  3. My impressions of the first three games:

Martínez: Two correct early YCs. Still in his FIFA style, meaning very lenient, but it was still justifiable. Maybe one or two cards missed, but overall no problems.

Pittí: Disappointing. One-sided match, but he ignored three card-worthy fouls, which I believe he spotted actually, but just decided not to caution the player. Not in-line with the one he gave then. Als, his communication appeared erratic, very intense hand gestures.

Parchment: Another match where the focus was on playing. He only had to use two YCs late in the second half, both correct. Very good advantages given, clearly a referee focused on letting the game flow. Good performance in an easy match.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Also: Be careful guys, your source for the appointments is CONCACAF and that means errors are legion at times. Parchment's AR1 Kedlee Powell is from the Cayman Islands, not Jamaica. (You can check the FIFA referee list or the replay if you don't trust me.)

  8. Jamaica v Honduras
    Refereee: Jair Marrufo (USA)
Assistant Referee 1: Frank Anderson (USA)
Assistant Referee 2: Ian Anderson (USA)

    15th minute
Jamaican goal looks to be scored by a player who is ahead of the line of the ball in an offside position missed by AR1 Frank Anderson.

Unfortunately, the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup is not utilizing VAR.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Typical FIFA expected and accepted performance. Marrufo stepped on the pitch predetermined to show as few cards as possible regardless of what happened. A refereeing style where words were reprimanded with a caution but late tackles and persistent infringement went unpunished. Not surprisingly Marrufo ended the match surrounded and mobbed by Honduran players. You tend to get this type reaction when players feel that you've let 2 possible PK's go uncalled.

      Delete
    2. Fully agree. His "player management" in the end - completely ignoring potentially difficult scenes involving player altercations and time wasting - were completely ignored. Honduras had two decent penalty appeals, Jamaica's first goal was clear offside.

Disciplinary wise if you don't count the scenes above maybe 1-2 cards missed for fouls. Only booking giving in 90'+5 for dissent.

CONCACAF refereeing has always been rather lenient, but this year it is looking much worse than in earlier editions. Makes it hard to watch, not gonna lie.

      Delete
    3. Yes, yes and yes. But I am not going to use a broad brush to paint all referee's as the same. Walter Lopez (GUA) most definitely didn't employ the I am not going to use my cards today technique.

      Delete
    4. Fully agreed. López first booking after fifty-nine seconds was refreshing to see and fully correct. Easily the best so far. I would also name Parchment and to a lesser extent Martínez as referees who had decent performance at least.

      Delete
    5. I completely agree. I think that other than Maruffo. The tournament has gotten off to a good start officiating wise. Hopefully it stays that way as the competition continues and the matches become tougher

      Delete
    6. I just wish that CONCACAF would have implemented VAR. As we've already had the outcome of a match directly influenced by a missed call

    1. Unfortunately, it is the other way around. Al-Jassim for CUB - MTQ and Bejarano for MEX - CAN.

Considering what Ramos got for his performances, I would feel quite angry in Al-Jassim's place. And I say that with all respect for Martinique and Cuba.

      Delete
  10. Do any other leagues use VAR other than the USA and Mexico?

In the USA-Guyana match, Iván Arcídes Bartón Cisneros (SLV) has what I would consider excessive gestures and whistle use. Not sure if this is because the camera has shown the referee after most fouls or because others think they are excessive too. I understand this is his first gold cup game and he feels the need to assert himself. For me, less is more

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In CONCACAF? I don't think so Eric. Most CONCACAF leagues are lucky enough to just have suitable stadiums and pitches. Financially leagues are not able to have it.

      Delete
  11. Ivan Barton and Adonai Escobedo both managed to get through their respective watches without issuing a single caution. Both matches were played in a fairly clean and fair manner. Where the players simply played. Throughout both matches there were minor fouls which were called. However both referee's missed what I consider mandatory cautions for reckless tackles late in both of their matches.

  17. John Pitti is referee for final

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Doubtful.
It would be Pitti's 3rd time with Mexico in the tournament. Add to this that he called a PK against Mexico in their Quarterfinal match. Which was for a foul that clearly happened outside of the penalty area.

IMO, it's going to be Said Martinez (HON) or Walter Lopez (GUA)

      Delete
    2. I agree with Sheriff regarding Pitti.
      My prediction is
MEX-USA: Lopez, G.Lopez (both GUA), Mora (CRC), Y.Martinez (CUB)
Some doubts, because he was only appointed on MD1, but I don't see a better alternative.

      Delete
    3. Said Martinez would be the only other option I think. But he is a young referee just embarking on his international career. And a poor performance in a Mexico v USA match. Could very well derail a promising career he has in the future.

      Delete
    4. Apparently it was confirmed Mario Escobar (GUA) in the final.

      Delete
    5. Wow! If it's true, that's a major surprise.
Personally not my choice for the Final. I haven't liked his style of officiating in the tournament. But he's doing what the Ref Comm must like and ask for. He has been overly lenient, permissive and has kept the cards to a bare minimum in his matches. Furthermore, watching him in action I get sense of arrogance from his persona, attitude and demeanor on the pitch.

      Delete
  18. Confirmed by a private source, Mario Escobar Toca will officiate the Gold Cup Final.
