The video from Tottenham - Chelsea.
Please tell me what happened there because it is a big mess...
At first Attwell waiting so long before issuing red card, why?
Then, once issued RC, immediately OFR and YC.
    Wrong OFR, clear violent conduct.
That's somethins shocking if you ask me, but most shocking thing is that he was already in communication with VAR while issuing RC and he did that based on the communications received, there aren't other explanations for a so late sending off. Then with OFR he changed idea...
I think that if we have only Taylor and Oliver as top English referees and then nothing, there is a very clear reason, and let me add, UEFA takes always a risk if decides to appoint English VARs for important games...

    2. This is such a disaster. Imagine to explain that via audio in the stadium....
I think if we don't look at the process (which is of course shocking) how on earth a top flight referee can change this decision. You will never see more clear violent conduct. No need explanation, even supporters and commentators would expect RC here. And you still manage to get it wrong. Webb got a very difficult task if he wants to raise the level of officiating in PL.

OT: Just as we talked about "Kill the referee" series from 2008 Euro also a few weeks ago, how amazing to see Darren Cann still in action, 15 years later, and 13 years later after WC final. Such an incredible career and what a determination and love he has for this sport.

    3. "Neither official was sure who it was.
The VAR told Attwell it was Hakim Ziyech."
That's not how VAR works according to the IFAB protocol...

Also hard to understand, why Attwell didn't know, that Ziyech was the player, who committed the VC directly in front of him.

Also who was the recipient of the YC, which Attwell was about to give at the beginning? If it was for the obvious foul, it should have been Ziyech. So he either he forgot that (which would mean missing to send Ziyech off at least with 2 YCs) or he wrongly issued it to Havertz (which would be mistaken identity - and therefore also a missing additional YC to Ziyech). The only (farfetched?) explanation would be, that he actually punished an attempted kick by Havertz in the very beginning.

And yes, a RC for VC is certainly not a clear and obvious error.

    4. If you follow the twitter thread someone asks about about how the VAR is allowed to tell the referee who the player was. Dale Johnson replies that it is allowed in the VAR protocol??

    5. Who is AR1? Darren Cann is still here?

      Delete
    6. Incident happened behind Stuart. Darren would probably not have the best view. Probably the 4th or the far side would have had the best view. Honestly I thought I was a red based on the view the TV was showing.

  2. It appears that I may be in the minority here but i don't see any VC here, just 4 maybe 5 YC offences. Ziyech pushes him in the shoulder and then the arm rides up making accidental contact with the face. The LOTG specify the contact with the head or neck should be deliberate for VC. here it is not.

  8. Second YC for Violent Conduct issued by Israeli ref Snir Levi at Hajduk Split vs. Man City:

    1. Since the referee is not shown while issuing the card, one can keep the hope he issued a straight red and the information of second YC was a wrong one ;)
If second YC confirmed, I think that he punished the push by both arms and nothing about the previous head-head duel...

      Delete
    2. The "head-to-head duel" was truly that. The Split player initiates it. I get that a bit more force comes from the City player in response, but to deem that VC in today's game while giving a different punishment to the Split player is really parsing things in a way that I don't think we are supposed to now.

I'm most aghast that he gave the attacking free kick to Split. This incident starts with a late tackle from the Split player, the Split player squares up first with his head, and the Split player simulates by grabbing his face as he falls to the ground after the push. And all that results in the City player sent off and conceding a free kick. I get that it's a 2CT so it has to happen, but there's zero sense of overall justice here. The Split player got EXACTLY what he wanted from the referee.

34' - Potential YC for reckless challenge

37' - Off-the-ball incident, linesman no.1 surely informs Georgian ref here; missed sanction?
    https://streamff.co/v/MV1v1yADiA

44' - Potential YC for reckless challenge, then by complete failure in assigning distributions between ref-4th man (getting the board), leading to very clear encroachment not detected
    https://streamff.co/v/n24afqgzVx

Overall should be mentioned that Kikacheishvili's ability to produce optimal viewing ANGLES (more important than pure proximity to play) is absolutely sublime, Skomina-esque.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Goga Kikacheishvili has had a very good performance. Though the missed opportunities in 44' for two YC should have been taken by Kikacheishvili. The reckless challenge was clear YC (PSG 35) and Fourth Official Robin Braun did not assist Kikachesishvili in detecting the encroachment (PSG 37) on the DFK (clear YC).

      Delete
    2. I think one can agree with all NO CARD decisions unless the off-the-ball incident, where a YC should have been produced, but it is absolutely good thing to see this foul whistled, not easy.
Then, the enchoachment in the last incident should have been indeed spotted by one of them, distribution of duties in such situations. In Youth League you have local fourth officials and international referees, so such lack of cooperation is more likely to happen, they don't know well each other.

    6. 48' seems to be a clear YC missed, given the point of impact, AR to be blamed, but closer you are to an incident, very often less you see...
57' borderline reaction by Dortmund player, but one can still accept NO CARD.
59' could have been YC for reckless challenge, but maybe even more important, the player didn't care at all about opponent when he stood up, acting in a very dangerous manner, maybe not deliberate in terms of violent conduct, but if you sum everything about this incident, he should have been 100% booked.
72' is a correct and mandatory YC for step on foot
And I'm really sorry to say second YC is a simulation...

    1. I think he had a good game,we need to remember that these teams are rivals and this is derby,to be precise,Minho derby,so it was always going to be tough match.

Crucial decisions were all correct imo, maybe 2nd YC to Djalo too harsh but that was his line for that game and he did not stepped out of it.

Godinho is imo one of the better refs in Portugal,he has his strict line, but there is not changing criterium in match...

That's why we see games where he is issuing plenty cards ,but hey,I'm more fan of that style than something like Turpin's where the goal is to be as lenient as someone can be.

  14. José Mourinho has totally lost the nerves a few minutes after the start of second half in today game Cremonese - Roma, against fourth official Marco Serra who informed referee Piccinini to show a straight red card.
    Video:
    https://streamja.com/W4P3E
I must premise that I'm always against the Portuguese because his behavior is well-known and today once again he was sent off.
But... this time something looks too strange to my eyes. He had a reaction never seen by years. He said to referee that he had to send off not him but the fourth official, he looked absolutely shocked and convinced about that.
After the game he said that he wants to take a legal action against Serra for what he said. Also he stated that after the game he went to referees dressing room to apologize with Piccinini and he invited Serra to report what he had said to him. Serra answered that he didn't remember.
Based on this human reaction, despite of knowing well the Portuguese, I convinced myself that Serra said something wrong there. But first of all Mourinho must be always condemned for his attitude, instead of explaining poor results, he wants always to shift the focus. Today this happened again, but with a small reserve... we will see whether the words will be published. That's a very delicate incident.

    1. Yep but also if I can remember correctly I can understand if he overreqcted a bit.

I was watching some moments of the match and inconcistency that was showed by Piccinini was way too much.

He was not whistling clear fouls towards the end of 1st half that would benefit Roma and with 1 0 behind you can see why Mourinho was bit irritated.

Then 2nd half was way better,he started to book Cremonese players but I dont understand how he did not book Patricio for fouling CRE player inside the box...

Interesting to see how Mou vs Serra goes on...

    2. As this is the fourth official we're talking about, who usually uses a push to talk, I imagine there won't be any recording of what he said to Mourinho either??

    4. According to some media, at first he said "Fatti i c***i tuoi" and then "Vai a casa, ti prendono tutti per il c***".

The meaning is "Go home, all people mock you", said in a very unelegant manner, involving the word "ass".
Of course this would be totally unacceptable by Serra.
An official investigation has been opened.

    1. I expected Rohit Saggi who has proceed for a promotion in the recent weeks. he was also considered an high talent

      Delete
    2. The note by NFF suggests that the selection was made/confirmed today.

Considering that U21 Euro now has 16 teams, I expect 12 referees to be called.

2021 edition was kinda special (played behind closed doors and between March & May/June), as UEFA mixed Second and First Cat referees: Meler, Letexier, Peljto, Visser, Mariani, Schärer, Frankowski, Osmers, Kruashvili, Nyberg, Higler & Cuadra Fernández (who replaced injured De Burgos Bengoetxea)

This time I expect most referees being 1st Cat, as the qualification for the 2024 Olympics is at stake.

So, my early prediction of 11+1 referees:

Eskas, Obrenovic, Pinheiro, Rumsas, Fesnic, Walsh, Glova, Al-Hakim, Strukan, Brisard, Hernández Hernández & one CONMEBOL exchange referee.

      Delete
    3. I also expect 12 referees due to the increasing of the teams/matches. I'm gonna say: Eksas, Pinheiro, Walsh, Lindhout, Rumsas, Tohver, Obrenovic, Di Bello, Fesnic, Delajod, Hernandez Hernandez, Verboomen

      Delete
    4. Espen Eskås sounds as logical choice, among the names you mentioned I think that the absolutely expected referee is indeed Obrenovic from Slovenia. To follow, Walsh is very likely as well.
Still in my opinion, Hernandez Hernandez seems to be definitely quite developed, no need to attend this tournament for him.

      Delete
    5. If Rosetti surprises including some Cat 2 referees, those should be among Lindhout, Verboomen, Xhaja (unless Jorgji gets selected instead), Bel, Papapetrou, Kikacheishvili, Nobre (was in Conmebol U20 tournament) or someone from a Big 5 country (Schröder, Schlager, Jablonski, Soto Grado, Munuera Montero, Madley, Pignard, Delajod, Maresca, Chiffi...)

      Delete
    6. I am wondering when we will see something from Jablonski beyond Youth League and CL 4O.
He has been receiving big appointments in the Bundesliga (Bayern-Frankurt, twice Dortmund-Leipzig) this Season and has handled the games mostly brilliant.
When it comes to Germanys national appointments he is probably No.3 behind Brych and Aytekin, in front of any german FIFA ref like Siebert, Zwayer or Stieler.

      Delete
    7. My 12 names would be: Aghayev, Al Hakim, Dabanovic, Eskas, Frappart, Hernandez, D.Herrera, Jorgji, Petrescu, Pinheiro, Rumsas, Tohver

      Delete
    8. No chance Frappart does both U21 Euro and WWC in the same summer

Non-FIFA referees Konstantinos Fotiou & Ioannis Christodoulou will referee matches in Lebanon on Saturday & Sunday respectively (Salam Zgharta - Akhaa Ahli Aley & Nejmeh - Al Ansar)

FIFA referee Menelaos Antoniou (who refereed Horsens - Viborg in Danish Superliga last week as part of the exchange that brought Morten Krogh to handle Omonia - Apoel derby) will referee Al-Arabi vs Kazma in Kuwaiti Premier League (2nd vs 3rd) tomorrow.

    1. No foreign appointments in Greece this week due to absence of matches between Big 5 teams.

In Cyprus, Mikkel Redder from Denmark will referee Karmiotissa vs Omonia, and Portuguese Gustavo Correia has APOEL vs Nea Salamina (Redder with fellow compatriots Victor Skytte and Deniz Yurdakul as ARs & Jakob Sundberg as VAR, Correia with local ARs). Local referee Chrysovalantis Theouli will be in charge of the Limassol derby between AEL & Apollon (with Italian VAR Davide Ghersini)

  25. Highlights of Istra vs Rijeka, match that was in Croatia very controversial...

    Man in charge was J.Titlić.

    https://youtu.be/lOCPLpwSaGY

1st main point is direct RC.That decision surprised everyone.

2nd main point was 2nd YC to #50,imo,crystal clear ,then his behaviour is totally unaccaptable.

And 3rd is penalty, also very clear.

Maybe YC was possible here, but it would be 2nd YC to #6 and then Istra would have been without 3 players,so he managed the situation there to stay out of spotlight..

    What do you think?

    2. 2YC and PK are fully correct. I hope the player who tore the referee's notepad receives some extra matches ban.

Straight RC probably wrong, and if you are going to give such an unpopular/unexpected decision, body language should be much more convincing and strict.

I'm looking forward to know HNS' opinion (Croatia is one of the few countries along with Saudi Arabia, Cyprus or Czech Republic to have a 'public verdict'/review of crucial incidents from their committees)

Bad scenes from Brazil guys. Referee was attacked by the president of the team and was attacked by the assistant referee who was trying to defend himself. This whole confusion was about a draw (1 X 1) on multiple corners on the additional time given by the ref. The add time was already over.

  30. Not a big surprise, Rosetti assessed that controversial VAR intervention in Fiorentina-Braga as wrong, according to this article:
    https://sport.sky.it/calcio/conference-league/2023/03/03/fiorentina-braga-gol-var-rosetti
Millot can be ruled out as VAR for a while.

    1. A translation:
"In Fiorentina-Braga there was an extremely complicated and borderline situation. Goal Line Technology signaled the ball in by 2 millimeters. But VAR, checking the images (correct procedure by protocol) was not convinced and intervened. However, the images themselves were not so clear, so the final conclusion is that it would have been better for the VAR not to intervene"

  31. What a game in terms of penalty area incidents to assess for Christopher Kavanagh in Arsenal vs. Bournemouth today! Many big calls for the First Cat official and his VAR, new FIFA ref for 2023, John Brooks. All clips here:

I wonder how penalties would have been awarded in eg. Serie A with these scenes, compared to PL. 🤔

    1. To be honest I can be only astonished by watching these clips.
And like me, all serie A followers would have the same feeling.
What I want to underline before the comments is that in almost all incidents referee didn't have any reaction, just waiting for VAR for possible penalties. An extremely weak impression, if you ask me, but that's the "classic" English officiating.
Having said that, VAR was even worse, if you allow me to say that. We can "save" the situations in 18', 67' and maybe 80', but what are the criteria for supporting referee in 34', 45' and 79'? Both handballs are very clear, the first one extremely blatant. In the other case (79') you have a increased body's volume. How it is possible to play on? What should we think about VAR assessment of a punishable handball? That's what I don't understand, if you say OK NO PENALTY in both situations, you can simply say that all handballs are never penalties. And then about the kick, once you spot that attacker is kicked by opponent, arguments for playing on?
      Premier League: a different world...

    2. Criteria for supporting referee
34': Natural arm position for jumping (other arm does the same) and the player clearly tries to play it with the head, not the arm, so not deliberate
79': Defender somehow keeps his arm close to his body
For me, 34' is a good decision (if that is the consistent line in the league), but in 79' it should be a penalty

  32. OT:

    https://streamable.com/3yo448

For me this a very clear play on situation, no offside. This was the initial decision. VAR called for OFR and the referee decided to cancel the goal for offside.

    What do you guys think?

    1. Borderline, but there is a decent argument, that the defender didn't play the ball in a controlled manner because it happened in a duel.
And the attacker not passing the ball is not relevant, because a touch is enough.

Ball is still in play,it's not the same case we had with Otamendi or Fernandes that comes to my mind.
