the best CONMEBOL refs, etc.

And he missed two penalties live on the FoP today :)

    6. 38' I'm surprised that Barton doesn't advise Matonte to show a card there.

Matonte's positioning is really weird in this moment, he is SO far ahead of the play when he doesn't need to be (especially if what I read about his good physical fitness is correct), and it puts him at a terrible angle (screened by multiple players) to see a challenge occurring in an important spot on the field between the benches. He's lucky Barton wasn't preoccupied with something else.
